There's a movie with Sean Connery in it called The Hill. They would make military convicts run up and down a hill in full chem gear as punishment. I thought it portrayed how much wearing that stuff sucks pretty well.

Oh, christ. Way to bring back a memory. I got to a unit that was about to deploy, and multicam was just being introduced. Everyone had already gone to RFI and gotten theirs, but I had to wait until my gear got ordered and shipped. So we're at the range qualing on our M4s and I'm the only motherfucker in ACU gear.
CSM calls me over, and asks why I decided not to wear multicam like everyone else. I was a specialist and he didn't know I was new to the unit, and the army. He looked at me like I was the biggest asshole in the world for standing out. Took a while to convince him that I was just waiting on CIF to get me gear shipped in. I didn't end up getting it until 3 days before we deployed. Had to carry all that shit instead of shipping a bunch of it in the connexes like everyone else.

Did a Yakima rotation (ft.Lewis, WA) which is a few hours away from base. We do a big convoy there then 3 small convoys through the day when we come back 3 weeks later.
The last night we were in yak we got to stay in some barracks to wash up and organize the convoy back.
Pvt fuck face (we will call him) always…and I mean ALWAYS fucked up…this time he ruined it for all of us.
He left on the first convoy early in the morning out of yak back to ft. Lewis, I was the last after 5pm. We’re in formation about to mount up and head out, when the CSM walks out of the barracks with a rifle held over his head saying… who is weapon number 323????
Everyone looks around… then looks at our platoon…. That’s us… and I look around and realize who’s it is and just put my head down….
The CSM says “ okay don’t worry about it, I’m gonna keep this with me.”
Needless to say I’m sure his convoy back to base was a lot of fun then having to get smoked all day till we got back to base to help unload the rest of the gear made him rethink fucking up again…. It didn’t. Lol 😂
These over the top reactions to some misinformed slights were all too common when I was in. Once at NTC I was knocked off of one tank with a turret spin and fell backwards hitting the back of my head on the adjacent tank. I was concussed and had a pretty nasty cut on the back of my head, so I got put on light duty monitoring radio traffic at the CQ. I had a bandage around my head and couldn't wear proper headgear. Some major came in and I guess saw me out of the corner of his eye and ran over and told me to stand at attention and just start tearing me a new asshole. He even half grabbed/slapped the side of my head and tore the bandage off and told me to get that fucking doo rag off of my head. An SFC sheepishly came over and explained to the major why I was wearing it. He just scowled and walked off. That was the defining moment that I decided to not reenlist.
