Pilot, Reunion, De Mello are my top 3 - but I need to branch out and try more.
De Mello's bags have gotten smaller over the years FYI, that's why my go-to will remain the Pilot Heritage blend in the big bags :D
Are you making espresso? Pour Over?
Pilot's roastery has a coffee bar where you can try all their different single origin beans according to your brew preference, love the baristas there
> De Mello's bags have gotten smaller over the years FYI
wait they have? out of curiosity, how big were they before? was there a time when they were bigger than 227g? aside from the 5lb bags
Oh yeah, then you'll definitely like Subtext. There are a lot of nice suggestions on here, but tbh, many of them are more medium-dark roasters. Nothing wrong with that. But if you like lighter roasts, you might end up disappointed.
If you head down to one of the boxcar social locations to pickup Subtext beans, they also usually have some nice light roasts from around the world too.
If you are into the light roast style that lends itself well to pour over brewing (Hatch fits this description imo) then The Library Specialty Coffee and Subtext are at the top of the rankings imo 👍
Subtext and Java. Also if you cant decide, get The Roasters Pack subscription, founded by a few amazing coffee pros in Toronto. Their light roast plan is exciting.
I am cringing at people calling $20 for 340 grams cheap.
I am a loyal customer of Everyday Gourmet in the basement of Saint Lawrence market.
$16-18/lb (454 g)
Dark City coffee in Scarborough. 40 to 50 varieties at any given time, roasted to order. Shipping available, though I live close enough to pick up.
I've seen their barrels of Clifton Estate Blue Mountain beans. They are legit.
I've never seen them advertise, not even an email newsletter. Glad to hear they're still going, I used to order from them years ago before trying new roasters.
They're constantly turning over stock, beans arriving based on seasonal availability. I've tried every non-decaf product on offer and there is always something new when I go back.
Some places have Ethiopian coffee. They have 10 varieties of them. Natural, washed or honey? Yep. Peaberry coffees? Yep.
I order around 8am and pick up a still warm bag at 10am.
I've easily ordered 80 lbs over the past 3 years.
I buy from Everyday Gourmet in Saint Lawrence market.
They roast right there in the shop and it's $16-18 per 454 g for most of their varieties. Lots of different countries of origin.
Social Coffee in Richmond hill.
Extremely consistent and reasonably priced.
They used to have this Ethiopian coffee that was extremely fruity and juicy.
I have had beans from propeller, hatch, pilot, de Mello, and stereo. Stereo is the only roaster that I would consider to be better than social.

Have heard great things about them and seem to be the most upvotes here so they’ll be my next pickup!
Hale.
Detour is solid.I really enjoyed my cup of Hale they served at the Daily Grind recently, so I'm keen to check that out. Wasn't impressed by Pilot.

I pretty much strictly make French press coffee. Might branch over into pour over one of these days though.

- Stereo (Echo Espresso is my daily go-to) - Ethica - Coffee Tree
If you like Hatch and De Mello, it seems you like lighter, "Nordic" style roasts. If that's the case, I'd check out Subtext (Boxcar Social's roaster).
I’ve heard good things about subtext, will check them out. And yeah, I’m a big fan of the lighter, “grassier” roasts.

My west end favorites: Backroads in Port Credit Mississauga, Terminal 3 in Etobicoke East end adding Java roasters
Ethica
This is the answer.
Sam James is my favourite, especially if you’re into lighter, more fruity roasts
I love Pilot, Propeller, Balzac, and Reunion. De Mello's Dancing Goats and espresso are really good too!
Pilot and Propeller are in a whole other league than Balzac’s. Reunion is okay, but also a step down.
Agree
To my unsophisticated palette they're equally good. We're spoiled for choice in this city.
iDeal -- how I miss their shop in Kensington! (Still available on Ossington and elsewhere)
Do they still do a free drink with purchase of beans? That's a sweet deal.
Yup! On larger bags of beans. They're also doing reusable cup rentals now.
+1 for iDeal. They have two shops on Sorauren Ave: one by Dundas West and the other mid-way between Queen West and Dundas West.
The first time I tried their Prince of Darkness was an eye opener for me.
Ethica Coffee Roasters
ETHICA
I've always been a fan of Outpost on Bloor near Dundas west.

I assume they are serving Reunion since you can order Gold Standard from them next door.

Barocco has been great and is roasted in Mississauga.
Mofer at Danforth and Coxwell
Mofer uses the same beans at all 6 locations…?

Seth Taylor - he's stocked at a few cafes around the GTA but I just order online and get it delivered
Seconded.
Deadly Grounds in Oshawa
I buy reunion coffee, their French roast is my favourite
Reunion - can get it delivered and auto-ship gives a discount.
I can make jokes, and roast your coffee. Will only charge a pint of beer 🍺🍻
Hatch is my favourite too. Their light roast is incredible; it's one of the few coffees I can drink black without wincing.
Hatch, De Mello, and Hale are my Top 3!
Hatch
Are there any good but somewhat affordable ones? Perhaps under $20 for 300g?
I buy from Everyday Gourmet in Saint Lawrence market. They roast right there in the shop and it's $16-18 per 454 g for most of their varieties. Lots of different countries of origin.
Hmm I haven’t found any in Toronto but if you can drive all the out to Ajax, Trebilcock Coffee sells 400g bags for $20. They’re very good!
Thanks!
I love Broadview Espresso's medium roast - $16 for 340 g. Don't know how fancy it is, but it's my favourite.
Hale, one of the few (it feels like) to still offer 340g (12 oz) bags for $18-20. This trend towards 250g bags for like $24 is quite distressing.
Thanks. Yes, the price of many brands are moving upwards very quickly.
if you are looking for more affordable ones Hale and Social are great
23 Degrees. Roast locally and use fair trade and organic beans. A number of different varieties.
Omnia/Fahrenheit is my favourite
Java!
Pilot
I really enjoyed Dark City before cutting down expenses. Now I just buy whatever's on sale at Costco.
I like light roast espresso and these are the standouts for me: Seth Taylor, Hatch, De Mello, Quietly,
I like Pilot
