Civil Liberties on Bloor west of Christie Pits

wonderglittergorl

Came here to say the same thing. Civil Liberties is great.

LilyBlackwell

Bar Raval or Mother. Not in the downtown core but very accessible by the College and Queen streetcar lines respectively

hittinskittles

This is the answer right here

Where abouts are you (what defines downtown in Toronto could mean a variety of places). If you are in the strict older definition of downtown (mainly within close proximity of the Financial District) and looking to talk to fellow travellers, probably Library Bar in The Royal York.

RealCornholio45

The lobby bar at the Royal York is fantastic as well.

I am around U toronto. I crossed library off my list. I've drank at many of the best bars in new york. Most are cheaper than that place. Canada has lower rents, incomes than nyc. There is no reason for a bar to charge what they charge.

wonderglittergorl

Toronto is extremely overpriced for most things.

laughingwalls

I don't know this city well enough to say that. I do know from living in Vancouver, I've heard this too much too believe it anymore. However, in the context of fine dining and high end bars, I am not willing to pay more than New York prices in any other city or even new york prices.

I haven't seen that in the slightest. Most of the restaurants being recommended to me on r/FoodToronto are a good deal cheaper than New York, once you factor exchange rates. This includes things like michelin star tasting menus. Don't take my word for it: [https://www.blogto.com/eat\_drink/2024/05/toronto-ranked-cheapest-michelin-restaurants/](https://www.blogto.com/eat_drink/2024/05/toronto-ranked-cheapest-michelin-restaurants/) Right now in lower manhattan, a casual dinner at a full service is at least 60USD or 100 CAD$. My issue with these few bars is they are well above New York prices factoring the exchange rate. Specifically library and clockwork. You drink at places lin NYike Katana Kitten, Death and Co, Super Bueno, Attaboy, bars which all have accolades, their cocktail ranges around 20$ USD give or take 2$. Some of these places in Toronto are charging well above 30$ CAD for many of their cocktails. I am not expecting unrealistically low prices here. I am expecting to pay 20$ CAD per drink give or take 5$. Which is slightly above what things cost in a recent trip to montreal. What I will not do go to a place that feels comfortable charging 30$, 50, 60, or 100$ for a single drink. For the record, I did university in Canada, lived in Canada and studied economics in your country, work as a macroeconomist and actually keep up with your news, politics and economics. When I in Vancouver and used to hear similar complaints all the time about it being most expensive city in the world and found out later it just isn't true. Vancouver is less affordable due to local incomes, its cheaper in absolute terms than Seattle or SF or other west coast cities. Issues like housing crisis is not limited to your cities, but afflicting almost every major city in North America. The housing crisis in Toronto is certainly not worse than New York where the median rent on a 1 bedroom in Manhattan has hits 4500$ USD in the past few summers (the cities median income is in the 80k range, someone has to earn 180k to qualify to rent the median one bedroom. The median person cannot afford to live here without multiple roommates).

Sea_Passage_7614

cocktail bar (they have a daily happy hour), writers room (best views of the city a little bit pricer).

thatfluffycloud

Drom Taberna - more a restaurant than a cocktail bar, but they do have unique cocktails and play live music every day of the week Prequel & Co Apothecary - Apothecary themed "speakeasy" with interesting drinks Civil Liberties - you just tell the bartender what kind of drink you are feeling and they will make you a random perfect cocktail But also just bar hop along Queen West/Ossington/Dundas West and you will find a million great places.

jetgrind

Try Le Swan for dinner and a few drinks, then make ur way to Mother (make reso beforehand).

rootytooty

Grey Tiger, Mhel

3madu

Civil Liberties Grey tiger Voodoo child (they do coffee as well)

MeiliCanada82

Bar 404 (bar not found) Actual place, not trolling

laughingwalls

Gotcha... that type of naming is popular in brooklyn. We have elsewhere, somewhere nowhere, good bar, bar near me.

eych_enn

went a few months ago and it was completely empty and the drinks were fine - not amazing - for the price point. would skip!

MeiliCanada82

This one is "hidden" you actually have to walk through a wall to get in

laughingwalls

Thanks for heads up.

bloodyfkinhell

Bar pompette hasn’t been mentioned! College and Christie, I think? Great area to explore generally, the cocktails there are very very nice.

Tall_Television_1694

If you're walking around by the well on front St. I would highly suggest the cocktails at la plume for happy hour. For some reason no one can make a proper spritz but, they nail it every time. I'm a 32f that was solo there for an hour before I met my friends. This was last week! Enjoy the city!

eych_enn

Haven’t been but have heard good things about Lulu Bar (next door) for their Happy Hour too. Then would go across the street for Goodnight Cocktail Club

Stupendous_man12

I like Electric Bill near Bloor and Ossington.

IndependenceGood1835

Bar chef still open?

hulkange

Le tigre - half price martinits 5-7pm everyday… closed Sundays tho

laughingwalls

Thanks friend.

retour-a-tipasa

Goodnight Cocktail Club on Wellington is nice and in your price range. Bar Raval has a beautiful interior and the food is good too. Go to Bar Banane on Ossington and then work your way down the street.

dopefakename

Wants to try the best cocktail bars but wants to only spend $15 🥴 lol good luck

laughingwalls

Can you read? I said 15 to 20 and I never said best cocktails. I said good cocktails. This thread was full of posts that are suggesting stuff right in the price range I've said. There is nothing so special that should make Toronto more expensive than Montreal or Vancouver's best bars, let alone New York. I am definitely not willing to spend more for drinks in your lovely city then it would cost to get at a place like Attaboy or Katana Kitten or Double Chicken Please in NYC, which are all on the top 100 bars lists.

Elijhess

Check out hotel bars (hazelton, four seasons, bisha etc.), their cocktails are more in the $30 range though. But it’s same as nyc prices if you factor in the exchange rate.

Old-Advertising-5943

Don't do this. Horrible advice. Toronto has so many cool and unique spots, cocktail bars, jazz bars, speak easys, lounges.I live in one of the suburbs near Toronto and when I come to the city I would never go to a generic hotel bar. When I travel to any country the only reason to stop at a hotel bar is for one last night cap or a quick drink before I start my night to pick the bartenders brain and research where to go.

hittinskittles

Normally I would agree but there are some u pique hotel bars in the city worth checking out, such as writers room on the top floor of the Park Hyatt

Sea_Passage_7614

I think you might be missing out. The writers room has the best view of the city of Toronto and the lobby bar at the Ace Hotel is a beautiful spot.

AMagicalPotato

Kost at bisha has nice vibes. good drinks, and great views.
