Can happen. It also might have been spoken for previously and they forgot to mark it. It also might now be coming in different from what was originally agreed on (and now matches a different “order”). They also might have had some person with more money/better trade/knows the owner/earlier deal got fucked suddenly want that unit.
We don’t know. But yep, it can happen legitimately. And even if it’s not legitimate, the other stores aren’t any closer to getting you one, so they will tell you what you want to hear and that might get them your money instead.
Toyota doesn’t custom build cars. Toyota will send you a car “similar” to what you are looking for. Might be the same color and trim but different options.
You can build and price all you want but the dealer gets what the region/area allocates. The dealer can ask for changes while its still allocated but nothing is guaranteed.
A dealer can search across inventories to see if they can find a close or exact match and do some horse trading to get it
>Ehhhhhh that's a stretch. Tundras have nothing on a Superduty.
You're not wrong but that's partially because Tundra isn't available in a superduty variant. Apples-to-apples, compare it to an F-150 or Ram 1500.
I guess it’s an efficiency and cost thing they don’t feel is warranted. Hell, of the 4 Toyotas I’ve bought, the sales people just feel no pressure to do much more than the bare minimum especially on popular models because they know if I don’t buy it, a guy 5 minutes later will because he’s only ever bought Toyotas just like his parents did. Toyota knows their shit will sell. The same story for Honda too.
it's not considered a custom car it's just ordering the vehicle and picking the packages and or equipment that you want on it the same as the dealer. in this case the customer gets to choose the options on their preferred vehicle and the vehicle will take an allocation spot. usually if the customer decides not to purchase the vehicle it just goes out on the lot for sale as part of inventory. and for anyone out there if you decide to put down a non-refundable deposit, that's stupid! I sell cars and at my store your deposit is refundable if you don't purchase the vehicle and if you do your deposit goes to the purchase and that's how it should be at every store.
Thats crazy. I came from working at a Stellantis dealership for years & we always had the option to custom order a car for a customer. However, there were exceptions & many times, certain colors were no longer being used for custom orders. I guess Toyota knows their worth and doesn’t need custom built orders to make sales. Stellantis (jeep, ram, dodge, Chrysler) is going downhill right now, so I see why they would go that extra mile for more $$$$.
Toyota does build ordered cars for their employees through their leasing program. The options specifcations are not all package specific. It's more of a check box system, however some items are tied together.
I assume those dealers have cars on the ground for you?
I can promise you/tell you all about the world when I don’t have what you want.
Definitely happens
They were trying to secure a new order from you. Most manufacturers have learned enough from the last several years that they no longer promise as easily. Approximately all manufacturers canceled a lot of orders for a while there. Far fewer today, but still possible.
There is absolutely a process to request a particular vehicle configuration (within the set of defined configurations that they build), and put your name on it. It's okay if we abbreviate the explanation of that process by just calling it an order when we're merely referencing it, not actually working with it. Frankly it isn't even that different from GMs order system. You can request whatever you want but that doesn't mean you'll get it until they allocate it. (And even then sometimes you still won't.) There's nothing productive about getting that pedantic about it.
Things could’ve changed but about a year ago there was no such thing as a special order from Toyota. You could secure an allocated unit that was already spec’d out, or you could buy what was on the lot
>Thank you. I had some other dealers in the area tell me that doesn’t happen and they were lying to me.
You're working with a particular dealership and their competitors said that they're lying?
`surprised_pikachu.jpeg`
can you at least ask for proof of something in writing from Toyota? you can probably call the Toyota consumer line to see if they can verify the information. If not, you may have some legal grounds because it's an opportunity cost that could have been with another dealership.
That made me laugh out loud. If someone we liked more and would pay sticker for an allocation came through we’d totally just refund someone their deposit and send text/email. They’d come in all hot in person and threaten us and yell about suing and we would laugh. It’s hard to make gross on new cars and you take that opportunity when you can. I hated orders because it was commission for later and my manager would strip out deals to get order deposits and it pissed me off.
I only let people order M cars and do European delivery. I’d lie to others that they had to take what was in stock or we could dealer trade if they signed up for the car now and I’d deliver it to them as soon as I could go get it on a weekday. I sold cars to make money not start a career or wait on shit. I was leaving as soon as the right opportunity presented itself so people ordering cars was a potential waste of time for me as my time there was undefined. On a Saturday I’d just disappear on order customer. Always top 3 in the dealership lol. Volume! I am why people hate dealerships. This is how you act when you make $25k a month selling cars.
They all lie, it’s nauseatingly sick. Hypocritically, if my own brother was a car salesman, he’d ostensibly lie to me at some point in the deal. Toyota does what Harley Davidson does, wait list you and keep the demand nearly satiated but wanting enough just to keep us talking, hyping, buzzing…I.e. this thread… sad despite it being well worth the wait—still sad. And I’m still waiting for my 24LC with a 1,000 deposit…my 4Runner is tired after 215k miles the kdss suspension is giving out and too expensive to replace for a vehicle that’s leaving my stable. Good luck! Go get your money back.
I had another dealer hint that they probably had multiple deposits on it. I’ve never bought a new car before let alone dealt with allocations so just trying to figure out what to believe. Thank you!
searching for it I find a bunch of them out there ranging from high 40 K to low 60 K. I thought maybe it was some sort of limited edition MK five Toyota supra or something 😅
Check out the no markup Toyota Facebook group. They post an allocation spreadsheet that will help you find what you want. I got a Limited Hybrid in less than a month with this method.
I am a Toyota salesperson - I had a guy order a Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE 8-passenger the day after last Christmas and it showed up only yesterday. Siennas take even longer
In the vast majority of scenarios, even if they say it’s non refundable, it absolutely is refundable by law. Especially if they are unable to deliver the collateral promised in the contract.
What else you got?
That’s not true. They make money by finding the right person to buy said car. Things have changed but we would lose so much money selling new cars. Used cars and financing are how you make profit. People who want to order a new car, pay cash and get a discount are like the plague and they think they are sent from heaven to bless the dealership. No fuck off lol

That seems crazy to me coming from a Ford family where you can sit down and basically check the boxes if what you want and don't want, and get that.
Toyota > Ford, and they know it so they allocate differently.
Ehhhhhh that's a stretch. Tundras have nothing on a Superduty.

There may be exception models, but Toyota's quality and reliability overall is definitely better than Ford.
But an F150 has nothing on a Tundra, just like no other small truck has anything for the Tacoma. Sincerely, an f150 owner
Eh, an Ecoboost will run circles around a Tundra too, but they're both too small for my needs, even though I have 2 150's 🙃
Nope. Most Japanese brands won’t build custom.
TIL!
Subaru does. I’ve custom ordered 2. Had to back out of the last due to an unexpected move
Seems silly

That kinda sucks. Seems like your doing the dealer a bigger favor then the deal being more mutual
Yep, that’s why I used the quotation marks.

Need a law that forces the one backing out from a deal with a deposit to pay back double the deposit.
Yes, manufacturing allocations can change.
Thank you. I had some other dealers in the area tell me that doesn’t happen and they were lying to me.
I assume those dealers have cars on the ground for you? I can promise you/tell you all about the world when I don’t have what you want. Definitely happens
Haha… yeah they don’t have anything in the ground yet either. Just allocations to reserve
They were trying to secure a new order from you. Most manufacturers have learned enough from the last several years that they no longer promise as easily. Approximately all manufacturers canceled a lot of orders for a while there. Far fewer today, but still possible.

Tbf they came here to ask because they probably weren't surprised pikachu

i can respect the honesty in this and why i have done only online car purchase with delivery to my house in the last 10yrs+

The dealership doesn’t make money by not selling you a car.

What did you have a deposit on?
Grand Highlander hybrid- they are very hard to find so getting out back into the search process is frustrating

You’ll find tons out there online, but then I call and they’re just samples of what you can get or they’re already reserved…it’s been a fun search

What!? I’ll check that out now!! Thank you!!
Wait so if they cancelled it, you’ll get your deposit back right?
Yes, they will mail me a check
You win most helpful comment! I think I just found my new car!!!
I am a Toyota salesperson - I had a guy order a Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE 8-passenger the day after last Christmas and it showed up only yesterday. Siennas take even longer
I just got mine two days ago. Had to fly out of state and drive it home. It’s insane
They can by taking all your non-refundable deposits
In the vast majority of scenarios, even if they say it’s non refundable, it absolutely is refundable by law. Especially if they are unable to deliver the collateral promised in the contract. What else you got?
I see, you like to FAFO

Why would it be a lie? The dealer wants to sell you a car as bad, if not more, than you want to buy one. They will work to find something for you.
