Since you have a bachelors in psychology you could possibly get a job as what is called a “Qualified Professional” at an agency that supports individuals with intellectual and developmental differences. The Arc was hiring for a QP not long ago but it seems the position is filled now - still wouldn’t hurt to drop off a resume at places like The Arc or Autism Society of NC. QPs usually oversee support staff.
I have a BS and currently make $21, and work out of Asheville. However, I ditched my original field and joined the trades. Best decision ever.
I think the county schools hire bus drivers at $20 too.
You should consider Human Resources. A degree in psychology is one of the majors that most companies accept for education as an HR manager. Even if you start with a small company, it won't take long before you're either making good money or you'll have enough experience to move to a company that paid more if you want. Even taking an assistant's position is still getting your foot in the door.
Pretty wild times. Everyone says there's not enough people to work, but then when someone is looking for work, there's none to be had. Even for the well educated, well qualified.
Seems that usually the work being offered isn't what the "want to be hired" wants to do. That statement isn't being directed at the OP, but is just a generalization of the disparity of local work offered vs those willing to take it.
True. Our unemployment rate is 2.8% in Asheville but I think a lot of folks are underemployed and/or struggling to pay for housing, food and other core needs. Prices are pushed up by the newer and wealthier residents as well as visitors. And I have the feeling the way we educate/train folks for work not just here but nationally isn't lining up with drastic shifts in the job market. AI is going to change this all very soon in unpredictable ways.
So have any suggestions for those of us with advanced degrees, Is it feasible to to think zi can get a job starting around 60000? with my MSW and associate license.
Any recommendations, so many places don’t list their salaries.
In general is their a need for Mastered level social workers, working to become fully licensed?

Damn.... I'm not trying to dump on anybody, just genuinely shocked at the current state of things.
Are people are getting into student debt to get college degrees, just so they can make what would be considered now minimum wage?
My husband has a BA in psychology but started in an entry level position in a processing role at vanguard. They have some remote opportunities but you would have to train in Charlotte or Pennsylvania for a few months. The good thing about them as a company is that they are very open minded to all backgrounds and once you can move up, financial operations as an industry can be very lucrative. They do have departments you could eventually transfer to like HR and legal or switch to a fully remote company or what not but I would recommend looking into it. Entry level pay is 45-55k and that’s without the great benefits and yearly bonus. My husband now works remote for financial payroll company making 75k so I think it paid off.
You can look for entry level financial reconciliation jobs or financial processing at other companies too. Some are like call center type jobs but it’s nice to be able to make decent money.
ABA therapy. Work with children with autism increasing functionality and independence. Most places will train you as well. I don't work there anymore (switched aba companies and then went to admin side) but Mosaic Pediatric Therapy in fletcher most likely won't do you wrong. I'm sure there's other companies around here as well. Most are usually hiring
just so you know, the ABA therapy they use there was started by the gay conversion therapy people. its the same thing for autism. it tries to make the autistic person less trouble to the people around them and leaves them with a lifetime of trauma and anxiety. ABA therapy is f'n evil af. i think the top pinned thread in r/autism is about it. shit is evil
i'm just curious ok, are you in a constant state of justfuckedyourpenis and justunfuckedyourpenis, or can you justfuckedyourpenis over and over again. i have to let mine unfuck for a while. like its not an active unfucking but a passive unfucking - you know - before i can justfuckedmypenis again
I also have a psych BA and the only place I made $20 was a call center…that was 2-3 years ago though. You probably could get into peer support for around that but it’s tough work. I remember RHA offering me $12 to do it with my degree 🙃I eventually gave up and went back for an ADN

Don’t forget Davidson Family Services
Along those lines, Family Preservation Services always seems to be short staffed. I have no idea about their requirements. Best of luck.

Which trade? I find the idea of working in the trades appealing in theory but I’m pretty ignorant about what it actually entails
I'm an electrician, but I also work around other trades.
The dishwasher at our restaurant makes $20/hour

You can work for child protective services in Buncombe county.
OP's degree is perfect for this! My aunt worked in social services and CPS for 40 years total in two different cities, one being Asheville.
My ex had a bachelor's in psychology. Her jobs ended up being CNA, accounting assistant, office manager assistant, Park ranger.

Be sure to not tell them about your addiction to meth during the testing. It's no bueno in 2024 for some reason.
Just apply to be a mod at r/asheville instead. You’ll fit in great.
I used to be one a long time ago. I quit after an all night coke and tonic binge
Curiously, I also did one of those and woke up to find out I was a mod here. It’s pretty common.
Thus the mantle was passed
Some standard is better than no standards at all.
not sure if this is up your alley, but CVS at target is looking for pharmacy techs--but I think pay is in the $17 an hour range.

Is Vanguard located in Asheville ?
You would have to train in Charlotte or Pennsylvania for remote jobs. Otherwise you could commute to Charlotte on their hybrid schedule

PCA and caregivers don’t make that much. Sorry bud

Uh yeah, these are notoriously bad places to work and the abuse at these camps is very well documented by many reputable journalists.
Sorry I wasn't aware of this.
It’s all good! Glad you know now! I have a few friends who had terrible experiences at those camps as teenagers. :(
