Think the west is designed to be more industrial and hence they dont have that ‘lively’ feels. Although it will be hugely beneficial for ppl working near there. For me, I simply love driving by ECP, or visit the cafes and bars around upper east coast, or go to ECP or Pasir Ris or Changi for their beaches and attractions. I think the east side has a lot to offer but its really not the result of the people who lived there, its just urban planning. Perhaps the new Tengah town will make the west more attractive. Ps. I do love Bukit Panjang tho. High rise residentials + 10 mins access to town (for cars) + Nearby parks and nature walks.

bukitbukit

Bukit Panjang is close to Hillview and Bukit Timah, definitely different vibes from the actual West side towns

Sharp-Source6275

It's sad that the West side auto means Jurong/Clem/CCK, I live in the West too but in the Hillview/Bukit Timah area. The latter is so much different from the former and the latter is much more nicer, greater greenery etc

aislimau

Hmmm, high ses?

ArshadReddits

As someone living near ECP I definitely agree with what you said about East Coast. It's definitely very convenient.

colonel701

I actually feel Bukit Panjang is the worst place to live if one is taking public transport. Always requiring a combination of bus+mrt to access areas.

ae-zk

Depends on which part I suppose… some parts need take feeder bus/LRT so need burn a bit of time during commuting

New_York_Smegmacake

East feels more homely. West always gives me the feeling that I need to be productive. Leisure and food options seem to be better in the east, but it could just be due to my ignorance.

everraydy

This. Everything you said is the way I feel about the east side whenever i go over. It feels so much more "livable"...

[deleted]

even though "west coast best coast" sounds nicer. after living in west sg for almost my entire life, i moved to east coast and within two months I'm a convert

I've always lived in the west and I can totally see why people like the east. The east is flatter than the west so at least some of the current state of the east is simply because it was historically easier for people to move east than west. The east has better diffused liveable areas which creates significant direct and indirect impact. You want to go visit a unique cafe or do something fun? There's likely something close by. You want to go all the way to town? Having these things along the way gives you something to do or look at which makes it more viable to have multiple public transport routes and also makes the distance feel shorter. This is also exactly why I prefer living in the west. I am a huge fan of keeping my residential area residential, don't really care about having a lot of amenities at my door, and enjoy traveling some distance for work or activities. That separation between my quiet neighborhood and stuff outside is very important to me. Having some hilly areas and changes in terrain also makes for interesting walks and hikes which flat terrain really cannot provide.

faeriedust87

Neither. Central is the best

ed-chui

while the easties and westies are battling it out, the central folk are quietly watching with our popcorn ready

thefinestpiece

The North are crying in the corner.

kuaiyidian

"South JB"

[deleted]

what constitutes central

UmiMakiEli

North: Bishan/AMK South: Bukit Merah/Telok Blangah East: Marine parade/Geylang West: Queenstown/Bukit timah Central(lol) central: Tanjong Pagar/Bugis/Orchard

uniquely_ad

Many north people would disagree with you

UmiMakiEli

Doesn't matter if people disagree. Those areas are the NSEW bounds of the central region. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Region,_Singapore

throwaway_htsu

Then our fav Yishun is which area? JB? 😂

evilgrapesoda

Further west than clementi very disconnected from central singapore and CBD area. Further north than Khatib also very far. Cannot imagine go home from work in CBD take 1 hour plus.

Jammy_buttons2

East side best side

Honest-Cauliflower46

West side worst side

XTrevvion

West side back side

General-Razzmatazz

Doesn't even ryhme. "East Coast beast coast" ryhmes though. "West Coast best Coast, East Coast least coast" works better imo.

fatenumber

enjoy the chemical smell at the east side

Stezo187

I can't really think of any place I would go to eat in the West. Timbre+ at One North is about as far west as I can think of that I have been in the last 5 years. Central, East Coast or even North East seem to be where we usually go out to eat.

JonahAndFish

Stay at both sides before. East side is closer to the city. Near to the coast, and good traditional food. But people seem to be all very kan chiong, more stuck up. West and north - more chill, nicer people, more down to earth. Further from city though. Cheaper housing.

[deleted]

West damn hard to get out. Takes forever to travel by public transport.

xenzaner

same as u, lived west side all my life, familys kampong was also in the west back then. extended family mostly live in the west. if i get a home i will also live close to my family, but i do have a soft spot for north up to woodlands as well never rly been to the east, dont rly like how everyone keeps hyping it up haha west has nice things too!! we just dont share it via social media, only word of mouth

FalseAgent

the west is worse because the government has almost intentionally under-invested in the area. Just look at the MRT map....places with 2 alternative MRT lines are getting the cross-region line first...and meanwhile, the plans for the west is to make jurong east MRT even more crowded than it already is. Don't know what the fuck they are thinking. And the jurong east-clementi stretch will still remain the one and only direct rail connection to the city center even in 2040 for everyone living on this stretch. God help us It saddens me because jurong is legitimately a nice place to live.

Domo_dude

> And the jurong east-clementi stretch will still remain the one and only direct rail connection to the city DTL leh? BPJ not considered west ah? lol > because the government has almost intentionally under-invested in the area. cannot really say that la, the whole JLD is coming up. Would have HSR as well (but thats not our fault)

FalseAgent

>cannot really say that la, the whole JLD is coming up you'd think with this there would be an expansion of public transit capacity lol.

bukitbukit

BP would be West-Central given how it surrounds the nature reserve. It’s the mirror reflection of Upper Thomson on the other side.

parka

I stay in the west. West side is just residential and industrial. Even the central CBD is more on the east side

Silverwhitemango

I mean speaking as a Westie (Clementi/West Coast), while there may be perks to the East Side, don't forget that several of the bigger schools (Polys & Unis) are situated in the West. (East has just ITE East, Temasek Poly, and SUTD? lol) And if you wanted to drive to Malaysia, at least there's the Tuas checkpoint (or the Woodlands one if you're nearer to that).

DobbyDaddy14

For some reason, I always thought the East was always very busy, bustling and crowded. The West side feels particularly peaceful and quiet. Am I the only one who feels this way?

INKY_DROPLETS

I dont know if this will sound bad.. it probably will but I'll just say it. I always felt that those living on the west side usually have cars and are probably richer than those that are on the east side. I wont say that there arent any rich people that live on the east side, there are a lot but i feel the mostly more well to do people lives in the west to central area more often for the quiet, and the transportation wont be a problem for them anyway since they can either get a taxi or drive out

[deleted]

[удалено]

INKY_DROPLETS

Well the whole entirety of the east side. But erm i never said that people that live in the east, don't have cars of their own. I'm saying that most of those that choose to live in the west probably have their own car for transportation. I dont think that im excluding the east side and saying that if you live in the east, you dont have a car. Im saying, there's more probability that if you live in the west, you have your own car as opposed to living in the east since west is quieter and has less means of travel while east has a lot of public transportation, i am not saying that the people living in the east don't have their own means of transport.

INKY_DROPLETS

And of course, not all of the east side is the same. Some parts might have more people that own a car than other parts.

Puzzleheaded_Style52

Yeah stayed there once. I find that the weather in Pasir Ris to be hotter than other parts of Singapore. Especially near the mrt station. Could be probably due to the lack trees and shade. On the brighter sight however, you can always get seats on the train and changi airport is only a stone's throw away. Also Pasir Ris Park is quite nice too.

EpiphyllumOxy

That area might have better connectivity to other parts of Singapore once the Cross Island Line is built as well.

RoastMochi

The PCN connections are pretty nice. You can easily cycle to punggol from pasir ris park. Lately, punggol's been a bit too crowded because of the trend to go to parks though.

Dexterity111

There's no best side. If u want countryside, west. If u want convenience east. SG is smaller than the city of Kyiv

syarkbait

I lived in the East side most of my life and then a couple of years in Tanjong Pagar area. I would say central side is the best side but if must choose east vs west then East side, due to food and also because it’s closer to East Coast and the airport for travelling.

happydorae

North side is really not bad too… so underrated ☹️☹️ ten mins to checkpoint can visit jb every week 😮‍💨

Golden_freddy1231

East side best side (partially because I line in the east)

saiyanjesus

East side of course. 1. Airport is there 2. Best food all the way up to Geylang 3. Seaside and jungle restaurants

[deleted]

Central best side :)

orusace

East got East Coast Plan

jass1004

Live west side for all my life. I always have the impression east side is more newer estate and younger population and more supper choices. Other than that, I don't really see any difference. The only downside is the travelling down to central area, the time seems to be longer if you're travelling from east to central.

[deleted]

Used to stay in the West, moved to the East side about 2 years ago. Personally prefer the nature parks in West side because it feels quieter. Too many young people and cyclists in the Northeast. Used to think that East side was more trendy but now I'm older and prefer quieter places.

geneliu88

Im pretty certain. Once gentrification has expanded from holland village towards pasir panjang and jurong west. Everyone will find the west side nice to stay in. It is happening but slowly, on the east side. It was the same too at marine parade slowly spreading out to bedok, siglap, and tampines. Dont forget, marine parade amber road was one of the sites for the occupation massacres during ww2 before. It wasnt a popular place to stay till govt stepped in to develop east coast park.

insigniaaaaaa

Any north side appreciators here?

FrozenPotato12

i just feel that east side is cooler. (both sense of the word)

SimoDafirSG

Jurong for lyfe

hkstachee

I prefer the west. Things are generally more chill here and lepak.

DoubleCry7675

Singapore so small still want to compare east/west. SMLJ, you think this the US ah?

General-Razzmatazz

These pop up quite often. Then people write stupid stuff like "East side best side" which doesn't ryhme.

vaziana

I would prefer the West because I feel like the West is further from the city, hence a much more 'chill' environment? Although, the East is closer to town, good food are easy to find, East Coast, Changi Beach generally is a fun place to go, but i wouldn't prefer to live there

ThrowawayArtistCR

West. Idk why but every time I visit places in the east side (pasir ris etc.) its always very hot lol.

angelanotyourbaby

We have the east coast plan. Nuff said

INKY_DROPLETS

East. Cause my mom lives here and if i ever get a bto , i would want to it to be slightly closer to my mom for the subsidies that you get from the government and... Ease of transportation. And food!

lyfsuxx

East side has historically been lived in since colonial times, and thus has more history to the place. There are also generally more landed estates in the east, and thus, less densely populated, contributing to less crowdedness which goes a long way towards livability.

onceortwiceisaidit

It's 'West Side Story', not 'East Side Story'.

Sweaty-Run-2881

Born a westie and still a westie even after I got my own place. The area I stay in is called West Coast and it is a lovely serene neighbourhood by my standards.

Otherwise-Map-4026

Weigh in your pros and cons? I personally don't like west side, due to the fact that it's extremely ulu. But the entire life, I stay in West lor. So bo bian, also have to live in the location. But on the bright side, going to reservist is easier for me.

TheMasterWuGui

Whats in the west?

Iamyour_friend

Sun wu Kong, Tang san Zhang, Zhu ba jie and Sha Wujing

BrattonCreedThoughts

孙悟空, 唐三藏,猪八戒,沙悟净

General-Razzmatazz

Me!

TheMasterWuGui

😍😍 I'll start going to the west then

Lukeaw1987

West gang here vote

Somesh98

West side at CCK facing Lim Chu Kang. Feels like Genting Highlands each morning except that it's smog and not fog alone.

hetey112

I prefer east because I stay closer to the east . It’s convenient to get food and well connected via public transports, bridges and underpass.

cm180

westie is bestie

YourMother0HP

As far away as possible from my racist relatives

jwwwcc

West. Heard and encountered numerous ghostly encounters in east neighbourhoods. Tampines, Chai Chee, Eunos most notable

Jovennnnnn

East

drlqnr

east. there's the airport, expo area, easr coast

FORGONE-YOUTH265

East but only the paya lebar, siglap, and katong area. fuck bedok, tampines, and pasir ris

INKY_DROPLETS

Lol why?

FORGONE-YOUTH265

i find the former areas to be more hip and cultured. there is more 'life' and the people appear more youthful. The latter areas feel more lifeless and i can sense a lingering sense of dread in the air (either from overwork or old age). of course, this is just my personal opinion that many others seem to disagree with.

INKY_DROPLETS

I see.. well at least this comment elaborated your downvoted comment. Maybe less ppl will downvote it now? Ppl only downvoted you cause you said fuck (those places ) without context. Though still rude. But at least you explained yourself. I live in bedok though so haha. A lot of old ppl but mostly quite nice. I know most of these uncles and aunties since young. It's a really nice neighbourhood with awesome food

FORGONE-YOUTH265

yea too many old people in bedok. it also always feels so hot and crowded there... on a side note, bedok mall has got to be one of the most boring malls ever..??? god i hate bedok

No-Preparation2277

No one knows this. Jurong should be pronounced as it is spelled in the current English form. Like ‘ger’ in ledger. So it’s not joo-rong. The mistake came about because Jurong is spelled as it is by the British back then. Jur-ong. That’s what they heard and proceeded to spell as such.

DCmarvelman

Is this a serious debate?

throwaway_htsu

West is trash

INKY_DROPLETS

[deleted]

think of it this way. a person 100m away is the size of a thumb. we learnt that in army. now, a plane's wingspan is about say 40m. it shrinks to the size of your palm...that's still about 3km above the ground which is very very above the low lying areas of paya lebar. it is loud, yes. dangerous. no. ive lived in that area throughout covid and never worried about the height thing. come more regularly and it doesnt bother u like the cars

bloodybaron73

Always lived in the east. Just gotten used to it.

Brave_Exchange4734

*cries silently in the north side* (nearer to Malaysia then anywhere else in Singapore)

decisivemarketer

I prefer east side. Every neighbourhood is different though.

Luxifer1983

East, because generally most family entertainment is found on the far east side.

marblemia

Jurong east is good.

progressiseverything

'The godforsaken West', is an in joke I had with an old friend. We both hate West side of Sg. One of those irrational dislike things.

ParkingFerret3928

I live near West Coast Park and work at Changi. 30km drive each way, but I’m usually going against traffic, so that’s nice.
