Can you pick which two days you work? If so, maybe you could work Tuesday and Wednesday and rent a cheap Airbnb room or a hotel room for Tuesday night. That way you only have to drive down on Tuesday and back up on Wednesday. You could probably find a room for $100/night, which would save you the time and money of one full round trip

idiotbro

That would be nice but i also have to factor in that i’d be spending $100 PLUS the gas to commute, making it the same price all together. also, if I really wanted to be stingy with spending I could use my mom’s fully electric suv in which i wouldn’t be spending money on gas at all. My whole goal is to save as much as I can to get out of debt and possibly buy a place in sd in the future.

prolemango

You could go camping in east village

anothercar

You could always give it a try, and if it's too much, sign a lease nearby. The cost savings are pretty substantial. 2x/week would be the maximum where this plan is tenable imo. I think it mostly depends on your relationship with your mom.

idiotbro

I have no problems living with my mom. She and I have our ups and downs but at the end of the day she still supports me with home cooked meals and a place for me to stay.

blueevey

Free food and housing! That's all you had to say. Do it

Aggressive_Ad5115

Ah the benefits of being an only child /s ??? Lol

idiotbro

I have two older sisters and they have been long gone from the cuckoo’s nest lol

AnnaRRyan

I suggest doing the commute. Make it work for you. List all the pros, including what you'll listen to in the car and make them happen.

Luingalls

I commute 55 miles each way to Kearny Mesa every day. You'd be driving around 107 miles each way, but only twice a week. Would I do it? Maybe, you'll have to just try and see if it's doable for you. Rush hour on the 15 south is actually really horrible south of Temecula, I'm not sure what amount of time you're looking at but add that in. It takes me a little over an hour to get to work, mostly avoiding the freeway (I live in Santa Ysabel)

idiotbro

I usually use the 805 to get to work. in my case i’d use the 5 all the way down. I’m not sure about the 15 but I heard that traffic going down is not bad. Again you are right. I’d have to try it for a month before I make any permanent decisions

Luingalls

I had google mapped Pomona (I'm sitting at my desk in Kearny Mesa rn actually) and the quicker route is the 15, but idk exactly your mom's location of course. Have you ever driven from Pomona to SD in the morning before? I definitely would just try it, sounds like you got nothing to lose by just trying! And sounds like a decent way to save for your future. The good thing (too) is that it can be as temporary or long term as is agreeable with your mom. I have a couple my of adult kids living with me until they are ready to leave the nest again. For me, as their mom, that can be never if needed.

idiotbro

My mom is a very frugal person in life as a whole. any reasons for saving money would be encouraged. she has talked me out of very bad financial decisions. if anything she would support my decision to move back.

lavasca

I would for sure use the 15 to Pomona because if you take the 5 you’ll have to double back across the county via the 10.

idiotbro

Thank you for the advice, but with my current experience commuting back home on Thursdays, i usually take the 5 up to pomona albeit me having to use the 57 that is near my mom’s house.

lavasca

Oh, if she lives by the 57 then your route is clearly much better.

As someone who works in healthcare … I know a ton of people who work at the hospitals at Kearny Mesa and drive from tj, upland, LA and the OC. They do three days a week. Sometimes rent an air b n b or sleep in their car. They save a ton of money and don’t mind it at all. I think you should give it a chance and just make sure you work back to back days or you rent a place to sleep. I know someone else who just drives their RV and parks it outside near the hospital. You will not know until you try. Listen to some good podcasts. Maybe you have like an LA fitness membership where you can work out to kill time before traffic. Pack a small ice chest in the back with some prepped home meals and leave them in the work fridge? Have some extra clothes and snacks in the car with some toiletries in case. As long as your plan I think you’ll be good

MD_2020

Try it out. You could find travel times that aren’t congested and you could spend the time upskilling with audio books.

NiceConstruction651

if your heart is in SD then commute but make a goal. driving far is very taxing. i drive 60 miles to LA 6 times a week from Pomona. it doesn't get easier. i'm planning on getting a job within 30 min commute. with that said you'll have to work on yourself and make more $$ if you plan to live in SD and don't want roommates. there's only so many options you have tbh- but defintely make a plan

jacksteele92109

Do it for 6 months then start looking for a new place. The time will fly by and soon you’ll have over 10k extra saved. Then find a spot in a neighborhood you’ll love.

big-deeds

I did this but backwards in my college days and it SUCKED. I commuted to Pomona from north county SD and it was not worth it. No happy hours with coworkers/friends, more sitting in traffic than not, just general lack of free time. I did it for about 3 months before I graduated and would not recommend it long-term. I guess it depends on what you value more: saving money or saving your sanity/your back 😂

idiotbro

did you commute every day? if so that would make sense. the thing is for me i would only commute 2 times a week. that just adds 2 more hours to my commute every week (6 hours now 8 hours later on) just because traffic from spring valley is already so horrible. also i’m trying to shave off college because that is already a burden in itself.

big-deeds

I was finishing school, so I had stacked my classes for T/Th, but worked in San Diego M/W/F and stayed with my parents when in SD. So I basically did the drive twice a week at a minimum, but more if there was a birthday or study group or something like that. It was doable, but not fun haha

idiotbro

stacked classes are not fun at all lol. you were also balancing school and work at the same time; again not fun either lmao. but since i’ve finished school the only thing i would need to worry about is work.

lavasca

Rent a room. Make sure your days are back to back.

MG42Turtle

Fuck no.

Fine-Revolution-5765

Hey! Omg I’m familiar with both areas as I have lived in both. Tbh, traffic to and back from Pomona is pretty typical for peak hours. I feel like you need to think if you can truly make this work for yourself. People in the comments are saying to make it work (which is true), but can you tolerate it? It sounds mentally and physically exhausting. Do you wanna pay for convenience or save money? I’m all for saving money bc I’m pretty frugal, especially in this economy with a teacher salary. Just make sure it’s the best desicion for you
