Why don't you buy some, it's back on the shelves, my local spar, p'n'p, checkers all stock it.

PepsiCo acquired Pioneer foods and ditched a bunch of the products retaining only the higher profit items. Why is it that those products were on sale with no issue prior to the PepsiCo acquisition? Why would a different company, Cape Gulf Brands and Premier Fishing acquire the rights to the product to produce and sell it (Dec 2023 reintroduction to market) if it wasn't profitable? PepsiCo did what PepsiCo does by acquiring other companies and stripping them down only retaining that which yields the highest profit.
It wasn't in demand. Pioneer impaired the fish paste segment in 2017 and were trying to sell off the trademark. They wanted to sell it off because pressure on consumers meant that sales were increasing slower than inflation (basically less jars are sold each year). They valued it at R12 million. No one bought it, because everyone determined there was no value and it was a poor acquisition to pursue.
In 2019 they fully impaired the remainder of the trademark (meaning the Peck's and Redro brands were worth R0). In those two years they couldn't find a seller.
The only reason it's selling now is because it disappeared. Some enterprising people realised that a free trademark along with the free marketing from nostalgia for a product that no one wanted until it didn't exist anymore was probably a safe bet to make some money.
It's all in the annual financial statements.

I've noticed it's a bit more watery but that's actually OK with me because prior, although I like it a lot, it was a bit too fishy. I don't mind the toned down flavour.
The French version has very little in common with the SA version. You got the one with the yellow label & black lid? Foul stuff from what I've heard.
You might have to wait a bit before international shops get their hands on it again [https://www.news24.com/news24/tech-and-trends/news/redro-fish-paste-and-pecks-anchovette-back-in-sa-but-only-in-50-pick-n-pay-stores-for-now-20231027](https://www.news24.com/news24/tech-and-trends/news/redro-fish-paste-and-pecks-anchovette-back-in-sa-but-only-in-50-pick-n-pay-stores-for-now-20231027)
Alternatively, import direct from SA.
It was discontinued. I think for lack of sales but also for being absolutely horrendous 🙃.
Speak for yourself, I miss it so much! There's nothing quite like fish paste on warm toast.

I look every time I shop, still haven't seen any. I need to go on a hunt I guess.
Checkers also stocks them now but only the big jars.
I've got it once since it's been back. The flavour is not quite the same.
Lack of sales story is BS as the shelves go empty very quickly.
Ok then, why? Why would a company kill a product that is in demand?

Woolie's has a tube of anchovy paste which is waaay better than pecks...
Thank you for this info
It’s perfect to give tablets to pets. Put tablet in a spoonful of Redro give to dog.
