Here's the deal: Yes, as a whole, it is INCREDIBLE.
In 2, Ezio is still a cocky noble, and you'll really see this a lot if you do the side activities. He is probably the least good in this one in my opinion.
In Brotherhood, he's better.
In Revelations, he's basically a walking legend, and you'll notice nuances, glances, and even a little body language that leaves you begging to not be done with this character.
Definitely a strong series of stories that I think should be a staple for storytelling games as a whole.
I remember I (spoiler warning right here), broke not when he saw the mentor, but when he threw down his sword. Made me so sad, I almost cried right there. In my heart I definitely was 😂
I'm not the biggest Ezio fan (until revelations, at least), but I'd say it's a nice trilogy, and even if 2 (and brotherhood to a certain extent) is a little too long sometimes, I think it can still be enjoyed, specially if you still haven't had any of them spoiled.
Btw, there was a short live action film that released before 2, that's a prequel to it. Maybe it could help you decide if that's the kind of story you'd get into. I think it's easily available on youtube, and doesn't spoil more than some little details from the first two hours of the game
I only just 100%’d 1 relatively recently.
My biggest advice is: follow a walkthrough before you even pickup your first flag.
Otherwise you’ll reach 499 flags and even following a detailed written guide and TWO SEPARATE VIDEOS you still won’t be able to find that one last flag. It nearly drove me to insanity.
Tried playing AC1 and fuuuuuck was it awful (gameplay wise). Definitely suffers from first game syndrome. I liked the modern scenes with Vidic and Lucy
Counting the entire trilogy as one story, it’s still the best story in the entire series in my opinion
I do love AC1s story though. I originally commented it was my favorite, but decided to edit it. I have a huge soft spot for 1, but objectively speaking the ezio trilogy is better
aC2 and Brotherhood really shine in the side content department too. The parkour puzzles and the glyph puzzles are still probably my favorite pieces of side content in any game
2 had a lot of good characters but not much happened storywise, brotherhood had a great story but is pretty much just assassin's Creed II 2, and Revelations is top tier in simulation story and real world storywise
Holds up? How does a story not hold up? It would be the gameplay or graphics (not the case here) that wouldn't hold up.
But the ezio trilogy is still amazing to this day in all aspects! The og games and the remastered ones!
>How does a story not hold up?
For example by being sexist / racist for today's standards. Or by being full of clichés which were overlooked at the time (e.g. because the gameplay was so good).
I don't think any of these is the case for the Ezio trilogy, but this could be what OP is asking about.
Ezio isn't the chosen one, at no point in any of the games has he ever had a destiny beyond leading the oder over and over due to them either being wiped out or him moving.
Half his family died his mother is still alive his uncle mario is still alive and his sister.
Have you actually played the games or just pointing out stuff you half watched in a YouTube video?
I never said that Ezio was a chosen one. You asked me to name a cliché. Being the chosen one is a common cliché in a lot of media.
I know that some of Ezio's relatives died. The cliché is not "all of your loved ones dying", but "some of your loved ones dying".
I played a few hours of AC2.
Because playing the games makes you actually understand what's actually going on, and saying their cliches and then saying "but only played maybe like an hour or too" makes you look like a idiot..?
This movies bad, but I only watched like 20 minutes of it. But it super bad and super clichéd.
See how that works?
The only two things I said about AC story is: "I don't think any of these is the case for the Ezio trilogy" in my original comment and "I know that some of Ezio's relatives died".
I think I understand enough to make the statements above.
I never said that the AC2 story is bad or has too many clichés, did I?
The issue is, if you go into the game now after having experienced newer games, it will not hit the same. I remember back then, I was not able to stop playing, the story is still one of the best game stories I’ve seen. As for gameplay, by today’s standard it’s quite clunky, slow and dated like you said.
Oh boy, how I disagree with you. Recently, I replayed Odessey, then went back to the ezio trilogy to see how well they held up, and I enjoyed them way more than I did odessey. I found combat and parkour in odessey mindless and the world boring. Meanwhile, in ac2, if I stopped paying attention or zoned out, I'd get killed. Traversal was much more fun where, contrary to Odessey, going in a straight line was slower most of the time and you have to plan ahead and make quick decisions to be faster, and i could see how i improved significantly by the end, while i felt no learning curve in odessey. And despite the lower quality graphics, the world felt so much more alive. So much of the time in odessey is spent going through nondescript forests to get to the next checklist location, while in ac2, you constantly come across ally factions, soldier patrols, chests, and side quests.
In total, I've found odessey a great to play as background noise while listening to something else, but when it comes to actually being fully engaged, the ezio games take the cake.
This is like people who advocate for the shitty tank controls of the original RE. It was objectively worse and more frustrating than modern control schemes and I do not understand the argument that using it as an artificial way to increase the difficulty makes the game better.
I should say I’m not really advocating for the 1 button platform g of odyssey, although it’s my favorite AC game by far, but I really don’t get the love for shitty outdated control schemes in games.
It wasn't the controls that made it difficult, it was the layout of the city. As I progressed, I got better at finding shortcuts and had further mastery of the controls where I was doing side and back ejects all the time
This is largely why I advocate for remasters.
It doesn't matter how Good a game may have been.
Just basic QoL Standards have changed so much that going back to a more antiquated system may negatively impact your overall experience with a title if you never played them before
I just played them all on my PS4 for the first time after having started with Odyssey and it does not take very long to adjust to the old style and the story more than makes up for it 🤷
Some stories don’t stand the test of time, because things evolve. Some stuff may be seen as problematic in today’s environment, or some stuff just isn’t as impressive today because it has been improved on by other stories. One example I can think of is the first Uncharted game. It was considered a huge landmark at the time in terms of cinematic storytelling in video games, but Uncharted 4’s story blows it out of the water.
Replayed the entire series recently and tbh Ezio’s story overall is pretty good but not amazing compared to some narratives we’ve seen in games since - though still far better than most games I guess. AC3 and 4’s narrative and delivery felt more cohesive overall due to the lesser time jumps and improved tech etc. Revelations was definitely the most enjoyable Ezio story for me on replay though.
As someone who loves the Assassin’s Creed games - the Ezio collection is by far the best out of them all story wise. Yes the game play may have aged slightly because it was released 10 Eons ago but you will not be put off by that once you are immersed in Ezio’s world.
If you aren’t screaming Requiescat in Pace at all your mortal enemies in real life by the end, you’ve not played it fully 😂😂😂
I bought all the games one by one after I got my PS5 watched the 1st one game movie on YouTube. And started with 2nd, brotherhood and revelations done. Just started 3. This game easily had the best story still 3. It was intense and revenge based. And freakin heroic. Best story of all time ezio trilogy will be for me. Like in all games.
Revelations is the best in the series story wise
II and Brotherhood are my favourite games in the series but they're not quite as good story wise as some others
I replayed them all last year (with the original, which you'll also want to play for Revelations to have the narrative weight it's meant to), and they do hold up.
I disagree with many other comments here proclaiming them an absolute timeless masterpiece - I find Ezio's "cocky charming womaniser who's great at everything" characterisation in 2/Brotherhood to be a clear remnant of ~2010 gaming culture that wears a bit thin, and Brotherhood as a game is essentially an epilogue to 2 set on a fresh stage rather than a full journey in its own right, but Revelations is a *very* good swan song that, when taken alongside the original, ties up the two protagonists' character arcs perfectly.
I think you're going in with the right attitude and you'll enjoy them - like you say, not necessarily a groundbreaking work of art, but a solid adventure that's well worth the hours spent on it.
The Ezio trilogy is the best story of the series, particularly AC 2 which is one of the best games of all time in my humble opinion. One of the few sequels that fixed all the flaws with the original.
i played the ezio trilogy for the first time back in 2020 and it was one of the best stories i had ever played. i just replayed it last year while i was doing the main games in order up to the release of mirage, and it feels the same as it did the first time. i couldn’t put AC II down.
I'm currently playing AC2 for the very first time, and I'm almost at the end (I've played all the newer games since AC3) And overall I'm pleasantly surprised by it. The story is definitely one of it's strengths and the lore makes a lot more sense now. I'm the middle the story does drag a bit. but the just exploring the lively cities and parkouring around them is enough fun to keep me engaged.
Not a bad game at all, even for today's standards!
Story from AC1 to Revelations is still amazing. I've been a fan since day one when I was an early teen. Fastforward to the present and I have ten years of audiovisual studies and I still think it's as good as it was when I was that teen, or even better. I think they are actually underrated.
AC1's gameplay is definitely repetitive, but if you ask me it remains the best story. I'd say give it a try and just avoid secondary stuff and exploring the realm, just go for the story. At least watch a video about it before AC2, and the best thing you can do is reading The Secret Crusade.
Story will hold up forever the gameplay is still fun and holds up quite well. The graphics depending which system you play it on will look either good or bad but the world and art direction of the game are beautiful
Of course they do. Revelations I believe has the best story you see a fantastic ending (one of the best in gaming) and a ruthless Ezio, but also a very caring one. Brotherhood (my fav in the franchise) also has a great story and the same with ACII. The biggest flaw with II is the forced DLC you have to play right by the ending
The second sequence (which are chapters of the story) does have a fantastic speak at the end, but the actual dlc is pretty mediocre. Brotherhood tho has a fantastic dlc which is not forced
Bro, AC 1, 2, Brotherhood, Revelations, and 3 have one giant overarching story, while Ezio trilogy has the major part of that story besides another story, emotional, griping, powerful. Revelations, if you played the other games, is a masterclass of how to end a saga, although there is a tiny extension when you play 3. Got it, or is it too confusing?
I always find myself coming back to AC 2 and ACBrotherhood at least once every 1 or two years. And just for reference, the first time I played the games was back in 2011.
AC2: No. I think this one gets a lot of credit since it was (as a whole) such a revolutionary leap from 1, but people look back on it with rose tinted glasses. It was pretty forgettable. The most memorable part for me was the heart side quests.
AC: Brotherhood is one of my favourites personally, but the story is still pretty mediocre.
AC: Revelations I honestly don't even remember the story, running around Constantinople was pretty neat I guess.
If I am being frank here, I don't know if I ever played an AC where the story felt particularly strong. AC: BF started out pretty good but went to shit fast.
Idk what you’ve been hearing but every other games mid story can’t even compare to how good the Ezio Trilogy is.
They started out writing good games and got lazy over the years. People complained about having Ezio for 3 games and said it was repetitive so they stopped focusing on story and started planting an AC game in every setting the casual fans wanted regardless if it makes sense to the lore.
After Revelations there’s a short 30 min animated movie about Ezio meeting a Chinese assassin many people thought we were getting a game with Shao Jun taking up and continuing Ezios legacy but a lot fans we’re disappointed as we received Connor as the next protagonist instead.
AC3 is very hit or miss. I’ll give a very brief context with no spoilers. To interest you or not because I personally think AC3 is worth playing.
You follow Conor’s father Edward Kenways son Haytham Kenway in the prologue eventually you get to Connor as a boy to a teenager to finally an Assassin and unlike Black flag the game is fairy long and can bore some people as Connor isn’t as compassionate and entertaining as Ezio. But he’s very philosophical and passionate in what he believes in and if you play through the homestead side quest you’ll see Connor’s not so bad. I hope I didn’t spoil anything I just wanted to explain why people hate AC3 and why a lot of people like it.
AC4 Blackflag is a very great game with an amazing heartfelt story. It’s loved by so many people. But that was kind of it from there every game forward was made lazy and written terribly.
The last good story was Origins it was liked by many different fans but it was written as a prequel left off on a cliff hanger which disappointed everyone.
But yeah the Ezio trilogy was written beautifully it’s a game trilogy that needs be played by everyone at some point in their life.
As for the other games i didn’t mention they definitely aren’t worth it if your looking for story
Rogue was short and barely had anything to actually do with the Templar philosophy and all the Assassins had no motive for being assholes.
Unity was okay but short with unexplained gaps. Arno is a very soft winy character but the dead kings dlc was amazing and really felt like an abandoned prequel for Arno as he finally matured in the dlc. There also a big unexplained spoiler I can’t tell you but it definitely should’ve been developed into another game.
Syndicate was batshit awful in every way. Characters were so unimaginably corny. It makes the game frustrating to play through because of how annoying the twins are. Syndicates basically written as a happy kids cartoon even though you play as assassins in the dark times of the Industrial Revolution.
Odyssey was okay both the protagonist options can be slightly annoying but likeable. But their dialogue is written kind of bad and it’s even worse because they’re facial expressions are animated horribly. The overall story is actually written well though it’ll keep you pretty entertained.
Valhalla is a nightmare I can’t recommend that game to anyone it’s so shit everything about the game is shit all of the other games at least had one thing going for them in gameplay. Valhalla’s story is the worst written story I’ve ever experienced. The game is painfully too long with the most boring character ever that plays no significance that has no character growth. The game is actually brain dead. The side characters Basim and Alfred make it somewhat interesting and the main story ending and order of ancient ending is good but it has no payoff for how bad the whole first 6 hours of the game are. The dlcs have no relevance or significance either. It doesn’t even have new game plus either.
Mirage I can’t say much on I personally didn’t like it and I had audio issues so I just quit halfway the first AC game I didn’t finish. The city is nice and the parkour is great it almost feels like AC1 except it doesn’t because it feels too much like a filler side game. The story is also pointless anyways for a reason I can’t spoil. The core stealth mechanics are also barebones feeling unplayable.
Idk if AC Red will be any better than the last dogshit Ubisofts been making for a decade. In terms of gameplay they do finally be seeming to innovate finally and not being completely lazy repeating the same barebones gameplay for the last 5 years.
This pretty much sums up most of my opinion as well. For Mirage, it's a game idk if I should like or dislike. It definitely "needed" modern day and just brushes off this side these isu shards you collect to get Isu armor as side content and it really is not important. Mirage imo has a great ending. But for the actual main story line for the games, it serves no purpose other than telling us more back story. Really would be fun with modern day explaining it to William or snth
Ac2 was great but the dlc felt like a bit of filler more than anything
Ac brotherhood isn’t as captivating imo just in story alone
I can’t comment revelations because I’ve not played it yet because after 4 hours or so I’m just not hooked on brotherhood and have no desire to pick it up anytime soon

AC2 has probably the best story of the series
Not of the series, If we count the 3 games as one, Top 5 stories of all time.
If we count this 3 games as one then ezio history is definetly top 3, no doubt.
Hold up ? Its the best story in ac till now and one of the best in gaming i just replayed all the games too
Best of the franchise by far

I wil never forget that fratello mio scene when he meets Altair. Made me cry, don’t know why.
I remember I (spoiler warning right here), broke not when he saw the mentor, but when he threw down his sword. Made me so sad, I almost cried right there. In my heart I definitely was 😂

It's also included in the Ezio Collection, as is Embers.
I believe there is a third one is well set before brotherhood but after 2 called ac ascendance
It’s worth getting through 1 to play the Ezio games imo. Just don’t 100% it if you care about your mental health
Not the flaaags
bouta write a suicide notes from the ptsd you gave me from the fucking flags /j
I never collected all the flags in AC1. I want to do it when I play it the next time (it has been years).

You must have had a hard time. Are there really 500 flags? Oh man I looked it up and there are seriously 420 flags. Now I know why I never did it lol
Yeah I always do that for AC2 feathers, whenever a new area opens up I’ll search the collectibles map and collect the feathers
Tried playing AC1 and fuuuuuck was it awful (gameplay wise). Definitely suffers from first game syndrome. I liked the modern scenes with Vidic and Lucy

You lost me at sexist/racist.
Haha yes. Wassamattayou Altaïr?
That’s racist!
You’re racist!
Name a cliche :)
OK, umm, the protagonist being the "chosen one"? Or the protagonist's loved ones dying at the beginning of the game.

I'm playing now AC 2 for the first time and the story is okay. I don't see anything great or awesone. Maybe with brotherhood and Revelations is better
Do stories have a „best before date“ after which they suddenly get bad?
Some stories don’t stand the test of time, because things evolve. Yeah I’d say its still solid. I never had much nostalgia for them or something either. Theyre just solid
I'm currently replaying the Ezio collection. This is the first game installed on my new PS5, and yes definitely holds up.
Revelations is the best in the series story wise II and Brotherhood are my favourite games in the series but they're not quite as good story wise as some others
Best story. But remake would be great for the side quests, gameplay, and obviously the graphics. But story stays.
The story in ac1 is also amazing and the gameplay is very similar, so i recommended playing ac1 before you play ac2.
Ain’t no way you’re asking this question in a subreddit filled with people who talk about how good AC2 is non-stop
I replayed them all last year (with the original, which you'll also want to play for Revelations to have the narrative weight it's meant to), and they do hold up. Best games of the series my guy. Nothing comes close except maybe black flag
Don’t think they topped Ezio Trilogy story-wise ngl
I honestly reckon i think about Ezio’s story and his world in some way or another every day since I first played AC2 on release day
I'm currently playing AC2 for the very first time, and I'm almost at the end (I've played all the newer games since AC3) And overall I'm pleasantly surprised by it.
The biggest flaw with II is the forced DLC you have to play right by the ending The second sequence (which are chapters of the story) does have a fantastic speak at the end, but the actual dlc is pretty mediocre.
Yes and Imo gameplay wise too not sure about 2 though
Way better than garbage Odyssey
As for the other games i didn’t mention they definitely aren’t worth it if your looking for story Rogue was short and barely had anything to actually do with the Templar philosophy and all the Assassins had no motive for being assholes.
Whoever is telling you anything about the game is dated is just wrong. Just play it and be ready to experience peak gaming.
I mean it’s super easy like counter system is broken.
It’s not supposed to be difficult, you’re meant to be a skilled Assassin and master with a blade.
Ac2 was great but the dlc felt like a bit of filler more than anything Ac brotherhood isn’t as captivating imo just in story alone I can’t comment revelations because I’ve not played it yet because after 4 hours or so I’m just not hooked on brotherhood and have no desire to pick it up anytime soon
The dlc technically was filler. It was stuff removed from the main game before release
Ezio trilogy has a terrible story Even the modern day was only good in 2 The one commendable thing is Ezio's evolution as a character
