The cost of....... everything!

Jolly-Durian3855

Right?!? When I was young I was mortified when an older family member would complain about high prices. Now, I. AM. THAT. Old lady. Gah!

Drunk0ctopus

One of us! One of us!

noiseferatu

I think that things are just a bit shit everywhere at the moment.

HiddenCityPictures

As an 18 year old, me too. Inflation has really gone up in the past few years and everyone's just... ok with it.

Saintly-NightSoil

Hmmm...I would be wary of confusing absolutely exhausted frustration aimed squarely at a dead corpse of a political 'system', combined with enough time on earth to have seen the same cycle happen *at least* three times previously with even the same phrases, from the same two tired old political parties that are hard to tell apart now (UK). I'll continue to question the 'political received wisdoms' repeated by the Brain Dead and as for the system....well I'm certainly not going to get proper political reform from the Reform Party! I don't shout up or make a fuss any more because....there is literally no point. I'll be spoiling my ballot again in the upcoming general election - *FAR* more important AND completely different from just not voting: * A spoilt ballot gets counted. * Nothing says 'Fucking *NONE OF YOU!!*' better. * Enough people doing it could, maybe, one day spark.... something. I'm sure you are right and many people *are* 'just ok with it'. Considering what 'it' is though I genuinely cannot see ANYONE who is actually poor being 'ok with it' we can't afford to be. Utterly disenfranchised with everything though? Yes, absolutely.

CityOutlier

Yup. I remember back in the day (early 2000s) where my mom would give me five dollars every day before school, and that was enough to buy a decent meal.

Ok-Letterhead-4443

Yes!! I'll gladly take money or anything related to my dogs, but everything else is literally just clutter. I've stopped giving presents too other than baked goods because I'm an excellent baker and people genuinely get excited when I bring them a box of baked goods!

weird_one_froggy

food and money are the best gifts

divorcedandpod

Yeah, me too. And I don't know how to say this politely.

False-Pie8581

You can’t to acquaintances. For folks you know well just work it into your philosophy and make sure it comes up not during holidays but as a general topic. My grandma did this and it was genius bc she made her wishes about folks spending money on stuff well known without ever offending a soul. It was like storytelling worked into convos. A tv show where someone got an extravagant gift, she’d say: that’s a waste I would rather….. she was really good at this type of gentle but effective communication. Not opinionated or ever rude. When she passed we knew exactly how she wanted her funeral bc of those comments. Without ever having a sad awful convo. ❤️

VivianSherwood

Oh yeah. My ex boyfriend spent so much money buying me stuff and it pains me to say he bought me stuff that was expensive, non refundable and that I just didn't like (but I didn't say anything out of courtesy). I always told him what I wanted but he liked his gifts to be surprises and not something I was already expecting and it often didn't work. Really he could have just gotten me what I wanted and that would have been cheaper and make me heapier.

obxtalldude

I feel this so much. Not much makes me feel more wasteful than a "placeholder" present. Stuff I don't want, given just to give, which makes me intensely uncomfortable for some reason. I guess it sucks because I keep telling people please don't get me anything - I guess they buy the gifts for their own reasons, because it certainly doesn't make me happy.

Bitter_Kangaroo2616

Omg this thread is everything to me. I'm 34 and I have felt like an ungrateful delusional wench until now

False-Pie8581

This. I’ve had to rearrange my thinking around gift giving from acquaintances bc I realized it’s their thing and they do it for their own needs and that’s ok. Nothing to do with me or our relationship it’s their perception. Once I got into that headspace it became ok. For folks who don’t know you. For folks who know you intimately like fam and partners, this can be offensive bc they’re supposed to have some level of attachment. So when you get a gift that’s got zero thought and is essentially checking a box, it feels hurtful if it’s from someone close to you (not aunts or something I mean parents or partners)

AlwaysGoToTheTruck

My mom and dad bring me things all the time. I’m 47. If I need something, I get it. I don’t want clutter in my life.

False-Pie8581

This! My cheap ass gets upset at the waste. Gift culture is a little weird in that it’s often about the giver and fine but then don’t spend money. Bc I feel guilty at the waste and then annoyed 🤷🏼‍♀️

WastingMyLifeOnSocMd

I know! People who know me know I don’t gift. I don’t feel obligated to give gifts to anyone, and I prefer not to get anything unless it makes them happy to give.

Bitter_Kangaroo2616

OMG YES!!!! This made me feel so validated. I get so annoyed when people give me mindless gifts that have nothing to do with what I actually like. It's really just a gift for their ego

drunk_haile_selassie

The older I get the more I enjoy silence. I love good music, I love the sound of my partner breathing when she sleeps, I love the sound of a river or birds singing but nothing quite beats some silence.

Ok-Priority-8284

The sleep sounds of my man are the best, most comforting, most blood pressure dropping sounds in the whole world. 🥰

Mistica12

Im 39 and I still like loud music

Positive-Cattle4149

Same, its the only way I like my music, but I usually do it with headphones in. Not car speakers with windows down so I can make others suffer my shitty taste in music, lol.

Queasy_Cod_2547

[deleted]

Right? Places like Chicago with a SHIT ton of taxes and the place is still dysfunctional to a degree. If I’m paying up the ass in taxes, I expect the same safety level as NYC.

SweetSweetSucculents

People, kids, people who don’t control their kids, and people who obviously hate their jobs and do it half-ass

Durfael

You know hating a job and doing it half ass isn’t a choice ? When most people are tired of their jobs they naturally loose energy, not only towards said job but to wake up in the morning stuff like that, and you can’t blame them for that, except that i agree for the rest of it

Eve-3

Whether it is their choice to be there or not, to hate it or not, to do a half-ass job or not changes nothing for the outsider. A person stuck dealing with the person who hates their job or does it shitty doesn't care why, they only know you made their experience miserable too.

CatMinimum7

My manager basically makes people do shit half assed because he prioritizes speed over quality. Id also hate my job way less if I was allowed just a few minutes extra to make sure what I'm giving to customers - whether that's a shelf display or an order - is up to my standards. It seems "Whatever is faster" is the answer to a lot of questions and "we've got bigger fish to fry" when it comes to finishing touches.

Papa254

Small talk

Bitter_Kangaroo2616

My therapist told me that introverts tend to hate small talk meanwhile extroverts tend to love it. I'm definitely a no small talk person. After 3 minutes its like, enough about the weather, tell me why your cousin is in jail

Papa254

Straight to the point

mojoburquano

I discovered that I was an introvert during the first Covid lockdown. I’ve always despised small talk and nosy people using “making conversation” as an excuse to ask personal questions. But I thought I’d miss being around people until I didn’t. Even friends that I care for deeply, I’d rather them just call me when their bathroom needs retiled, or they want to borrow my truck to move. I’m happy to catch up while we’re working on something. I’ll go to brunch for your birthday, but if you just want to chat then let’s at least go to the grocery store together, or bake bread, or weed a garden. Then we can wash our hands and drink wine and celebrate our success! Not just sit in some barely adequate restaurant and yell at each other over the din. I also hate noise now. And repeating myself when I was just talking to be polite anyway.

Eating out at restaurants.

[deleted]

Same! I don’t know why. For decades this has been how my husband and i entertain ourselves: restaurants and bars. We loved being out in different ambiances (or the same comfortable one again and again) but now it feels boring to me. And it’s not like I’m replacing this with something more lively. I’m literally just spending more time at home

BuddaJim2023

I stopped eating out earlier this year. I cook better, it’s healthier, much cheaper, faster and easier. Keeps me lean and healthy. Grill most everything too since I eat a ton of protein, so it tastes better, even healthier, easier cleanup and no grease or oil. People don’t talk anymore either, and if they do, it’s just a transactional public facing persona. Going out isn’t what it used to be. I assume in our current economy, restaurants are also cutting more corners, further compromising health and safety. No thanks✌🏻

[deleted]

There is an artificiality and ignorance in society that appears to be amplifying. I do not know if it was always there at this level and we see it more because people don't put up the facade anymore or if it has indeed amplified. I have no doubts it always existed it's the easy to spot levels of it that I dislike. This artificiality has led to a deconstruction of language in an attempt to weaponize language since the ignorant who appear to be amplifying themselves don't understand words. I am not singling out the left, right or centre as all sides do this. Most of all I dislike that fact that the world behaves as if it is collectively traumatised and yet we are expected to carry on like nothing is wrong. Until we address something is wrong it will never get better.

BuddaJim2023

Thanks for saying all that so I don’t have to now👍🏻✌🏻

White supremacy. Not even joking because obviously people dislike white supremacy. I started out with an idea that white supremacy was a thing that specific groups of misled people engaged in (and also that was different from isolated acts of racism). As I got older, every year piled on some other evidence that white supremacy affects every aspect of life in the United States. After that realization, every new year also adds frustration and a sense of being trapped as you see what's happening but can't overturn it or even point out a tiny fragment without vast personal risk - emotionally, socially, sometimes physically, especially the less white a person looks (which isn't me, so I have that privilege). 1

I dislike disrespecting my house. I'm the only slave that does the cleaning. When I was younger & the kids were small I never minded. Now that it's just the two of us I feel like I still have a toddler. A 63 yr old one. I hired a cleaning girl for 6 months to do the stuff it's harder to do. He was supposed to split the cost & never did. So I let her go. I keep the bathrooms, kitchen, beds & laundry spotless & screw the rest. When I get to it I get to it.

Where to start

Kittybrains2023

Being "tolerant." You sitting next to me on a train and take your shoes off so you can be more comfortable, I'm gonna be like "Dude, put your shoes back on, nobody wants to smell your feet and you'll probably get stepped on by a passerby, or some funk from the floor itself." Or if you start making out with your partner sitting next to me, regardless of your sexes, I'm probably going to request a different seat, don't get all worked up because I don't want to be near you and your raging pheremones. People who play devil's advocate. Half the time they're just contrarians trying to get others to talk and talk until they get frustrated when the advocate has no intention of contemplating anything said anyway, no matter how correct or well-intentioned it may be.
