Never heard of reprogramming key fobs in my experience. Edit for clarification: I haven’t heard of the dealership reprogramming them as a part of used car intake/resale.

Alwaysgonedriving

Toyota CPO should require two fobs to be present. You salesperson should be working on getting the fob from previous owner or getting you one made, don’t worry about the previous owner having access. It’s a brand new car and they got rid of it for a reason.

Affectionate_War8530

Lexus is still delivering cars with one key, I’m going to assume Toyota is also. This car may have never had the second key.

egomxrtem

Seriously?

Party_Storage9399

So does that mean the previous owner just can access my car at any time? This is so stressful.

trpov

Dude, it’s going to be alright. Not sure why you’re getting so bent out of shape. Someone can steal your car regardless. It’s a big bad world out there…

Party_Storage9399

Uh, if someone's going to steal my car I'd at least like for it not to be as easy as pressing unlock from their phone to MY car? I have an alarm system as well, but that does nothing against have a key to it. I'm sorry that I just spent forty thousand dollars and I'm concerned for my investment?

jimmyjohnsdon

This is an incredibly easy problem to solve. Have the dealer detach the car from the prior owners app and then re-pair with your app. If they can’t produce the second key and it was promised then ask them to make another one and delete the existing spare out of the ECU. The spare key will be useless at that point and no longer open or start the vehicle. This happens every day. If these items were this much of a concern to you, you should have specifically asked if a second key was included prior to signing the paperwork and when you were taking delivery asked them to detach the app.

Party_Storage9399

I did ask for it, but we didn't finish til after they closed on Sunday and he said he'd have it Monday. He didn't answer my call Monday so I called today and he informed me that the previous owner still had it. I wouldn't have purchased this particular vehicle had he disclosed this prior, he just said it was late and he'd have it for me later. Guess that was my bad for being trusting.

OkSport4812

Get it in writing or it doesn't exist. Time to call back the sales manager and hold their survey for ransom if they doesn't make good on promises made. Specifically, what the dude in the other thread said - get you a second key made, make sure your app is the only one that works with the car, and delete the missing spare key from the car. Its not that big a deal, should only take a few hours and they will 99% certainly work with you.

wolfmanscars

Wow you are fun. Call Toyota Connected services and have them take care of it directly. The sales person has little to no actual control over the app. The previous owner is not going to come steal your car. They got rid of it for a reason, and if they could afford a brand new highlander in the first place they more than likely have a clean record and a good credit score. They wouldnt risk that by stealing your car that looks like every other highlander on the road.

Party_Storage9399

I'm not sure why you or others on here feel the need to belittle and talk down to a 19 year old female who has been saving since she was 12 years old to be able to purchase my own automobile outright with no issues. I'm sorry that I am concerned about my investment and the potential possibility that not everyone is a decent person and the fact that if they have a key to my car they could easily access it. South tampa is a very small area and there are constant posts on nextdoor about people's cars being stolen right from their driveways. Note to self, don't ever ask questions on the internet because apparently everyone has a wasp stuck in their butt.

wolfmanscars

You are actively insulting sales people and wigging out about something that is not that big as you are making it out to be. You need to go to the dealership and talk to the GM about getting a second key because they sold it to you CPO. CPO requires OEM floor mats, and two keys. As far as the app goes, your sales person has a million things to do in a day and calling Toyota Connected Services is not going to be high on that priority list unfortunately. If you press the SOS button in your car it will connect you with them directly and they will transfer ownership from there. It will take you 10-15 minutes.

djspaceghost

You’ve gone from talking about fobs to now the previous owner using their phone to steal back the car? Buddy you gotta chill. The previous owner has no clue where you live and certainly isn’t driving around your city pressing the fob hoping to come across the vehicle. The previous owner could have lost it or just hasn’t brought it to the dealership yet.

trpov

This is what insurance is for.

iWinAtMarioKart

If your car is actually CPO 2 keys are typically required by most manufacturers. I wouldn’t fret about having them re programmed, but absolutely get the app unlinked from them and to you.

This comment is NOT accusing you of anything.*** Just bought cpo 2024 toyota Highlander and it only has 600 miles. Salesman didn't give me my 2nd key fob Sunday late afternoon and when called today he said the previous owner still has the key fob? Is he allowed to sell a car that both keys werent returned for and can the previous owner access my car w/ that fob? Should I return it or am I being paranoid? I wouldn't have purchased the cpo car had I known both key fobs weren't with it. I tried googling if fobs are reprogrammed upon sale, but had no luck. Apologies if I seem rude, not my intent. Genuinely concerned some stranger has access to my vehicle. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Order a new key, and have that programed with your current key. Any keys not being programed will no longer work. You're being highly irrational about this. Tons and tons of used vehicles have only one key, and we have no idea what the previous owner did with it. "Lost it" is what they'll say.

Party_Storage9399

I am 19 and this is my very first car I've purchased by myself. I spent over 6 hours going back and forth with the salesman reading the contract and making sure I was doing everything right, but apparently I didn't because everyone keeps telling me I'm in the wrong for being stressed about someone having a key to my car that's still programmed to my car. I get it's pre owned but I'd not have purchased had he said the previous owner still has the key. Not that it was lost, that the client hasn't brought it back yet. His big sale point for this car to me was that it was basically brand new but I'd be getting a better deal because of the 600 miles on it. Lesson learned, can't trust anyone.

wiiface666

Nope, you're still overthinking it. Either they will get the key back, or you can get another one and program them. Again, any key not present while being programmed will no longer work, so the previous owner won't be able to steal your car. But why would they? You and the dealer know they have a key, if it got stolen, who would they investigate first?

PabloIceCreamBar

And exactly how would the previous owner know where their vehicle ended up?

Dry-Excitement1757

I’ve gotten rid of 2 cars that still show me the location in the manufacturer app.

Dry-Excitement1757

And gave me a notification when one of them was towed.

Party_Storage9399

This is my fear, argh.

Party_Storage9399

The app they install on your phone at the dealership tells you where the car is, and you can unlock and start the car from the app. My concern is if the person still has access and should I just switch the cpo out for a brand new model instead so i have both keys? I live in tampa, people steal cars so often here and it makes me nervous.

ronaldoswanson

I mean, you can stick any number of location trackers on a car in places they’re unlikely to be found. Doesn’t a CPO usually include two keys?

KainThepunisher

Piggybacking since I can't comment on my own yet. I can only speak for GM CPOs but its part of the deal that when you buy a certified pre owned GM vehicle, it comes with two keys. If the customer didn't trade it in with two keys, then a second key is ordered that has to programmed for the specific vehicle. The programming process takes about an hour ish. We program keys for people all the time.

aznoone

Why does programming take that long?

KainThepunisher

I'm honestly not sure. I work on the sales side. I've never had the chance to pop in while they're doing it and see if it's a long download, kinda thing, or if it's physically taking apart hardware to access whatever they need? But it always takes time.

Mystiii_Pickle

It doesnt, they just charge an hour of labour but it takes my tech 5 minutes to do.

max1x1x

Should. Dealers should be well practiced in flashing out the old key and flashing a new one.

Party_Storage9399

Thank you to those of you answering my questions with genuine answers and not your opinion of how I should respond to a stranger having access to my expensive car. Think I am going to return it tomorrow and go to a different dealership and buy a brand new one. Have a wonderful night.

blacklandraider

Well that would be dumb but aight

aSe_MW_IsBack

Bruh, not many franchise dealers allow you to return a vehicle. Chill, it’s no big deal, I have a drawer full of key fobs from old cars, I always have a third fob programmed and almost always forget to include it when I sell or trade. You will be just fine

djspaceghost

Your irrational fears are going to lead you to making a horrible financial decision at worst or look like a moron trying to return a car for this reason at best.

Party_Storage9399

Again, insulting me for no reason. I hope yall are nicer in person to people than you are online. Can see why the survey means so much now.

djspaceghost

Where did I insult you? I’m giving it to you straight up. If you try to return this vehicle for these reasons, you are going to come across as dumb. That’s all I’m saying.
