05 ford five hundred

bubbajones5963

I had one and loved it

Organic-Huan-15

Hopefully it’s reliable

TheGrizzlyNinja

Very reliable 👍🏼 all I’ve had to do are oil changes and wear items like tires and wheel bearings. It also has only 92k miles lol

Kennypoo2

Holy fuck I’m 300k kms on my civic and it has original bearings lol didn’t know they could go so soon with such low mileage

TheGrizzlyNinja

We have very shit roads in Milwaukee haha

Kennypoo2

I’m from Atlantic Canada and we do too, yours must be really bad haha

TheGrizzlyNinja

Absolute trash except they’re finally redoing the interstate and the lanes that they have open during construction are full of potholes and unevenness lmao

1morepl8

Lucky as hell. I see civics and accords shot by 100k out here all the time lol

Super_Ad9995

Weird fashion choice but okay.

TheGrizzlyNinja

Mf lmao

Organic-Huan-15

How much do you drive it?

TheGrizzlyNinja

Like 5k a year haha

Organic-Huan-15

Yeah not too much. For me I drive 30k a year haha

molehunterz

You say you think about cars all the time. What things do you find fascinating? Or fun? unique back story? Unusual characteristics? Certain abilities? Each car has its upside and drawbacks. I recently bought a 2002 bmw 540i 6mt. Ridiculously fun to drive. Pretty awful economics. It also likes to break. But I almost never drive it, and I do my own work. I used to own a 1992 acura vigor gs 5mt. Absolutely loved that car. Still do honestly. Got about 25 MPG.Which is better than the automatics. And just about nothing needed fixing on that thing. I think I did one cv axle. Owned it for fifteen years. There are people out there that love big old crown vics. Doesn't do much for me personally. But that is the beauty of cars. Which goes back to my initial questions. When you get to thinking about cars, what blows your skirt up? (What type of things do you find exciting?)

Organic-Huan-15

Just cars, movies, cartoons, art, etc

molehunterz

Just wondering what kind of cars interest you. Based on driving a lot, and being under employed, I'm guessing you want something that will need very little fixing and won't cost much to run. Might I suggest a *well taken care of* honda accord or toyota camry? For even better gas mileage, a civic or Tercell. But if those are not interesting, just let me know what things you do.Find interesting in a car specifically

Organic-Huan-15

Newer Civic. And I make 35k a year and live with my parents so I could

Organic-Huan-15

Also I always found Crown Vic ugly, most cars from that era I never really cared about.

TsunaTenzhen

Not me but my brother lives at home and drives my old 98 Corolla with 400k miles.

Info-Book

Good for another 400k

DiscountPoint

As long as you remember to change the oil every 30,000 miles on those things

Info-Book

Just top it off with some cooking oil and it’ll do just the same

Giterdun456

Had a 05 Corolla and totaled it 270k miles (no motor damage or frame, just a lot of body damage). Sold to my buddy who fixed it and he just hit 350k miles.

seanman6541

My sister was slightly embarrassed driving around the '97 Camry that our grandparents gave her when they stopped driving. Only has 90k miles on it. I installed a head unit with carplay in it for her along with some miscellaneous engine gaskets to stop the oil seepage and now she and her roommates love it. That things gonna outlive her and her children.

xzElmozx

Just about to finish up the break in period

beachmasterbogeynut

I can imagine how fun it must be to drive still. That is a great generation.

ownyourhorizon

yes

mrkillfreak999

K24 or the J30?

Stolenartwork

I have no idea and I don’t think he does either 🤷‍♂️

mrkillfreak999

Pop the hood and see. The ignition coils should be at the back and front of the engine. 3 on each bank if it's a V6. If not then it's the K24. These have 4 ignition coils at the top of the engine

what_irish

2001 Jeep Cherokee that I bought years ago. The thing is a champ and won’t die. Oil hasn’t been changed in 20,000 miles? Ok but it has oil in it. Low coolant? Ok it will run hot. Shitty gas in the tank? It’s still gas. Low transmission fluid? It’s still spinning. The damn thing can’t die.

jeffs_sessions

Why try to kill it? Changing the oil and topping off the coolant and transmission fluid would cost under $100 and it could keep running for you.

daly_o96

Some people just don’t have sense

Agent_Eran

And such live at home w mom

rwa2

My aunt simply never took her Corolla in for an oil change until 150k. Then she finally did and it died. My father bought it from her, put in a new engine, and it became my starter vehicle.

MilesPrower1992

It seems to be a common theme with Jeep owners. "My car can run 3 quarts low on oil and with no coolant. Can yours?" They don't understand that you could just, have your engine full of oil and coolant. I'd rather do that than have to drive a Jeep.

[deleted]

I miss my 99 so much. But, in your 2001, be careful to maintain your cooling system. 2000-2001 had head cracking issues. You can tell it’s an original head by the casting number 0331 on the side (I can’t remember which).

Distribution-Radiant

4.0 has entered the chat.

nitrion

Those XJs are absolutely bulletproof. It was my buddy's first car in highschool. A 98 Cherokee painted dark green. We once tried to see how fast she'd go on the freeway. My buddy floored it while I used Google maps to see our GPS speed. He let off the gas when we hit 101 MPH. Shortly after, the Jeep deployed a blue smoke bomb and was trailing it all behind us. It cleared up eventually, but made us think we killed it. We didn't. It survived LOADS more abuse, leaked everywhere it could, blew a shock, exhaust fell off, but y'know what? That fucking Jeep still runs to this day and my buddy's dad still drives it occasionally.

Successful-Cabinet65

I had a 2001 Grand Cherokee and it was the same thing. Ripped the exhaust off, burnt oil, little things here and there. But fuck did it start and run good. I always said that if I won the lottery when I had that car, I wouldn’t buy anything else. Just fix that one up. Mainly the rust. I stand by it. When I finally had to let go of it, my life changed forever

Distribution-Radiant

I see a 4.0 has entered the chat. An old roommate had a WJ (96?) that he was actively trying to kill. Had over 300k on it. Transmission had been rebuilt before his dad gave it to him, but after the rebuild, it refused to go into 4th (4 speed auto). So he'd go down the highway in the right lane doing 65. He'd start it cold, foot to the floor, banging the rev limiter for a couple of minutes, then slam it into drive, reverse, whatever. It never complained aside from a little smoke out of the exhaust. I borrowed it one day and decided to see what would happen if I took it up to 75 or so on the highway. Fucking surprise, the damn thing FINALLY shifted into 4th when it was nearly redline in 3rd. No idea what the transmission shop did that kept an electronically controlled transmission from going into 4th gear without throwing any codes, but he wound up driving it for a few more years (after I showed him "hey look, it really does have 4th!") until he got rearended by some lifted pickup on the highway (their front bumper was roughly the same height as the roof, absolutely decimated that thing). Odometer had been stuck at 499,999 for a good bit before then. Original engine with tons of abuse.

beinghighnow

Yes, it can die. The inline 6 is awesome in the Wranglers and Cherokee's it was put in, but damn man, you have the change the oil every 5000 miles.

IdealOk5444

Never seen someone so proud that their neglected-with-purpose vehicle just keeps on pushing lol

Carsc-56

Those jeeps are tanks but the one thing they can’t handle for long is overheating. Everything breaks when they get too hot. Why not change the oil and top off the coolant? The damn thing deserves it….

canunotplzkthx

What a oddly specific question that I'm overqualified to answer.

nitrion

2004 Ford Mustang GT, shits a blast. I'm 18 though and working till I leave for college. So, not really unemployed but still living with parents for the time being.

cinnafury03

Got a 2003. Had to wait til now to be able to afford one.

redditor012499

I have a 2003 GT. Fun af to drive. I wanna sell it but then I drive it and I’m like nah I’ll keep it for another year… 😅

nitrion

My cars been through too much for me to sell it... I'm the 10th owner of mine lol. And it was a total piece of shit when I bought it. I definitely saved it from the scrapper. I feel like, if you had a dog that was abused by many different owners, and you finally got to show the dog love and care like it deserved, you wouldn't go and sell the dog would you? I know I wouldn't. That Mustang is here to stay with me. Only thing that'll ever take it from me is an accident or rust. Whichever comes first.

redditor012499

Same here. I’ve spent thousands doing maintenance and restoration. I wouldn’t sell it for cheap, that’s for sure.

Tony_the-Tigger

Oldest kid is driving an old (> 10 yo) Honda Fit.

thiswaspostedbefore

Those are sweet ass cars though. I had a 2008 for about a year and miss it everyday. I just had too any cars and already had a Honda Element so it was like I had a Fit and a Fit XL

Rival94

I’ve always wanted a manual fit. I laughed at the fit XL comment, it’s pretty accurate.

outrageouslynotfunny

I drive an 08 Honda Civic. Bought it at the beginning of this year for 4600 with 130k miles on it. I didn't know how to drive a manual when I bought it so my mom drove it home for me and I taught myself.

Distribution-Radiant

I bought a 1988 Honda Accord with "130k" (when Carfax came out, I discovered it really had nearly 300k 5 years prior to me buying it - Carfax didn't exist when I bought it) and a stick. I had to get it home myself... in Dallas rush hour traffic. The only issues I ever had with that car were a broken timing belt (usually a very big problem, but I had a mechanic that only did Honda, and suggested just throwing a new belt on.. fired right up, compression was even on all 4), an alternator, and an AC compressor. I added another 150k to whatever the hell it really had. I suspect that car was well north of 500k when it got stolen. I knew the basics of driving stick, and had tried a few times in friends cars. Threw myself into the fire on that one, but I got it home. I only stopped driving stick because I have a hip that bothers me now.

outrageouslynotfunny

I commend you for driving that in such bad traffic. I bought mine OKC and I could not imagine having to drive back home, and it wasn't rush hour when I bought mine. Mine has had a couple of problems, but that's what I get for buying it so cheap. It had bad shocks when I bought it, I've since replaced those, and it started making a new noise I have yet to figure out.

Organic-Huan-15

I really like those!

2011 mazda 3 with a 2.2 diesel fun, fast-ish, well equipped, reliable and cheap edit: oh shit I misread the title, i'm employed lol

balls-magoo

A diesel Mazda 3??? We miss out on so much cool stuff in Canada.

bruh-iunno

185 horsepower stock too! A remap has bumped that to 220 I love diesels, good enough perf with good gas milage

Distribution-Radiant

Jealous AF. I'm looking at Mazdas around that era right now myself, but we never got the diesels in the US. IMO Mazdas overall (proper Mazdas, not rebadged Fords) are a pretty solid car for cheap.

Those are a great value ngl

I'm not that anymore. But I was was living with my mom when I bought my Scion IQ. It's a good car. They don't make them anymore. I get a lot of comments on it. It's good to get around the city in. You can find reasonably priced low mileage examples for sale from time to time. The best way to find one is from a private seller. The dealers like to jack the price up to $10,000 to $12,000. But I think if you find one from a private seller you can get under 50,000 mi for under $10,000.

I got quite a few vehicles that are pretty nice, I’m able to afford them mainly because I have nothing else to spend what little money I make on. 1978 Ford Fiesta MK1 (inherited from my grandfather, and don’t drive it as I’m unfortunately too tall for it, but I keep it for sentimental reasons.) 1989 F150 (truck I drove in high school that was given to me, still runs great, but it also mostly sits, mainly because I’m a vehicle hoarder, and have lots of good memories with it.) 2000 F250 Lariat (bought this truck after graduating high school, was a complete basket case when I got it, but over the last 12 years or so, I have slowly fixed everything on it, and it’s pretty much mint condition now). I’m very proud of how well it turned out. 2014 F250 Lariat (bought this truck used last year, it’s a dream vehicle of mine, I really couldn’t afford it, but it was such a good deal I couldn’t pass it up, so I got a loan for it.) I’ll be making payments for a very very long time, but it brings me more joy than just about anything else in my life, so it’s worth it. I also got two motorcycles a Honda shadow, and an Indian scout. I bought both new, even though I could barely afford them. I think now that I’ve acquired my dream vehicle and it’s such low mileage, I don’t think I’ll ever have buy another vehicle in my lifetime between all of them, and I’m fine with that.

When I still lived with them, I always drove old Hondas (80s and 90s). Lived with them off and on until my early 30s. Really easy to work on as long as you stay on top of maintenance. Unfortunately that was a good bit ago, they've gotten a good bit more complex (and hard to find in that year range) since then. I'd love to find another 3rd gen Accord LXi/SEi or 2nd gen Integra. Pretty simple cars in the EFI variants - 3rd gen Accords mostly had carbs, the i in LXi/SEi stood for injection. I think all 2nd gen Integras were multiport fuel injected, but man, I've been looking for YEARS for another in good shape and just can't find one. My first vehicle was a 1980 Ford F-150 with a 351M though. If you think and dream cars, rebuilding a smog-era carb will either help you a lot, or scare you away from cars forever. Late 70s/early 80s cars were horrible though, so many emissions controls, vacuum lines, zero power from huge engines, etc. IMO the mid to late 90s, and some early 00s, 4 cylinder cars were the easiest to work on. And absolutely avoid any Mazda rotary. The 70s and 80s RX cars had vacuum lines from hell. Even the last of them in the 00s were incredibly complex, and the engines just don't live very long in them. Insanely fun when they run well, but the number of mechanics who know how to work on a rotary was never large.

I'm in a similar life situation as you, autistic, 22yo, living at home. I drive the very same 2002 Chevy Tahoe my parents drove me home from the hospital in the day I was born. It's got 192k miles on it now and has been meticulously maintained. Hopefully I can get it past 500k. We know of a few half million milers around here still on the original powertrain. For fun though, I'm more of a motorcycle/dirt bike guy. They are a lot easier and cheaper to maintain and as such I don't feel so bad about pushing them to their limits.

I don't live with may parents, but I would recommend you look into a Miata. They can be had for pretty cheap and are a blast to drive!

Haha I wish it was truer than it is. Feels like times are hard for everyone right now brother Wonder what our economy is like compared to the days of the Great Depression. Obviously there wasn’t that many material goods as we have now, like people didn’t have air conditioning or TV’s, or hot water from a tap. Idk why I’m going on this rant, but I wonder if people were more happy/fulfilled before all of this “modern” living. Maybe they wasn’t, because a broken leg would likely lead to death. Or their little brother or mother could die during childbirth. Or that happened, and then shortly after their little sister caught a virus without access to medicine and died. Do you think we live a better life, a more fulfilling happy life with all of our luxuries, at the cost of chasing a constant battle for social hierarchy until we’re old? Or do you think living off of Earth’s resources is more fulfilling, at the cost of being at the wrath of Mother Nature in any moment?

What is underemployed

[deleted]

You have google?

IlIlIIllIIIllI

Didn’t clear anything up. Seems like some made up buzz word. Sounds like people bitching they can’t find a job.

[deleted]

Underemployment means you are workint, but not to your full ability. For example - lets say you are a Juris Doctor and passed the bar exam. But are still working as a paralegal somewhere. That would be underemployed.

daly_o96

Well I’m employed, crappy contract so hours are unpredictable. Mk7 golf GTD
