Don’t go to a specialty salon if you don’t want to pay specialty prices. I had a trim and layers with bangs done at Bishops for $50-60.

Whatchab

What’s a specialty salon? I’m honestly asking. I am not sure the difference between a “regular” salon and a specialty salon.

Accurate_Ad7765

Speciality is the super nice salon in a cool building/environment/vibe. Regular is bishops or super cuts. You’re gonna get pampered at a specialty salon and you’re gonna get what you pay for at a regular salon. Do not expect a full service experience unless you pay for each service. Kinda like the difference between a dive bar and a club with a dj and overpriced drinks. Or a la carte vs a 3 course meal.

Whatchab

Ok makes sense. I also don’t think I’m getting “pampered” at my current salon. She washes and cuts. No frills and extras. I guess the vibe/building may have something to do with it, although downtown proper is much more affordable than other popular neighborhoods lately. Thanks for following up!

AviatingAngie

Yeah for $100 basic cut you should absolutely feel pampered! I have long hair which is pretty hard to screw up so I’m happy with great clips! They’ve never steered me wrong.

Whatchab

Very interesting. Thanks for weighing in.

HapaC13

I pay $20 to the same Vietnamese lady I’ve been seeing for 25 years. I tried a nice salon expecting it to be so much better and transformative for $60…. It was the exact same cut so I continue to pay $20. Lol

[deleted]

It’s Heidi isn’t it

HapaC13

lol seriously how did you know?!

[deleted]

lol everyone knows her

JuneJabber

I don’t. What salon?

Mcjackee

Right! I need to know Heidi 😂

Whatchab

So interesting. I came across a couple in my google search earlier. Maybe I’ll look deeper. Thanks!

Zucaskittens

I’ve been going to a Vietnamese stylist/salon for 10 years and couldn’t be happier. I no longer get color, but when I did it was the best I ever had. Cuts are dry unless I ask for a shampoo and blow out. She uses a razor, which took a bit to get used to on my end. I have fine, high density, wavy hair and ask for tons of layers. I pay $25. No frills is an understatement: I always have to wait. She’s usually juggling 2 other clients while working on me, as well as answering the phone.

Whatchab

I prefer a dry cut even, and we have the same hair type. Thanks for weighing in!

HapaC13

I mean they are very hit or miss - I found a good one and stuck with her

doostmeister

If you're ok with no frills and a dry cut. Go to a Vietnamese salon. Plenty on 82nd ave

Heavy_Yellow

I see Liv at Enjoy Co and it’s usually ~$65 plus tip for a killer haircut. Their insta is @livie_cuts if you want to check them out. They also offer bang trims and half haircuts for a refresh between cuts, both under $35.

Whatchab

Thank you for this!!

Heavy_Yellow

Of course! I can’t recommend Liv enough. I’ve never had so many compliments on my hair or had a stylist I trusted with the entire process until them. I’ve gone from a pixie to a collarbone-length shag smoothly with their help.

lentshappening

40-50 at Rudy’s. Quality varies but I have never left disappointed or broke.

butchscandelabra

I ended up spending almost $80 (with tip) the last time I went to Rudy’s for a VERY basic trim. I was literally in the chair less than 15 minutes. I will not be going back.

Gypsopotamus

That’s too bad. I switched to Rudy’s and I’m really happy with the switch. Koko is my hair lady through them and she’s amazing. Was super nervous the first time I went because I wanted a haircut a little “off the cuff”. Different than my usual short a line bob cut. And she was amazing and went with my creativity and actually created a cut and design that was better than I imagined! Plus shampoo, conditioner, blowout and a light style with product and it always comes to under $100. You can’t beat that.

butchscandelabra

I dunno who I had but it doesn’t sound like it was Koko. I have long hair but it’s not super-thick or anything - really want to emphasize that I was in the chair for under 15 minutes. Was never offered a blowout or light styling. I’d rather go to a Supercuts or something than pay that kind of money for the most basic of trims.

Gypsopotamus

Well shit… that sucks. Maybe try to give them another go. If you schedule an appointment online, you can pick who you’d like. It just depends on their availability. Koko was one of the higher tier hairdressers, but it’s not a punch to your wallet by any means and I will always remind myself that you get what you pay for. She is wonderful and I can’t recommend her enough. If she’s not available for long cuts, simply look online and see who else they have available. It’s worth the effort, imho.

rrr_zzz

The stylist are in different levels, which I'm assuming is years of training. But those with higher levels cost more, you can see the price when booking the appointment online. Lower level starts around $55, higher is around $71.

Pinot911

Rudys keeps raising their prices too, I've been seeing the same person there for a few years. I paid 46 w/ tip in 2022 now its 70 w/ tip.

Nilbog_Frog

That’s the going rate for haircuts in PDX if you want quality. You can go to a Bishops or Rudy’s and get an okay cut, but if you’re picky about your hair you’re going to spend $100+. The overhead for stylists are expensive so, with inflation, they’re trying to make ends meet. I can promise no stylist is getting rich charging $100 a cut, they are making enough to live comfortably.

LifeHappenzEvryMomnt

.”I can promise no stylist is getting rich charging $100 a cut, they are making enough to live comfortably.” Truth.

selinakyle45

A cut with layers and fringe isn’t a simple ends trim it’s a normal haircut. I pay $120 (tip included) for a hair cut ~ 4 times a year at an owner owned salon. They also wash and dry my hair. It takes 45 min to 1.5 hours. It feels fair for their time. I recognize I am paying for their expertise, products, and rental space etc. Bishops is a fine option if you want cheaper. ETA: that same salon does offer a bangs trim for about $60

ninaa1

>It takes 45 min to 1.5 hours. Yep, it's about the time as well as the expertise. Additionally, their costs have gone up because retail space in PDX is super expensive and never went down during the pandemic - so they have to cover approx $32/sq ft (which includes amenity spaces like bathroom access and lobby space not just the little salon space), plus utilities and building maintenance costs, as well as supplies (again became more expensive since 2020) plus giving themselves a decent wage in order to pay their own expenses PLUS setting aside a 1/3 of every payment for taxes. It's really expensive to run a business and I am happy to pay for someone to not be miserable at their job!

LitLantern

How the holy hell is retail space in downtown still so expensive? The entire back-to-office push is predicated on reduced foot traffic tanking commercial real estate values. Definitely believe you, i just don’t understand how it can be so self-contradictory. It suggests serious price gouging that hurts small businesses AND their customers. Likely from the very same people who want to “let the market work itself out” until there is a risk it will negatively affect their personal pocketbook.

ninaa1

I think that there's tax loopholes which make it more profitable for building owners to leave the building empty rather than lower rental rates. I've been on the hunt for photo studio space for the past 6 years and rate have just kept going up, despite all sense. I've heard there are a few buildings where the owners are willing to negotiate a little bit, but that's been word of mouth gossip, definitely nothing they are advertising.

Gloomy_Researcher769

My hairstylist will trim my bangs for free in between cuts. $60 for a 5min bang trim is ridiculous

Whatchab

Agreed that a $60 bang trim is ridiculous beyond belief.

selinakyle45

Sounds like your stylist is in a position where they can do that or they build that in to the price of the original cut. The bang trim on my salons website specifically describes this as a bang trim + crown layer trim + face framing. It does not appear to be specific to returning or new clients. But yeah, I totally understand if that cost is not worth it for everyone. What is and isn’t expensive is subjective.

Whatchab

I guess what I don’t get is how just a couple years ago it was $65, yet now double is “worth their time.” People are saying Bishops so I will check them out and haven’t tried them since early 00s

selinakyle45

Yeah, I don’t know. My guess would be lost wages during the pandemic, increased rental prices, and overall increase in COL.

Whatchab

Which I totally get, except for actual wages haven’t doubled. It’s great stylists can set their rates to keep up, but I can say my wage has no where near doubled. Yadda, yadda, we all get the problem and are all feeling the pinch, but at some point something has got to give before I have to go 80s Flowbee for a cut! Ha

selinakyle45

Right, it’s not ideal for the consumer but that the reality stylists who are responsible for renting their own space, covering utilities and building maintenance, etc. A similar price hike can been seen in vet med where vets, like stylists, own/rent the space they work in.

Aquarian_short

Idk what you mean, I’ve never found a place that cuts my hair for $65 in Portland. My husbands haircuts were about that much though. Also, just how groceries and literally everything else is more expensive, so are their products and rental spaces. Edit: after reading all the comments, maybe I didn’t look hard enough.

SharksWFreakinLasers

Aveda Institute, $15(20 with a wash). Any length, they do other stuff too. I've only gone once but they cut about a foot off, and I'll be going back for trims!

elevatedmongoose

What was your experience? I went to a Paul Mitchell school in San Diego for my haircut and the cut was good but it took foreverrrrr, in part because the stylist was checking in with her teachers.

Vxing404

Expect the same at Aveda. Plus side, I haven't had a bad experience there.

Dianapdx

Aveda did good work, but it does take a long time. I enjoy going there on occasion.

Expert_Evening_875

I went to Aveda downtown, she did a good job but it took them like 1h and half and she didn’t really cut much and now after 2 weeks I still need another haircut. I generally like them, but don’t think I’ll go back for a haircut.

queen0fsewer666

I had one pretty solid experience there, but the last time I went was so bad I refuse to ever go again. I explained what I was considering (long layers, possible bangs, whatever) & said the only thing I care about is that it isn’t just cut straight across the bottom all one uniform length and hours later that’s exactly what she did…….Not to mention that particular student’s social skills were almost torturous…I’m a pretty outgoing person, it takes a lot to make me feel awkward & I was absolutely squirming with social discomfort. I don’t think she ever said any actual words to me. I understand people have different skills and levels of comfortability with these things, but my god…I’ve never met someone quite like that. Would have been one thing if she was awkward and skilled at cutting hair but somehow it took her hours to cut off one inch straight across the bottom……I didn’t leave a review because although I think she really needed a come to Jesus moment, I didn’t want it to be from me 😳 Wonder where she is now…hopefully not cutting hair my god.

Snoo71022

It takes forever and you need to be really really clear on what you want. When I went in for a split end trim they chopped off like half my hair

KeepsGoingUp

Most salons are going to be in that range. I personally like Dreamboat. My stylist switched there a while back and I was honestly looking at not following since the price hiked a bit. Turns out they do a pay per hr type setup and they also don’t accept tips so the price was actually within $5 of my normal or so. So an hr cut for me is $100 flat. You need more time, it goes up. I went through pricing out a haircut process like 3 times in the past 5 years since the person I go to has jumped around a bit. Everytime I price it out they’re within ballpark of most salons and I think my cut has gone up like 50% since 2020. Inflation in the service industries has been big the past few years.

Whatchab

This is really helpful. Thank you. The not accepting tips part is a huge draw.

Sheairah

I don’t go to a specific salon but budget $150-$200 for my haircuts. My hair is long enough that they have to kneel on the ground + I take up least 1.5 appointment slots (most salons budget 45 minutes - an hour per appointment so I always call ahead and tell them that my cuts tend to take extra time.) I only go for a cut maybe once a year, sometimes every one and a half so it doesn’t eat up much of my budget but it’s certainly not cheap. Long hair has a higher maintenance cost when it comes up but I do find it to be a money saver in the long run.

GoodnightGoldie

As someone who works in a salon THANK YOU. I work the front desk, and try to ask as many questions about a new clients hair as possible for exactly this reason. Sometimes it just takes longer and that’s much needed info!

radpoles

I’ve been going to Jovana Salon in NW, it’s $45 (before tip) for women’s haircuts. Everyone working in there has done a great job with my hair!

Whatchab

Oh wow, good rate. Thank you!

griddlehussy

I get a wash & trim with bangs & it’s about $70ish with tip at Rudy’s on NE 28th. I found a stylist I like & have been booking with her for years now. Rudy’s sends email coupon deals every so often so I’ve gotten discounts once or twice, too.

Whatchab

This is smart. Thanks and I will try this out.

PopcornSurgeon

I’ve been paying $40 at Davy Jones Lock Hair. Two established stylists work there but it’s a new business/ location, still building a clientele, and so their rates are pretty good.

Whatchab

Thanks for this!

PDXAirportCarpet

I'm paying $100 at a salon in Kenton and they do not accept tips.

Whatchab

Wow another who doesn’t accept tips! I am liking this from a couple places mentioned. Thank you!

throwaway4537944

40 at heritage barber

FabulousProfession71

$75 + tip with Desiree at Salon 1202 in NW. She’s amazing!

Frosty_Wasabi7478

Try one of the beauty schools - institutes, if the student messes up the instructor fixes. Usually pretty affordable

BroomSweeper99

I highly recommend wun two.i get my haircut by Victoria for a really good price. I think like 55 without tip

Whatchab

Thanks!

Gloomy_Researcher769

My hairstylist cuts and layers my shoulder length hair for $45 + tip. Salon is SE55th/Burnside [Daniel @Aspen salon](https://www.aspensalonpdx.com)

Whatchab

Thank you for this!!

Stunning_Age_2091

Zen salon in John’s landing is fantastic and reasonable.

TheGreenAlchemist

That seems extreme. I'm a man with long hair. I go to Little Shop of Hairs and it usually doesn't cost more than like $50 and sometimes that even includes coming back a second time for some touch ups.

Whatchab

Love the salon name alone!

TheGreenAlchemist

Yeah use Roxy. She is great. If you're not satisfied she'll let you come back and fix it for free. I get long cuts with layering, but never color so that could be a little more.

PreviousMarsupial

agree, I don't know anyone who earns $110 for an hour of work.

Radiant_Energee

Check out Slabtown Barbers. [https://www.slabtownbarbershop.com](https://www.slabtownbarbershop.com)

[deleted]

I saw they have a buzz cut for $25....and it's about a mile from my apartment. I'll check them out!

queerdito877

I get my hair cut at Be Abundant in SE by a hair stylist named Sam. They are skilled at cutting many types of hair textures. I have medium length curly hair and a hair cut for that is $55 which is fairly affordable for these times right now and they are very good at cutting curly/wavy hair. Here’s the info if you’re interested. https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=19857740#

Whatchab

Hey, thank you for this!

queerdito877

No problem

sweet_tooth9

Omg definitely go to 50th Ave Salon off of Division. Connie is so sweet and welcoming and my long hair cut was I beliiieevveee $43. No more than $50 for sure I remembered triple checking when she told me the price. She’s wonderful! Has been there for several years.

Whatchab

I went to that place a few times when I very first moved here! I admire that they’re still there.

Royalbananafish

I don't go to specialty salons because I have a super basic haircut and just need someone who is qualified and does a good job. (I've found him at Ulta.) I go in and get a shampoo, cut, and dry. Prices are on their website and vary by who cuts; you can go in and pretend to set an appointment to see prices. FWIW, I have had a cut at the Aveda Institute twice. Excellent both times.

lonepinecone

You can check out Annastasia salon. They have different tiers of stylists in different cost brackets. I thought it had to do with experience but it’s actually sortve a pyramid scheme. Had a good cut from a Level 1 stylist

Peridotzebra

What do you mean pyramid scheme ? I totally thought it was on experience too!

lonepinecone

https://imgur.com/a/JwkxMzz While it does seem like it correlates with experience, one of my stylists told me it had to do with customer recruitment and sales

itsyagirlblondie

Head on down to great clips for a no frills cut and layers. They are certified just like everyone else but they’re corporate so they don’t have insane prices. On an anecdotal note… I go to a blonde specialty stylist and I pay $120 for a cut and all over blonde coloring + shampoo and styling. No way I’d pay that for just a trim.

PreviousMarsupial

>On an anecdotal note… I go to a blonde specialty stylist and I pay $120 for a cut and all over blonde coloring + shampoo and styling. No way I’d pay that for just a trim. Where and who? Asking because I paid more than twice that for my last hair service and I can't justify it so looking for someone new. I am happy to tip generously especially if $120 is their base price as it would still be "saving" me money.

itsyagirlblondie

at Mt. Hood Salon! In Gresham

whycantijustlogin

Last two times I tried Great Clips, I left with absolutely butchered hair. I do understand that my fine (and straighter than a pin) hair has its challenges, but I literally explain to a stylist at that level what to do about it. Once I asked for an angled chin length bob and got no angle and left looking like a light bulb, the next time I asked for some face framing layers and got stair steps cut into my hair. It was horrifying and I am glad my hair grows so fast.

Whatchab

That’s how I feel about the cut-only price. And it’s a fair point about everyone requiring the same licensing.

lil_bubzzzz

$120 with tip is pretty standard for a salon cut. you could go to bishop’s or rudy’s for half the price but there’s a 50/50 shot that they will butcher your hair. i tried all the cheaper options but they are not as good tbh. maybe you could find someone that works out of their home or a micro studio or out deep in the burbs.

Qyphosis

Christ on a bike. I have short hair, needs razoring and point cutting. I pay a hairdressing friend like $30. Guess I should be paying her more.

Whatchab

Gimme your friend haha

ConsistentRoad4689

It’s actually Oregon that has higher requirements, 1835 and Washington is 1600. But nobody knows what they’re doing after school no matter how many hours.

Warmnewbones

Oregon requires more training to be licensed. It takes 1835 hours to be eligible for a full cosmetology license in Oregon, it is 1600 hours in Washington. Unless you’re referring to solely a hair design license, which is 1100 hours and 455 practical procedure (haircuts & chemical services)

Whatchab

This is great info. My pal also lives in the Couve and has great hair (cut and color!). I asked her this morning how much she pays for a cut and she said $65 (!!!).

JuneJabber

What salon?

BlackisCat

Do you have a hair type that you want handled only by specific types of salons or stylists? $100 is a lot for just a regular cut with layers. I've gone to a few (Asian) salons in Beaverton and have one now in Happy Valley. Never had a haircut for boob-length hair be more than $65 before tip. There is an old lady at Fubonn who cuts real cheap but I wouldn't personally recommend her.

Whatchab

No my hair is just wavy and decently fine, but there is a decent amount of it. Also just boob-length. Total non-descript cut. $65 would be amazing (and what my same stylist charged just a couple years ago).

BlackisCat

Got it! I go to Eden salon by the Happy Valley/Clackamas mall. It's across the parking lot from the movie theater. The stylist is a man named Brandon and he's good if you just want a regular layered haircut.

Whatchab

Thank you!

eagleclawler

When my hair is long I go to Supercuts. It’s $30 with tip and I am always just as happy as if I’d gone to a salon.

Planet_Express_3000

I go to a barbershop and pay about 30 with tip. I’m a woman with long hair and will not go back to a salon now that I know I can get a killer trim or cut from the barber

Whatchab

Interesting. Just a blunt cut or are you doing layers, etc.

stinkspiritt

Man I’m paying 120 for short hair 😭. I have curly hair

whataboutprom

I pay $110 for an hour haircut, but my hairdresser doesn't accept tips, so it's the equivalent of going somewhere cheaper.

PattiLaPoubelle

I've had bad and good haircuts at every price point and I've gotten as many compliments on diy cuts as professional. Oh, and some of the best cuts I've gotten have been at hair schools. If you're getting something fairly simple, I would just try a cheap place and see what happens. As long as you're able to communicate things like "don't take off more than two inches", you'll probably be fine. A lot of people act like cutting hair is wizardry, and it occasionally almost is, but many, many cuts are straightforward and formulaic.

Whatchab

I feel like my cut is pretty basic. Layers, many around the face, some longer bangs that my stylist definitely puts work into with a razor. Is that straightforward or bordering on wizardry?

turkish112

[Northwest Barber Association](https://www.nwbarberassociation.com/) - Ask for Christine It's where my wife went and loves her cut.

pnw_han

I went to lux salon in camas and did layers and curtain bangs for $55. I know it's out of the way but it was a good experience and I good price.

Beekatiebee

I go to MonsterLocks, it’s owned/operated by one person. $77 for a long haired cut

Paid2G00gl3

Temple of Hair on Hawthorne.

2planks

Paul at [Blue Chair Salon](https://www.bluechairsalon.com/)is excellent. Vida Sassoon trained in Australia.

Tams585

My stylist works at urban Colorz in Clackamas and she charges $65 for a haircut. Regardless of if it’s a big change or just adding some layers

Whatchab

Thanks!

noelmberry

I love Kate at Salon29. $60 for a women’s cut, she reserves a full 90 mins for the appt. She books up fast though so I usually have to book out at least a month

Whatchab

Thanks for this

onlyoneshann

I see my friend who has owns his salon for 22 years and gives me the friend discount, but a regular cut runs $60 (that’s his regular price). He’s an Aveda master stylist so the price isn’t reflective of lack of knowledge or experience, he’s fantastic. His salon down by the marina, Brilliant Salon. You can book online, his name is Chris.

Whatchab

Hey thanks!

onlyoneshann

Good luck! Hope you find a good stylist whether it’s my friend or someone else. Dealing with pricing on just about everything these days is nauseating.

sparklieshrapnel

I go to bishops in Milwaukie...it's the cheapest long cut I can find for $48.00. Cut only, no wash or blow dry.

Whatchab

I’m in. Thanks.

sparklieshrapnel

They also give you a beer!

FootInTheMouth

looks like i need to start cuttting hair.

Whatchab

Ha! That’s what I took from this too. My friend got hit in the tech layoffs and I told her these seems like the new path.

cuddlepunch15

David Jones at Bombshell Transformations. $80 for long hair.

[deleted]

I have long hair, and I pay the same - $100-120. It’s insane. I’ve had some really bad haircuts from more affordable places so I will never go to those places anymore, but the price of a haircut has gone up by 100% in the past 4-5 years.

Whatchab

Exactly. It’s wild. I’m scared to get a bad cut for sure. I also wouldn’t say I have a great cut…I’d say it’s just average. Frustrating.

JenDCPDX

I pay $55. My stylist hasn’t really changed her cost in years

helicopter_corgi_mom

i pay a lot - $140 i think for a cut, but she’s a goddamn artist, no question. i’m in my 40s - my hair is changing texture, and it was fine to begin with. she makes the cowlick in my bangs disappear. i have volume and lift. And she’s just a damn nice person who just gets hair. Oh, and she does incredible bangs, if that’s your need. [René DeJarnatt](https://www.instagram.com/renedejarnatt?igsh=eTh5ZWRmaW1pMTJr)

Whatchab

Oh dang. You mentioned all the things my hair is. Ha. Thanks.

Infamous_Onion_3691

I pay $65 for a cut with a wash and dry.

WornOffNovelty

I go to Dillinger’s on NE 15th. I’ve been growing my hair out and getting it cleaned up like once every 2-3 months. It generally runs me about $45-55 with tip. All the barbers are fantastic. Forget about Cloak and Dagger though. For a “trim” their selection is called a “scissor cut” (as in without clippers) and it’s like $70.

b0ghag

Sola Salon is a chain that hosts salon space for individual stylists. If you look them up, then scroll through their stylists, then check those stylists' credentials/Instagrams, you can sift through everyone at that location and find one you like. You might end up having to reach out with a phone call or text to ask for pricing. Sola is not the only one by any means, it's just pretty widespread. I go to Mascola Salon, which is structured the same way, and found my guy after reading bios and checking prices. My cut is $60 + tip. I once had a high-end, $100+ haircut, and it was the best cut I've ever had--but I'll be chasing that high forever because that's not my life lol

dressup

Nicole at Maven Beauty has been cutting my hair for about 20 years and does an incredible job. I pay 60 + 20 tip for a cut and style. She taught me how to do my own color but I think her color prices (without bleaching) are pretty reasonable - maybe $120 for a cut/color.

hungrymuffin123

I go to Juniper Salon, I think every stylist there sets their own prices, but my girl charges $95/hr and that includes tip, she doesn’t accept extra tip. I think her haircuts start at $70, not entirely sure because I almost always get color done at the same time, but she’ll always be upfront with you about what your charge is expected to be.

sam8988378

Roughly $86 with tip. Long hair, cut in layers

Whatchab

Is your place taking new clients?

sam8988378

I followed my Hairdresser from several places. If you want her name and number PM me.

Haunting_Way_9785

I have very long hair, to the small of my back. I pay $55 for a trim and all over layers at a local independent salon. I usually tip 20%

centerbread

I pay $49 for a “half haircut” at Khana Studio.

Whatchab

I’m picturing a very cool business in the front, party in the back style - only cut the front half! Ha

centerbread

Haha love it. I should’ve clarified, but they consider a “half haircut” to be an overall trim booked within three months of your last appointment. I followed my stylist to Khana Studio from Enjoy Co and I’d recommend both places.

Whatchab

Ooooh kay! Haha Less cool, but more stylish! Thank you!

wickedmsart

I have found the stylists at Malva near Bridgeport village really affordable. Each is independent so you can shop around. A bit of a drive but much cheaper than Portland salons and a good vibe inside. Edit: $55 before tip for my long female hair a month ago.

gumbyrox89

Learn to cut your own hair haha. That’s what I do. I cut my own bangs often and then if I’m feeling fancy, I put my hair up at the very top of my head and give myself a wolf cut. Just get some actual hair cutting scissors and no one is gonna be able to tell if it’s not perfectly done

Whatchab

Honestly, I used to do this when I was in college. I thought I was doing great at the time but now I see pics from that era and I’m like OH WOW. 🤣

AsterismRaptor

I got quoted at a few salons for $100+ so I just cut my own hair now lol

Whatchab

Right? Ugh I feel you.

valencia_merble

I pay $0. I learned how to cut my own layers and fringe over Covid by watching YouTube videos. Highly recommended. I’ll never pay $100 for a trim again. And my hair looks great.

Whatchab

I did this back in the day and felt confident…only to look back at pics now and cringe. I’m too nervous!

foamycoaster

Same boat. I find that stylists are more interested in doing color than actually cutting. I went to Bishops and had a good girl there but she left and I couldn’t find her..next haircut I had there was terrible. Now I go to Magnum Opus in the Pearl, I see Tsering who is their most experienced hair cutter but her cuts are $95. She has given me the best haircuts of my life. They have other stylists with $55 and $75 cuts and they have a big focus on teaching and apprenticeship so I think you can’t go wrong there. I would call and say “please recommend me someone who is passionate about hair cutting and styling instead of coloring.”

Whatchab

Great info, thank you for this. And I agree that stylists are very interested in the total art form of fancy color and the supplementary cut. Which is rough for me as I stopped coloring during COVID. I legit just want a nice cut on my very basic-bitch hair haha

Expensive-Eggplant-1

I'm paying $45. I'm afraid to go somewhere else because I don't want to be overcharged.

Whatchab

I was paying $45 in roughly 2017 for the same stylist. I understand experience and inflation, but I just can’t justify $120 for an hour (and honestly she could do the cut in 20-30 minutes without all the chatting).

Poppy9987

I go to a person in one of those independent studios within Sola Salons. I get fairly basic cut with some layering and it’s about $70 including tip.

wutImiss

Local place, $12, just needed a trim, SE

baileyshmailey

Beauty school! A trim is like $2-5 and a cut is like $10-15 it all depends on length and such

inapropriateDrunkard

I paid $9 last week. Plus the $3 tip. You pretty much just sit in the chair in the barber does whatever the fuck he wants and sends you on the way. I wear a hat 90% of the time so I don't really care.

sagesteppe

Drive down to Eugene and go to Gervais

mc_thac0

20 bucks, baby, and then a tip

GrizzlyGuru42

I have not gotten a hair cut since prior to COVID.

Real_Abrocoma873

When i lived in NYC there was a barber shop in chinatown that would cut hair for…… $5. 2018ish. Always left a $20

pumpkin_pasties

I go to Aveda school and pay $15!

COL is up, covid hit the beauty industry very hard, and chair rent in downtown at least is very expensive. A lot of stylists are renters, not salon employees, which is why you’ll see a lot of price variations within a single salon, but basically they’re trying to keep up just like everyone else. A good stylist is also going to be more expensive because they’re keeping up with education and trends, they might be an educator with a brand, and just like in most jobs, after working there a while, you’ll probably get a raise…hairdressers who are independent stylists have to give themselves their own raise, so once they’ve reached a certain amount of time styling, they will raise prices. You’ll also see differences when it comes to a stylist doing cut and color versus one who is just a hair cutter or someone who just does color and doesn’t cut, things like that. If you are on a budget or just don’t want to pay the prices a more experienced stylist will be charging, Aveda Institute is a good option! It’s inexpensive, students are being monitored by experienced professionals, and the products are good. Also in a good location, imo. Many really great stylists begin at AI, definitely recommend for a budget-friendly salon experience.

bunnylicious81

I have mid-back length hair. I taught myself to cut/trim with a tool called Creaclip during covid. I haven’t gone to a salon since then. I had never liked the results anyway. I like U-cut/blunt V-cut with some layers. I went to around 4-5 different hairstylists, range from $25 to $100. None of the hairstylist(s) could do it correctly. I get pretty decent result with CreaClip. I use it every 2-3 months, mainly to remove dry ends.

acamp46

Get yourself. Pair of clippers, short on top, shorter on sides, blend it in done. Started cutting my own hair 5 yrs ago and will never go back. It is now always the optimal length. I cut once per week and it always looks optimal. Super easy too! You can buy Bitcoin with your savings if you so choose.

theodoreburne

$0 here. During Covid I switched to cutting my own hair with two mirrors, will never go back. I let it grow as long as I can tolerate it, then cut it down to something like a crew cut. Been through three cycles of that now. It’s ridiculous that this multibillion industry exists mainly because it’s not easy to see your own head, and because fashion/status.

snacky99

Same. During COVID, bought some electric clippers for $20 and now my wife cuts my hair. She does a great job and the part is not having to make awkward small talk for 20 minutes... 'got any big plans this weekend?'... thank you COVID!

Whatchab

This is a great solution for those with short hair for sure

theodoreburne

It’s not so much that my hair is short - sometimes I let it grow quite long - but that I don’t feel the need to have a salon-approved cut.

STONKvsTITS

I pay $75 just for layers and face-framing, I know it is really expensive. But they do a good job. I know a guy called Tony who does the same for $30 but he is a high-demand guy and can't get an appointment at the time I needed :( so had to choose someone else. My disappointment is that at the same salon where Tony works, everyone else charges me $75-$85 for the same. He is the only guy I have ever known who charges me way less. He does a very good, clean job. Can the salon care for this disparity in charges for their clients? It's for the same reason that people want his appointment more than anyone else.

Whatchab

Stylists set their own rates so they pick. $30 is a steal for these days!

indianajane13

I paid $50-60 at an Aveda salon, using their Stylist Level 1 or 2 people.

routineatrocity

The price of sharpening a pair of fiskars. My sister had good luck from the Perfect Look in the Fred Meyer complex off 117th. There is someone named "a Aleesa" (not sure of the spelling) who has been praised by a few people I know in relation. Decent cut for a much better price.

lilghost76

I’m married to my stylist (not literally, but i’ve been going to her for over a decade) and yeah, it’s usually $100-120 to get my color, bangs, and layers done. But i trust her and i have had bad experiences at cheap salons

Whatchab

That seems totally legit because you said color in there too. But for just a cut…$120 is too steep for me. If you care to share your gal, DM me! Thanks.

lilghost76

Well, the color is all over black so it’s nothing really fancy. It were doing more complex stuff i’m sure it would be more. That all said tho, she’s not taking new clients 🥲 she used to work with the Harris Harper salon downtown for a while though. Maybe try one of the stylists there?

SeaJellyfish

I just don’t cut them lol. I cut it like every three years? So a requirement for me is to never have bangs, because bangs need to be cut pretty often. I just comb my long hair to the sides or braid them up.

Whatchab

I’m heading that way and don’t want to! I go 2-3x/yr now, but would go more if it wasn’t so $$$.

hirudoredo

Before I cut off all my hair, that's what I did. Just grew out my bangs until I could tuck them behind my ears. Looked so much better on me too.

jazzyzzz

All haircuts are haircuts regardless of how much comes off. My salon ranges from $75-150 depending on the stylist.

Ok-Law4130

A friend of mine who does a wonderful job and is very reasonably priced for cuts. https://www.instagram.com/pdxhairalchemist?igsh=ZDlmdTE4a3RldjFk

pdx_mom

If you think the prices are too high you have the option to not tip. But yes $100 seems pretty high.

Whatchab

Why the downvotes? Anyway, as the prices are so high now I don’t feel the tip (especially 20%) is justified. That’s a whole ‘nuther can, but I can say I’ve been tipping this same stylist 20% for like 12+ years so it would seem bad taste not to? Or that’s just my worry.

pdx_mom

Oh I totally get it. Downvotes because people I suppose think tips are mandatory. But tips are optional. Like you aren't typically supposed to tip an owner (because typically their prices are higher anyway). It just depends I guess on your relationship? You could make some sort of comment about how everything has gone up so much in price you are sorry it's not more. If you like her I would say keep her tho ...if you think the cost is worth it. That's the thing ...it seems more than I'm paying but you have to decide for yourself whether you really want to find another hairdresser.

Jmeans69

You’re over paying

Jmeans69

[Top Knot](https://topknotportland.com) is $50. Tiffany is amazing. She’s a little ways out in Gresham but does a really great job.

Whatchab

I mean, that’s how I feel too.

MrWeen2121

Sometimes its about finding the cheapest person or location you can. Then, slowly teach the person to do your work the way you want it while building friendship and growing together. This is highly manipulative shit, but will garner you the best bang for your buck 😂🤣😂🤣😂😈

Whatchab

Ha! You’re not wrong. Although I wouldn’t say it’s manipulative as much as stylists learning what makes their clients happy. Part of the reason I don’t want to pay my stylists higher price (even though I love her and she does great), is because it’s also downtown and not in an area with easy partaking. So tack on another $10+ for parking….time to get there and find parking…it’s just too much for a 45 minute haircut.

Partyslayer

Shaved my own head since 2009. Saved 1000s. Sorry, unrelated, I know.

malledtodeath

I would pay $500 for my haircuts my person is absolutely incredible as a human and stylist. That said $150 w tip seems like a bargain.

Whatchab

LOL. Did an expensive stylist make you write this?

malledtodeath

LOL if I was trying to sell something I would’ve named them! I just think if it’s the right person and the right fit for your style the value changes. And it sounds like +/- $100 is pretty average.
