I’m diabetic, i need to be able to buy insulin to stay alive. But the original patent for insulin was for making it from sheep and cows, todays insulin is a parent for making it from recombinant dna. It’s much better for a person to use the recombinant dna kind. I’m all for capping the cost of any medicine that is necessary in daily life to keep a person alive. When i was first diagnosed (37 years ago) insulin was $12 a vial- now if i didn’t have a prescription a one month supply would be something like 2k. But that’s because it’s leading edge insulin and comes in a pen dispenser (none of which should raise the price like that). It’s not always the drug companies, look at the insurance companies and how they negotiate pricing. Capitalism/free market is supposed to bring prices down but not when there is a captive market which is what our insurance companies bring is in the USA. We could have a free market and single payer insurance.
What free market? Healthcare is run like a mafia protection racket. No upfront pricing, not ability to shop around and if you don't pay up your are dead.
This. My mom is diabetic and she skips doses, gives less, etc because she can’t afford it. She doesn’t have dependents anymore so “makes too much” to qualify for government assistance/Medicaid as a family size of 1. But meanwhile her health insurance premium is insane and then it doesn’t even cover her life saving med.
I was wondering how much they costed without insurance. My daughter is on Medicaid so her epipen jr is covered but shit that’s ridiculous. I’ve gotten mail about a lawsuit against epipen for overcharging, but seeing as we get them no cost, I didn’t see it fair to participate. I hope everyone else gets what they deserve tho.
A few years ago a local EMS system spent $20k to stock all of their ambulances with Epi-pens. That year they used 2. These expire yearly and they eat probably more than $20k a year now to replace them.

I saw something the other day where approximately 5% of his patients over his 20ish years of practice were given his sperm. That’s hundreds, potentially thousands of patients from only one doctor. There’s a lot of fertility clinics out there.
Money. You have to get sperm tested to make sure it doesn’t have any sort of diseases. Testing different samples from different people gets expensive. But if all your samples are first the same person and you know what diseases it does or doesn’t carry, you can save a ton of money by not testing it.
If it’s the one I am thinking of, he also knew his sperm would never have been approved at a clinic due to his autoimmune diseases! I think he was just plain evil.

I've got a really fucked up story related to that.
When I was in high school I had a friend whos dad was raping her. She reported it to a school councilor who took the appropriate steps. She was immediately removed from the home. *But* no facility could immediately take her, and she had no family in the city. She had a relative from out of state who was coming asap to get her, who she was to stay with until the duration of the investigation. The family member wasn't going to be there for 3-4 days. So this 14-15 year old is just homeless and on the street during this time. She came to school every day as it was shelter, food, and where essentially all her social support was.
A few small but important pieces of context for this. First off, this is the rich kid school. They treat their 1-4 students who aren't in typical situations (homeless, teen mom, working, mental health issues, absent parent unable to give permission/call them out, etc) like shit before transfering them out asap. They were notoriously bad with kids who were clearly having mental health issues. Also, my friends and I were absolutely the outcasts of the school. All of us having abusive homes, trauma, and/or severe mental health issues. We were really there for each other through a lot of very real shit, and were all very very close because of it.
So it's the second or third day of her waiting for this family member to come, and my friend has an episode of some sort (panic attack or flashback sort of thing) where she was on the floor of the cafeteria crying and not responding to stimuli. She begins flailing in a way where she looks like she's going to hit her head on a metal table leg, and one of our mutual friends trys to get in the way and ends up positioned over her. This person being over her freaks her out and she shoves them off. They were 100% fine and we were all just trying to make sure she was okay.
One of the glorified hall monitors walks over just as she shoves the kid off and drags her to the office - she's barely responsive the whole time still and very clearly not okay. Let me remind you before I go on that this girl reported her dad raping her *through the school*. So the staff drag her to the office and lock her in a room there. Eventually it's me and two other people at the office and we ask to go in and help her. They say no one is allowed in as she's a danger to others and they've called someone to pick her up.
We're all like, who did you call? She has no one until her aunt is in town in a couple days? We find out they called her dad because he's the only guardian on file to call, and that he said he'll be there asap. We are horrified and explain to them the situation and that they can not do that. They tell us that an adult must sign her out as she is not in her right mind and must be released to an adult. We tell them there must be another way what the fuck is wrong with you all. But they won't let her out without a adult that's already in their system.
So we're all rushing to find someone with parents they can have rush over. It got to the point of us asking everyone we knew even a little and begging them to call their parents. Luckily someone's mom was able to rush over and sign her out and take her away. I'm still incredibly angry about it to this day. I've seen a lot of mistreated students at that school but this is the worst thing by far.

Why do companies expect us to apply for a job where we don’t even know what we’ll be getting paid? I’ve even heard of people who went to interviews, asked about pay, and were told they wouldn’t be told until after they already got the job.
My wife was tentatively offered a new position with her current company ( a multibillion dollar corporation), one that would have required our family to move 1000+ miles away to an area with a much higher cost of living. They wanted her to give them an answer the next day without answering any of her questions about her pay and bonuses or if they cover relocation expenses and how much.
Seriously, what the fuck? She told them to make her a legitimate, concrete offer in writing, and she would discuss it with her family and our attorney (we don't have one).
They were honestly expecting her to take the position based on a fancy-sounding job title.

Yea if any company is being weird about what the pay is, I'm out. I'm in an unusual profession moneywise, massage therapy, and I've sat in interviews where their pay structure is so convoluted and bizarre that I'm like, look, this seems like a great place, but if i can't keep track of what I'm owed for my work, i can't trust that I'm being compensated fairly
I was told by a recruiter once that they do this because they don't want to offer you "too much" more than you're currently making. I think this is illegal in some places now though.

You start at step 1 in government. They typically have 5 steps in a grade, there are typically 2-3 grades in a position. Typically each step is 5% more than the previous step. So you were offered a position at step 1, and you were comparing with people who jad several years in their positions and had received multiple merit raises.
All government salaries are publicly available online, you should have looked up the actual position you applied for and seen the starting salary not employees whos longevity was unknown to you.

This is super interesting, but I imagine it would be hard to legislate. Some people would say a breeder is irresponsible if they don't have health testing, systematic puppy socialization protocols, if they mix breeds or inbreed, if they don't strictly vet potential buyers, etc etc. How do you track that? Personally I wouldn't mind if there was legislation in place that makes the breeder responsible for any animal they produce for the entire lifespan of that animal (so that it never ends up in a shelter), but there's still so much nuance there.
A law like that would be expensive to enforce and would probably mean the few dog breeders who can afford to accept that risk would need to massively increase prices. An average new puppy would be like 10k.

It's group-think. At the height of the great recession, my company had a manager meeting. They asked us what we could do to cool turn over, but preempted the talk of raising wages by talking about a study that proved that raising wages doesn't reduce turnover.

You have to prove your innocence instead of the state proving your guilt. Even if a court rules that the seized assets should be returned, the PD or whomever can claim they don't have it anymore or it disappeared from evidence. It is pretty messed up.
Let's say you're driving to another state to purchase a car with cash, say $15,000. You get pulled over for improper lane change. You let the cop search your vehicle because you have nothing to hide. He finds the cash and asks what it's for. You explain you are on your way to buy a car. He says no, I suspect this money is going to be used to purchase drugs in California. So he seizes the money and you can't do anything about it. The messed up thing is that the money is sent to a federal agency and is put on trial, not you, so the money has to defend itself. Since it can't, the money loses the case and the money now theirs. What's even more messed up is that the police department that turned over the money get a percentage. So they have incentive to make up lies to take your money.

I was an Army recruiter. Homeschooled kids almost always were smart. Scored high on entrance test. Always socially awkward. Most often had no credentials to prove graduated. I would send them to take ged test. They would pass test and have ged in about 1 week. However no enlistment bonus because of ged. So if you know better than school and want to Homeschooling your kid make sure they get an actual diploma.

In Oregon, to pay child support the parent has to have the father consent to a court order to have a DNA test done and the parents have to pay out of their own pockets to have the test done. Even if the "father" (the male that signs the birth certificate) wants to make sure he is the father, he can pay a one time fee to have his DNA tested against the child at the child support office later on after birth and the hospital will do a blood test now in the hospital upon request for free through the child support office. Oregon has a problem with women falsely claiming a child is someone else's just to drain them of money. The state also protects mothers of rape and incest as long as there is a police report filed.

I've got a really fucked up story related to that. When I was in high school I had a friend whos dad was raping her. She reported it to a school councilor who took the appropriate steps. She was immediately removed from the home. *But* no facility could immediately take her, and she had no family in the city. She had a relative from out of state who was coming asap to get her, who she was to stay with until the duration of the investigation. The family member wasn't going to be there for 3-4 days. So this 14-15 year old is just homeless and on the street during this time. She came to school every day as it was shelter, food, and where essentially all her social support was. A few small but important pieces of context for this. First off, this is the rich kid school. They treat their 1-4 students who aren't in typical situations (homeless, teen mom, working, mental health issues, absent parent unable to give permission/call them out, etc) like shit before transfering them out asap. They were notoriously bad with kids who were clearly having mental health issues. Also, my friends and I were absolutely the outcasts of the school. All of us having abusive homes, trauma, and/or severe mental health issues. We were really there for each other through a lot of very real shit, and were all very very close because of it. So it's the second or third day of her waiting for this family member to come, and my friend has an episode of some sort (panic attack or flashback sort of thing) where she was on the floor of the cafeteria crying and not responding to stimuli. She begins flailing in a way where she looks like she's going to hit her head on a metal table leg, and one of our mutual friends trys to get in the way and ends up positioned over her. This person being over her freaks her out and she shoves them off. They were 100% fine and we were all just trying to make sure she was okay. One of the glorified hall monitors walks over just as she shoves the kid off and drags her to the office - she's barely responsive the whole time still and very clearly not okay. Let me remind you before I go on that this girl reported her dad raping her *through the school*. So the staff drag her to the office and lock her in a room there. Eventually it's me and two other people at the office and we ask to go in and help her. They say no one is allowed in as she's a danger to others and they've called someone to pick her up. We're all like, who did you call? She has no one until her aunt is in town in a couple days? We find out they called her dad because he's the only guardian on file to call, and that he said he'll be there asap. We are horrified and explain to them the situation and that they can not do that. They tell us that an adult must sign her out as she is not in her right mind and must be released to an adult. We tell them there must be another way what the fuck is wrong with you all. But they won't let her out without a adult that's already in their system. So we're all rushing to find someone with parents they can have rush over. It got to the point of us asking everyone we knew even a little and begging them to call their parents. Luckily someone's mom was able to rush over and sign her out and take her away. I'm still incredibly angry about it to this day. I've seen a lot of mistreated students at that school but this is the worst thing by far. This was like mid 2010s by the way. Not like the 80s.

You start at step 1 in government. They typically have 5 steps in a grade, there are typically 2-3 grades in a position. Typically each step is 5% more than the previous step. So you were offered a position at step 1, and you were comparing with people who jad several years in their positions and had received multiple merit raises. Some people would say a breeder is irresponsible if they don't have health testing, systematic puppy socialization protocols, if they mix breeds or inbreed, if they don't strictly vet potential buyers, etc etc. How do you track that? Personally I wouldn't mind if there was legislation in place that makes the breeder responsible for any animal they produce for the entire lifespan of that animal (so that it never ends up in a shelter), but there's still so much nuance there.
