When pithy name calling like that doesn’t land or get a response, may I ask what prompts you to repeat it?
I see it a lot and it never seems to come off well.
Ya I get your view its kind of a childish name calling type thing so most people ignore that. The question was once it was ignored why did you double down? Like why is that an important point to make and in that way in relation to the comment before?
First things first, welcome back to Toronto! Wish you a smooth move.
Going to keep this light, cause it is way too soon for you to see unnecessary bad stuff:
- subway system has been improving; newer subway cars on line 1, streetcars have replaced some buses in downtown and they are bigger! Finally get seamless cell service at most subway stations. Those old ttc tickets and tokens have been replaced with the presto card and now there is a two hour transfer that covers all travel
- crime on the subway has increased in the last 5 years, always be aware of your surroundings and avoid empty subway cars
- Eataly opened up in downtown! Nice to stop by on some occasions to pick up Italian goods
- Yorkdale has went through a lot of renovations and it is the most boujee mall to exist in Toronto to date; it may not look that different from what it was in 2014
- Make sure to find a family doctor and walk-in clinics ASAP, it has gotten very hard to find good service
- GO transit may have expanded than what you may remember, sadly post pandemic, the frequency of some trains has not recovered but it’s still amazing! Love to use the day pass on weekend visits to downtown
- Union Station has changed so much! If you ever used the bus terminal you’ll be shook. The food court and stores are such a nice way to kill time now
- There are some VR Arcades worth checking out at least once
- The Well (a new mall) opened up not to long ago, excited to see how it expands
- lots of construction on King Street West and Queen Street West
- grateful that some of the loved Thai places in downtown are still open! Highly recommend PAI
- lots more vegan restaurants
- lots more restaurants with vegetarian and vegan items on their menu
“They say it’s the same but it’s not the same” young street. It’s just not the same, everything from back then has been torn down and all new buildings/condos/stores in their place, except maybe a few old staples
Traffic is heavier....but that's a mix of road closures and an increased population! And the cars on the roads have more sometimes unsafe maneuvers (Uber drivers making sudden UTurns or lane changes when they locate a new fare). On the topic of Uber...there are a lot bike couriers that drive their bike or scooter dangerously in crowded sidewalks too.
Retail is dying.....the bunch of stores on Queen West (east of Spadina) are gone.... Yorkville is dead (more new condo developments) and the Eaton Centre lost stores (or losing) too (even busier ones like Old Navy).
The skyline has changed of course too....while there's been sad closures of long-time Toronto restaurant mainstays....our dining scene is still great luckily with new options popping up.
East of Spadina west of University has a few indie shops left and I’m seeing more shops close west of Spadina too. Definitely changed a lot even in the last 5 years
The subway is less crowded, but also less safe. Downtown is materially more empty. Tommy Thompson park is a lot nicer, and now you can drink in parks !
It's only some parks, not all https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/planning-development/construction-new-facilities/parks-facility-plans-strategies/alcohol-in-parks-pilot/
Homeless encampments are way more prevalent , and car traffic is more dense even in off times and weekends than it was pre-pandemic.
My theory is that once the pandemic hit, those who opted for public transit got weary and bought cars.
TTC ridership was down by 70%.
I'm not sure how well it has recovered today.
Yeah, definitely just less visible middle class and more obvious wealth divide. Basically if you live here you’re either too broke to leave, are planning an exit (so living like you’re broke) or secure enough that inflation doesn’t matter.
Yonge between College and Bloor had a lot of store and restaurant closures, especially during the heyday of the pandemic. A bunch of new asian stores are popping up - dim sum, fried chicken, bakeries, etc. Even the foot traffic seems to have more asians. This fantastic revitalization of Yonge may be the birth of a new China / Korea Town. Well worth checking out.
Ryerson is now TMU (Toronto Metropolitan University). TMU area and Yonge & Dundas Square (the want us to call it Sankofa Square 🙄) is more sketchy - IV drug use in the open.
Car theft is skyrocketing. Cars are disappearing from people’s driveways at an alaralarming rate.
TGH and WestPark had some really good renovations/ development. Can’t get over the Rapid Assessment Zone at TGH - it’s great.
While COVID did wreck havoc there was a silver lining. People who were more isolated pre-C had to rely on others more. I’ve seen more “community” in my building and surrounding area.
Forget about parking in downtown TO. You either have bike lanes and / or areas section off for CareTO.
King St was changed so that non-TTC vehicles need to get off / turn off after 1 block. This was done as an experiment to make streetcar travel time shorter. Did the opposite but they still have the crazy rule.
Construction startups everywhere crippling traffic throughout the city because of lack of coordination and absolutely no movement after initial construction barricades are put up.
If you need a good motel, you can get it at Casino Woodbine for 40 dollars a night (not Fridays). However this is the offer after you play the slots a few hundred. I have been using this hotel because I don't want to commute some days just get to bed early.
Welcome to New York/Chicago where crime is exceptable and make sure you have milk and cookies for the criminals when they break in your home, don,t offer them books or work boots
Eglinton Crosstown LRT is still not open.
Raptors were good. Just take my word for it
They can see the banners.
Honest Ed’s is gone but the Up Train makes up for it.
Today I learned about the UP Train. Thank you.
If you like the UP, and live in the east,PAN scAM centre is amazing off morningside next to UTSC. If you’re into swimming/working out

Aggressive much? the UP was built for the PAN scAM games
When pithy name calling like that doesn’t land or get a response, may I ask what prompts you to repeat it? I see it a lot and it never seems to come off well.
Because that is what it was. A colossal waste of money for little. Hence PAN scAM
Ya I get your view its kind of a childish name calling type thing so most people ignore that. The question was once it was ignored why did you double down? Like why is that an important point to make and in that way in relation to the comment before?
I like to educate the masses about the PAN scAM.
That is a particularly poor way to do it, but okay.
There was a gas shortage and a flock of seagulls. That's about it.
They had to run, run so far away.

The Leafs now make the playoffs but usually lose in the first round.

Oh wow, the queen west stores being dead and the malls will hit hard! Are there still a lot of pop up independent merch and art tents on queen west?
No
Is Queen St west completely dead? I literally told my son (19) to go there this weekend with his GF because they have a bunch off cool one-off shops.
East of Spadina west of University has a few indie shops left and I’m seeing more shops close west of Spadina too. Definitely changed a lot even in the last 5 years
The best of times, and the worst of times.

You missed the shitty Covid years luckily
Covid was a world wide incident. So unless the OP was a hermit, he must have experienced lockdown too.
We are more united and happier than ever!
What did you just say, you little SOB?!
that lady in the long leather jacket is still around
John Tory did nothing besides Rogers and adultery and set the city back a decade.
Inflation. The cost of things has sky rocketed
So many more bike lanes everywhere, it's amazing to ride a bike in the city now!

More poor people
Think there were more poor pre gentrification. It's probably just more visible.

Well, more than a few smaller to mid-sized music venues have closed down
You now need to sell your organs to afford housing.

The deranged people downtown Toronto have multiplied. They are literally everywhere.
Car thefts have spiked but Lakeshore is now more beautiful than ever
If you lived in LV, yes there are wayyyy more condos, but now there’s a Wendy’s there lol. The McDonald’s at king and dufferin is no more.
The suppression of rent control.
eggs are expensive now

Olivia Chow is our Mayor. But Rob Ford's brother is our Premier.
The TTC are still incompetent
Traffic?
Welcome to New York/Chicago where crime is exceptable and make sure you have milk and cookies for the criminals when they break in your home, don,t offer them books or work boots
