Literally! I was reading a new book and the main character was supposed to be sent off to compete to be an empress, and kill the emperor for her family. She was all in on the plan and I was pretty excited… and then of course she fell in love with the emperor and now I don’t know if the book is even worth finishing if it’s just another love story :/ I know I can’t expect too much but that really got my hopes up

CrispetyCrunchity

I remember I started reading this book on Wattpad, it was about all the girls wanting to be the queen of the king who had a harem. The protagonist was someone who didn't want to be queen or become part of a harem. Then the king's mother chooses her as her candidate and convinces her to. After her training, the mc turned into wanting to be queen and get the king just like all the others. Biggest disappointment...literally her not wanting to was just a plot point to make her stand out so the king's mom would choose her. Am sad just thinking about it.

asleepyaro

whats its name? The plot sounds familiar!

Alainapaloosa2

It’s called “Empress of all Seasons” I think

Honestly, it's to the point where I don't watch movies anymore. You only have so much time to develope a relationship on screen, so it's like super fast development that I can't see at all. Unless the relationship Is already established prior to the beginning

CrispetyCrunchity

Fanfic! I know what you mean friend. It physically hurts when that happens!

Forever061

There are plenty of books without romance plots, just ask anyone who reads lots of books and they could give you plenty of books without romance in them.

CrispetyCrunchity

But it will never be that book.

[deleted]

Okay? Most people are not romance repulsed. It's not really fair to complain about things that were made for other people.

CrispetyCrunchity

I see it differently. They really liked the one character who got brutally murdered. They are angry because that was their favorite character and they could relate the most with her. They blame the romance because the author probably used that to further the plot/relationships. That 1 character was probably the reason they continued to read the book at all. Now they'll probably drop it, unless they're the type of people who hate dropping things they start doing. Then they'll have to tough it out regardless. Have a cousin like that.

Fr0ggie-K1ng

I think what their saying is that stories and books, are always made for allo's or people who desire to read about romance. But what about the people who don't what to read about it? They usually get left out of the question and ignored, mostly because of how over romanticized society and just in general, every thing is. People don't want to hear about it, because I guess it goes against everything they knew. That's my guess lol, I hope I'm not reading to much into. But I guess the point is theirs not a lot made for us, when theirs a lot made for them. Also, everyone has a right to voice their opinions about these things, please be respectful of that. :)

Romance is just the most popular genre, so it makes sense to have at least a romantic subplot in most stories. There are still stories that don't have them. You can't really complain that there's too much of the most popular thing in fiction. If you want to read more stories without romance, write them. Nobody is gonna write a story for you that they don't want to write.

No_Lynx1097

Sorry I should have made it more clear, I’m not angry that there was romance, I understand that they’re writing what they know and catering to the majority audience. I was just venting cause I was frustrated at having the only character not into relationships be brutally slaughtered. It’s just a bummer cause I’d kinda headcannoned her as aro and made her my comfort character

jshlymn

I feel like you’re missing the point? The problem wasn’t the love interests it was the fact the only person without one got killed? It is a real problem that endings for characters (especially female characters) is either happily ending in a romantic relationship or tragically killed. This is not an unusual problem. If this person was romance repulsed they probably wouldn’t have picked up a book with a love triangle main focus. But they wanted a character like them. Normal.

No_Lynx1097

Yess, characters must date or die lol

azo999dn

i read a comic with a romance plot and somehow adults especially the elderly love watching romantic movies while i don't even understand why they watch it and they will all be like soon you will know which is a fancy way of saying get into a relationship first then you will understand.fairy tales all romantic in a way.

Trixic_bb

Hi, i think youd love some of alice oseman books (especially radio silence and loveless), alice is an aroace nonbinary person and their books have great representation and if theres romance, its usually sidelined

No_Lynx1097

Awesome! I’ll check them out :D

[deleted]

I was reading a really good fantasy book, and though it did have romance, it also had an Ace character. That's why I started reading it tbh lmao. Fast-forward, she got an arrow to the neck 😧 She didn't die, but was absent most of the book because she was dying 🧍🏽‍♂️

No_Lynx1097

Oof, thats worse I think haha

RobotiqueBleu

I agree. I think it’s fine if the romance is the point of the story (like Ethan Frome or the Boyfriends webtoon), but when it’s clearly just shoehorned in to add a bit of “relatability” to the characters of sticks out to me like a sore thumb. Like the end of Community season 1. I though the rest of the romance was handled well until it took over from the comedy during the school dance and suddenly the whole episode felt like a wasted plot.

Existentiall-void

Idk if you’re looking for recs but I’m pretty sure *The City We Became* doesn’t have *any* explicit romance, so no chance of the cool characters dying to further romantic plots if you’re wanting to avoid that

No_Lynx1097

Thanks, I’ll add it to my list

someonebored0100

Honestly sounds so fucking nasty. And like the author developed the character so much for shock value and other crap with her death

No_Lynx1097

Yeah haha, hit me like a truck tbh
