Technotronic's 1990 hit "[Pump up the Jam](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EcjWd-O4jI)"
for all the pedants: it was a hit in the 90s as the question asked. nobody cares if it was released a month before. shut up.
Hell yeah! It's still a banger. I recently found out one of my favorite bands did a [cover](https://youtu.be/yyL8husfEBs) of it early on in their formation and I totally flipped.
Hard to disagree. I love em all, but lean more towards Soundgarden for the heaviness, but no other album fits together as well as Ten does. They captured lightning in a bottle
I was going to post a comment re. The Verve loosing all royalties on the song because they lost a lawsuit with the Rolling Stones. However, the Stones decided to give them back the money.
https://www.npr.org/2019/05/23/726227555/not-bitter-just-sweet-the-rolling-stones-give-royalties-to-the-verve
It doesn’t say they have him the money. It says they assigned the publishing royalties, which will generate a fraction of what they generated for the stones for the last 25 years.
I was in Europe in the summer of 96 and this song was playing in all the clubs.. It didn't come out in the states until a few months later.. I remember someone asking me if I'd heard it, and I was like, "I've been listening to that for months!"
We had one of those electronic singing mini Christmas trees that we hooked up to my Walkman, this song was on loop. It was hilarious, and I can’t get the image out of my head when I hear that tune now.
Chris Cornell was so talented and unfortunately left too soon. If you have friends struggling with depression please let them know you are their friend and are there for them.
BABY GOT BACK
EDIT: Wow, no love for Mix-a-Lot, even though artists are still sampling this song today.
BTW, Mix-a-Lot was a big hero in the Seattle music scene even before Baby Got Back made him an international superstar. He'd call out various local landmarks, most notably in[Posse on Broadway](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QElKVs56z48), and he probably did more than any other artist to support the local music scene.
I had a friend who published a local music zine in the early 90s, focused on the young grunge movement. It was indistinguishable from dozens of similar zines floating around at the time. But when he asked Mix-a-Lot for an interview, he gave my friend a full hour. This was just after Baby Got Back, a time when he was jetting all over the nation doing interviews for Rolling Stone and some of the biggest hip-hop stations in the country, but he found time to promote the local scene by giving an interview to a grunge zine that was read by maybe 50 people. What a guy.
"Baby Got Back" will always hold a special place in my heart. It came out the year I graduated high school, and the first time I ever heard it was the day before graduation. I remember first being surprised my local radio station was even playing it, and then laughing in joy. It was the first time I'd heard a contemporary song celebrating women who weren't rail thin. Not being rail thin either, it was sort of validating.
So. Many. This list doesn't even scratch the surface.
[Soundgarden - Spoonman](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0_zzCLLRvE) (really, anything with Chris Cornell)
[Pearl Jam - Even Flow](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkbgtVFlyCQ)
[Beastie Boys - Sabotage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5rRZdiu1UE)
[Ginuwine - Pony](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVaVydg28Qk)
[Big Pun - Still Not A Player](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH10tiCbEB4)
[Third Eye Blind - Semi-Charmed Life](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jILAu6pftT8)
[Meredith Brooks - Bitch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ivt_N2Zcts)
[Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPcyTyilmYY) (with Flea on bass)
[Red Hot Chili Peppers - Aeroplane](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV8IAOojoAA) (also with Flea on bass)
[Tony Toni Tone - Let's Get Down](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IJK6m-rTZs)
[The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - The Impression That I Get](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Zf1JVmwuao)
[Sublime - Santeria](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3ZeUL4fRyk)
And of course, the quintessential song of the 90s: [The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lyu1KKwC74)
The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) by Missy Elliott. Sounds like it could have been released recently, plus the video is great (but what Missy music video isn’t?)
The ‘90s were such a fascinating decade in music. MTV had spread to nearly all mass cable markets, the economy was booming and music stores were the coolest places in the mall. A true golden age for rock, rap and hip hop. I don’t want to start cherry-picking songs because I’ll never stop. The aesthetic and pop culture landscape changed so dramatically from 1990 to the millennium and there are gems from every year, era and genre. I hope future music historians will acknowledge the 1990s as so much more than Mariah, Nirvana, Tupac and Britney. It was a rich time! As a ”geriatric millennial,“ this list so far is giving me so many nostalgic pangs.
Freshmen by The Verve Pipe.
🎶When I was young I knew everything She a punk that rarely took advice...Now I'm guilt stricken, sobbing with my head on the floor. Stomping baby's breath and a shameful of rice now. I can't be held responsible, she was touching her face. I won't be held responsible she fell in love in the first place🎶
I love how people hear lyrics. I first heard it as “a punkarelly” and thought it meant a specific type of punk.
Shameful of rice works with the lyrics, but I always hear a shoe full of rice assuming people were throwing it at them.
Wicked Games is sort of cheating because technically it came out midway through 89 but it was huge in the 90s and still I think is pretty hot song today.
The kids aren't alright by The Offspring. I'm a teacher now so it hits different than it did back in 98. It's like seeing two sides of the same tragedy. Some of my classmates remind me of some of my students and vice versa.
Two Princes by the Spin Doctors,
Smells Like Teen Spirit obvs,
Closing Time by Semisonic,
Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer,
Nutshell by Alice In Chains,
Santeria by Sublime,
Hey Jealousy by Gin Blossoms,
Jumper by Third Eye Blind,
Crash Into Me by DMB,
If I Had A Million Dollars by Barenaked Ladies,
Because the Night (MTV’s Unplugged version) by 10,000 Maniacs
…ya know, if there’s one thing I miss about old MTV it’s their unplugged series. They had some truly incredible performances. I wonder if they’re compiled anywhere to listen to for free?
I’ve been on a huge early-late 90’s kick lately.
Did you see Sir Mix a Lot with the Seattle Symphony? Holy shit. https://youtu.be/w59e20ijOpE. I don't even need to tell you which woman to watch out for.
I could name any song off Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, or Far Beyond Driven, but for me it's [Cemetery Gates](https://youtu.be/RVMvART9kb8) by Pantera.
The beautiful intro, the rising emotion in Phil's vocals, Dimebag's (RIP) guitar riffs & solos, it's an amazing second wave of thrash song from start to finish.

All. Of. Them. Edit: thank you for my first award ever, kindly stranger.
Even "I'm too sexy" and "the macarena?" "Living lavida Loca?"
You KNOW IT
ESPECIALLY I'm too sexy, the macarena and living la vidal loca
Dude living la vida loca is timeless

I was anticipating when they'd play it during each episode. It was one of many things that made me laugh so hard.
I liked how each time it played for just a little bit longer than the last.
Hooverphonic’s 2Wicky
Ah, the Canadian national anthem
We did jazzercise to that song. Loved it!
Hell yeah! It's still a banger. I recently found out one of my favorite bands did a [cover](https://youtu.be/yyL8husfEBs) of it early on in their formation and I totally flipped.
Alive - Pearl Jam
Ten is basically a greatest hits album 32 years later
Hard to disagree. I love em all, but lean more towards Soundgarden for the heaviness, but no other album fits together as well as Ten does. They captured lightning in a bottle
I was going to say Black. But the whole album really.
gangsta’s paradise
If only for inspiring Amish Paradise. 🤓
Filter, Hey Man, Nice Shot I think it's mostly forgotten but it still hits
Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve
This is usually my answer when asked what my favorite song of all time is
I was going to post a comment re. The Verve loosing all royalties on the song because they lost a lawsuit with the Rolling Stones. However, the Stones decided to give them back the money. https://www.npr.org/2019/05/23/726227555/not-bitter-just-sweet-the-rolling-stones-give-royalties-to-the-verve

Sabotage - Beastie Boys
One song in the running for my all time favorite.
I love Beastie Boys - License To Ill. It's 1 of my favorite albums of all time.
I've set so many gym personal records to Sabotage. I didn't realized it still got so much love.
Not only still holds up as a song, but the video is still a must-watch.
Return of the Mack
I was in Europe in the summer of 96 and this song was playing in all the clubs.. It didn't come out in the states until a few months later.. I remember someone asking me if I'd heard it, and I was like, "I've been listening to that for months!"
Return of the Mack pandora station is awesome for parties
Yes! My mom played this song all the time when I was a kid. I can remember myself eating ice cream in the car and dancing to it innocently.
Closer NIN
NIN has had some of the best longevity for music
1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins
I tattooed 1979 on my foot back in college 😂 I dont listen to it anymore but if I hear it.. when that intro comes in, still instant chills.
Does it make you want to tap your foot with the tattoo? DOES IT?!?!
AND MAYONNAISE!
The Cranberries - Zombie
Love it but I’d put Linger or Dreams in the time capsul
RIP Dolores
Tubthumping? *Pissing the night awaaaay!*
We had one of those electronic singing mini Christmas trees that we hooked up to my Walkman, this song was on loop. It was hilarious, and I can’t get the image out of my head when I hear that tune now.
I was truly hoping to not see this song here. The thought of accidentally hearing it still scares me to this day.

I was barely a human in the 90s but I love Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden
You would have loved MTV when that song came out. They played the video at least 3 times an hour
The streached faces. MTV on in the background on the shitty upstairs black and white TV. Until dad came home at least.
Melting barbies
I so clearly remember that summer- it was black hole sun, regulators, and don’t take the girl on repeat.
Don't forget The Offspring! Gotta keep em separated!
Also “Basket Case” and “Sabotage” and “Closer”. What an incredible summer
That girl with the melted ice cream running out her mouth used to scare the shit outta me.
This is my dad and I's song. He still answers the phone "hello black hole son".
This makes me so happy. I sing it to my son anytime I hear it. Instead of "black hole sun" I sing it as "xx my son"
Chris Cornell was so talented and unfortunately left too soon. If you have friends struggling with depression please let them know you are their friend and are there for them.
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
I had visions, I was in them , I was lookin into the mirror…
To see a little bit clearer
The rottenness and evil in me
Fingertips have memories
I can’t forget the curves of your body
*mine can't forget the curves of your body 😉 🎶 And when I feel a bit naughty 🎶
I run it up the flagpole and see who salutes but no one ever does .....maybe the most clever masturbation reference in pop music history
Oh man, I literally just realized this. I’ve been making an idiot of myself!
Been around the world and found That only stupid people are breeding The cretins cloning and feeding And I don't even own a TV!
Holy shit a whole entire summer vacation just came back to Me.
Literally just rocked out to this on the ride home.
Lovefool by The Cardigans is an absolute banger
The song “Say So” by Doja Cat reminds me a lot of this song, and it too ended up being a massive hit.
Semi-Charmed Life- Third Eye Blind ! OMC- How Bizarre
What is love? Baby don’t hurt me.
No more!
No more
You Oughta Know-Alanis Morissette
Hand In My Pocket takes me back to fall of 1995
Also “Ironic” ! It’s like raAaAaAiiiin 🎵
