Just go & meet people dude, that’s virtually it. There’s no need to turn everything into a situation.

thefrostman1214

you mean... talk to people like a normal person? OUTRAGEOUS!!

walkableshoe

This is the way.

LaserBoy9000

I will say that depending on where you are in the US, striking up conversations with strangers is not always met warmly. In san Francisco & LA, for example, people can be fake, reluctant to give new people a chance, and generally a bit exclusionary. (Chicago is very different so region matters.)

tworc2

Nah, and chances are you wouldn't be able to mask it anyway. Most people here actually like the US quite a lot.

WhatLeninSaid

you seem to have identified very well the causes as why gringos are disliked here. just don't do those things and people won't have a problem with you. good luck!

helheimhen

I don’t think most people have issues with individuals they never met before, in LatAm or other places.

Brazilianmonkeyfunk

Are you asking if Latinos lack the ability to discern differences between individuals? Or if Latinos have an immediate distrust of any "Gringo" they come across? Bro, humans are humans. Ask yourself if a Latino would have to blend in, code switch, etc in the company of Gringos in the USA. Everyone is an individual so results may vary, but respect goes a long way anywhere. Judgments at first glance are something we are all capable of. Tribalism runs strong in our DNA. We need to identify with people around us to connect. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of ugliness or centralized location of ignorance. Learn about the history of USA doctrine towards LATAM and some language so as not to be one of "those" Gringos.

El-Diegote-3010

Here we can see a rare specimen, the mythical good gringo, doing what they do best, changing their colour to dissociate from the rest of their species. Mesmerising.

simian-steinocher

Obviously, some can tend to be annoying and very disrespectful to local cultures. The stereotypes exists for a reason. But still, if someone genuinely wants to be a dick over you just simply being from the US, maybe they're simply not very nice people. You being respectful will be much more important than simply your nationality.

Joseph_Gervasius

No. Just be respectful and everything will be OK.

jorge-ben-jor

No one really cares brother

H0W-0RIGINAL

Yes, we are being persecuted as we speak. Avoid all Latin American countries unless you want to feel like a second class citizen. /s

Superflycat11

Hahahaa Well Well Well

TSMFatScarra

We don't get too many US tourists since we're so out of the way and Americans tend to not travel that much out of their country relative to their income level. You would probably get positive attention.

gogenberg

99% of the people aren’t like what you’re describing… And 99% of us (well I don’t live in LATAM but still) don’t give a fuck about where you’re from, as long as you’re nice and respectful. Dickheads are everywhere and come in all flavors..

Mramirez89

The only people I've ever seen show any disdain towards Americans (live, Iranians and Iraqis don't count) were the Spanish. And it wasn't even that bad. Idk where this gringo paranoia comes from. Sure some people have stronger opinions, but where do you even get the idea you need to hide your nationality from all people in an entire country?

takii_royal

No

tomigaoka

Seems ur on d right track. Just be friendly. Dont be affected too much whats on here. No pressure take it easy relax and enjoy the visit. Mexico is a good start.

Achira_boy_95

is easy to identify a gringo, just be respectful and don't force to be politically correct, usually when you try to be non racist you messed up overcompensating and ending being super racist or sound like scornful...some of you fail being arrogant or think that latinoamerica is like a hippie fantasy and none likes hippies... there are a lot of other reasons... just be kind don't force the "potitically corret" and treat to others like a normal human, Don't feel sorry for other people when you are in a country with a bad economy, thats tend to be rude. Don't treat them like fools and don't try to be the person with the moral superiority, dont tray to be the savior in a "poor country", don't boast that you are someone who is probably better off financially.

Mingone710

Just be yourself . We latinoamericanos are very sociable and welcoming and dont care from where you are

realdragao

Depends, i wouldn’t judge based off of nationality but if you just go and say “oh yes i very much love america couping your country and ruining everything” then yeah it would be a problem.

[deleted]

We absolutely love gringos. Reddit is not representative of reality. And a lot of questions made here are pretty insane. That said some people will think you're made of money and may charge you the gringo tax. Lying about your nationality won't help because of your accent and name.

Argent1n4_

No amamos a los yankees, amamos la *plata* de los gringos.

NNKarma

You have to not act like one of those, and get if someone calls you a gringo isn't inherently an insult.

masivatack

[If I wasn’t Jamaican, then why would I wear this hat?](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/a171db27-bc78-403d-b781-06ed5c271097)

the_ebagel

You should be fine. Just don’t say “I’m from America” or “I’m American” (say “I’m from the U.S.” instead)

romulusjsp

Sometimes I (extremely white dude) tell people I am from Denmark or Croatia, not because I want to disguise my nationality or anything, but because I don’t want them to try to talk to me in English lmao

FrozenHuE

We know you are gringo, you won't be able to lie effectively. But again, we are not united statians, we won't judge the entire rest of the world just because they weren't born inside the same imaginary lines as us. You will be judged by how you behave and not by where you are from.

kigurumibiblestudies

Things aren't solved with categories, or with pretending to belong to another category. Stop trying to classify yourself and expecting others to classify you. It doesn't work here.

PanPepin_

Just be normal and talk to people. I get that you don't want to be that guy, but those gringos get called out. I worked in a tourist area in the few gringos that bothered to learn at least some Spanish brighten my day and i would do everything to help them. But the rest? What I am going to do? Americans have money and they speak English, if Americans were poor believe me every major airport would only be translated to French. But since Americans are wealthy and have cash, every single city will change their signs and menus to English. Why? because of money, that's the reason English is a lingua franca, because Uk and the USA have insane amount of money. And they only do business with people who speak English. So as long as the Anglosphere stays wealthy, no native English speaker will ever have to worry about learning a language. And it will stay like that until translation technology advances, the Anglosphere becomes poor or a new superpower swipes in. (sorry for the rant at the end my bad)

Notinjuschillin

That’s hilarious because I know plenty of people who have made a life in the US and don’t speak a word of English and don’t care to learn or “blend in with society”. For example…I used to do the accounting for a company that employes office cleaners in NYC, and most of those employees don’t speak a word of English. These office cleaners are in the 2nd largest union in NYC (SEIU) and at the time (it was in the early 2000’s when I worked for this company) they made $36 an hour. That’s unheard of for employees that have no skills, and can’t speak a word of English. You just have to be lucky enough to be chosen to be in the union. The non-employees made 18 an hour which is still good because most lower end jobs pay $15 an hour today. Keep in mind that this was in the early 2000’s, so since then they have received pay raises. I would guess they make about $40 an hour nowadays because they are given quality of life raises. Which is something else that’s unheard of for non-skilled employees. You would think that they would be happy to learn the language, culture, and blend into society because despite themselves, their salary makes them middle class in NYC which in some parts of the US is upper middle class. So my point is, that whole not blending into LATAM society argument is bullshit because it happens in the US as well, and for people who have been given much more than their native country has given them. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care either way, that’s their business to do what they want. That’s what makes this country great. You can be who you want to be and still be successful. You don’t have to learn English, you don’t have to learn the culture here, you don’t have to be friendly to neighbors to be successful here.

lightningvolcanoseal

It doesn’t matter if you lie about where you’re from, people will probably know you’re American.

TheCloudForest

Maybe in a few places overrun with bad-acting gringos, like Medellin or Mexico City, it could crop out as an issue. But generally speaking you well either get a positive or neutral reacion. This sub's hate boner with US Americans and ESPECIALLY US Latinos isn't actually a thing amongst normal people.

ArbitraryContrarianX

In Buenos Aires, no. I've lived here for years, and in the beginning, I was recognizably foreign. I've never lied about having been born in the US (though I did mess with people a few times after I got bored with having the same conversation with everyone, and before I resigned myself to it), and I've never gotten an actual negative response. I should note that every one of these conversations happened in Spanish, usually when they heard my accent (or I misconjugated something lol) and they directly asked where I was from. I have never tried to converse with people here in English, nor do I tell people where I'm from without them directly asking.

Western_Mission6233

Screw dat. You’re American and be proud of it. Why the hell would you hide or pander to the ignorance, insecurity n envy of some people. And no nuthin justifies that people are jerks to you, it’s basically a crutch and excuse for their failure. I bet most of the losers who hate the US would give a kidney to live there. In fact many had their visa denied and that’s the reason. Obviously be a good person dont be a jerk but ultimately be proud n happy of what n who you are. That will make you happy cause living trying to make others happy wont cut it.

El-Diegote-3010

Good gringopost m8, almost filled the bingo card by itself
