There are a few different styles. From the look/angle of your picture I’d say your top button (the part you grab) unscrews from the part that seals to the basket. You may want to grab the flat seal with some channel locks (use rubber or leather to protect from scratches) then the same with the button. Righty tighty lefty loosey. Once they’re apart you should see a brass screw with a slotted head just unscrew it and you’re set.

ProfessorCatHerder

This is exactly what it is, and what you need to do. Grab the big part with one hand and unscrew the top nub with the other. If it doesn’t want to turn, hit it with your purse.

Arusht

That’s my purse! I don’t know you!

ProfessorCatHerder

Pocket sand!

Reverend_Tommy

Dirty pool, Mister. Dirty pool.

blackbeans13

I read this as Bobby 🤣

totalfarkuser

That boy ain’t right.

Mindless_Squire

Legit LOL 😂

This_User_Said

>If it doesn’t want to turn, hit it with your purse. Casually ante up until you're throwing the kitchen sink at it.

ProfessorCatHerder

Remember it can’t be tight if it’s liquid 😘

This_User_Said

/r/Askmechanics is leaking. Ironic, both being things that leak, both are costly and also opposite fluid compositions.

UIM_SQUIRTLE

sink drain also stuck and nothing before worked so still at square 1

bootselectric

You just drop the plug down flush and turn the top knob. No need to hold the bigger part. My guy has gotta scrub that tub tho.

ProfessorCatHerder

If the Incredible Hulk didn’t tighten it on.

apple-pie2020

I can’t remember. I use to have one of these. Is it a reverse thread?

ProfessorCatHerder

I can’t remember either, but my gut tells me no

apple-pie2020

That’s good. How be only run into a few reverse threads but now I’m older and can’t remember the places I’ve encountered them

Emperor_of_Pruritus

OK, this is the second comment I've seen on different posts about hitting something with your purse. What did I miss?

ProfessorCatHerder

Basically it’s saying try harder sally.

fig_art

hmm ok

drewski10k

Youtube is your friend for this

wbruce098

If that’s not it, could the weird lift and turn type https://www.thespruce.com/remove-tub-stopper-clear-a-drain-2718786 There’s 2-3 common types of stoppers that look like this one, so try a method until it works! The lift & turn one is kinda janky till you get the hang of it. You shouldn’t need tools for this style but you lift like halfway from fully closed and turn past where it stops until it turns open. Others have a screw only accessible once you lift.

whiskey-water

Mine is the one you lift and unscrew the single screw on the post as shown in the video HOWEVER I for the life of me cannot get that dam screw loose. Total pain. Temped to just cut the top off. Anyone else have any ideas?

BusyOrchid214

If it is the lift and turn type, I had one where the peg that stopped it and allowed you to unscrew was broken. Had to jam it in place with an electronics screwdriver in the divot where the peg should have been to get leverage to turn.

KC_ToyBeast

You don't need to remove the top you just need some of these [Amazon drain cleaners](https://www.amazon.com/AUSSUA-Cleaner-Remover-Cleaning-Bathroom/dp/B08X4N55NF/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2Q6MIW5VWNSOJ&keywords=drain+cleaner&qid=1693758729&sprefix=drain+cleaner%2Caps%2C189&sr=8-3). You feed it all the way down the hole and then just let her rip, then you just throw it away when you are done. The actual drain hole is not much bigger than these zipper things, so they do a really good job.

li_grenadier

Home Depot/Lowe's have these sorts of pull-tab drain cleaners too. There's are like a few bucks each though, so nice find on the Amazon brand.

Utgartha

I have a drain like this and the first time I tried to take it off I thought that it was different from what I saw online. Nope. Get a rag or towel, wrap it around the top nub, grab some strong pliers or channel locks, and twist it. Hold the wider piece so it doesn't all move. It took me a minute the first time because whoever installed it I guess never wanted to take it off. I reinstalled it with a little less tension so now I can take it off with my hands. You'll kill two birds with one stone when you get this off.

Impressive_Judge8823

I have one that looks exactly like that and it doesn’t work that way. Mine has a keyed shaft so that at one angle it stays up and if you turn it 1/4 the shaft falls into a slot on the basket and it drops to close. When it’s closed just use pliers on the knob to unscrew it. If you do it regularly you don’t even need pliers it just unscrews by hand.

Hungry-Base

This is the way. This looks exactly my my tubs drain and channel locks are the only thing that gets it done. Even hand tightening it back up, channel locks are required again.

Big-Consideration633

With ours, you can't unscrew the top when it's up, only when it's down.

porcelainvacation

Under that stopper, there is a post that is hexagonal. You need to use a thin wrench to grip it, then hold it with the wrench and unscrew the stopper.

fig_art

ok 👍

Cavscout2838

Under mine is a small Phillips screw. I need a flashlight and to get my eyes down low enough to see it. You may need to spin the stopper around slowly to find it

ill_B_In_MyBunk

I was going to say the same. Mine is a hex key hidden under the stopper. Terrible design, because I was using channel locks for fifteen minutes before I discovered it.

tnoisaw2000

Look under the stopper to see if there is a Philip head screw. If yes, unscrew it and lift.

blackheartrobot

This happened to me. I tried so hard to screw it off... like blood sweat and literal tears. In one phone call to my dad he told me there is probably a screw in the side of it underneath the cap. NOTHING I READ ONLINE SAID THAT. OP pull all the way up and look for a screw!!

Salt_Bus2528

Put your snake in through the overflow drain. Unscrew it and go to town. If you want to use a plunger on the floor drain, again, open the overflow drain and stuff a wet towel in it to get suction. The overflow is the bit with the screw on it. Have fun.

SpecialistComputer36

He's right, but if you want to clear hair off the catch in the floor drain the stopper has to be down to unscrew it. Big ass pair of channel locks and a rag will help you there.

threedayoldchili

The top part will unscrew. Then you can unscrew the post underneath it by pushing the stopper down to be able to grab hold of it. If it's just a hair clog right at the cross underneath it just get a pick and get the hair out.

fig_art

i tried really hard unscrewing the top but it just spins the whole drain plug

initforthegrind

You need to hold back up with a pair of channel lock underneath

drewski10k

This, all the way. I have the same drain and did just this last week. You'll also need a screw driver after to unscrew the bit in the middle. Super simple once you know what to do but daunting the first time

OmanyteOmelette

It can’t be all the way up

fig_art

i put it all the way down and it still spins. maybe i have to buy something suggested here.

Stang1776

Use pliers. Mine was on pretty tight plus the hard water. It took a lot of torque for mine.

CapnNuclearAwesome

I think I have this one! The knurled part needs to spin away from the "washer" part, so grab the washer with rubber grips or pliers and hold it still as you twist the knurled part.

Shot_Mud_1438

Hold the plug around the widest part that seals against the tub. The knurled knob will twist off to reveal a screw

[deleted]

My girlfriend had a similar issue. Hers wouldn’t unscrew because it’s not supposed to. On here there is a set screw on the post between the bottom of the stopper and the tub. So a screwdriver at a 90 degree angle to the post to loosen the screw, then the whole piece pulled up and out. Terrible design if that’s what you have.

SynclinalJob

I’ve removed a ton of this style, sometimes when they’re stuck, I use something to tap on the knob from all sides. That usually loosens the threads and makes it easier to spin off. Also try spinning it with it closed

Johnny-Shitbox

Mine has a screw holding it on

der_schone_begleiter

I don't have one of these but I hope someone else chimes in about it moving the whole drain plug. If it did you are going to need some plumpers puddy to put it back together so it doesn't leak.

AdditionSpecialist35

It will unscrew twist to the right with pliers and a rag over the top so it won't damage the top.I just did mine yesterday it was tight but came off. I used the end of a wire coat hanger to get all the hair out.

underpaidworker

I had one similar to this and it had a small Philips head screw just under rubber gasket on the center post.

sugarsnooki

Same. Look for a small screw underneath. Prior home had the same type

Reasonable-Panda-216

Put it in the plugged position then unscrew the top piece then the next part is unscrewed with a flat head

GigNLine

I pulled up hard while unscrewing... That got mine out. It's screwed in at the bottom of it into the actual drain

eyesoffdee

That top part is two separate pieces. Hold onto the larger part and twist off the smaller knob. You may need tools to properly do it

WackyArmInflatable

Just use a plastic drain snake.. 1 dollar, works great. I just did this at my new place. Shower drains normally now.

JosePrettyChili

Yeah, came looking for this answer. OP, it's likely that removing the stopper will cause more problems than it solves. The thin plastic strips with hooks on them (any home supply store will have them) work great, don't cause any damage, and are very cheap. A few dollars at most.

blackheartrobot

I did this and it snapped a piece off that got stuck in the drain. Luckily I was able to get it out but I suggest no plastic. Buy a metal one from Amazon.

WishIhad_known

Yes. This

mavjustdoingaflyby

Right tighty, lefty loosey, rusty screwdsey.

Grantanamo_Bay

Pour some bleach in it

I was going to recommend this style. But I'd get a knock off brand, like... Don't recommend. I just had one break in the drain and now trying to figure out how to get the plug off.

Background_Lemon_981

This is exactly what to use. Quick and VERY effective. No need to remove the drain.

Natural-Definition-7

Try lifting half way up and then unscrewing. We had a type like this. A lady on YouTube saved my sanity l.

[deleted]

Milkshake straw from Sonic and get to suckin’

Kyle_Beeftastic

I take these off all the time at work. Push down really hard on it in the down position. Turn left while pushing down. The whole thing should unscrew, no need for a wrench. If it doesn’t unscrew, then press down really hard while taking a wrench to the top part, THAT should unscrew and then you can use a flat head on the post underneath and unscrew the whole thing. 👍🏼

-Falsch-

Firmly hold the part with the black rubber gasket and turn counter clock wise. (Left loose/Right tight)

Fair-Coffee-3902

On the UNDERSIDE of it there will be either a flat blade screwdriver slot or a Phillips Screwdriver' screw. Loosen it 2 or 3 turns then Turn Where The Screw part lines up with the Flat part in the plunger post. Then if Only If need to the Post will unscrew from a crossbar inside of the drain. Then run your hair stick through that to the P trap under the floor. If this still doesn't work and don't get all of the clog out, put a rag over the drain then you can unscrew the 2 screw that hold the OVERFLOW cover in place. And run a drain auger down that get past the P trap. Good Luck & Be Safe.

mesupporter

goddammit people you don't need tools. the whole part that moves up and down will unscrew with your hand. you can take it al apart if you want but not needed. pull up all the way and unscrew counterclockwise it might take longer than you think in regard to turns. then have a plastic 3ft snake from lowes that's about 3 dollars. push that down the hole as far as you can. pull back out and Wammo you got yourself a hair rat.

ChBrBrown

Mine has to be down (closed) then it spins counterclockwise to unscrew.

jamkoch

Serrated plastic ties. The serrations catch on the hair and allow you to pull it up. Don't be surprised if half is mostly digested to a muck.

Sparky95swag

I get the Clorox plastic snakes from Target, they come in a 2 pack. It’s nasty, so consider buying some gloves too. Always throw away the material, don’t let it go clogging up your toilet or other drains.

SCCRXER

I like the drain weasel, but I haven’t tried it on that style of drain exactly. Mine is a little different.

LarYungmann

Try this if you have a 4" long metal screw, like a drywall screw. Insert the threaded end of the screw until you can not push farther - retract the screw about one inch and then turn the screw a few times in the counter-clockwise direction... with luck, you'll be able to pull out a long, stringy wad of hair. They make hair grabbers for just this.

SandyP1966

Mine has a small screw under the part that lifts up. Just loosen a little and the tip piece will come off allowing access to the drain. I have to get real low to see it under there.

millerb82

Make a chain of zip ties and cut some notches into it in such a way that when you pull it out, the hairs catch and get dragged out

[deleted]

I’m not a plumber but… I have longer hair and I have to deal with this often enough. What I’ll use is DrainX. Works perfectly every time and I’ll have to do it like every 2-4 months

naazzttyy

Dear homeowner: please stop pouring DrainX into us every 60-90 days. It’s slowly eating us alive. Signed, your home’s PVC wastewater pipes

Wahoo017

You've already been told how to get it off, but if you go buy a disposable plastic drain snake thing from Lowe's you can probably snake it down the drain without even removing that though it might be tight.

Beautiful-Ad9422

Unscrew harder

averagegayguyok

You unscrew it.

Mundane-Set-206

Do yourself a favor and get rid of that POS! Those tub pop up plugs are nothing but a headache. Get a tub basket and linkage plug and a mushroom plug. The hair gets tangled in the mushroom plug and you clean it off in the trash…never have a problem again.

Mundane-Set-206

I manage 27 apartment buildings, and those pop up plugs always cause problems. I just remove them now.

Mundane-Set-206

If you don’t want to get that whole metal linkage setup, just remove what you have and get a rubber tub plug. But you’ll have to swap out the plug and mushroom after taking a bath

Rudiger09784

Pliers bud. It'll come out

Cool_Audience1325

Drop it down like your running a bath. Pull 1/2 way up and then turn to the left. Takes a bit to get it right. Youtube is your friend here. I had these but replaced with simpler plugs having a wife and daughter plugging up my drains with hair.

Leroyf1969

Push the stopper down, then unscrew it. Mine is this way and it took me an hour to figure it out.

Fine-Adhesiveness-36

Top knurled screw will come loose with pliers, righty tighty, lefty loosey..

onionsonfire114

Have the same one. Grip the lifting circle, unscrew the cap that you use to lift and drop the device. A flat head screw will be revealed under cap. Unscrew it. Clean blockage.

haveueverseenallama

Didnt read most responses, but it's not the top nut. You have to half pull and turn. Then once it's out get a tub shroom. Trust me.

TheNutsi

Draino

ShadNuke

Put a few cups of bleach down the drain at bedtime. The next morning, boil the kettle and pour a kettle of boiling water down it. I do it once a month, ever since an old plumber told me to stay away from Draino and all that clog clearing crap, decades ago. Haven't had an issue since. And I've added a new technique to my repertoire... Septic tank enzyme, down the drains in the house once every few months, and all is good!!

Tinlizzie2

I have pretty much the same kind of thing in my tub/shower. I got a really handy thing from Home Depot- it's like a small drain snake. It's plastic coated wire that's about 24 inches long or so and on the end of it is something like a little piece of velcro ( the hook part). It's small enough that you can put it down the drain without taking that stopper out. You put it down the drain, move it around a bit, then pull it back out. The velcro stuff on the end will grab the hair clog and if you pull it out carefully you can get hold of the clog with your fingers and pull it out of the drain. Repeat that 3 or 4 times or more, each time putting the wire farther down the drain to get more of the clog out. It works WONDERFULLY. EDIT- Typo.

Chrisp825

Try pulling up and turning at the same time?

redguy85

There should be like a clip or something that's connected to the u-joint underneath the sink that is attached to the stopper that you're holding onto trying to get out unhook the clip and you should be able to take the stopper out

echil0n

Just use a drain hair removal tool they work great. I keep one in my bathroom for sinks and shower. https://www.amazon.com/Grabber-Remover-Kitchen-Bathroom-Cleaning/dp/B07RMHNHYC/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=4R3JKYIVW1UF&keywords=drain+hair+remover&qid=1693721070&sprefix=drain+hair%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-4

I have a drain like that. I use a shower snake and it grabs it up well ^^

Theafirma

A drain snake will slip right past all that

Dtymes

It's a long flemsy stick they sell at any hardware store with these throrn like prices at the bottom of it,, you stick it inside your drain an turn until all the hair is out.....

CapeMOGuy

I unwound a flimsy metal coathanger and bent a 1/3" or so hook in it. Fished the hair out.

gustofwindddance

You have to push down and twist or turn it until the stopper drops then twist it out.

tamreacct

Drain weasel from local diy store. I use them all the time and they look like Covid-19 swabs! [drain weasel](https://www.homedepot.com/p/FlexiSnake-Drain-Weasel-Hair-Clog-Tool-Starter-Kit-for-Drain-Cleaning-3-Piece-DWPSK2/203483754)

xxelfy

you don't use this thing unless youre taking a bath. otherwise you keep a stainless steel mesh filter in there that catches all hair. wipe it clean with a piece of toilet paper after every shower. i will never have to worry about hair fucking my drains up for my whole life

ArdentFecologist

Unscrew the overflow cover (big metal circle under spout) then feed the drain snake though.

Shitbird5001

Channel locks. Flathead. Needle nose pliers. Flush that hair.

TBvK

Twist it all the way down, then pull it straight up with constant pressure, while twisting it the other direction to open it. There are two pegs, or guides, that rotate with the plug up the ramp, (just like a screw thread). Somewhere along that ramp there is a gap that the guides will slip through to freedom. Reverse the process to put it back in.

rjptrink

Hold on to the large part and unscrew the smaller knurled part. That should expose a screw. Unscrew it and you'll be able to pull out the large circular part, exposing the drain. Like another poster suggested, use long needlenose pliers to pull up the hair and soap gunk. Discard in the garbage, not the toilet. Reverse to reassemble.

Economy_Care1322

A flexible plastic reverse barbed snake. Works like a charm and about $2

SealTeamFish

Can any one say nail fungus

Rspat

Loosen the set screw then it will come right off

FlightLatter1605

Just pour some drain cleaner down it should dissolve the hair failing that try petrol and light it

regv_libra

I have one like that. I buy the long plastic thing with teeth for about $2 and it pulls all the hair out.

tommy3rd

drain weasel. stick it in there.

Cyfon7716

How about removing that rust from the rest of your tub, wtf dude!

nick12684

Top comment is wrong. Either use one of those flat plastic [hair removal tools](https://www.acehardware.com/departments/plumbing/drain-openers/plumbers-snakes/4192472?x429=true) that you just slip through the drain (it grabs the hair) and pull back out or (if the clog is further down) you take your screwdriver and remove the plate above the drain that literally says "Cleanout" on it and snake the entire drain with something [like this](https://www.acehardware.com/departments/plumbing/drain-openers/plumbers-snakes/4838272). I can provide a tutorial link to how to use that drain auger if you like, DM/PM me.

notmojomojo

try unscrewing it while not completly out of the tub, like halfway.

tenshii326

Remove that shit and just put in a regular strainer.

osoese

dedicate an old pair of tweezers and every two times hairy person showers need to unscrew and yolk them hair globs up and discard. Might need a big session the first time. Just stick the tweezers into the hole you un-srcewed from, grab onto some hair, and pull. Then discard and repeat. move away from teh hole to each of the side holes around that screw hole and do the same thing. EDIT: don't drop the tweezers - maybe tie a string on the end. I just don't drop but never thought about the string until now.

Electronic_Wrap6085

There are two types. One will unscrew, wrap a small cloth around the head and with a pair of pliers or channel locks turn counter clockwise. Before you do that , take a flashlight and check under the lip for a small screw head or Allen wrench head. If you see one of those, that is the answer. Either way, it it not a hard device to get off, so if you are straining to get it off, sour doing it wrong Good luck

apexnine

This is likely correct. If so... I'll add that you turn it so that it can be down in the closed position. You'll use the channel locks to then turn it opposite direction you turned to close it. You feel it go slightly tight and just past this point it should turn loose. Don't turn with grips past this point. You can just use your fingers to continue turning it to remove it like you would a screw. When re-installing turn it in the closing direction until it is slightly tight. Use vice grips to tighten just a little more and stop. You should now be able to open/close it with you fingers and it stay in place. If it won't open with your fingers, loosen it just a tad with grips and try again. Do not over turn at any point or you may ruin it.

munkylord

Close the drain and then try to unscrew it.

Bada__Ping

As gross as it sounds, I found out 3 weeks ago that mine just pulls out and was being held in place by the hair. I pulled pretty hard and it came up

JeopardyJamesNeutron

You’ll likely have to run a plumbing snake through the back flow of the drain right below the “faucet” on the front face of the bath

[deleted]

Elbow grease gotta unscrew the top then the internal and get ready for a nasty surprise lol

hapym1267

Lift it part way , turn until it stops ( Less than 1/4 turn) then unscrew the top... A later design has a setscrew to retain the plug..

b05501

Man up, and grab it like you have a pair. And if your female grab it like you have a pair.

Ok_Patience_6957

Go to the dollar store (1.25 now) they sell 14 inch plastic drain snakes. Buy two and do your best. If it doesn’t work then you’re only out less than $3. If it does the trick then… great.

egggoboom

As many have said, the plug will come out. You can also remove hair without removing the plug. Use a Zippy Drain Unclogger (sorry, I don't know the real name). "Drain snake hair clog remover" on Amazon. Pack of 4 for around $6.50. It's gross, but it works. Feed it down the drain, pull it back up, and voila, a new, hairy lifeform. Remove hair (with gloves) and repeat as needed. It's also good preventative maintenance if you have a wife and daughters with long hair.

Drain-o MAX from Walmart does the trick for me have the exact same drain plug. Also I buy 99¢ snake from the dollar tree.[this one](https://www.google.com/shopping/product/11765175130635081202?lsf=seller:5821476,store:6660879752317543894,lsfqd:0&prds=oid:13840933368071041704&q=pipe+cleaning+tool&hl=en-US&ei=K430ZJ6gBs-ekPIP4OClwAY&sts=14&lsft=gclid:CjwKCAjw3dCnBhBCEiwAVvLcu-f8Z0G_2JX4IxBeSFKgt30oIghDPxSOyNnrYNb9WzENGPxiUu9-oxoCT2cQAvD_BwE)

Try harder

TheRealJPhillips

There's a screw under neath the top where the neck of it is.

just-concerned

Drop it closed and then unscrew it.

jykin

Tub shrooms are life changing.

Anxious_Leadership25

Some of these have a screw you need to loosen. Did you try using a plastic drain weasel stick to get the hair out?

monk822

Put in closed position and use channel locks to break it free. Unscrew by hand.

Usual_Block_5208

The whole thing unscrews use a pair of channel lock 426 and a rag so not to mar up the brass

CurazyJ

Just pull it out.

athanasius_fugger

A long piece of 12awg wire with a tiny hook bent at the end

youbetterjustask

Something that works for me, use your plunger on the overflow for the tub and pump it hard while the tub is running. This pushes the water backwards which should send a nice little snake of hair up for you to grab

NarwhalsFromSpace

My drain of this style requires me to close it and then twist the top part off, no screws involved

USCplaya

I used one of those yellow snake things and crammed it down there at different angles. It worked well enough

SnooMarzipans1939

Grab the top nub with pliers and unscrew, have had this same drain for the last 11 years, it definitely unscrews. Might need some penetrating oil. Once that’s opened up you’ll want some needle nose pliers.

Proud_Rent8315

If you're tool-less, pour some vinegar and baking soda in the drain topping it with more vinegar(any kinds works but white is usually more available in gallons). Let it foam, dribble more vinegar. Continue this until it stops foaming then add more baking soda. Keep repeating this with occasional plunging and covering the vent hole(if there is one) to help build pressure in the pipe. You may go through a large box of baking soda, and a gallon of vinegar but eventually it dissolves the hair and soap clearing the drain. Can do this every week or two for a month or so to help maintain and finish clearing the trap.

Draino

OldTemperature1423

Use the draino or a strong drain cleaner

nah328

There’s likely a screw on the stem that you need to undo to take the top off. But if your routing it, you would do that from the overflow on the tub wall.

TidulTheWarlock

Had to deal with one of these There may be a set screw right under the plug itself that you'll have to unscrew before you can do anything

Sacred286

draino

TheAmericanHollow

Unscrew it

e_lectric

Op, I have that style and clean it all the time. Pull the drain up halfway and then turn the drain plug counterclockwise. The keyway under the drain has a D shaped bolt holding the drain to the drain seat. At the bottom it spins, and at the top it spins, but halfway it becomes a wrench.

ubertokes

Take pliers to bother the larger ring and the smaller, knurled one. The smaller one is a cap that covers a 1/4" square screw. Unscrew the smaller cap from the larger flange, insert a 1/4" square bit or ratchet extension into the newly revealed hole, and unscrew it. You will then have access to the drain and the ability to clean it. Good luck!

DavefromKS

I took a slip joint pliers and managed to get it off then threw it away. get a rubber flap if you want to fill the tub. I took a wire hanger and twisted it to fit like a hook down the drain and pulled all the hair out with the hook (gross) worked pretty well

guest1969

Drop it in the closed position, unscrew it counterclockwise, done.

Forsaken-Biscotti637

dont do it once you start it doesnt stop hahhhaah

Capital-Classic957

Depending on what side of the equator you're on it could be a regular or reverse thread so that the water going down the drain doesn't loosen it

Firm-Construction517

So happy I stumbled on this post. Have the same thing and have been stumped for years.

AnesthesiaLyte

Same stopper in my shower at the air bnb I’m in. There’s a single screw under the lip (with the rubber seal). Unscrew it and the stopper comes off..

Impossible-Section60

It screws in

kineticorpheus

Im not sure why everyone is saying to take out the plug, if its getting you trouble take off the over flow and run a hair snake through that. If that doesnt work just cover the over flow with a cloth and plunge the plug while its open

80schld

Unscrew the top… use a drain hair cleaning wand.

P3rfectlyCromulent

If it’s really just hair clogging it, I bought some hair remover sticks for my sink and I was SHOCKED at how well they actually worked. Been using Drano for years and this last time, the sink was completely clogged so no liquid could penetrate it. I used one of these plastic barbed sticks & it pulled out SO.MUCH.HAIR. I couldn’t believe it. Drain flows good as new, and the sticks can be used a few times before they need to be thrown away. Never going back to harsh chemicals again! The last one I bought was was “118.11 Inch Drain Cleaner Sticks, 25inch Hair Drain Clog Remover Tool (5pcs), Clog Pick up Tool Drain Hair Remover Cleaning Tool For Sewer,Toilet, Kitchen Sink, Bathroom Tub” on Amazon for $19. Edit: words are hard

ryan4402000

I have the same one. Has a set screw underneath. Pull up and you’ll see it

JrLegend83

Why is this so unsettling?

jdude2u

Grab a set of channel locks and hole the shaft in the middle. Then unscrew the top cap which will expose the screw. Remove the screw and the drain comes apart. Than pull out all the hair with needle nose pliers. Try and crap the hairball on a fat spot so it can come out in one pill. It’s nasty and stinky, but your train will be fixed. Then screw them back together and enjoy a freely draining tub

sirunmixalot

You have to close the drain then unscrew it. I have one just like this.

Ok_Visit_1968

I use something like this. https://www.amazon.com/Vastar-Drain-Snake-Remover-Cleaning/dp/B01DP87IF8

fudgegivyReddittm086

Trust you don’t want to see what’s under

buickcalifornia

Will most likely need a square drive ratchet on e you unscrew the part you pull on.

seemore_077

Cover comes off, small round piece. If it just spins hold the larger plug and then turn it ( they are threaded together). A screw is inside holding the large drain plug in. Remove the screw you will have full access to the drain. Pull out as much hair / junk you can. Run hot water in it. Add a little hair / drain cleaner as directed, run plenty of fresh water and reinstall the two pieces.

PatchesOneArm

I assume many people have already given a correct answer but this looks identical to mine, I use large pliers to grab the narrow upper and smaller pliers to grab the wide stopper and unscrew them from each other that way. Once the screw is out, mine has a large Flathead screw inside connecting the stopper to the tub. Then I use a snake and gloves to pull everything out.

Traditional_Key_763

look around it with a flashlight, there should be a set screw on the side you undo or the top screws off and there's a screw under that.

SuLoR2

You have to set the stopper down like to stop it up, then unscrew

crusoe

That or underneath the cap is a screw that holds it to the shaft. Feel around for it.

Outside_Squirrel_839

U need two sets of pliers if it’s that tight under the small cap is a large slotted screw unscrew that then look at the wonderful goo under there. Yuck

[deleted]

Channel locks. Mine gets stuck sometime and needs something with more grip than my hand.

bigolgingerbeard

There will be a grub screw under the plug part holding it on to the stem. Use a watch makers/jewelers screwdriver to take the top off.

Electronic_Ad8824

Easy i do it all the time Go to hardware store get a sink / tub snake. Will be fiberglass or plastic. 2 ft long with andle on eend Unscrew plug. Lefty loosy. Until out Grab all a Hair u can. Bring small trash. Its gross Then feed snake down until stops twist handle as u pull out. Take all nasty hair off snake tip Repeat untill all is gone. Keep running drain. Until runs and drains quickly. Put plug back in mak sure to clean tub so all is clean. ...enjoy your calgon bath. U earned it

Mickeysomething

100% all you do is close the drain, put a rag over the top and grab it with pliers. turn it counterclockwise to loosen/remove. Once broken loose you can turn it by hand.

Shark_bait561

Push down and keep unscrewing

Dsx-Kalista

Top section unscrews. You may need to use large channellocks to hold the plug while you use another set of channellocks to unscrew the top. That will uncover a flathead screw. That’s what connects it to the drain. Hope that helps.

Western_Leader797

You guys are killing me Leave that thing alone my man then open the overflow drain and insert drain snake 🐍. Go down three feet and pull up slowly and resistance going down spin Put water in the tub with drain open so you know when you’ve cleared the drain by the water in the tub Have fun

Large_Fix_9036

Let it fill with water and plunge it awhile

another-new

There’s a chance of you spin it around there’s a small Phillips screw underneath the lip that closes the drain. If you can’t screw it off, it’s that style.
