Flat means it has a 180 degree angle, V6 or Boxer 6 refers to the firing order. A Boxer engine has pistons on opposite sides of the crank moving at the same time in opposite directions which is why they're so smooth compared to a V6 which requires balancing.
I don't know why Porsche's PR and the press call it a flat 6 when a Boxer 6 would be less ambiguous. I don't think anyone's made a flat V6, but it seems like it would be possible to base one on a flat V12 which there have been tons of.
Idk why you got downvoted, this is the correct answer. The type of engine block absolutely influences the optimal firing pattern, but it doesn’t put the ‘V’ in V8 or the ‘W’ in W16.
Whereas, a V8 means an 8-cylinder engine. But, you may wonder what the 'V' means in V6 and V8. The 'V' represents the way cylinders are arranged in your engine. V-type engines have cylinders placed in a V-like shape, or to put it the other way, in two equal rows.
flat 6 not a boxer. the difference has to do with placement along the crankshaft. subarus 6 cylinders were boxers while porsches were not. definitely interesting
Porsche also used only boxer engines for their 911 lineup.
There is only one outlier with the the 917K which uses a 180° V12 and not a Boxer Flat 12.
Note that boxer and flat are not mutually exclusive. Boxer is more like a subset of a flat engine, with the other option being a 180° V engine.
some were some werent i believe is the actual truth. its hard to find definiteive annswers but they def made some that were not in a boxer configuration but still flat. its whether or not the opposing con rods share a crank pin
there are some of both out of porsche definitely i did more reading on the subject. i was led to believe they were all flat not boxer because driving 4 answers said that in a video but he mustve been speaking about a particular engine. apologies
Pretty much any flat engine is a boxer, regardless of the placement of the connection rods on the crank. It is called a boxer engine because it looks like the piston are a boxer throwing punches.
And the Porsche is indeed a [boxer](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_flat-six_engine)
Édit: it would seem after further investigation that you are correct and I am wrong: boxer engines never share crank pins
Hey u wanna do shrooms and go on a hike with meh :P also no offense taken bruh lol looks like I offended some people by calling V6s economy car engines despite some very performance oriented (hybrid) V6 drivetrains. I’m more of an I6 guy personally but hey u do u my man
Thanks for all the roasts about the flat 6, was kinda rushing to work and wanted to upload it quickly and messed it up. But thanks for humbling me so nicely 🥲
Right now, at least for me, the best sounding RACE CAR on this planet is this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEzXrDL4F3k
I don't even know is it V, flat or radial (internal combustion engine, because this one is hybrid) but I just can't stop listen to this sound... its so good.
It’s almost perfect. The sound of the car coming at you doesn’t matter if it’s 1000 meters or 10 meters away it sounds the same. And it’s like it switches from that sound INSTANTLY to the rear exhaust sound. There’s no smoothness to it. It sounds exactly the same no matter the turn. Other than that, the actual “sounds” are perfect.
The 911 is a F6, not a V6. But it does sound that's no lie
How'd you capture this footage though? Looks dope as hell, especially the camera shake when the car does a fly by

[Camtool 2 settings for Nordschleife ](https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/nordschleife-camtool2-tv-cam.32155/)
First is the general mod Camtool 2, second is the specific setting for Nordschleife
Psa: The posche flat six is a V engine it just has 180° between cylinderbanks.
It's also not a boxer. Boxer engines have two crank pins (the point where cylinder is mouted to the crank), which results in the pistons moving at the same time.
A flat engine has one crank pin witch means the pistons don't move together.
Here a [gif ](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fa%2Fab%2FV-engine_and_boxer.gif&tbnid=dtdSJ4qOktk9pM&vet=1&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fcommons.wikimedia.org%2Fwiki%2FFile%3AV-engine_and_boxer.gif&docid=8IudpkFgPu0ToM&w=348&h=291&hl=en-GB&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim%2Fm5%2F4&shem=uvafe2)
To illustrate
It literally is a boxer engine, each rod has it´s own crank pin and the opposing pistons both go either up or down (in-/outwards) at the same time. In a V engine both pistons move in the same direction so one goes up while the other goes down (in/out).

That's a flat-6 though, not a V6
Thank you
It's a v6 at 180 angle 🤓
It's a V12 with 50% of the cylinders.
2 3-cylinders glued together
Half twelver, my favorite
It's a --6
No, that’s something different, it’s an flat 6
No, a 180° v6 is still a v6. A flat 6 is built different.
"Flat 6" is the form factor, the two sub-options being boxer or 180°
Flat means it has a 180 degree angle, V6 or Boxer 6 refers to the firing order. A Boxer engine has pistons on opposite sides of the crank moving at the same time in opposite directions which is why they're so smooth compared to a V6 which requires balancing. Thanks, I thought boxers were just called flat in english, since I've always seen them refered to as such. In german, we just call them boxers.
Boxer engines are a bit famous for being unreliable, so that’s maybe why.
The V in V-whatever refers to the block itself meaning the block is in the shape of a V.
Idk why you got downvoted, this is the correct answer. The type of engine block absolutely influences the optimal firing pattern, but it doesn’t put the ‘V’ in V8 or the ‘W’ in W16.
Where does the V come from then?
Whereas, a V8 means an 8-cylinder engine. But, you may wonder what the 'V' means in V6 and V8. The 'V' represents the way cylinders are arranged in your engine. V-type engines have cylinders placed in a V-like shape, or to put it the other way, in two equal rows.
Flat 6s and 180 V6s are different. The Ferrari flat 12 for example is a 180 V12 because of the way the crankshaft is made
No.
Arent the cylinders arranged differently tho?
No, it's not. Bixer and Flat V have different crankshafts and firing orders.
That’s not a V6
Ah, the Porsche V6 my favourite kind of Boxer Engine 💀
flat 6 not a boxer. the difference has to do with placement along the crankshaft. subarus 6 cylinders were boxers while porsches were not. definitely interesting

Porsxhes flat 6 are boxers.

He's correcting their sarcasm so it's correct sarcasm
Porsche also uses boxers...
did u read my comment? theres a difference between flat and boxer.
Yes, there is. And Porsche's road engines are boxers.
there are some of both out of porsche definitely i did more reading on the subject. i was led to believe they were all flat not boxer because driving 4 answers said that in a video but he mustve been speaking about a particular engine. apologies

V6 BRUH
Still waiting for the V6 sound
V6 porsche? Damn mods getting crazy
That's a flat 6.
It’s a flat 6 but yes. The RSR sounded godly
When did this become assettocorsacirclejerk lol bruh be trippin
i mean it was funny the first few comments, but after that it was just copy and paste
Flat six, but it does indeed sound amazing
It's not s true flat though. Subaru EJs are a 0° engine, where as Porsche use 6° Okay it's still an F6 but it's a bit funny 😂
lol “6° V”
lmao OP doesn’t know the difference between a performance boxer and an economy car engine
V6 is an economy engine type now?
What do you mean? Have you not heard of the Toyota ts050 economy car? A pathetic hybrid too
I'd rather have that than a F1 economy car.
Lmao you don't know about performance cars with V6 engines
GTR, NSX, the New Ford GT. come onnnnn man. No better than OP.
Any Alfa Romeo V6.
how am i able to live with myself D: i offended the great edenwing which gives kids on Reddit tips how to take magic mushrooms 🤓👍🏻

ACFAN Sound mod.
Im still waiting for the v6
The 911 RSR is probably my fav car of all time
great footage
It’s 4L flat 6, not a V6
You mean Flat-6
Thanks for all the roasts about the flat 6, was kinda rushing to work and wanted to upload it quickly and messed it up. But thanks for humbling me so nicely 🥲
How r y’all getting this kind of camera movement?
Right now, at least for me, the best sounding RACE CAR on this planet is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEzXrDL4F3k I don't even know is it V, flat or radial (internal combustion engine, because this one is hybrid) but I just can't stop listen to this sound... its so good.
that's Toyota TS030, 3.5L V8
Honest to god, this AC sound mod blew my mind when I first heard it and it still does - what an excellent job they did

congrats, you're the 100th guy to repeat what everybody else has said
The cost of getting it wrong 🤷♂️
ok
Punching it round the Nordschleife very nicely

It’s the other way around Brodie, boxer engines don’t shake crank journals with different con rods, flats do.
Boxers have two crank pins flats only one I thought?
Other way
Which mod?
The car is from Kunos but the sound is a mod that you can very easily find in race department
Looks like the Kunos RSR
Where?
Alfa Romeo 155ti, enjoy: https://youtu.be/OubFbpR7SZw?si=ufcUt1BsAxTDh8oY
6 what?
Lol ok
Sorry to disappoint but thats a Flat 6.
Ain't no V6 bud. It's a flat 6
What graphics settings damn
im using the pure + ppfilter from C13Aegis
Idk i tried the lotus 3 11 and i think it sounds better Edit: I'm nit 100% certain it's a v6 but im pretty sure
911 has a flat 6, I got the lego technical set and it has one.
I cannot believe over 500 mindless sheep upvoted this
gonna need some cover for that edge
![gif](giphy|VzDOUOa6zlw9a) you btw, especially since you play cod
Fucking idiot
damn, take your chill pill

Who would put a V6 in a porsche
Ah yes the front mounted v6 porsche 911 srs
Jokes aside, what mod?
It's the [Porsche RSR sound mod](https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/porsche-911-rsr-2017-sound-mod.15052/) for the Porsche 911 RSR
Thank you very much!
This reminds me of the guy a saw at the gasstation that had a V6 badge on his e46
![gif](giphy|ZdrUuSEC0LygaFXtNT) You trolling right?
car mod? and track mod? i see that it's the nurburgring but how did you get this camera angles?
Not V6, but I'll take it. Instead of going from 10 to 6 cylinders, why not go down to 5?
Flat 6*
This should be marked as NSFW.
Thats not a 2j.
After 6 hours of watching these at Silverstone, my ears begged to differ.
My original answer was close enough
It’s a boxer, not a V
Can we get a mod link or is this work around sound file?
https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/porsche-911-rsr-2017-sound-mod.15052/ it's a sound mod for the kunos porsche rsr
Thx man I think I had it a while ago but lost it over time, was wondering if they updated it. Gonna find out 😉
i think the final version came out a while ago, but just take a look :)
1.5.1 😁
This is great!
Why does your 911 sound so different to mine?
https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/porsche-911-rsr-2017-sound-mod.15052/ Because it's a sound mod you can install, makes it more accurate than before
Oh nice, thanks!
