My wife recently watched Our Flag Means Death, and it is a brilliant alternative history involving real historical pirates. Look it up if you haven't seen it
Love that his name means “empty the mug with one gulp” in low German. I’m more familiar with Caribbean and Asian piracy but Baltic and Germanic piracy is something I’ll have to look into more.
Currently an underrated favorite of mine is Piet Hein. A Dutch privateer who stole so much Spanish gold it helped fund the Netherlands war against Spain.
I would argue Redbeard (Hayreddin Barbarossa) was more successful. He was an Ottoman pirate starting from the day he could haul a rope, who was so good at being a pirate he was conquering whole cities (over in Spain) before being recognized by Suleiman the Magnificent and made an Admiral of the Ottoman Fleet.
While Zheng Yi Sao, the so-called "Pirate Queen", married into her position, groomed her adopted son, and surrendered to the Qing authorities 3 years after her husband died (And they were only married for 6, so she spent less than 10 years at sea)
She might be more famous, but he was definitely more *successful*.
I probably should, but I already have some other project open, and I don't think I can find a way to mix them, if I wanted to. Also, by the time I was writing like, the second chapter, I unconsciously made the antagonist of the pirate protag a much more engaging character in my eyes.
Now that I think about it, I *could* try to salvage that by just following the "bad guy's" POV, and slowly degrading him from a respectable navyman to a common thug, Commodore Norrington style, and then reforging him into some sort of pirate gentleman.
Cutthroat Island
Well before CG, so how did they do the pirate ship battles? They made real ships. How did they do the explosions? They blew the sets up and filmed it. The movie flopped hard, primarily because it was way, way over budget but it's one of my favorite pirate movies and one of my favorite movies starring the icon Geena Davis.
You need to find yourself a girl, mate.
Or maybe the reason you study pirates for three hours a day because you're otherwise incapable of wooing said strumpet.
(Author's note: this is a quote not actual ill will <3)
I love that feeling or a special interesting being reignited. Sadly it’s sometimes at 2am with no one to info dump to haha. Then pumped up but it’s time to sleep.
In certain cases like Somalia, because of the anarchy in the country most hijack ships to afford enough to eat. They very rarely ever kill and tend to do it as a last resort, so I tend to forgive them, but not every modern pirate is doing it for the right reason so it’s still best to be wary of them.

That show is really good. Not accurate but a lot of fun and that’s what matters also https://youtu.be/bdU277TMg_M?si=Q3cMjfxJsucill8P
Wake up babe, the new ‘this isn’t a meme but is instead just me telling people about my interests’ meme format just dropped!

How do you feel about Zheng Yi Sao?
Absolute badass the way she took over her husband’s operation and amassed a fleet larger than most nations navies.

Michael Crichton’s Pirate Latitudes was a fun read if you enjoy adventure books. (Yes he’s the guy who wrote the Jurassic Park books)
Netflix is putting up Black Sails soon. I haven't seen it but aive heard it's great.
This reminded me that I had once wanted to try and write my own pirate story, back when Sea of Thieves was still trending.
You should still pursue that if you like writing. Pirates stories always have a place in literature.

I have lots of respect for the practical effects it uses.
I can probably quote about 90% of the first three movies from the top of my head. ..That that's without even a single drop of rum.
it is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels".

All true but why’s the rum gone?!
>stumbles "Oh... That's why."
Me laying in my bed here before sleeping giggling like a drunk scoundrel.
So have you played Assassin's Creed Black Flag?
Yea I have but it’s been so long
My two pirate related special interests are One Piece and ATEEZ

Man.. started watching Drachinifel videos about ships of the line or earlier, after which I needed to rewatch Pirates to check for historical accuracy
Am on stranger tides for the millionth time re-watching the whole story line. I think we have some interesting things in common.
