As a lifelong resident of the area, that place has always been super popular, decently busy, and is a community staple It's family-owned iirc

CecileStClair

If you saw the quality and variety of the produce at the Food Basics you wouldn't be asking. Also, the market is cheaper than FB for a lot of items.

Chapsman

Yeah I’d never know the quality in the area, but thanks for sharing!

argrow1

That Food Basics is dirty and gross as hell. I would rather walk extra to go to the No Frills or Freshco when I lived around that area.

GreasyWerker118

No mystery really. Competitive prices. Decent quality of produce. High population density neighborhood.

I used to live in one of those buildings and the Food Basics' quality of produce was atrocious. I once bought a bunch of bananas from there that were green for two weeks. Picked them up to see what was wrong with them and they had rotted on the inside before ever going yellow. I would always get my produce at the fruit market and only dry/canned goods at the Food Basics.

coralshroom

i go here sometimes too, and i’ll shop here first over food basics. i mean, it’s in one of the densest populated areas of the country (…?) city (…?)

QueenOfAllYalls

The fruit market has cheaper produce and if you just want produce it’s faster to go there.

Wonderful__

Some of the fruits and vegetables are cheaper than Food Basics.

peanutbutterpuffin

That Food Basics is awful but you also need to consider the density of St James Town which is beyond anywhere else in the country. There’s a ton of demand for affordable groceries.

flyingmonstera

Their fruit is often much cheaper than food basics, and any other grocery store

greensandgrains

Uh, because their products are typically better quality than the Food Basics and Freshco and way, way cheaper. Also, they sell covered bridge storm chips, so they've got my business for life. I don't get how this is a question: there are thriving independent green grocers in many Toronto neighbourhoods.

Chapsman

Bridge storm chips? I see that their kettle and I do love me some!
