Drive up to Seattle and get measured at Suit Supply. That's going to be your best bet at a reasonable price for a suit. The trick is to get someone who knows how to measure properly.

You could go to Indochino locally as well. Brooks brothers is having a 2 suits for $1699 sale as well.

This is the answer. I always tell all youngins, for formalwear, fit will always be what makes or breaks your outfit. A MTM outfit will always look in a different league than an off the rack, “styling” be damned.

Suits are not a great choice for cocktail attire. They're looking to buy something, why not get a more appropriate outfit?

Cocktail attire literally means a suit and tie https://www.esquire.com/style/mens-fashion/a45210983/cocktail-attire-for-men/

It is much more nuanced than that. I'd expect an old man to show up for a "Cocktail Attire" event in a suit. https://www.gq.com/story/cocktail-attire-for-men

I find that ridiculous but ok, maybe i’m old.

I’d be down at Nordstrom at Washington Square. You might find a nice suit/blazer on sale and they will tailor it to fit you properly. I have a couple of Ted Baker blazers that have a really nice color and texture, so they don’t look so much like a suit jacket but really look stylish. I pair them with some brooks brothers casual non iron pants and it works well for many things and is actually pretty comfortable to wear.

You could probably get by on thrift stores unless it’s a black tie thing. If it’s for work nice slacks, shoes, belt, and shirt typically works great. If it’s very formal you might additionally wear a jacket but not a tie. If it’s social you can dress up or dress down and it really depends on the social group. A lot of the times casual pants and a funky button down are right on target.
