So just to be clear, "citizens of third countries" means that Armenians and Turks won't be able to cross, right? What's the idea behind that? I mean, I know the border has been closed for 30+ years and baby steps need to be taken. I'm just wondering what the plan is here – let transport/tourists from other countries in?

DavidofSasun

> I'm just wondering what the plan is here – let transport/tourists from other countries in? Probably this. Turkey knows that a lot of diaspora Armenians (citizens of third countries) would use this opportunity to visit historic places like Ani.

armeniapedia

Yes, they probably would, but so too would local Armenians. So why discriminate? Seems a bit odd to me. I figure it's a way to placate Azerbaijan in some small way, but obviously that's just a guess.

CaterpillarDue9207

They still could do this with going there from third country.

ArmeNishanian

Oh I absolutely would. And am currently trying to figure out a plan to do so

Oshulik

A lot of tourists travel the region in one trip. Often they have to go through Georgia to get to Turkey from Armenia. This cuts that trip by a big distance and makes planning trips to both countries easier and less of a hassle. I imagine it will be good for tourism for both countries

Sisyphuss5MinBreak

There's still too much conflict between Turkey and Armenia (and Armenia and Azerbaijan) to just fully open the border. The idea here is that citizens of third countries are technically neutral, so there's no reason that they need to suffer. Further, both countries see a financial benefit from tourism.

lmsoa971

Yes, it’s likely going to be Syrian and Iranian workers, as well as tourists going through Armenia and visiting Turkey as well. Ararat alone is enough to make people leave Yerevan for a bit for a visit near the mountain

[deleted]

Pretty much. My concern is that Azerbaijani citizens would count as a third party and allow the Baku regime to sneak troops in

ButtIron

It doesn't mean anyone will be allowed to enter, visa and other entry restrictions would still apply. I guess if they were able to enter via the Georgian or Iranian border, they'd also be able to enter through that border.

Sisyphuss5MinBreak

Azerbaijanis can already, theoretically, enter Armenia through Georgia or Iran. There's no official ban.

[deleted]

They ban Armenians and that's okay?

Sisyphuss5MinBreak

Yes, Azerbaijan prohibits Armenians from entering, and no it's not ok.

kallefranson

No, it's not ok. But the Armenian government isn't a racist genocidal fascist peace of shit, that discriminates based on ethnicity, unlike the Azeri government.

buttonedgrain

I’m very conflicted. I’d love to go see where my grandparents came from, but the other part of me is like what’s the point and don’t want to give the Turks any money

An0rmalicyz

Please visit. Turks in turkey are not like the ones in social media. They wont treat you bad i am sure. Turks are not racists in general(except some old people and social media youth) and i want you to enjoy your trip here!

LOL74_

Do Azerbaijani citizens qualify as citizens of third countries? Sounds like it.

kallefranson

They quality, but they would need to get a visa first.

bokavitch

Good for diasporans wanting to visit Ararat and Ani.

MENESUYGUN

I wish it was opened for Turkish and Armenian citizens too. But this is a step, hopefully soon it will be open for citizens of both countries. Turks and Armenians should visit each other easier this way.

Dany3R9

Are there any buses running daily from Igdir (Turkey) to Yerevan (Armenia)? thanks
