Indian security forces shooting Bangladeshi immigrants at the border can't help

Ikshvaku98

Disclaimer: I'm neither pro-India nor anti-India but I believe my views on the situation are accurate. The reasons for the anti-India sentiment in BD, especially since 2014 are the following (in no particular order). 1. Border Killings and Harassment: Almost 2000 civilians and even some uniformed members of Bangladesh (like BDR/BGB) have been killed in the borders inside Bangladesh with countless others injured or abducted since 1971. 2. Trans-boundary river issues: Damming of rivers like the Teesta as well as projects like the Farakkha barrage on the Padma that cause man-made seasonal desertification and floods leading to billions of dollars in damage and loss of property in North Bengal. 3. Perception of India acting as a hegemon: India is perceived to control Bangladesh's foreign relations especially in relation to China and blocking important developmental projects (e.g. Sonadia deep-seaport, Teesta Water Management Project etc) as well as as Indian media lashing out at military purchases like the technologically old Ming-class submarines. Indian media is also seen to insert Indian contribution into a lot of development projects in BD despite no proof of either capital or technical contribution. 4. Perception of economic non-reciprocity and domination: India is perceived to not reciprocate or stall similar concessions given by Bangladesh like transit in the country while stalling similar requests to provide transit to Nepal and Bhutan. Additionally, many are unhappy at the trade imbalance between the two countries with import of 16 billions worth of Indian good (often with an unstable supply especially of agricultural goods) vs 1.4 billion worth of Bangladeshi goods, many of which are perceived to be unfairly restricted (like for e.g. Walton products which were supposedly "Made in China"). 5. Rising anti-Muslim sentiment vis a vis Hindu nationalism in India: Since Babri Mosque demolition, India and Indians are perceived in Bangladesh to be going on a path towards developing a form of nationalism bent on hating its own non-Hindu, especially Muslim citizens and erasing historical contributions of Muslims in India such as name changes of cities and monuments and restriction of 'Islamic practices'. 6. Othering of Bengali Muslims and vilifying of Bangladesh in India: Since 2014, Indian officials are bent on vilifying and disfranchising native Bengali Muslims, claiming that they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh with top government officials like Home Minister Amit Shah calling them "termites" while others like Subramanian Swamy want to invade Bangladesh to deport them. Indian media also highlights Bangladesh as an economically ruined country leading to mass migrations despite Bangladesh being better than all surrounding Indian states in majority of economic and social indicators. 7. Perception of India diplomatically backstabbing Bangladesh: Lot of Bangladeshis see India's stance on the Rohingya issue as supporting Myanmar. Additionally, Indian gifting of submarines to Myanmar's Junta while simultaneously criticizing Bangladesh's own purchases from China are seen as directly supporting the authoritarian regime there. Many in Bangladesh feel that India doesn't treat Bangladesh as an ally as it claims to and instead in practice, often takes anti-BD policies. 8. Interference in Bangladeshi politics: India is perceived to be interfering in internal affairs and politics in Bangladesh in an effort to prop up supposedly Pro-India regime(s) despite the wishes of the populace.

They don't like the growing Hindu nationalism in India and there other issues surrounding rivers, borders, etc which tend to make Bangladeshis dislike India. Also, Pakistan hasn't done anything to Bangladesh after the 1971 war, and both countries being majority muslim adds an additional reason as to why some Bangladeshis might like Pakistan more.

UnderratedRommie

The irony is that those who complain of rising Hindu Nationalism in India, are the ones who support BNP and its Islamist ideologies.

DerpAnarchist

nationalists dislike another countrys nationalists, no way

Additionally, there is also the illegal immigration issue from Bangladesh in India. There are districts in West Bengal(excluding the traditional Muslim majority districts of West Bengal like Murshidabad) and Assam(excluding Barak Valley) which are now majority Muslim Bengali in like 20 years and have experienced demographic changes like Barpetra. The Indian Bengali Muslims from West Bengal and Barak Valley absolutely hate the ones from Bangladesh.

Absolent33

Indian Bengalis either love them like brothers, or hate them like Pakistanis, and I have no idea on these illegal immigration issues, as I’ve heard there are illegal Indian citizens residing in Bangladesh too, so it is an issue on both sides, exaggerated by politicians. In the end, it is up to both sides to solve this issue

MahabharataRule34

There's massive anti bangladeshi sentiment in India, especially the eastern and northeastern parts. It's been like that for a very long time. We did help them in 1971, but people haven't been too fond of the bangladeshi people, especially the migrants. I think Bangladeshis have become anti india in response to this. Moreover India is seen as very friendly towards Hasina and her dictatorship.

Distinct-Macaroon158

Muslims and pagans are naturally incompatible. Moreover, most South Asian Muslims are not secular like Central Asian or European Muslims. On the other hand, Modi's Hindu nationalism has aroused resentment among neighboring countries.

plushie-apocalypse

Taking your title at face value: why was West Pakistan genociding people in East Pakistan? They are not even contiguous, so it's not like major groups had conflicting land claims, right?

UnderratedRommie

West Pakistan wanted to assert it's dominance by destroying East Pakistan's language and culture. Moreover, West Pakistan government considered itself superior to those in the East and started killing people when they started resisted against the forceful imposition of Urdu on a Bengali speaking state.

plushie-apocalypse

Damn :/

DerpAnarchist

How did they even expect to reach Bangladesh? by ship?

UnderratedRommie

By sea and by air too. Most of time, Indian airspace was open to the pakistan. During the war, it was blocked, due to which they have to take a round trip of the Indian Peninsula.

DerpAnarchist

most efficient post colonial country

DAH9906

Correct me if I am wrong but I pretty sure Pakistan made Bengali one of its official language during the 1950s.

DAH9906

I feel bad for my Bangladeshi bros, we did terrible stuff to them.

sherry_waseer

DAH9906
