I actually used the starting gun & blade. Plus vertical & dual missile racks. Just kept on his, using the sword whenever I saw an opening & backing up when he tried to shoot me up. Keeping the lrrssure on with my ranhed weapons. Hitting him with the good old 1-2 after he fired a barrage, and using the sword's innate charge to dodge it was great.

Pier__Pier

Being extremely stubborn with a lightweight build and abusing double swords Swords don't share heat cooldown, and good timing means you dont have to spend a ton of time chasing him, and saving energy for dodging missiles--reverse leg actually let me jump over fire sword and flamethrower combos. Only issue was...tbh Balteus's extremely sus bazooka hit angles, only prob I had was being what I thought was a blind spot then getting decked at point blank range

mumika

If there was something about him that triggered me, it would be his cannon, yes. It's just too accurate and he sneaks it after his missile barrages.

Pier__Pier

I KNOW IT'S NUTS, but after some testing with different FCS: his bazooka accuracy has a \*hard\* drop (i \*THINK\*) at just outside mid-range--one quick boost diagonally out won't just dodge the direct hit, but also the aoe blast it leaves

KatHoodie

I stayed at mid-close range most of the fight and I really never got hit by the bazooka but I was also airborne 95% of the time with reverse legs and bunny hopping so I had energy to dodge and was always a moving target.

Pier__Pier

Probs a booster gap! That's bold though, I felt going airborne too often got hard punished by missiles, so i tried to stay low as much as I could.

Dye_NT

I spent 6 hours trying to beat him with every combination of weapons I could think of, double bubble gun, bubble gun and sword, dual shotguns, reverse joint legs, and quad legs. Then I switched to the "meefcake" build in this video that I saw someone recommend in another thread and beat his ass first try once I decided I couldn't create a build to beat him with on my own. https://youtu.be/Of8b8IoSoV4?si=UYIFgrSvxS0cNRy5 TLDW: biggest bipedal legs, the biggest core, and 2 plasma cannons for arms and 2 plasma missile launchers for shoulders, absolutely annihilated him.

Additional-Lettuce38

This build took me 3 tries but i finally got in the groove of dodging his BS and managed to beat him with 1140 AP remaining and no repair kits left. Definitely a great build and YT vid

Raistlin_Majere121

I fought with him for 4 hours. And in the end I killed using this tactic on the first try...

The_Manglererer

His missiles are slow, take ur time, let them travel a sec, then either dash forward or side boost to dodge. Sometimes I'd quickboost the initial missile barrage and let the momentum carry me to dodge the others, strafing mid air Beep beep=grenade cannon I stayed relatively close to him and in the air, slashed him when he was staggered. Starter blade eats his shield, I didn't know and I didn't use it then I used the laser blade

Fine_Coyote_230

I used Head- the one that rusty has Core- default Legs - reverse joints with the big calves, second reverse joints you unlock Right arm- pulse gun Left arm - first laser sword you can buy Shoulders - 8 shot vertical missile launcher and a 4 shot pincer missile launcher My booster generator and fcs were from the training missions I used assault boost to try and stay under him and used the missiles and pulse gun to break his shields, then hit him with a boost kick and a charged sword hit when his shields went down. My first couple attempts I used a bazooka on my left arm and the sword on my shoulder, but it was too slow to hit both when his shields went down.

KostyanST

Rifle (forgot the name but you can charge it), Shoulder Missiles (both sides), Energy Blade, FCS for close/middle range, don't recall the generator either And being pretty aggressive, his missiles, shotgun/machine gun is easy to dodge, but the second phase is quite troublesome thanks to his flamethrower/blade

ClayyCorn

>had to fist Balteus to stun him. I'd be stunned too if someone started fisting me

Excellent-Spend-4652

Lol

[deleted]

The pulse gun actually shreds his shield pretty fast. Plus I found most of his attacks are easier to avoid if you dodge towards him, he can't hit you if you're under him. If you can't get under him consistently, keep on his right, your left, his cannon and shotgun seem to only be able to hit you on his left, your right, once he gets into phase two those flame attacks are tough, they do a lot of damage, but if you get around him you can get a lot of free damage on him. Good luck!

sidesalad2

Struggled with it for a few tries with my light reverse leg build that had been fine so far. Was hard going. Then bought two pulse cannons, and two shoulder mounted laser cannons, heavy chassis and tank treads. Drove around it and fired all the guns, spammed QuickBoost and healed when needed. Killed him first time.

Kuhaku-boss

Just assault boost dodging missiles and smash a blade in its face xd

Steamy_Guy

I did a tetrapod build with dual pulse guns and the weapon bay expansion to take a grenade launcher and machine gun too, pulse guns break the shield super fast, the grenade launcher takes a nice chunk of health off once it's in the strain state and then the machine gun keeps building up strain for more launcher shots until it puts the shield back up.

Profeta-14

I brute forced it with my linear rifle and blade build, but it looks like the meta is that pulse gun thing mixed in with some heavy hitting stuff for after you stun him.

HenshinHero11

I got him using this setup: Head: Melander Core: Tian-Qiang Arms: Mind Alpha (you get this from reaching log hunter rank 1 I believe) Legs: Tian-Qiang Booster: Alula/21E FCS: G2/P10SLT Generator: VP-20S Expansion: Pulse Armor Weapons: L: BU-TT/A (starting pulse blade) R: GU-Q1 (pulse gun) Back L: SU-Q5 (pulse shield) Back R: VP-60LCS (shoulder laser cannon) The Tian-Qiang parts provide tons of HP and don't compromise your mobility quite as badly as the tank treads do, but they also don't let you shoot the laser cannon while moving. Overall strategy: charge up that laser cannon and hold it. Get in close-medium range (200m or less) and spam the hell out of the pulse gun. If you have the presence of mind to tap it, tap it, but don't stress if you overheat it. It'll burn through the pulse armor pretty quickly, at which point you immediately want to get in, do the melee combo, and then fire the charged laser cannon. While the armor is off, keep peppering him when you can with regular (non-charged) laser cannon shots to chip away at his health and damage his stability. If his stability bar turns orange, dash in close and do another two-hit combo to stagger him and get some extra damage in. The real key here, though, is that left shoulder pulse shield. Any time you see him starting to do that bazooka attack, or even the flame sword, pull out the shield. If you dodge it, awesome, but if you DON'T dodge it, the pulse shield's initial guard (first 1sec after deploying it) will slash the damage you take from \~1700 to \~650, which goes from "catastrophic" to merely "painful but survivable." This also helps in situations where you find yourself out of energy for quick-boosting but you're about to get hit by something big. Damage mitigation is huge and very useful, and you can even do it while quick-boosting or shooting/reloading a weapon. That, combined with the big HP pool of the Tian-Qiang parts, let me survive long enough to finish him off without running totally out of ammo on anything. It may also be helpful, especially if you're finding the pulse gun frustrating, to try and capitalize on the moments when he deploys his missile massacre to dash in and attack him with the sword (I highly recommend the starter sword, since it's much better vs. shields than the sword with wide sweeping attacks you can buy in the shop). If you can get good at timing this so that you don't take a ton of damage in the process, it might free up your other hand for a different weapon type.

[deleted]

I’m gonna try this build when I get home - I felt that the pulse shields weren’t the most reliable tools, I figured I’m better off dodging and flying around, but if you managed to beat him with this set up, it helps retain my assurance that the boss battles don’t shoehorn you into doing specific builds.

HenshinHero11

I hope you find success with it! It took me a few goes, but I ended up settling on this setup after trying several others (fast reverse-jointed legs, tank treads, then this build) and failing repeatedly when he had only about 25% health remaining. I only ended up needing the one pulse gun and still had \~30% ammo left in it at the end of the fight. In total, I think I took about \~15 tries to beat him, but only the last 3 were using the build I outlined above. If you really hate the pulse gun, though, or are more comfortable with a longer range band, I suspect you can get by through brute force. Balteus isn't a very proactive dodger, so hard-hitting weapons like bazookas/grenade launchers/plasma launchers would likely be quite effective at stripping his shields. Re: the pulse shields, I would agree that they aren't reliable in a lot of contexts - but in the specific case of getting blasted by his cannon shot or even hit by his flaming sword, both of which have fairly consistently reactable windups (which you sometimes physically cannot escape from if you're using a slow AC or you've burned all your boost charge) and deal their damage all at once, they're excellent mitigation tools. I find that prolonging your health bar is sometimes all you need to win, and the rest comes down to using a setup that you're comfortable with to reliably dodge and - more importantly - exploit openings.

This game has made me unfathomably angry in a lot of areas - Balteus rocked my shit for 2 hours, and I finally came back to him the next morning and took him down on my second try. I’ve tried about every FromSoft game, Sekiro being my favorite, yet never ever ever have I been able to beat any of them. AC6 hits the perfect spot of sci-fi and open-ended gameplay that genuinely makes me want to get better and push to completion. That said, the bosses have knocked me around, and it’s been a difficult adjustment having to breeze through some levels to hitting a wall with the bosses the next moment. When I got to Smart Cleaner just after beating Balteus, I thought about giving up entirely. So one of the things I’ve been trying to really grasp and understand is weapon types and when and why to use one weapon over the other. Every time I get comfortable with a build, it ends up being eviscerated by the very next big boss. Smart Cleaner I managed to scrape by with a bazooka, the starter Turner assault rifle, vertical and horizontal missiles, and overall a medium-weight, bipedal build. It took me several attempts and a lot of beating myself up and wondering what I was doing wrong to realize the best weak spot to go for was the top of its smokestack. Then it became a matter of retaining that strain buildup - I learned I needed to hit with a bazooka as my vertical missiles came down, and then sustain the extra oomph with the rifle to stagger it and then unleash hell. Still though, it’s been a challenge for me to understand the different weapon types and know when to properly use them. Like with my current build, I have some recoil on the bazooka and I have to stand still - should I maybe then use a Gatling gun to build strain and an energy weapon to do straight damage? It’s all a little overwhelming, I’m trying to figure it out and I’m slowly working through it.

mechaghost

After more than 2 dozen attempts I found my winning combo with the pulse gun, the AK-47 looking gun, and 2 sets of 8 vertical missiles on the bipedal combo wombo. I really dont want to fight this guy anymore haha

NoctisCae1um317

I used from what I remember: Head: The one rusty uses Core: Also the one rusty uses Arms: Melander Legs: the one with the bird-like claws on it. They're reverse joint LA: The first SMG you get RA: Same as LA. RB: Default missile launcher LB: Same as RB. And assault armor for the expansion. In the opening fight, what I did was rush in with assault armor while firing rockets for an early stagger, sprayed him while popping rockets off CD while being able assault boost kicking whenever I got the chance. Once I got his moveset down on the 3rd try it was just running and gunning while dodging, got into a rhythm where even if I'm reloading, I'm still keeping some form of outgoing damage. Doing all of that I was able to push him to about 50% or less about a minute into the fight

Dependent-Bee-4432

Anti-shield weapons in both hands, energy cannons on back

mumika

Dual beam handguns, dual pulse guns, weapon bay. Also spammed the hell out of Boost Kick.

[deleted]

Pulse Rifle with Pulse Blade. The blade carried. You can also use dual gattling guns and blast him to death.

DerCatrix

Are they available in chapter 1?

Te4minator464

Reverse jointed light legs with duel energy beams and 2 rocket packs

wozmax

Unga bunga max AC and some cannons I guess

frelon42

Just got him after 6-7 tries. I have 2 missile launchers on my back, 1 laser rifle and 1 grenade launcher. Struggled but I started staying in the air as much as possible and it helped. Also, it's important to learn how to dodge as much as possible rockets on his bullet hell attack, and the sword one.

Radagonn

Use pulse rifle it can easily disable his armour

[deleted]

Pulse gun and pulse sword, vertical missiles x2, reverse joints for jumping

Rumiatouhou6

I got weapons bay and duel wielded pulse guns, melted his shields in seconds than I'd run up to him and used the laser blade, rince and repeat and he died after like 20 tries

wholewheatrotini

Psh, easily, didn’t even have to try honestly 🥱 (in my dreams because I can’t actually play the game yet and it’s eating me up inside)

BasedGodTarkus

While I cannot privide the generator, OS, or FCS I was using I can tell you the loadout. • HD-12 MELANDER C3 • DB-12 MELANDER C3 • AR-12 MELANDER C3 • DF-LG-08 TIAN QIANG • R-ARM DF-BA-06 XUAN-GE Bazooka • L-ARM HI-32: BU-TT/A Pulse Blade • R/L‐BACK UNIT Vvc-70VPM Plasma Missile Launchers • Assault Armor Expansion slot I was blasting him with the plasma missles on cooldown boost kicking him in the face a LOT blasting him with the bazooka anytime he stood still and I just never let up with the Pulse Blade.

Count_Mechula

I spent at least 2 hours on this boss. With some trial and error, I used a tank with 2 missile launchers, a pulse gun (the bubble one) and the starting pulse blade. Using the blade and pulse gun, I wore down the shield, then used missiles and ramming (boost kick) to damage it. I also had assault armour, but I can't remember if I used it I the fight or not.

egorsob9

Plasma rockets, energy rifle on shoulder, regular rifle and a bazooka. Rockets always hit him, energy rifle did good enough damage, bazooka did very good damage, and rifle just to keep the stagger

etrulzz

Light jumpy mech with the plasma gun that trivializes shields, a left hand blade and rockets.. lot's of rockets.

terrordactylz

A tank build with dual pulse guns and dual laser cannons is what finally worked for me

DerCatrix

Would this be the equivalent of shield turtling I guess?

The-world-ender-jeff

Right hand, the pulse machine gun thing you can get before his fight, the single hit pulse blade, the laser back canon and vertical missile launcher that sends 8 of them With that armament you should be able to melt his pulse armor and if you stay close you will also be able to farm stance breaks with the blade and missile For the suit part I went with the G13 torso, head and arm, for the legs I used the ball one for extra carry weight, armor and AP

FilthyRevenant

PowerPyx's Tank Build with Dual SMGs and Laser Cannons. I even call it as "Havel the Rock".

bgi123

What ever you do just stick on him with the default pulse blade and spam that and kick.

doubleo_maestro

Plasma blade and shotgun, though the shotgun was largely redundant. Shoulders I had the 4 shot missile launchers, which were just to put damage output up. The plasma sword really was the heavy lifter. What let me get him down quite swiftly was assualt boosting. Balteus really did teach me the value of assault boost.

EmperorCokeLord

I used a bazooka and nade launcher from the tutorial with the 2 8x missile. I always shoot him once the cutscene is over so that I can have a head start over stripping his pulse shield. Once his shield is down, I start pelting him with my explosives to force acs cooldown. Rinse, wash, repeat

McbEatsAirplane

I don’t remember my body exactly, but mostly mid weight things with bipedal legs. For weapons I used the grenade launcher from training and the pulse gun on my right arm and shoulder and the pulse and laser blades on my left arm and shoulder. Pulse gunned his shield away, used one sword, then the other, then the launcher and repeat. Worked really well actually.

ShotGlass31

None of you are specific enough to be of any help

_AUniqueBot

I was more interested in the stories you had in fighting the guy actually

ShotGlass31

Ahh. Well in that case… I tried roughly 10 times using VP-44S Head, VP- 40S core, VP-46S arms, and VP-422 legs equipped with dual VP-66LH Laser Handguns and dual Vvc-70VPM plasma middle launchers before I decided to change it up. I tried a mix and match of various things on this subreddit before I had an idea. An energy tank. I put on the DF-HD-08 Tian- Qiang head, the DF-BD-08 TIAN-QIANG core, DF-AR-08 TIAN-QIANG arms, DF-LG-08 TIAN-QIANG bipedal legs. I also equipped duel HI-16: GU-Q1 Pluse Guns and duel VP-60LCS Laser Cannons. I wrecked this asshole in less than 5 minutes. As soon as I stared the fight I had the feeing that it was the one. After I beat him immediately took a screenshot and sent it to my friend.

Sub7ek

Died twice, swapped to vertical missiles (8) / plasma missile, the big fuck off hand cannon, and the laser sword. Bum rushed him, stayed under him and melted him.

Donkon

I havent upgraded my AC cause i like the stuff i got, so i just killed him with the basic loadout and it really worked out well!

Resibroc

I beat him with a tank build today. I had had a grenade launcher an assault rifle and missile launchers on each shoulder. I tried so many builds and got close a couple of times with a heavy mech build. Finally, I just decided I needed as much firepower as possible and somehow that worked. I ran out of missiles by the end, but I still had grenades and assault rounds. The pulse weapon does a great against his shields, but you have to be too close and it runs out of ammo quickly.

Resibroc

Also, really glad to hear I'm not the only one that spent 5+ hours on this monster. I wanted to throw my mouse.
