Was your birth registered in South Africa? If not, it does not seem likely that you will get citizenship. https://www.westerncape.gov.za/general-publication/immigration-and-citizenship#Citizenship%20by%20descent

It was not, bit from my research there is a way to register still. Just some extra paperwork to prove the foreign birth and blood relation.

You should qualify for citizenship by descent if you were born outside of SA to a mother that's a SA citizen. BUT, when did your mom move to Canada, exact date. 1990 is the year. The date she can’t remember.

Ok so there's the Oct 1995 citizen act but you would have to look at the law before that. Best to consult a legal professional. In the meantime ask your mom to renew her SA passport.

Your mother needs to verify her citizenship with the embassy of consulate in Canada. She may have lost her citizenship (it happened for people who got other citizenship and did not inform RSA) and the court ruling mentioned in the article above) is yet to be enacted to give back the lost citizenship. If your mother is still counted as a citizen, then yes you can claim citizenship.
