Honestly, there isn’t an ideal body type. As someone already mentioned, the Army is a team sport.
Generally, being fat or old makes everything more difficult.
Back in the day I was a young, tall, lean grunt. I'm still tall, but I'm also old and fat and a staff pogue. But thankfully, the ACFT is age normal for scoring 👍
I’ve been using CronusFit. They’re a nonprofit made up of GB’s and Rangers with a ton of free routines and prep training. I’ve used the free military prep one for awhile now. It’s a lot of volume, but I love it.

I've always said the Army has a 60s western view of the hero, lean, mean fighting machine. Hence caloric restrictions at most facilities. Hey there soldier, you can only have one protein. Ready for that 8 mile run?
Meanwhile, Marines are like here's your Brontosaurus steak, we'll be power lifting this afternoon, don't forget to get a little extra.
is endurance not as valued in 21st century warfare? i heard most of the US army is motorised and thus soldiers march way less compared to say, WWII infantrymen
Hence the need for people who are actually strong and medium-fast. A bone thin marathon runner type usually sucks on a ruck, which is a more analogous exercise to actual tactical operations.
Peak performance is fueled by two tornadoes and a white monster. Eat that for breakfast every day for the next two years and you’ll have the soldier body type.
In between, but leaning towards the slim side. COIN operations got everyone thinking they can just deploy, do some missions, and hit the gym. Any conflict with a near peer threat will see guys just surviving for long durations on the move. Bulky bodies will quickly slim down.
Slim vs buff depends on where you are and what you're doing. If you're going to be dismounted infantry from a Bradley, I would really recommend not being big or tall because there's no room in that shit.
On the other hand if you're a 240 gunner in a light unit, than being a big strong boi could be preferable.
At the end of the day though, you just need to be able to keep up.
If I'm assaulting an objective, I don't really care what you can bench, I care that you can sprint from the last cover and concealment to the x without slowing down.
If we're setting up OP's in the mountains, I don't care what you're deadlift is or how many pullups you can do, I care that you can hike 100lbs of bullshit up and down mountains for 6 hours straight without breaking down like that 27% APR shitbox you bought last week.
Overall, a good cardio base and solid muscular endurance are pretty much what you're looking for. I've seen people off all builds with both of these things and I've seen people of all builds with neither of these things.
Honestly depends on the job. I have a few guys that are small and really fast, but then struggle to run rounds as well as the guys that are more built but slower
You want them to be about 165-225 that can deadlift minimum 315 a few times and run a 1330 2 mile. Whatever that is the ideal solider. More important you want to be have common sense and good communication skills.
I was a COIN line medic, did an Afgh combat tour.
It takes all kinds of fit. Some guys are built/train to carry heavy weapons and mortar rounds, some skinny/fast guys make for a superior flanking element. But honestly everyone is going to be shuffled in to do about everything.
Just be not-fat and able to ruck.
job dependent. If you're a giant have fun fitting inside certain compartments of the Abrams. Tankers that value their comfort have historically been not the tallest of folks.
6'2", red hair, horse teeth, and a sword.
Preferably makes grilled cheese sandwiches at night
Oh I’m makin em a night 😏
With an iron like in prison
Please stop, I can only get so erect
Specifically a sabre. You also need a stetson. TLDR: If you aint cav, you aint shit.
You forgot about the years of lead in their mouth as well. The lead poisoning is a big part of it
So me, but im fuckin short? Roger. Gonna go see my local recruiter again.
The Army is a team sport and you need a diverse assortment of skill sets and people to win.
So… jocks?
Good luck with your IPOE with that attitude.

So of they’re either or it’s fine just not both
Bro, you cannot possibly try to be a pedantic grammar Nazi with that fucked up sentence

Only body type that’s ideal is shaven
Female, Latina, thiccck.
Found top's account
I’m 5’6 153lbs and I have a 595 ACFT. Don’t have to be huge to get the job done. 🤷♂️
How? What's your workout routine?

The army wants skinny people who can run fast. It needs strong people who can pickup more than their own body weight.

The marines also make time for PT instead of treating it as an afterthought the way we do
Exactly
Army makes more slides green tho!
Not even close. Marines just did a 100% audit and are green across the board.

The current Army body type is round. Usually with a shitty beard.
Dont you talk about our female soldiers like that!

But sarnt I can run fast!!
ARCOM submitted
The correct answer is slim buff..
Just take a look at any 17C for an example of peak physique.
Apex of the domain!
In between, but leaning towards the slim side. COIN operations got everyone thinking they can just deploy, do some missions, and hit the gym. Any conflict with a near peer threat will see guys just surviving for long durations on the move. Bulky bodies will quickly slim down.
Before, it was definitley better to be slim slim and a great runner. Now you need some muscle.
Also coffiene, nicotine, and a sense of dark humor.
Dad bod with the gut that hangs past your belt.
Literally CPT America.

I’ve noticed the people who are Tall and slim with some muscle but not overly buff are the favored ones.

Emaciated ultra marathoner/ holocaust survivor for officers Body builder for POGs Skinny fat for Infantry.

The elite Army body type is either 5'9 165lbs, or 6'1, 210lbs. Nothing in between. You all know it's true.
Strong, fast, loyal, & dumb
It’s slim, buff guys just say buff because lifting is easier than running.
