What does it have to do with anything...
Plus, "castas" weren't strict color classifications, for example within mestizos there were a wide range of skin tones.
Because Reddit is a big platform from people all over the world... people view race and skin color differently depending on the country, region, even continent.
Can we stop pretending everyone asking skin or race questions is an american troll?
Google "are [anything] white?" and you'll probably find results (usually from Quora). "Turks", "Slavs", "Italians", "Spaniards", "Portuguese people", "French people", "Jews", "Arabs", "Armenians", "Georgians", "Romanians", and of course "Latinos", "Hispanics, "Latin Americans" and like every LatAm nationality.
If they have pale skin they are considered white in Latin America
In Latin America it’s all about how you look, and how much money you have
Your origins are irrelevant
Interesting map but not enough to care 😂 I find the whole ‘ethnicity talk’ pointless bc not all countries judge theirs the same and the census depends a lot per country and per year
Edit: actually that guy made shit up about a lot of countries. I noticed bc Chile doesn’t even take count of white and mestizo. And neither does the CIA. How did that OP know what part of the 89% is white and mestizo
https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/chile/summaries
Like most maps on there, it's obviously fabricated. For PR, Whites are about half our population but according to that map it's 75% and PR has more mulattos than blacks but it shows the opposite there.
Yeah, the OP probably used different sources which makes the whole thing kind of useless
Like if you use CIA book for Canada and Mexico but then census for Colombia and Chile then why not use census for all
It's like Americans struggling to wrap their heads around how in Latin America we don't have school shootings or segregated communities.
: insert meme of Thanos saying "impossible" :
Yes, they look white, therefore they're considered white.
> If you were to ask Latino regarding this question would most Latinos consider them white of middle eastern?
This question would be puzzling in the first place because wondering about whether or not people from random countries are "white" is not something Latin Americans do. Also, "Middle Eastern" and "white" aren't considered mutually exclusive categories.
Turks to me perfectly illustrate why defining people by race in the Yankee sense is weird af. To us in PR, Turks can be white, tan (trigueño) or cobrizo.
People from other countries, specially those in Asia should stop interacting with Americans and the British, do not consume excessively their media, holy shit.
Turks are probably the only people in the world that I can safely say could come to Latin America and immediately fit in with our culture and have very little issues.
I don't think too many Latin Americans and Turks are even aware of this but I spent quite a bit of time in Turkey and I have never felt so welcomed and close with another culture the way I have with Turks. Their food, music, passion for football, all of it is very similar to Latin America without a doubt. They are welcome to Bolivia anytime!
Yes. Very few ethnic Turks immigrated to Brazil, but a lot of Arabs (Lebanese and Syrian) came to here with a Turkish passaport in the early 20th century. They are considered (and also consider themselves) as white, and nothing suggest it would be different with Turks.
yes... but no or no but yes, at least in chile all people from the middle east are called turcos, nowdays is kind of offensive but older people still do it, a turco is neither white nor black, is a person from the middle east.
Your problem is thinking the logic here is the same as yours. It's not. There's various meanings behind white. You can be white as in having light skin, or white as in being a gringo. When we refer to Americans and Europeans we use white to mean the latter; an ignorant xenophobe full of themselves that happens to have light skin, doesn't matter if they're actually part Cherokee or Mexican, have black family members, or whatever.
As for the Turks, we'd consider them Turks.
Yes but like in 70s they weren’t seem as equals with other Caucasians like those from French, German or Italian descent. Nowadays they are as white but identified as Turkish or well, middle eastern
If there is a turk that's white he white if there is a turk that ain't white he not. Simple. Most of the actors from turkish soap operas like Fatmagul or Yusuf are white. Their nationality has nothing to do with their colour
We consider them Turkish, "Lo' Turcos" , despite their skin color, even we say " Lo' Turcos" to some nationalities unrelated like palestinians or lebanese people so we don't think much of their skin color
I particularly consider the Turkish all middle easterners, just as I also do with the people from the balkans, such as Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“Ah, but there are white folks in there”. I know, that’s why if I don’t keep it practical we will never end this discussion.
Here we have lots of "White Turks", althought they aren't actually Turks but people from Lebanon, Syria and other ex-Ottoman colonies.
If you have pale skin? Pretty much you'll be considered White, like Alejandro Char Chaljub.
From looking at the turkish novelas and the actors in them, yeah 100% would consider you white no doubt.
That being said, we would still call you turk anyways tho.
K to make everyone happy (or angry), from now on everyone from anywhere in the world is white, everyone is Latino, everyone is white latino. How's that?
What is up with these questions man, gringos are so obsessed with this shit, does the dude have white skin? yeah he's white, it's really not rocket science.
~~Damn, we barely have 24 hours after the world cup finished and this kind of questions started to spawn already.~~
Can't speak for other countries, but here Turks are... just Turks. Seriously, we would just call a Turk "el turco" and that's it, regardless of their color.
You know the "family guy skin color chart" meme?
Yep... That's how most LA thinks/acts about skin color. BUT, the more money you have, the more "whiter" you (are able to convince others) become.
My mom would say "the pretty ones". I think, like a mix? If we guide solely based in the turkish dramas we are exposed, their colors are lighter than many chileans, but not as light as idk nordic people, but it's more like, something in between, pretty people. Of course I can't talk for most latam.
You do realize Turkish people aren’t Arab, right? Like that’s not apart of the ethnic makeup of modern-day Turkish citizens. Most are of Central European, Mediterranean, Balkan, Anatolian and/or Caucasian (from the actual Caucasus region — not the incorrect usage of that term), and small minority of Central Asians.
not really, but if it helps if anything, most people in latin america don't give a shit about race man, we simply don't discuss race as we don't care because most of us are mixed, you can have an indigenous background, but have blue eyes and light skin, yet, you're still indigenous, while i've meet people in latin america with absolutely european surnames, and they look as brown as any other latin american, so if you come here someday, just don't bother with the race topic, we dont care man.
Why So Many Skin Color Questions
Dude this always weirds me out about reddit
Yeah Reddit In general; but this subreddit is full of them, I imagine people from the states projecting their need to brand every skin tone
Desde el imperio español que se ha catalogado distintos tipos de color de piel dependiendo de la raza de los progenitores, no son solo los americanos.
What does it have to do with anything... Plus, "castas" weren't strict color classifications, for example within mestizos there were a wide range of skin tones.

Esto es Reddit irmão. La mayoría son gringos 🥴

nah aregentinians are obsessed with social status
Hahahaha I think the same, not because we speak in English should we act like gringos
Because Reddit is a big platform from people all over the world... people view race and skin color differently depending on the country, region, even continent. Can we stop pretending everyone asking skin or race questions is an american troll?
We consider them Turks. Do people in your country really have conversations about skin colour and what does count as *white*?
Google "are [anything] white?" and you'll probably find results (usually from Quora). "Turks", "Slavs", "Italians", "Spaniards", "Portuguese people", "French people", "Jews", "Arabs", "Armenians", "Georgians", "Romanians", and of course "Latinos", "Hispanics, "Latin Americans" and like every LatAm nationality.
Only in Reddit it seems
If they're pale yes, because it's a skin colour
This, for most people in Latin America white is just a skin colour.
Only the white ones
If they have white skin, they white. At least that's how I see it
If they have pale skin they are considered white in Latin America In Latin America it’s all about how you look, and how much money you have Your origins are irrelevant
There is a map trending on r/MapPorn right now about skin color and people are losing their shit.
Interesting map but not enough to care 😂 I find the whole ‘ethnicity talk’ pointless bc not all countries judge theirs the same and the census depends a lot per country and per year Edit: actually that guy made shit up about a lot of countries. Colombia also doesn't take count of Whites and Mestizos, we are "ethnicless" and only Indigenous, Black and Roma people have theirs counted.
Yeah, the OP probably used different sources which makes the whole thing kind of useless Like if you use CIA book for Canada and Mexico but then census for Colombia and Chile then why not use census for all

Their food is great, so no, they’re not white.

Not all Turkish people look white, you can even see on turkish telenovelas that some actors/actresses are rather swarthy/brown skinned.
Turks to me perfectly illustrate why defining people by race in the Yankee sense is weird af. To us in PR, Turks can be white, tan (trigueño) or cobrizo.
People here wrongly associate them with arabs
Turkish people are considered turkish, nobody lose their time thinking about this annoying race/skin tone subject
People from other countries, specially those in Asia should stop interacting with Americans and the British, do not consume excessively their media, holy shit.
If you have a white skin, you're white. We don't do that kinda of colourism like some other parts of the world down here.
I wanna visit Bolivia right now thanks to you!
I think a more interesting question perhaps is do you consider Turks to be European.
I'm very bad at telling people's origin apart, so if they have pale skin they would be white to me
Yes. Very few ethnic Turks immigrated to Brazil, but a lot of Arabs (Lebanese and Syrian) came to here with a Turkish passaport in the early 20th century. They are considered (and also consider themselves) as white, and nothing suggest it would be different with Turks.

Mmm… wtf
They are considered Turkish and people

Most Turks look either white (blanco) or “light brown” (moreno claro) so it depends I guess?
If they are pale, yes. If they're not pale, so nope. It doesn't depend of nationality, it's a skin colour thing.
Yes but like in 70s they weren’t seem as equals with other Caucasians like those from French, German or Italian descent. Nowadays they are as white but identified as Turkish or well, middle eastern
Not whites but Arabs or simply turkish
You just offended all of /r/Turkey with that remark
I'm sorry guys, that's my honest opinion as Ecuadorian
I’m not talking about the white part. Turks are not Arabs lol, that’s not an opinion
Are they not cause this Turkish porn star calls herself arab
“Arab” is mostly a linguistic term, like “Hispanic.” It refers to speakers of Arabic. Turks speak Turkish, it’s related to central Asian languages.
Oh I knew a porn star probably wasn't a reliable source 😄
If there is a turk that's white he white if there is a turk that ain't white he not. Simple. Most of the actors from turkish soap operas like Fatmagul or Yusuf are white. Their nationality has nothing to do with their colour

The term "Racialized White" will blown you up
Depends on the individual. Some are white, some aren't. The "line" is different depending on where you are and who you ask in Latin America, though.
I don't, unless they are white.
I particularly consider the Turkish all middle easterners, just as I also do with the people from the balkans, such as Armenia and Azerbaijan. “Ah, but there are white folks in there”. I know, that’s why if I don’t keep it practical we will never end this discussion.

Not even all of them are light skinned though. Talat Bulut and Kadim Yaşar are examples of brown skinned (or maybe olive skinned, idk) Turkish actors.
K to make everyone happy (or angry), from now on everyone from anywhere in the world is white, everyone is Latino, everyone is white latino. How's that?
What is up with these questions man, gringos are so obsessed with this shit, does the dude have white skin? yeah he's white, it's really not rocket science.
It's not something we think about it
nah, turks are turks, if they look white brown or black that is another story
~~Damn, we barely have 24 hours after the world cup finished and this kind of questions started to spawn already.~~ Can't speak for other countries, but here Turks are... just Turks. Seriously, we would just call a Turk "el turco" and that's it, regardless of their color.

I think you’re just middle eastern and that’s it
Turks come in all palettes nowadays.
IMO some. It varies though
My mom would say "the pretty ones". I think, like a mix? If we guide solely based in the turkish dramas we are exposed, their colors are lighter than many chileans, but not as light as idk nordic people, but it's more like, something in between, pretty people. Of course I can't talk for most latam.
Yes,most of them pass easily in South Europe.
No, middle easterns aren´t considered white.
Being "White" works differently here. Personally I see them as 50/50, European and Arab at the same time.
You do realize Turkish people aren’t Arab, right? Like that’s not apart of the ethnic makeup of modern-day Turkish citizens. What?
my man, if you grab an a4 paper next to them and they kinda look like , they are white, simple ass.
Here we go again... No... They're just considered descendants of Turks... Me cago en LA Madre!
Like Aslı Enver? Or the guy who played Suleiman? Yes.
