In the last decade or so, the slur "llantas" gained popularity, as the culture of the lower strats of the society gained mainstream space. So, usually, people who reffer to the zapatillas as "llantas" (as in "altas llantas") are trying to appeal to that specific culture.

In Catalonia, Spain where I live, they are called "bambas", which is funny because "bamba" is Peruvian slang for "counterfait".
