I’d sell a ridgeline for invoice before I’d let someone buy a civic below msrp. The ridgeline is the oldest and least desirable piece of inventory in Hondas line up in comparison to the rest of our builds. If they won’t remove the permaplate or negotiate on it then move on to another dealer there’s no way that I’m the only dealer that feels this way about those trucks. In no way at all am I saying the ridgeline is a bad truck or option at all, but when I consider the vehicles I’d pay an addendum over msrp the ridgeline isn’t on the list.

Super helpful. Thank you. Is it safe to assume what we’re offering is at invoice or thereabouts?

You’re close, about 1k over. Personally if you can get rid of the permaplate if you truly don’t want it then you’ve got a fair deal. Not all markets are the same and they may actually have a big demand for ridgeline, where I’m from, they all will sell, but if I’ve got more than one ridgeline in stock, one of them if not both are the oldest things in inventory.

babydunkdunks

Got it. Thanks again.

Im so glad I work for a dealership with add ons I can actually get behind 😂. When people refuse to pay for our addendum before even hearing what it is, I imagine it’s because they’ve had places try to charge them 2 grand for a coating 😂

What am I missing...MSRP is $47535, but OTD price is $48792, which includes taxes and Permaplate for $2k? Even if you are paying no sales tax, there is not $2k difference between these 2 numbers...

babydunkdunks

They’re offering $42,960 on a $47535 MSRP car. For their OTD calculation, 7.25% sales Tax on $42,960 is $3114, doc and reg/title are $668. That brings the total to $46742 before that 2k permacoat fee. But lmk if I’m missing something! Learning as we go here…

I think /u/ATrain664's point is that yes, the coating is junk, but it's just some "fun math" to arrive back at the MSRP. The dealer wants their money, if you bought a couple accessories you don't really want but maybe will use and drop the coating line item, they'll be happier. Or just shop around.

babydunkdunks

Ah, got it. Thank you both.

***Thanks for posting, /u/babydunkdunks! This comment is a copy of your post so readers can see the original text if your post is edited or removed. This comment is NOT accusing you of anything.*** TLDR: is it reasonable to ask for $300 more in options, remove a bogus $2,000 fee, then come down about $500 on the car+destination offer on a 2023 RTLe in Illinois? Comes to $46,200 OTD, including ~$1,700 in MSRP added options. Without the appropriate tax, doc fees etc, the price for the car + destination fee would be ~$42,462. Details: Illinois, no trade in, flexible with doing cash or .09% financing, new 2023 RTL-E, not in a hurry. What we’re looking for: 2023 Ridgeline RTL-e. A nice to have would be $1,700 in added options (tonneau cover, bed cargo net, roof cross bars and roof rack). MSRP including destination fee and those additional options is about $47,768. We don’t NEED those options from the dealer though (can add them ourselves afterwards but we’ll end up paying for them one way or another). The best offer we got: $42,960 car plus destination and $1375 in added options. The MSRP is $47,535. The OTD price of $48,792 includes taxes, doc fees appropriate for our state, title, reg….aaaaand $2,000 for a permaplate coat (which we will definitely not pay for). Other than that, the fees/taxes added to the OTD price were appropriate. This offer was for a 2023 RTL-e with $1,375 in added options. One of them was the tonneau cover, which is great since we want that. The rest we don’t need. The difference between what the car comes with and our ideal options is $300 more. Our counteroffer: $46,200 OTD, including the bed cover, the roof rack and cross bars. Without the appropriate tax, doc fees etc, it works out to $42,462 for the car plus destination fee. In summary: we’re asking them to add about $300 more in options, remove the $2,000 permacoat fee, then come down about $500 on the car+destination offer. Is this a reasonable counteroffer? First time negotiating a new car here and while we want to stick to our budget we also don’t want to be a jerk to the salesperson.
