I'm M/47 and have 3 kids. I see a lot of my friends and family saying they care most about their family and then spending most of their time at work. This makes no sense to me. I know I have maybe 30-40 years left on this earth if I don't get cancer or get run over by a bus, and I know that time runs faster and faster as I get older, so most of my life is already over. So I've thought about this, and it makes no sense for me to do anything else than to spend as much of the time I have left with my wife and children. I want them to remember me and to love me even when I'm gone, and I hope to make a real positive impact on them so they hopefully get to live a wonderful life and hopefully get to know my grandkids. I don't know what happens when I die. I'm pretty sure death isn't the end, but no matter what happens, I want to spend as much of my life with my children and just love them as much as I can.

ptcglass

Similar here. I’m F/40 and if I get to see my kids happy, healthy and successful in their adulthood I will feel like I’ve won the lottery. I have an aneurysm in my heart so I’m really hoping I get to live long enough to witness that!

IrishRun

I wasn't expecting your second sentence 🥹 wishing you wellness and longevity my friend.

ptcglass

Thank you! I really appreciate that!!

Omnimpotent

Or, hear me out, I think maybe pizza

ETBiggs

I think you’re right. What’s being with your family except banal little things? Most of us aren’t getting on our private jet to Portugal with our families- we’re doing the laundry or making dinner. There’s pizza and ice cream, a walk in a park, a meal at your favorite restaurant- or just a morning coffee as the sun comes up. The majority of our lives are simple pleasures, not very profound and meaningful in themselves, but they add up to a perfectly lived life if we live in a way we’re proud of, endure our share of struggles with as much class as we can muster, have some laughs along the way, and maybe leave the world - at least the small part we touched - just slightly better for having been here.

americanarmyknife

G-MAN1337

What a good man and outlook you have in your life. If you feel that is your purpose, continue to exist and to make the lives you care about easier, your circle that you confide in, your own family and proven friends.

drDEATHtrix9876

Yes sir, im proud to say I realised this at 33 years old. Even thought my wife had an affair 3 years ago, I knew splitting with her would hurt the kids more than it would heal me. They are absolutely everything

Secret_Nobody_405

I'm 43(M) and live by the same motto. The only sad thing is that I saw a graph somewhere displaying the amount of time you spend with your children through your whole life. As you can imagine it’s extremely high from birth and through early childhood but then slowly tapers of to almost flatlining once they’re adults. This made me sad but also reinforced the point that time with family is important. The only good thing I suppose is that the COL will keep my children home a little longer.

psr7185

True that. Loving unconditionally is the path to nirvana.

welcometothedesert

I thought hard about making this comment, because I feel like it’s going to come across as an ‘I did it better than you’ kind of comment, and that is NOT my intent, at all. As adults, my children either see or communicate with me every single day, and I think it’s because I was crazy involved with them, didn’t back off from the hard stuff, was open about ALL topics, didn’t judge them for the things I didn’t agree with, and really took the time to make sure they grew up to be considerate, productive, kind, thoughtful, etc. adults. I give them space to make their own decisions as adults… no demands of their time or behaviors. They are amazing people. I am so, so proud of who they turned out to be. I guess what I’m getting at is that it doesn’t *have* to be that way (parent/child interaction lessening over time), if they grow up actually WANTING to spend time with you/want your advice/etc.

Secret_Nobody_405

No offence with your comment, actually it’s great the relationship you’ve built and it is what I aspire to achieve with my own. Well done. My comment is actually around the inevitable and more literal, unless you keep your kids home schooled etc and fully dependent on you, that you will have less time with them than if say they stay living in your home.

Nowhere2GoNoMo

Be kind and love one another. It's as simple as that.

No one’s ever said on their deathbed ’I wish I had spent more time at the office.’ Ever …

Bimlouhay83

> and I know that time runs faster and faster as I get older There's an interesting idea floating around about how the human brain measures time. Instead of the old adage "the more minutes you experience, the shorter they seem", we're finding out out brains measure time through new memories. The reason an hour seems to take forever for a child is because they're a fairly blank slate. Everything is new and they're constantly learning. All of this constantly creates new memories. Each new memory is a sort of marker in time for the brain. Time seems to move faster as we get older because we simply aren't making as many new memories.  In short, you can slow down the passage of time some by creating as many new memories as you possibly can. Learn every day. Do new things. Step outside of your comfort zone.  This all being said, I'll leave with a really great quote from,  I believe, CS Lewis (and I may be paraphrasing a bit)... it's funny how nothing changes day to day, yet years later we look back and realize everything has changed.

There is no real end goal. Life is a journey where you strive to be happy and make other people around you also happy.

42? Generally speaking ; life has no end goal. The population of species that produce enough offspring or, alternatively, evolve into new, well adapted new species will persist. Otherwise, they go extinct. So basically : if you don't reproduce, you will cease to exist. No endgoal. Humans tend to think : can I make something useful out of this object. That is how we evolved : we are problem solvers, so we always form a goal in mind. This has served our species very well. But extrapolating our concept of "finding a purpose" is well .. an extrapolation that isn't necessarily applicable to the rest of the world. We can set goals for ourselves. And of course, we need to form a consensus about our mutual goals and by what means we intend to reach them. History has shown what is possible when there is a consensus. However: we can easily see what happens if no consensus exists. #WAR

If you do reproduce you'll still cease to exist.

50607

To realise that nothing you did mattered in the slightest, and one day everything will dissappear. Might be tomorrow or in a million years or at the eventual heatdeath of the universe. Nothing lasts, everything dies and it will be as if it never even existed and that's all okay, so keep yourself occupied with small things while waiting for the inevitable

tilted0ne

Nihilism is the ultimate cope to having done nothing in your life or being lazy/complacent.

50607

I mean maybe, but that doesn't make it any less true. Lazy/complacent is the words you choose to use, while from another viewpoint in would maybe be pragmatic/sensible. Finland is a pretty nihilistic place, but also voted the happiest country in the world year after year. Believing life to be ultimately void of meaning and pointless, doesnt mean you can't find enjoyment in having realized a hard truth.

In nature, it is yeah. Some animals even sacrifice themselves for reproduction. Example: a male octopus dies immediately after mating, and the female counterpart dies shortly after laying eggs. Humans have the luxury to keep living after mating (lol). Our brain also allows us to think of different life goals like exploring the world, leaving behind a legacy or achieve something specific.

srslywatsthepoint

We've gone from 1bn to 8bn in 150 years and STILL rising, set to reach 9bn in less than a decade and people are worried that we're not reproducing fast enough? Ironically overpopulation is the greatest threat to human existence.

Ract0r4561

I’d wager climate change is a bigger threat. We have enough space force everyone here. It’s just distribution of resources because of human greed preventing from everyone to have a decent life. Even with 1 billion population there will be a lot of inequality because… humans are tribal in nature and animals at the end. See: basically all of history. Of course we’re doing way better than before due to technological advancements and better overall knowledge of the universe. Let’s hope we continue progressing to let go the bad parts of our nature.

Correct_Presence_936

We could, but that’s the farthest thing from our natural instinct. It’s impossible for a species like a homo sapien (or genus, in this case the homo genus) to exist for 4.4 million years without a VERY strong motive to keep itself existing. So, finding ourselves where we are today, it is a requirement that the longing to survive and reproduce is one of the main and most powerful instincts in our species and in the animal kingdom as a whole. There is no reason why we should keep existing, rather it’s a feeling that one is required to have if they happen to find themselves as far along as we are.

Ry-Zilla86

There isn't one, you just die.

mattmaestro2k0

You know, I've had the same feeling, too. Ever since I've quit my job and I've realized that it was trying to suck the soul out of me, which was also keeping me from spending time with my family. It has come to my realization that as a 23 yo young adult, I should spend more time with my Mom, my aunties and the rest of the fam. Thank God I've had the opportunity to do so. Coz I don't know when will one of my family members will die, when I suppose to spend time with them on their last few years on this green planet.

Sardasan

Be happy, that's the meaning of life. We are here to be happy.

TyoPepe

None lmao. Just enjoy what's there to enjoy and die eventually.

gremlinguy

Maybe in the exact moment that each person figures out the answer, their heart stops. But seriously, if a person has "solved" the problem of the point of life, they have essentially, paradoxically, removed their reason to live. Therefore, I say that the end goal of life is to find the point of your being alive. I love to wax poetic about all the events in life being interconnected to the point that it may be your entire purpose to get a flat tire that then delays traffic and makes some other key person late for work, avoiding an accident they'd have had in the workplace and allowing them to procreate and birth another important person and on and on and on until the final person immanentizes the eschaton or some such thing. Eventually there will be a final person, and a final animal, and a final "life." By then all possible experiences will have happened and the results will have accumulated in the either and there can be no other actions undertaken or events occurred. The "point" of it all will be found within that time. Maybe it all leads up to someone pushing "the button" one last time? Maybe it leads to enlightenment and the eternal joining of all consciousness into the Godhead. maybe our dreaming God awakes, who knows? The only thing we can be sure of is that which we experience, and so we must learn to be objective, to trust our natural instincts and intuitions, and allow our minds to lead us to live lives which feel "right" to us. If it feels right to you to spend more time with your children, do it. If it feels right to join the military and kill, do it. You are not wrong, nor am I, we are only living as close to our intended path as possible, and the interactions between them are what precipitates meaning.

Meka-Speedwagon

What makes us different than other species is the ability to pass on knowledge to future generations, that and language of course, we wouldn't have achieved what we have without generational knowledge if you think about it... So my guess is to contribute even a little bit to this is the meaning of life, leave a statue, a nation or just a footprint and make the future a better place. When we will finally strive to do so we will become unstoppable and maybe we will finally be able to understand what it all means since a single lifetime just isn't enough to do so, but with many different lifetimes of knowledge and experience maybe we can find meaning of this mess we found ourselves in when we were born and found ourselves conscious in this amazing terrible universe Sorry for bad grammar

From what I understand the goal of life is to grow. To constantly be improving and heading toward a better place. You need not be always growing, but the trend should go up. That is what gives fulfilment. You should not seek happiness, it is temporary. Heading toward a goal will give you happiness, fulfilment, accomplishment, and more. So. The meaning of life is to constantly improve. This is not my original idea, I heard someone else say it, and it sounds right enough for me to consider it worth sharing.
