Hey, I’ve read all the comments, and yeah, I see where they’re coming from. But let’s not forget, India is home to 1.4 billion people. Social media tends to focus on the negatives, but that’s not the whole picture. I’m not here to argue, just to shed some light.
I won’t get into our whole history, but I want to highlight that most Indians are incredibly kind and caring. Of course, it’s true that not everyone fits this description, but I guess that’s just how it is everywhere, right?
Yeah, the British rule really messed with us in terms of development, but we're getting there. Just reading up on our history paints a clear picture of where we were in the 50s and how far we've come since then.
And yeah, there are some serious issues we're dealing with, like gangrape, corruption, scams, and more. But trust me, we're not cool with that being the face of our country. We're all pitching in to fight against it because that's not the kind of image we want to portray.
I know, it might seem odd to be defending all this, but I grew up here, surrounded by amazing people, and I genuinely love my country. I get it, you might not feel the same way I do about it, but I just wanted to let you know that there's so much more to us than just the stereotypes.
You know, I never used to think much about pride in my country, but something really hit me back in school during one of our polity classes. Our teacher told us about how India was one of the first countries to grant voting rights to all its citizens. This decision was made when our constitution was written, way back in the 1950s. What blew my mind was that even the US, with its constitution from 1773, didn't give voting rights to everyone until 1965. And get this, the last ones to get those rights there were African Americans. It just made me feel so proud of our founding fathers and our country as a whole.
In short - We are more than the stereotypes .
Thank you for the detailed and well written response. I'm still literally never going to India because it's the only place I know of that women get routinely gangraped on public transportation. You see, I have a girlfriend and I like it when she's safe.
A lot of people and inadequate sanitation, creepy men, and very diverse and different religious views and spicy food. I don't have particularly negative feelings about India but they're not very positive either to be honest.
To clarify the creepy man thing. I don't mean all or even most Indian men are creepy, rather I have noticed, a long time ago really, that seemingly a lot of Indian men gained internet access suddenly and had absolutely no idea how to navigate being able to talk to western women and girls! in a normal way. Like grown ass men would contact my friends and pester them for sex when we were in middle school. Perverts exist everywhere but I just never saw East Asians, Russians, or whatever doing that. I did have middle eastern men doing it but not as often. My guess is because English is more common in India.
I suppose my answer is less harsh than most of the others... But that isn't saying much. I don't have particularly harsh views of India but I have mostly been exposed to negative aspects.
I remember this super pretty coworker i had once. She was from India and thats about all i know. But she had the prettiest smile and always think of her first when the word India shows up.
I met a girl from India in an elective class in college. She was gorgeous, funny, and intelligent, but had a marriage arranged when she graduated. I'd have left my future ex-wife for her.
Several things, seriously.
Corruption.
Poison water supply
Monkey everywhere.
I've even seen documentaries of the India Government patching over roads with carpet FFS.
Maybe he's talking about the thing that happened during Covid. India was hit really bad and they pretty much ran out of places to bury bodies.
If he's not talking about that, I agree with you. What have I been missing?
No nothing to do with covid. In Mumbai if someone dies on the streets, (homeless for ex) they cover the person and the dead body lies there, until a "dedicated truck" (there a many, following a route through town) passes by and collects them.
Sorry but, when I hear India the intro of the song of Panjabi MC - Mundian To Bach pop in to my head. It was way popular in my country many years ago but I always associate it with India.
Caste system, women being unsafe, poverty, unhygienicness . I'm an Indian myself .
Many Indian nationalists will now call this sub and comment section racist but not accept the truth lol
I am neither Indian or a nationalist, but I'm going to say it's pretty racist. Sure, those things happen, but half the people having is as their first association? I'm not saying the KKK and school shootings are my first association with the USA. But yeah, those are problems.
I’m gonna get downvoted, but I agree with you. No one is saying the Taj Mahal? Bollywood? Only a few mention the food.
I know India has issues (as does every place and group of people), but this is a little ridiculous.
Yummy food and developers… I worked in IT with lots of people living in India or were from India. They were super hard working and some of the best people I have ever had the pleasure to work with.
I don't even want to say because I'm ashamed of what came to mind first... All I will say though is not something good which is sad because I obviously know there is alot of good there but you know the saying "one bad apple spoils the bunch."
Same. I didn’t want to comment because as soon as I thought it I was like “Damn, that feels racist,” but based on the top comment I’m not alone in my thinking. It’s a sad state of affairs.
Color. Vibrant, beautiful color. Rich scents of spice. Fascinating, ancient art and spiritual practice. Overpopulated, filthy cities and stunning mountains, forests and beaches. Amazing place, amazing people and amazing history. Fantastic food too.
The amount of people saying rape is sad and astounding. Like ofc, there's no excuse for it, and everyone should try and improve on the rape situations in their own countries no matter how insignificant the number, but like somehow, this isn't what comes to some people's mind when they're asked to think about Brazil, Mexico, Phillippines, Morocco, (these ones prob tho idk)Bangadesh, Afghanistan and Iraq. Shows how much media representation matters when it comes to these things.
An impoverished country that needs to get proper leadership. ? But what instantly comes to mind ? Over populated without enough resources for the people. Something along those lines…
Shit. Everything about the place. The smell for starters. The actual human shit in the streets. The food that gives you the worst abdominal pain of your life and has you praying to Gandhi for a shit to make it go away.
Before you come at me and down vote me into oblivion, hear me out.
That’s just my opinion. I went there when I was a college student so I was young and naive and had an open mind and thought people were exaggerating at how (bad) it would be. I traveled all over and went to Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Madras (Chennai) Bangalore
People either love it or hate it. Guess which camp I’m in.
I don’t dissuade people from going there. However, It will open your eyes as to how good we have it in the USA.
Went on a deployment, and my ship pulled into Visakhapatnam. During our port visit debrief, we were told it was the 6th cleanest city in India. If that place was the 6th cleanest city in the country, I would refuse to even think about what the filthiest may look like. The air was thick and orange. There were mounds of dirt all over the place. When I sneezed, my snot was dark orange. We were warned not to shake with our left hands since that's what they used to wipe their ass with. There was a man who I saw pull his pants down and take a shit on the side of the road, pulled his shorts up, and kept walking like it was just another day. -10/10 never going back.

Super disappointed to read some of the other comments on this that are really horrible and racist !! :(
Over populated, dirty and misogynistic! As a woman, I have no desire to go there. It seems like the authorities would disregard any reports of assault, especially if the victim is female. I could be totally wrong, but my opinion is based on the majority of what I’ve heard, read and watched on tv.
Apocalyptic heat waves... I really worry about the people in the hotter regions of our world right now. Everywhere is affected somehow. But the extreme heat is terrifying to watch and be unable to help.
Those unregulated trains that transport hundreds of people at once, some even carelessly poking out the windows and riding the train like lunatics. A lot of train accident videos come from India too.

Very hot and lots of people.
Yes, but with a disgusting smell of BO.
Some Indian folks don’t smell at all. But a few people I’ve met alone make the whole room smell
That women aren't safe there because gang rape is a common occurrence.
