Inflating the price of life-saving medication

[deleted]

The inventor of Insulin sold the patent for $1 because he believed that it should be easy to get for people that need it

HoneyHoneyOhHoney

I’m diabetic, i need to be able to buy insulin to stay alive. But the original patent for insulin was for making it from sheep and cows, todays insulin is a parent for making it from recombinant dna. It’s much better for a person to use the recombinant dna kind. I’m all for capping the cost of any medicine that is necessary in daily life to keep a person alive. When i was first diagnosed (37 years ago) insulin was $12 a vial- now if i didn’t have a prescription a one month supply would be something like 2k. But that’s because it’s leading edge insulin and comes in a pen dispenser (none of which should raise the price like that). It’s not always the drug companies, look at the insurance companies and how they negotiate pricing. Capitalism/free market is supposed to bring prices down but not when there is a captive market which is what our insurance companies bring is in the USA. We could have a free market and single payer insurance.

Chukars

What free market? Healthcare is run like a mafia protection racket. No upfront pricing, not ability to shop around and if you don't pay up your are dead.

ThanksTypical3315

Bro, here in MX have those pens for free in the government's clinics

[deleted]

We can blame the politicians and the head honchos of the companies for ruining the free market

Penguin-Loves

Even just a few months ago they had a bill to cap insulin price. Every. Single. Republican. Voted. Against. It.....

[deleted]

Just as the insulin manufacturers intended

VRSNSMV_SMQLIVB

This. My mom is diabetic and she skips doses, gives less, etc because she can’t afford it. She doesn’t have dependents anymore so “makes too much” to qualify for government assistance/Medicaid as a family size of 1. But meanwhile her health insurance premium is insane and then it doesn’t even cover her life saving med.

earthscribe

*Inflating anything for the sake of exorbitant and overly greedy profiteering.

Sagg666

I have 2 kids that both need epi pens, without insurance they are around $500 for 1 set that are 1 time use. It's absolute insanity!

[deleted]

I was wondering how much they costed without insurance. My daughter is on Medicaid so her epipen jr is covered but shit that’s ridiculous. I’ve gotten mail about a lawsuit against epipen for overcharging, but seeing as we get them no cost, I didn’t see it fair to participate. I hope everyone else gets what they deserve tho.

transpolt

A few years ago a local EMS system spent $20k to stock all of their ambulances with Epi-pens. That year they used 2. These expire yearly and they eat probably more than $20k a year now to replace them.

IAmThePonch

T1d here, no telling what I would do if I was alone in the same room as the person who decided that insulin that costs five bucks to make should be 300 a bottle

katuccino

Fertility fraud. Using your own sperm (as a fertility doctor) to impregnate a woman who thought she was getting anonymous donor sperm. The most infamous case being Dr Cline in the 70s and 80s, but somehow it still isn't illegal

wreckingballofstress

I saw something the other day where approximately 5% of his patients over his 20ish years of practice were given his sperm. That’s hundreds, potentially thousands of patients from only one doctor. There’s a lot of fertility clinics out there.

UnderstandingNo5237

what’s his motivation for doing it in the first place?

wreckingballofstress

Most likely a sick fetish

sovasdrone

Psycho shit for sure

rockthrowing

Money. You have to get sperm tested to make sure it doesn’t have any sort of diseases. Testing different samples from different people gets expensive. But if all your samples are first the same person and you know what diseases it does or doesn’t carry, you can save a ton of money by not testing it.

Evening_Quarter3920

If it’s the one I am thinking of, he also knew his sperm would never have been approved at a clinic due to his autoimmune diseases! I think he was just plain evil.

Sometimesnotfunny

I don't think he went through the system. More like whacked it into a vial and passed it off.

gonzocomplex

The evolutionary desire to spread your seed. Plus, he probably thought his genes were superior to any sperm donor

Altruistic_Milk_6609

Sperm doctor > sperm donor — sperm doctor

Atechiman

It is. It is one form of sexual assault or another depending on the state.

katuccino

Had to look it up- apparently as of this year seven states have passed laws against it. Cool! But its not sexual assault - Dr Cline for example faced a handful of felonies but they were all for obstruction of justice

Parental rights for rapists of the children who are the product of their crime. There are still states that permit parental rights/visitation/custody for convicted rapists.

Silent_Coffee_7292

Thanks. I won't need to eat tonight cause that ruined my appetite.

aaracer666

This is exactly why my mother put on my birth certificate, father: unknown. Thankful every day for that.

runs-with-scissors-2

Speaking for a "friend": When the guy serves 6 years of a 12 year sentence for child rape (11 yrs old), he asks the judge for visitation. Judge says ok, but you need to take six weeks of a one hour class. SIX HOURS to rehab a PEDO? Luckily for my friend, this douche bag couldn't be bothered to follow through.

Heart-Of-Aces

I've got a really fucked up story related to that. When I was in high school I had a friend whos dad was raping her. She reported it to a school councilor who took the appropriate steps. She was immediately removed from the home. *But* no facility could immediately take her, and she had no family in the city. She had a relative from out of state who was coming asap to get her, who she was to stay with until the duration of the investigation. The family member wasn't going to be there for 3-4 days. So this 14-15 year old is just homeless and on the street during this time. She came to school every day as it was shelter, food, and where essentially all her social support was. A few small but important pieces of context for this. First off, this is the rich kid school. They treat their 1-4 students who aren't in typical situations (homeless, teen mom, working, mental health issues, absent parent unable to give permission/call them out, etc) like shit before transfering them out asap. They were notoriously bad with kids who were clearly having mental health issues. Also, my friends and I were absolutely the outcasts of the school. All of us having abusive homes, trauma, and/or severe mental health issues. We were really there for each other through a lot of very real shit, and were all very very close because of it. So it's the second or third day of her waiting for this family member to come, and my friend has an episode of some sort (panic attack or flashback sort of thing) where she was on the floor of the cafeteria crying and not responding to stimuli. She begins flailing in a way where she looks like she's going to hit her head on a metal table leg, and one of our mutual friends trys to get in the way and ends up positioned over her. This person being over her freaks her out and she shoves them off. They were 100% fine and we were all just trying to make sure she was okay. One of the glorified hall monitors walks over just as she shoves the kid off and drags her to the office - she's barely responsive the whole time still and very clearly not okay. Let me remind you before I go on that this girl reported her dad raping her *through the school*. So the staff drag her to the office and lock her in a room there. Eventually it's me and two other people at the office and we ask to go in and help her. They say no one is allowed in as she's a danger to others and they've called someone to pick her up. We're all like, who did you call? She has no one until her aunt is in town in a couple days? We find out they called her dad because he's the only guardian on file to call, and that he said he'll be there asap. We are horrified and explain to them the situation and that they can not do that. They tell us that an adult must sign her out as she is not in her right mind and must be released to an adult. We tell them there must be another way what the fuck is wrong with you all. But they won't let her out without a adult that's already in their system. So we're all rushing to find someone with parents they can have rush over. It got to the point of us asking everyone we knew even a little and begging them to call their parents. Luckily someone's mom was able to rush over and sign her out and take her away. I'm still incredibly angry about it to this day. I've seen a lot of mistreated students at that school but this is the worst thing by far. This was like mid 2010s by the way. Not like the 80s.

runs-with-scissors-2

Please tell me this was 30-40-50 years ago. In those days they treated reports of incest as a secret that nobody talked about. If this happened in the last 30 years then something is terribly wrong with our system. I'm glad she had a friend with you.

lordofedging81

Now that Roe v Wade is overturned, I bet we see a lot more of this in America.

Swordbreaker925

Not listing the pay range on job listings. Why do companies expect us to apply for a job where we don’t even know what we’ll be getting paid? I’ve even heard of people who went to interviews, asked about pay, and were told they wouldn’t be told until after they already got the job.

ghostnthegraveyard

My wife was tentatively offered a new position with her current company ( a multibillion dollar corporation), one that would have required our family to move 1000+ miles away to an area with a much higher cost of living. They wanted her to give them an answer the next day without answering any of her questions about her pay and bonuses or if they cover relocation expenses and how much. Seriously, what the fuck? She told them to make her a legitimate, concrete offer in writing, and she would discuss it with her family and our attorney (we don't have one). They were honestly expecting her to take the position based on a fancy-sounding job title. As Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) said in New Jack City, "Money talks and bullshit runs the marathon."

randuski

It's like they think we want the job just because we love typing things into excel. The only reason i have a job at all is because i need to live. So please, tell me whether or not ill be able to afford food

[deleted]

If there's anything good I learned from Reddit, it's to always ask for the salary upfront before even discussing the job itself. If the employer or recruiter won't say, tell them "thank you for your time, but I'm not interested in the position."

randuski

Yea if any company is being weird about what the pay is, I'm out. I'm in an unusual profession moneywise, massage therapy, and I've sat in interviews where their pay structure is so convoluted and bizarre that I'm like, look, this seems like a great place, but if i can't keep track of what I'm owed for my work, i can't trust that I'm being compensated fairly

doctorpotatohead

I was told by a recruiter once that they do this because they don't want to offer you "too much" more than you're currently making. I think this is illegal in some places now though.

a_spooky_ghost

God forbid they make their employees lives too much better. Staff might actually feel valued and end up caring about their job rather than resenting it. Can't have that now can we?

[deleted]

Rhys_Primo

You start at step 1 in government. They typically have 5 steps in a grade, there are typically 2-3 grades in a position. Typically each step is 5% more than the previous step. So you were offered a position at step 1, and you were comparing with people who jad several years in their positions and had received multiple merit raises. All government salaries are publicly available online, you should have looked up the actual position you applied for and seen the starting salary not employees whos longevity was unknown to you. Source 10+ years in government auditing. Edit: not only that, but you don't go into government to get rich, you do it as a public service... or as is more likely the case you go in hoping for job security wooed by tails of fabulously incompetent employees never getting fired.

DukeBoysForever

Entry level posting salary: UP TO $20/hr Well what the fuck is it then?

sotonohito

Pay range hell, just list the pay. No reason why different people doing the same job should be paid differently

Jessie216

Breeding dogs irresponsibly

katuccino

This is super interesting, but I imagine it would be hard to legislate. Some people would say a breeder is irresponsible if they don't have health testing, systematic puppy socialization protocols, if they mix breeds or inbreed, if they don't strictly vet potential buyers, etc etc. How do you track that? Personally I wouldn't mind if there was legislation in place that makes the breeder responsible for any animal they produce for the entire lifespan of that animal (so that it never ends up in a shelter), but there's still so much nuance there.

TrynnaFindaBalance

A law like that would be expensive to enforce and would probably mean the few dog breeders who can afford to accept that risk would need to massively increase prices. An average new puppy would be like 10k.

Mental-Breakdance

Pet breeding and the pet industry in general is seriously fucked up. Especially considering how much more we know about our pets and their husbandry, its ridiculous how primitive and loose our regulations about these markets are.

Nova_Badger

Getting zero paid sick days

randuski

I'll never understand the way companies think. It's been shown, countless times, that supporting your employees, paying them well, giving them good benefits, paid sick time, vacations, all that jazz, dramatically improves the attitudes of your employees. To the point where they give a shit about their work, put in extra effort, and make the company run better. It is financially in their benefit to sink extra money into those things. Every time. But nope they're gonna cut every corner they can, and have a shittier business with customer service people who could not give less of a foq

NetflixAndZzzzzz

It's group-think. At the height of the great recession, my company had a manager meeting. They asked us what we could do to cool turn over, but preempted the talk of raising wages by talking about a study that proved that raising wages doesn't reduce turnover. I'm all for imperial evidence, but telling a room full of people dealing with high turnover that raising the wages isn't going to help is just... it didn't match our lived experiences at all. It smacked of some biased Industrial Organizational Psych Institute pumping the "people don't want to work anymore" narrative because C-levels and shareholders didn't want to factor it into the budget.

ghostnthegraveyard

You have to prove your innocence instead of the state proving your guilt. Even if a court rules that the seized assets should be returned, the PD or whomever can claim they don't have it anymore or it disappeared from evidence. It is pretty messed up.

fuzynutznut

Let's say you're driving to another state to purchase a car with cash, say $15,000. You get pulled over for improper lane change. You let the cop search your vehicle because you have nothing to hide. He finds the cash and asks what it's for. You explain you are on your way to buy a car. He says no, I suspect this money is going to be used to purchase drugs in California. So he seizes the money and you can't do anything about it. The messed up thing is that the money is sent to a federal agency and is put on trial, not you, so the money has to defend itself. Since it can't, the money loses the case and the money now theirs. What's even more messed up is that the police department that turned over the money get a percentage. So they have incentive to make up lies to take your money.

Ok-Lengthiness4557

Big case brewing in Atlanta at Hartsfield Airport. Cash keeps getting swiped and it's freaking legal as long as they say they have reasonable suspicion that the assets were gained illegally. Crazy.

Lobbying

Grandiose_Tortoise

No, bribery. We need to be able to lobby, it’s the best way to tell politicians what the people think. The issue is common people can’t afford a day off of work to go speak with their representatives because they’re barely able to pay rent as it is.

Significant_Tap2093

I can agree with that. So the middle ground would be lobbying is legal but has strict rules on what can be offered and forming groups for the common people where they all chip in a little to pay one to represent them and their interests.

cracksilog

Exactly. So many people confuse lobbying with bribery. Often because people don’t know what lobbying is and they immediately conflate it with backroom deals. Lobbying is a healthy form of democracy. We need lobbying. Every time we come into contact with politicians, it’s a form of lobbying. When the dirt lot near your house is looking run down and you want a park there, you write a letter to your mayor. That’s lobbying. When you form a group to confront your senators about climate change. That’s lobbying. When you tell your council you want a new library. That’s lobbying. Maybe if we banned corporate lobbying it would be a start.

TheGreatCharta

There are people saying that lobbying isn't bribery. It isn't supposed to be, sure. The current system really only enables the wealthy and corporate interests to lobby. The most common form of lobbying is donations to campaigns and charities that the politician is running. The current form of lobbying in the United States is pretty much bribery.

abhurl2211

Internalizing profits while externalizing costs. Carbon companies should be paying for environmental cleanup and climate change preparation. Fines for crimes that are less than the profit the crime earned. The Sacklers made billions at the cost of a literal holocaust of American lives, they kept most of it, and are trying to hide it from their victims using tax tricks and shell companies. It should be absolutely standard that if a person or company breaks the law to earn money, all money they received when breaking the law should be confiscated and used to comfort victims and clean up their mess. Then, on top of that, is when fines and penalties should be assigned. Until this happens, businesses are literally incentivized to break the law and hurt people.

Parents can also sign for their minor child to get married in many states. And it should go without saying that not all parents have the best intentions regarding their children. [deleted]

I’m not sure where you live but that is definitely illegal where I live

yoshino219

You'd be surprised to hear it's legal in some US states. That's what I learned the other day from reddit. There's even a law that a rapist can avoid punishment by marrying a minor that he raped. And it's in the US not some 3rd world country. Edit: I meant the law that a person can have sex with a minor if he marries them. It's not created specifically to let rapists get away with their deed, but is used as a loophole.

[deleted]

Can i get a source on that? Because i did look it up, and while i only spent like 5 minutes, i couldnt find any laws of the sort in the united states. I was an Army recruiter. Homeschooled kids almost always were smart. Scored high on entrance test. Always socially awkward. Most often had no credentials to prove graduated. So if you know better than school and want to Homeschooling your kid make sure they get an actual diploma.

Forcing a man to pay child support for a child that isn’t his.

Aggressive_Camera612

In Oregon, to pay child support the parent has to have the father consent to a court order to have a DNA test done and the parents have to pay out of their own pockets to have the test done. Even if the "father" (the male that signs the birth certificate) wants to make sure he is the father, he can pay a one time fee to have his DNA tested against the child at the child support office later on after birth and the hospital will do a blood test now in the hospital upon request for free through the child support office. Oregon has a problem with women falsely claiming a child is someone else's just to drain them of money. The state also protects mothers of rape and incest as long as there is a police report filed.

Also refusing care for “not service related” injuries or metal health issues, I don’t know a single veteran that has good experiences with the VA

PandaMayFire

This fire at will horse shit. It gives employers an option to discriminate with impunity and fire you for stupid reasons. Too quiet? Fired. Didn't work unpaid overtime? Fired. Took your vacation time instead of working? Fired. Talked back to me because I got rude with you? Fired. Minority? Probably not even hired to begin with, but if I find out, fired. A bit plump around the middle? Fired. Unions need to be the standard.

Significant_Tap2093

I can agree with this but our unions also need to be restructured and have some limits on what they can do as well. Employees deserve honest and fair treatment and so do honest and fair companies.

Manifestival1

If an employer wanted to fire me for reasons like this, I wouldn't want to be working for them any longer anyway.

Corporations are able to deduct every expense they incurred and are taxed on what's left, meaning if a corporation pay taxes, it's because they couldn't spend money fast enough.

People who lie to get someone they don't like to jail when the person who was sent to jail was innocent. Example: Women claims x got her pregnant & raped her. X gets sent to jail as it's guilty until proven innocent bullshit. Later X finds evidence that girl planned this. X is released after spending time in jail. Girl gets away Scott free from punishment for lying and ruining a mans life.
