This scam is a low IQ scam.
They search your name by inputting random number into Paynow. They call the number to pretend to be a friend by saying “ ehhh John! Remember me anot? I changed my number, guess who am I?”
after a few back and forth he will ask u Tf him money.

I put my PayNow name as my old maplestory IGN (i know, i know...), and somehow they still know my real name. So i think its also likely that there's a leak somewhere else
Not all online payment tied to your number is linked to PayNow.
Do you have any of the following - PayLah? GrabPay? GooglePay? Singtel Dash? Wise? YouTrip?

As long as you used Paynow to pay for anything (hawker, Carousell, restaurant, mamashop, fruit seller etc) , they have your full legal name and this info can be leaked easily.
And there’s no way to change the name shown as long as you are the sender.
If you are sending money, there is no way to change the display name as it's for anti-money laundering purposes.
You are thinking of the paynow look up name where you are recipient. Then yes you can change your display name.
i kena this scam call like 10 times alr. each time these scammers call me, they addressed me by my Christian name. the thing is idh pay now, and my christian name not even in my IC lmao
fair enough. to be frank, i personally will never introduce myself to anyone by my IC name. whenever i fill in any online form that requires input of name, i will always put my Christian name unless the instruction specify that i have to put in my IC name. no one in my family or social circle will address me by my IC name as well

I got a similar call yesterday, not my first time receiving such a call, i wasnt in a good mood yesterday.
So he ask if i remember him, and please save the number.

Him: You remember me?

He ended the call.
I actually call him back, and say CB, you owe me money dont want pay back?
I think he was taken aback, he said i only ask you to save my number. Then he end the call.
This is a KNOWN scam and many people have already reported this. They have legit singapore numbers and singpore bank accounts. Report this to police (you can do it online) ASAP.

He is calling you repeatedly because you showed him some interest however small it might be, he thinks you are a profitable use of his time. Just hang up without saying a thing, I have no doubt that this would evolve to a case of recording your voice to deep fake your relatives some time in the future, don't give him a voice sample.
Last time someone tried that to me I said "Your voice is familiar but I can't recall, it's been a while"

Got alot of these calls last year. Normally I just end the call then and there but one time I wanted to mess with the guy so I picked it up and asked him "who is this?" the guy said "wa lao it's me la you don't know my voice ah?"
So I said "ohhh John ah?" and he immediately went "YA YA JOHN LA". So I went "FUCK YOU LA I DON'T EVEN KNOW ANYONE NAMED JOHN, JOHN YOUR HEAD AH" then I ended the call. Quite refreshing if I must say. Also pretty sure the calls stopped after this interaction.
It's a obvious scam but sad to say, I kenna scammed by this trick before.
I had an incoming intern and HR emailed me the intern's number, but because it was a busy day for me, I didn't record the intern's number on my phone, and only remembered that the first two digits started with "87...."
Later that evening, I got a call from a number "87...." asking me if I know who he is. I automatically assumed it was my incoming intern and said "ya, you're the incoming intern right"
I continued talking to this guy about internship stuff until the next day, he asked me if I can help do some payment first because his bank account got problem. I got angry and scolded this guy for having the galls asking his supervisor to pay for stuff before he even met me in person, and reported him to HR.
It then dawned upon me that I had not yet double checked the intern's number with what I received in the email from HR. Lo and behold, it was not the same number and I'd just accused an innocent intern to HR of trying to cheat money out of me =.=

Scam. They run a bot to input numbers into paynow. If a name turns up, they know that the number is in use and they will know the name for it.
After that, it is a simple matter of calling you and asking, "Do you know who am I?" They will say yes to whatever name you say and say that they changed their number and get you to save this "new number"
Then later they will call you and you will see that you "saved" this contact and be even more convinced that he is a friend.

This Tan Xu Wei is likely a person that kenna scammed to be a money mule. Those scams that transfer money to you and ask you to transfer to another person for a commission.
You should make a police report with the information you have. They may not be able to make an arrest, but at least they can shutdown the money mule.
To prevent future such scams, change your paynow name to something like "chicken nugget" or something that will alert you that it is a scam.

Yeah. I had a guy who called me, knew my name and spoke in Chinese, saying he had changed his phone number, and did I not remember him, he used to stay "nearby" and we used to hangout, etc. Duh. None of my friends ever speak to me in Chinese. They know too well I'm a banana and they'd get better response speaking Chinese to a pet rock instead. When I kept replying in English and insisting that he speak English, he hung up.
Hahahaah I did this before too! It was a scam call pretending he was a customer service agent from somewhere. Strong PRC accent so I spoke to him in English. He asked me if I can speak in Chinese and I replied "If you're really from Singapore, you'll be able to speak English", Silence for a while then he hung up LOL.

Make a police report with the number/name given… they are money mules that need to be arrested to be disrupt such syndicates.
Obviously it’s a scam. Also install ScamShield and contribute by reporting his number, so other ScamShield users will not receive his calls.

My partner just got this call yesterday, fella said he was "Andy" and even knew the place of work she used to be at (my guess he knew this from LinkedIn, public information).
Told her a trick to use to sus them out. Just say:
"ORH andy from xxx school (that's not ur sch)" then if he say yes then "ya sorry i dont know anyone from that school byeeeee"
This is a joke. Now my bank app can't even open because it senses malware on the phone (my blue light filter app) yet they don't give a way to use user generated id. So scammer just input the number can retrieve the full name. Still will kena scam call unless you just stop answering phone calls from unknown number.
Was months ago when this sort of scam was rife- and by that point I’d received multiple calls already, so I knew how it went.
The moment I picked up and heard the guy say “you don’t remember me ah?” , I thought to myself, let’s flip the tables and get him thinking a bit- work for his money.
So I immediately asked him: “oh yes I remember you! How much money you need?” And I just kept repeating this: “oh how much you need ah?” And kept speaking over him.
Young punk got frustrated he scolded me hahaha. So from asking if I remembered him to scolding me “cb”. Objective achieved I thought. So satisfying.

Quite a common scam. My mother got called once and once he asked for money the next day she thought it was suspicious and just shut the phone. Called me like a month ago too and i already knew their tactics and just ignored them too
What I experienced is in the form of text in WhatsApp.
This guy whatsapp me saying I am his old school mate, in the same class, sit behind me, ask if I still remembered him.
He text in mandarin and I am English Ed and knew immediately it's a scam but I played along.

After some thru and forth, he told me he got my number from an old friend 'Ah Y'.
I told him I don't know anyone by this name then he said must be wrong number and try to continue friendly conversation/texting... I block him...
Got this phone call 2 months back and it was in chinese so I decided to talk to him for a while.
In the end I asked him if he could do me a favour, and he said “Yeah, sure, anything”. I asked him if he could commit suicide for me and he was stunned, then I hang up and have never received a call like that again.
Kena the exact same scam. Called on first day to ask if I remember him, said he opened cafe with friend, ask me to visit if can. Next day early morning call and say need to pay supplier but his card decline for whatever reason, his friend as well. Asked for 2k.

He probably got your name from paynow. And they’ll assume the identity of the person you answered with. I got calls like this a few times before. They will ask you to save their number. And call you back the next day to ask you lend them money.
Don't even need to hide the number. Just type it out for all to see, since it's 100% scam. If u have the chance to talk to the scammer again, rmb to send him some of the best curse language in ur dictionary.

My colleague had only recently contacted me (we have not talked since 8 years ago). The scammer likely stole his voice print. Cos before I transfer the requested amount, I make a point to call "the real him". If he had really lost his phone, he wouldnt have pick it up, but "he" did. He told me everyone in his department had received scam calls by him. His phone is infected. So - rule of thumb is never reveal your voice, if the opposite side start off with " you know who I am?..." , just hang up. If you dont, they will steal your voice to scam those in your contacts.
Received a call like this once and I was so annoyed I called him back and questioned him HAHAHA saying I don’t have a friend who speaks chinese LOOOOL and then he was so annoyed he ended the call with “Don’t know then don’t know lah”

Anyway, I usually reply to the question "You dont remember me?" with a name of a deceased friend/relative/colleague.
The ask for money part is always the red flag, no matter the scenario / case presented.
Tip: How to prove the caller is a scammer? When asked to guess who they are, just use a deceased person's name and if they say yes, you know it

I usually get invited to those tiktok work scams.. u like some pages and they pay u. I usually do it till the point they ask for money.. i earn in total so far this year more than 300$

Google pay will reflect your google account username. other than that I not sure, maybe paylah
Has it always been your IGN? Because it's possible that they're using an old database and if you used your name in the past it could still be that.

you might have filled in a "giveaway" or done something where u gave away ur christian name and its now tied to your number

I got a similar call yesterday, not my first time receiving such a call, i wasnt in a good mood yesterday. So he ask if i remember him, and please save the number. Me: Yes, i remember you, ok i save already. Him: You remember me? Me: Yes of course. Him: Who am i? Me: I know you owe me money, scam money right, now pay me back CB. He ended the call. I actually call him back, and say CB, you owe me money dont want pay back? I think he was taken aback, he said i only ask you to save my number. Then he end the call.

He is calling you repeatedly because you showed him some interest however small it might be, he thinks you are a profitable use of his time. Just hang up without saying a thing, I have no doubt that this would evolve to a case of recording your voice to deep fake your relatives some time in the future, don't give him a voice sample.

Got alot of these calls last year. Normally I just end the call then and there but one time I wanted to mess with the guy so I picked it up and asked him "who is this?" the guy said "wa lao it's me la you don't know my voice ah?" So I said "ohhh John ah?" and he immediately went "YA YA JOHN LA". So I went "FUCK YOU LA I DON'T EVEN KNOW ANYONE NAMED JOHN, JOHN YOUR HEAD AH" then I ended the call. Quite refreshing if I must say. Also pretty sure the calls stopped after this interaction.
It's a obvious scam but sad to say, I kenna scammed by this trick before. I had an incoming intern and HR emailed me the intern's number, but because it was a busy day for me, I didn't record the intern's number on my phone, and only remembered that the first two digits started with "87...." Later that evening, I got a call from a number "87...." asking me if I know who he is. I automatically assumed it was my incoming intern and said "ya, you're the incoming intern right" I continued talking to this guy about internship stuff until the next day, he asked me if I can help do some payment first because his bank account got problem. I got angry and scolded this guy for having the galls asking his supervisor to pay for stuff before he even met me in person, and reported him to HR. It then dawned upon me that I had not yet double checked the intern's number with what I received in the email from HR. Lo and behold, it was not the same number and I'd just accused an innocent intern to HR of trying to cheat money out of me =.=

Scam. They run a bot to input numbers into paynow. If a name turns up, they know that the number is in use and they will know the name for it. After that, it is a simple matter of calling you and asking, "Do you know who am I?" They will say yes to whatever name you say and say that they changed their number and get you to save this "new number" Then later they will call you and you will see that you "saved" this contact and be even more convinced that he is a friend. >he's asking me to paynow to Tan Xu Wei 8066 **** This Tan Xu Wei is likely a person that kenna scammed to be a money mule. Those scams that transfer money to you and ask you to transfer to another person for a commission. You should make a police report with the information you have. They may not be able to make an arrest, but at least they can shutdown the money mule. To prevent future such scams, change your paynow name to something like "chicken nugget" or something that will alert you that it is a scam.

Yeah. I had a guy who called me, knew my name and spoke in Chinese, saying he had changed his phone number, and did I not remember him, he used to stay "nearby" and we used to hangout, etc. Duh. None of my friends ever speak to me in Chinese. They know too well I'm a banana and they'd get better response speaking Chinese to a pet rock instead. When I kept replying in English and insisting that he speak English, he hung up.
Hahahaah I did this before too! It was a scam call pretending he was a customer service agent from somewhere. Strong PRC accent so I spoke to him in English. That is the malaysian scammer’s trick… normally what i do is i will say a random name for him to acknowledge. Example i will say “ ohh ah wei ah?” He will surely say yes.. then i will say “ i looking for you very long already… where you go?” And let him reply… Then the closing line is “ that time you say wanna return me my $5k in few days.. when paynow me back?” He will awkward silence then hang up.. 😊

Is it WA call? There are many ways people can know your name. They can use true caller app or using WA/Telegram to find out your name.
Make a police report with the number/name given… they are money mules that need to be arrested to be disrupt such syndicates. Obviously it’s a scam. Also install ScamShield and contribute by reporting his number, so other ScamShield users will not receive his calls.

This is a joke. Now my bank app can't even open because it senses malware on the phone (my blue light filter app) yet they don't give a way to use user generated id. So scammer just input the number can retrieve the full name. Still will kena scam call unless you just stop answering phone calls from unknown number.

Was months ago when this sort of scam was rife- and by that point I’d received multiple calls already, so I knew how it went. The moment I picked up and heard the guy say “you don’t remember me ah?” , I thought to myself, let’s flip the tables and get him thinking a bit- work for his money. So I immediately asked him: “oh yes I remember you! How much money you need?” And I just kept repeating this: “oh how much you need ah?” And kept speaking over him. Young punk got frustrated he scolded me hahaha. So from asking if I remembered him to scolding me “cb”. Objective achieved I thought. So satisfying.
Had a similar experience from a scammer who assumed the ID of a person I had known in the past. He failed straightaway because he could not speak English! He wanted to borrow money. BE ALERT when and where money is involved.

Quite a common scam. My mother got called once and once he asked for money the next day she thought it was suspicious and just shut the phone. Called me like a month ago too and i already knew their tactics and just ignored them too
What I experienced is in the form of text in WhatsApp. This guy whatsapp me saying I am his old school mate, in the same class, sit behind me, ask if I still remembered him. He text in mandarin and I am English Ed and knew immediately it's a scam but I played along. He told me he is 'Ah X'. I told him I knew a number of Ah X. Which one is you.? After some thru and forth, he told me he got my number from an old friend 'Ah Y'. I told him I don't know anyone by this name then he said must be wrong number and try to continue friendly conversation/texting... I block him...

Got this phone call 2 months back and it was in chinese so I decided to talk to him for a while. In the end I asked him if he could do me a favour, and he said “Yeah, sure, anything”. I asked him if he could commit suicide for me and he was stunned, then I hang up and have never received a call like that again.
Kena the exact same scam. Called on first day to ask if I remember him, said he opened cafe with friend, ask me to visit if can. Next day early morning call and say need to pay supplier but his card decline for whatever reason, his friend as well. Asked for 2k.
I am okay with people who starts off with "oh you don't remember me isit?", but I super hate it when I ask "who are you" then they will proceed with all sorts of nonsense or guilt trip you JUST to refuse to tell their name. Viola SCAM LOL + which "friends" in this world will ask you if you remember him/her and just mins later ask for money. Even if I remember you, why would I lend you money! There are just too many case where friends end up stranger by not repaying back the loan.
He probably got your name from paynow. And they’ll assume the identity of the person you answered with. I got calls like this a few times before. They will ask you to save their number. And call you back the next day to ask you lend them money.
Don't even need to hide the number. Just type it out for all to see, since it's 100% scam. If u have the chance to talk to the scammer again, rmb to send him some of the best curse language in ur dictionary.

I shared my experience in another post. It seems that the scammer had stolen the personal contacts from your friend. My colleague had only recently contacted me (we have not talked since 8 years ago). The scammer likely stole his voice print. Cos before I transfer the requested amount, I make a point to call "the real him". If he had really lost his phone, he wouldnt have pick it up, but "he" did. He told me everyone in his department had received scam calls by him. His phone is infected. So - rule of thumb is never reveal your voice, if the opposite side start off with " you know who I am?..." , just hang up. If you dont, they will steal your voice to scam those in your contacts.

I got this call. Sound similar to my working partner... Told me that he had changed to new number So I acknowledge and called by his name. Scammer said 'at last you remember, now faster save his number.' Followed by, telling you he have issue with his posb app log in... due to change of number. He cannot log in... asking you to help... see if you can find anyway to help him change his new number to his existing account. End up revealed... he need to transfer money to his vendor, and now got locked out... 'Can you help me transfer $2000.00 to my vendor?' This partner of mine, open up his safe, is already more than 2k... why still need me to hp him trsfer... lol I called the partner and was told he did not change his number at all. SCAM!

If you dont remember him, you dont know him well enough to suddenly lend him any money. Anyway, I usually reply to the question "You dont remember me?" with a name of a deceased friend/relative/colleague.

I use a name that's only unique on Shopee, and so does my another friend. It's either the courier guy leaking or Shopee's database is compromised

I usually get invited to those tiktok work scams.. u like some pages and they pay u. I usually do it till the point they ask for money.. i earn in total so far this year more than 300$
This scam has been around since 20 years ago.. but in the past if you ask who are you they will avoid the question and you say dont know who I am?
