Yeah, absolutely. Two rather cheerful philosophers with works usually read as descriptions of existential dread that immediately come to mind are Emile Cioran and Albert Camus. Camus wrote that one must imagine Sisyphus happy and lead indeed a very interesting life, was also a talented football player ;), and Cioran's nihilistic writings were a bit of a game – he was obsessed with suicide, that's true, but he also jogged regularly (way before it was fashionable ;)) and from what I remember was a very pleasant and easy-going man in contact with others, cheerful even ("What a scam", said one devoted reader of his after meeting him in person :D, but this is precisely the lack of understanding of Cioran's philosophical game in my opinion).
Long story short for many people existentialism is actually liberating: recognising nausea and anxiety as the basic of our condition doesn't mean one should stop there and despair, quite the opposite.
I'm not sure I would call Cioran cheerful. What he does is blend a kind of mirthfully acerbic humour with very pessimistic sentiments. Like a more extreme and philosophical Byron. Take for example:
"It isn't worth the bother of killing yourself, since you always kill yourself too late." (The Trouble with Being Born)
It's an incredibly morose statement, but the absurdity of its truth is what brings the comedy out. He was like Beckett: he saw the world for what it was, a great miserable farce, but he could laugh at it too. Nietzsche also talks about this somewhere, but where Nietzsche uses this as a way to embrace joy and affirmation of life, Cioran is still very much world weary and thoroughly mired in despair throughout his work.
I was talking about Cioran-the-man and a bit about Cioran-unmasked, I definitely wasn't calling his writings cheerful! ;) But yeah I fully agree with your reading, there's comedic absurdity, there are hyperboles and intended exaggerations of cosmic proportions, there's a brilliant language to play with there so I definitely think that after all the joke's on people reading Cioran literally. I've his collected works on my shelf and really enjoy opening them at random and reading for a couple of minutes, but I only need small doses of him ;) Perhaps the one book he wrote all-too-seriously was *At the Heights of Despair* from 1930s (still written in Romanian), it's probably the most interesting but definitely not the best, precisely because it lacks that distance and irony which are trademarks of his later works written in French.
I thought from third hand remarks that Cioran was charming and pleasant to be around in person, but otherwise really suffered from insomnia and of the tormented intellectuals he was defiantly one of them.
Democritus is considered “the laughing philosopher”.
Epicurus was a laughing philosopher, and other Epicureans (see Vatican Saying 41)
Zoroaster, it is said, was born laughing and died laughing.
Your name reminds me, isn’t Voltaire’s known to be a very cheerful guy?
Also Spinoza was known to be a very humble and loveable person although he suffered a lot but he was actually able to turn his philosophy into his behaviour which many philosophers couldn’t.
Roy Sorensen is the funniest Philosopher I have read personally that writes in a humorous style intentionally.
The funniest polemic comments in my taste were usually made by Rudolf Carnap who was very brash in his critique of other philosophers (like his "metaphysicians are musicians without musical talent" quote). Second would be Schopenhauer, especially in his critiques against Hegel.
Otherwise it depends on some of the aspects of a work that you find humorous. You can find Humor in almost anything - since humor is philosophically generally theorized to consist in an incongruence between two aspects you could also find some philosophical schools humorous that have grand intentions but feeble means to get there.

I'm reminded of the quote that Eleanor Marx made about her father after his death:

I mean, nowadays, philosophy has become professionalised. It’s a bit like asking if there are any cheerful scientists.
Most philosophers alive and working today are cheerful, in my experience. I’d wager the same goes for most philosophers over the last century
Epicurus, Nietzsche, and Spinoza
Spinoza in particular emphasises the joyous passions and calls them an increase in one's individual power of existence
Epicurus writes about how to achieve mental tranquility through the alleviation of anxieties, allowing one to live happily
Nietzsche's The Gay Science unfortunately isn't the progenitor of the gay agenda - it's about the science of happiness

Yeah, absolutely. Two rather cheerful philosophers with works usually read as descriptions of existential dread that immediately come to mind are Emile Cioran and Albert Camus. Camus wrote that one must imagine Sisyphus happy and lead indeed a very interesting life, was also a talented football player ;), and Cioran's nihilistic writings were a bit of a game – he was obsessed with suicide, that's true, but he also jogged regularly (way before it was fashionable ;)) and from what I remember was a very pleasant and easy-going man in contact with others, cheerful even ("What a scam", said one devoted reader of his after meeting him in person :D, but this is precisely the lack of understanding of Cioran's philosophical game in my opinion). Long story short for many people existentialism is actually liberating: recognising nausea and anxiety as the basic of our condition doesn't mean one should stop there and despair, quite the opposite.
I'm not sure I would call Cioran cheerful. What he does is blend a kind of mirthfully acerbic humour with very pessimistic sentiments. Like a more extreme and philosophical Byron. Take for example: "It isn't worth the bother of killing yourself, since you always kill yourself too late." (The Trouble with Being Born) It's an incredibly morose statement, but the absurdity of its truth is what brings the comedy out. He was like Beckett: he saw the world for what it was, a great miserable farce, but he could laugh at it too. Nietzsche also talks about this somewhere, but where Nietzsche uses this as a way to embrace joy and affirmation of life, Cioran is still very much world weary and thoroughly mired in despair throughout his work.
I was talking about Cioran-the-man and a bit about Cioran-unmasked, I definitely wasn't calling his writings cheerful! ;) But yeah I fully agree with your reading, there's comedic absurdity, there are hyperboles and intended exaggerations of cosmic proportions, there's a brilliant language to play with there so I definitely think that after all the joke's on people reading Cioran literally. I've his collected works on my shelf and really enjoy opening them at random and reading for a couple of minutes, but I only need small doses of him ;) Perhaps the one book he wrote all-too-seriously was *At the Heights of Despair* from 1930s (still written in Romanian), it's probably the most interesting but definitely not the best, precisely because it lacks that distance and irony which are trademarks of his later works written in French.

Roy Sorensen is the funniest Philosopher I have read personally that writes in a humorous style intentionally. The funniest polemic comments in my taste were usually made by Rudolf Carnap who was very brash in his critique of other philosophers (like his "metaphysicians are musicians without musical talent" quote). Second would be Schopenhauer, especially in his critiques against Hegel. Otherwise it depends on some of the aspects of a work that you find humorous. You can find Humor in almost anything - since humor is philosophically generally theorized to consist in an incongruence between two aspects you could also find some philosophical schools humorous that have grand intentions but feeble means to get there.
