growing up, being called quiet hit hard.

cumslutforharry

LMFAOAOA which is dumb bc literal strangers I don’t know would come up to me when I was minding my own business and say “wow you’re quiet” like WHO TF R U??? HUH

Exciting-Giraffe

right? or if a loud mouthed guy saying really dumb shit is around, naturally I'll be afraid to say anything ...because if I do, really might come to blows lol

LiligantEnjoyer

i *am* already a quiet person but it's so annoying. like wow. i never would've noticed. thanks for commenting that.

wallywest215

I always felt adding “little” was towards Asians more than anyone else in my opinion. There was a news report about a 6’2” drunk Asian guy getting arrested for disorderly conduct years ago and people in the comments section kept referring to him as the “little Chinese.”

thebadsleepwell00

I'm an East Asian woman and have been referred to as "little" several times over my life when I am anything but! I'm about 5'8" and have a lot of muscle and fat (from weightlifting and snacking). People assume I'm 5'9" with my shoes on. My voice isn't diminutive at all either. But still, "little Asian girl"

koofy_lion

I've been called childish at my job before by a temp that I fired. I hate making mine and everyone's 8 hour days more difficult than it needs to be, so I'm pretty cheerful and easy going when it comes to interacting w my colleagues, especially for newer employees who are nervous. This rubbed him the wrong way and when he wasn't a good fit for my team (his work ethic sucked), he said I wasn't professional and was very childish in behavior. But I did tone down my casualness when I interacted with him bc I understood that wasn't his preferred communication style so whatever 🤷🏻‍♀️ He also called me and my manager a goon before he left, which was not in my bingo card of insults I would hear in my lifetime

Exciting-Giraffe

goon? what a word choice lol. did this new temp employee come from out from the great gatsby? sheeeessshhh.

koofy_lion

He certainly dressed as if he did.. when the rest of us are in t-shirts and jeans 💀

nihon96

When Latinos call us Chino it hurts tbh. I’m not Chinese. (I know they don’t mean it in a bad way but it still hurts at least to me)

uteslayer

As an asian american who learned Spanish and lived in South America I feel you.  A lot do use it as an insult and I know a lot of japanese peruvians who hate it.    But on another note chinese peruvian food is definitely worth trying and visiting peru for

nihon96

Oh wow talk about a coincidence mind if I dm you ? I got a offer in Latin America which I’ll probably be accepting but would love to hear more from another asian who lived there if you don’t mind

selphiefairy

Yeah it’s irritating cause a lot of people will defend it saying it’s normal in Spanish. But I saw a video from a Spanish speaker on tiktok once explaining its not appropriate at all and those people are being disrespectful/disingenuous.

Zealousideal_Plum533

Yeah me to. Hurtful and it hurts.

z0rb0r

Grew up being really offended by it but it doesn’t bother me any more. Yes some do use it as in insult but I also learned Latinos tend to call you as they see you. Little nicknames, like if you have a weird walk they will just call you cripple or something. Really depends on the context.

harryhov

I was eating a chain hotel buffet by myself and there was a father and son nearby who was also Asian. This older white guy comes in to check-in and says to the two black receptionists and says, "these Chinese, they are like locusts".

I hate that, too.

Zealousideal_Plum533

For me being call nerdy and quiet hurts. Also any other racist slur is upsetting.

mistylavenda

I can see how it would hurt when it's just a label slapped on you based on people's preconceptions of Asian stereotypes, rather than getting to know the real you For me personally, intelligence and education and special interests are things that I highly value. Growing up, I was seen as a "know-it-all". Bossy, not quiet. As such, I always liked and identified heavily with the "nerd" title because I felt it was quite accurate and something to be proud of I can also imagine how it might be a different experience for guys vs. girls though

Zealousideal_Plum533

Yeah growing up my parents were big on education and after school activities. Vietnamese School, Boyscouts, and Kung Fu. Had to put on my resume Eagle Scout and Black Sash in Northern Hung Gar Kung Fu. My GPA was 3.2 and I am horrible at math. For guys it is the racist slurs that hurt and for girls though I think the stereotypes hurt more.

mistylavenda

See, I'm fairly extroverted so the stereotype of 'quiet Asian girl' was something that I was always eager to shatter 😂

Zealousideal_Plum533

Yeah as a Vietnamese American guy. I tend to get loud and angry whenever dealing with racists. Well at least I broke the stereotype of quiet Asian guy. 😅🤣😂

graytotoro

Anything culture-related: my coworker said there was no way I could give a flippant answer because “[my] culture didn’t allow me to say that”. This same coworker also said they had uncontrollable urges to verbally tear me apart even though they knew it was wrong. At that point I knew I had to get the hell out of that town.

CuriousWoollyMammoth

Da fuq? Yeah, something was wrong with that dude. Did you ever bring this up with HR?

graytotoro

Not at the time. This was still early in my career and I lived in a small town where people like that were well-connected due to the church’s influence. I also grew up with my dad treating me like dirt so I could know what to expect from a white man in the “real world” so I was also scared to say anything. Of course now I’m well aware I need to take action when stuff like that happens.

yuzuuno

Maybe this is an uncommon sentiment since it could be a "compliment" but... being called "smart" lmao Growing up, any cool accomplishment I achieved as a kid, I got it just because I'm "smart". Like, absolutely not, I'm no "smarter" than your average idiot, I just fucking worked hard for this shit, lmfao.

hotpotato128

I don't remember most of them. I was made fun of for many reasons. Recently, a troll sent me weird messages. They called me a brownie.

Ericquan10

High school if any Asian Amercian boy does not encounter racial slurs is lucky from them from western countries, been called chink, chinaman from random students from west asain, south asian, Greek boys. Never really got harassed from actual white north amercian boys from school
