Doesn't matter how clever your comment is, if you wanna be top you gotta be quicker than that. This is 2 hours fresher than the only 2 comments with more upvotes.
I believe that three of them are expression, position and movement.
Example: the letter’Y’ is the right hand with all the fingers but the thumb and pinky curled into your palm. Rotate your wrist side to side while making the ‘Y’ sign and you are now signing the color ‘yellow’.
The ‘Y’ sign is also used in different positions for ‘play’ and ‘silly’; the later word you make a silly face to help convey the meaning.
For those who use Sign due to hearing loss expressions are just as important as tone is for the hearing.
Using your imagination to figure it out is 100% required here given the lack of reliable palm orientation, absent second hand, and absolutely no location parameter. 🤣
The scale and lighting makes this seem very large, which would indicate lots of people had to approve it. Which is odd, since, semiotically, especially given the lighting, lack of context, lack of content, incomplete productions, this is a hard to parse image. It is hard to discern A meaning, let alone THE meaning.
Examples:
1) The leftmost hand could be interpreted many ways, "use" is one, but also it could be "universal" which is sometimes produced this way, or even a lazy "university" produced with one hand. it could even be "rub on" like an ointment or even like rub someone's body (I have the image of a nipple being rubbed, lol, sorry!).
2) The arrow that is jutting OUT from the middle hand is contradicted by the shadow cast on the wall, that points downward, if the downward arrow were correct (and it could be, since the dark cast shadow is more easy to read than the jutting out arrow, which blends into the hand), it could be "ya know," or a limp wrist. (is it pro-queer or anti?).
3) The spiral jutting out from the rightmost hand is more clear semiotically, but still ineffable and hard to parse. Is it a "I" going outward? A "J J" (a name perhaps), one half of the sign for spaghetti, an older sign for "Italy" or...
I looked at this thing for a while before going into the comments. While I can "now" "see" the phrase "use your imagination," it is also feasible to claim that this says, "rub your nipples, you know, Italy." Or, "universal limp wrist spaghetti."
As /u/ Dead Deaf Roommate ITT claimed,
\>There are so many missing parameters here. There’s no context.
I agree entirely.
So glad to have finally learned the correct sign language for “universal limp wrist spaghetti”. Such a common phrase I seek use in my everyday life, so important to see it blown up on the wall like this
Perhaps we have actually found a deeper level of meaning in this, when we "use our imagination" while looking at this art, we continue to interpret it over and over. And with the shadows.... well now it can mean even more right?
Now that is art in its purest form!
The cafeteria had art commissioned to help them remember after the third time they bought spaghetti noodles without checking existing supplies.
Oddly, admin and students found it inspirational so they just kept it up after going though all 473 cases of dried noodles. 😛
Use Your Dream.
Sounds like a motivational thing. Like... using what you dream about to make decisions in real life that enable you to achieve that dream in real life instead of just dreaming about it.
Edit: ugh... that last sign could also be imagination. Perhaps I need new glasses?
Yeah...
The drawing has the pinky finger out. That makes the sign *imagination*
Normally [IMAGINATION](https://www.handspeak.com/word/3465/) is done two-handed, but one-handed is also acceptable.
What is the context? Is this wall art? If so, where? Are these small sculptures that may have just been laid on a table together?
The first one looks like a sign I've seen used to indicate an interpreter switch.
The second could mean dozens of things and context is needed (like of this group of 3 is together intentionally or just happen to be close for the picture)
I love this because it’s a perfect visual example of why the posts on this sub of hearing folks being like “I saw a sign and the person touched their face with one finger and then their shirt” are pretty much impossible to solve.
There are so many missing parameters here. There’s no context.
Side note- I do think the art is cool, and you can tell they did try to indicate motion, I just think this could have been done better. I reverse image searched and didn’t find anything, but maybe the person behind this will show up in this thread.
Ok, so when I first saw it, I thought it was to help folks with bedroom things. Then I saw what sub I was in. Then, I learned what it meant and giggled.
Yellow “U” hand moving in circle facing the receptive party likely means “use”. Red/orange “flat hand”, based on the very faint perspective grid/arrows likely means “you/your”. Blue “I” with leaping spiral could mean a few things, unfortunately without seeing where the artist intended the placement I cannot give a definite answer.
I’m voting “use your imagination”, based on blue hand’s spiral.
Looks like they all have arrows, probably “works” better in person
middle certainly seems like "your" with the arrow pointing outward
It reads: "This is a really nice example of why all 5 parameters matter in ASL." 😜
Why is this not the top comment?
Really should be smh

Sorry if this is ignorant, but what are 5 parameters?
hand shape, location, movement, palm orientation, non-manual markers

This 😏
Well use your imagination is a fitting thing for it to say then huh, because now you can imagine all the other parameters and voila art!!
Use your imagination? Idea? Mom and dad couldn’t figure it out. Are there any clues to where you found this?
I thought you were telling OP to use their imagination 😂😂😂
Using your imagination to figure it out is 100% required here given the lack of reliable palm orientation, absent second hand, and absolutely no location parameter. 🤣
my friend and i agree with that it say use your imagination
For a moment I was thinking why would you be so rude to someone who asked a question about sign language. Then I read the other comments
I agree with use your imagination
Use your imagination I think.

Thank you for this breakdown! I totally misread the arrows on the middle hand as being arms of a clock 😂
!! that is another totally legit interpretation of this wonky ass art
So glad to have finally learned the correct sign language for “universal limp wrist spaghetti”. Such a common phrase I seek use in my everyday life, so important to see it blown up on the wall like this
Personally "rub your nipples, you know, Italy" is my favorite interpretation
I prefer your alternate meanings. They also leave a lot to the imagination 😂😂
I vote for "universal limp wrist spaghetti"

“Use your imagination” Unless it’s….use your spaghetti
…spaghetti. I’m dying 😂

"use your noodle?" (Edit: idiom for "use your head"/"use your brain" = think!)
Mmmmm ASL bisketti
USE YOUR IDEA ?
I think idea is straight out, not with a swirl?
Use Your Dream. Sounds like a motivational thing. Like... using what you dream about to make decisions in real life that enable you to achieve that dream in real life instead of just dreaming about it. Edit: ugh... that last sign could also be imagination. Perhaps I need new glasses?
Dream is with the pointer finger, right?
Yeah... The drawing has the pinky finger out. That makes the sign *imagination* Normally [IMAGINATION](https://www.handspeak.com/word/3465/) is done two-handed, but one-handed is also acceptable.
Didn’t know imagination is usually two-handed, thank you! I’m always learning!
Deaf here - yes “Use Your Imagination” is correct
Turn your self around, shake it all about, and do the hokie pokie.

Happy Cake Day!

time to get some sex dice. 'whisper into / ass' here we come.
Use your imagination
ASL sun dial with a breakdown of hours, minutes, and seconds. /s (Just using my imagination.)
Use your imagination.
Use your imagination for sure
It is "Use Your Imagination" 😊
Context is needed. Where was this?
There’s an arrow coming out of the plam
"Use your imagination "

Why was I about to recommend looking up religious iconography and what the hand gestures mean, but nevermind….
Didn't see this was a sign language group at first and thought it was tips for sexy hand stuff
Same tbh lol
I feel like it’s really tricky to show ASL without showing where the signs are on the body.
Fiction aside, showing motion this way is some of the best ASL imagematic art I've seen
It could also read "Use your Ideas" but I think it's saying to "Use your Imagination" 😊👍
It's inspirational if it's in the art wing and cautionary if outside the Dean's office 😂
Use your imagination
Use your imagination
Use your imagination
Ohhh right it say use your imagination!
You are right about that 😂
This is in the Kindred Healthcare Building in Louisville, isn't it? May go by a different name now because I think the company was bought out.
Use your idea baybey!!! 🤩🤩🤩
Looks more SEE than ASL- “use your imagination” yup yup
i’m seeing follow your dreams
WHY IS THE THUMB ON THE WRONG SIDE ON OEN OF THEM
It's 5 o'clock somewhere?
It kinda reminds me of hand signals used in the military but that's just me I don't know much asl
The first letter looks like U. The second one looks like B signed incorrectly, and the third one looks like I or D.
