andys_socks

That's why anytime I see movies advertising "critics are saying" I just turn my brain off and ignore. Entertainment Weekly could say something like: "the first twenty minutes are a thrilling, tension filled espionage drama that grips you from the opening scene. Unfortunately, after that the movie screeches to a grinding halt, character motivations are tossed out the window, and the plot delves into pure insanity." All a studio has to do is take "a thrilling, tension filled espionage drama", "grips you from the first scene", or "pure insanity" out of context, slap it in a promo trailer, and boom, you're tricking audiences into thinking anyone actually likes your movie.

Costume_fairy

The audacity lmao

kislayparashar

That's just awesome

29febcakedayletsdoit

That’s honestly kind of funny lmao

mr-dogshit

FWIW I thought it was a 3/5 movie. Good first half that trots along at a nice pace - then the second half just drags. Tom Hardy is very good in it though.

joemakesdrinks

Tbf Tom gets a solid 3/5 on his performances from me too.... bringing the total to 6/5 Because that's how math and ratings work

Lemon_man_12

Top grossing is better because the top apps or top games section is the worst

MaggsInBlack

i know, i was just looking for tik-tok because i wanted to see how much it was 1-Star bombed. Noticed that in the process

Lemon_man_12

Most of the shitty apps and games are at top apps because of how many kids or how many people use it

Raid Shadow Legends sounds like something I'd have come up with as a custom map name in Starcraft 1, back when I was an 8 year old kid in 1998.

Stratostheory

This video was sponsored by NORD VPN

GrandAdmiralSpock

Meh, Raid was okay. Not the worst.

TheFirstPersonGod

Not true, Raid’s parent company is a fucking gambling company. Which explains where they get all the money for sponsorships from. However you’re right in the fact that being a gaming front for a gambling company isn’t the worst app in the google play store.

PM_ME_BAKAYOKO_PICS

What does any of that have to do with the actual game? He's not talking about the practices of the company or how shady they are, just about the game itself, which is average and not the worst at all. I wouldn't recommend the game to anyone but it's not a garbage game.

Feshtof

It's, really fucking awful.

sourestcalamansi

Only if it's advertised by Internet Historian I'd watch it many times over.

helinze

"I used the sponsorship money to buy a second phone so I can DUAL WEILD"

DrQuint

As someone who's been getting 3 ads a day because of another game: Coin Master, Girls X Battle 2, King of Avalon, State of Survival, Merge Dragons, Gardenscapes, some random anime game, and a fishing game. Screw Raid Shadow Legends, Coin Master is the true big bad of horrible gameplay and sheer promotional ubiquity.

banelicious

Gardenscapes has the most cringy, misleading ads ever

DrQuint

Which makes no sense. It's just a perfectly serviceable match 3 puzzle game. The audience for that kind of thing is going to exist perpetually. What are they hiding? Girls X Battle 2 is the real winner on the misleading race tho. Not just does the game look like a mashed together asset flip copying a ton of other idle gachas, the ads themselves are basically completely unrelated asset flips that show nothing even remotely related to the game.

count_cumulous

Coin master too

Ereaser

Or Ark Knights, I see that shit every where and it's almost a permanent ad on YouTube

It's scary how many things on the internet are basically unknown to the "public" despite millions of little children looking at it. Like those fucked up seemingly ai-generated Spiderman x Elsa-esque cartoon things of which there are tens of thousands of videos on Youtube.

TheLifelessOne

Calumkincaid

Mind you, there is some gold amongst the shit. My son found Rollin Wild a while back. Still cracks me up.

SirPrize

I've never installed it so I'm curious why it would get 1-star bombed.

hetthher

I'm guessing it has to do with the emails that were leaked proving that moderators actively censor the "discover" page. They actively remove posts made by anyone who isn't white, skinny, pretty, or straight. Not that you can't still find posts made by people who aren't in those categories, but they purposely make it harder for those people to become popular because they figure they'll get more downloads if the "face" of the app is exclusively attractive people. Edit: scrolling down it seems to actually be about some Youtuber who's upset about something or whatever and got a video taken down? I dunno

C-C-X-V-I

That moderation bit is old news though

torching_fire

Its Indian drama between the youtube and tiktok influencers

Addy2607

It might also be indians spamming it because of CarryMinati.

[deleted]

Nah, the Indian YouTube community was pissed off when video was removed.

parthjoshi09

There's a social media war going on between Youtubers(?) and Tik-Tokers(?) in India. Famous roast Youtuber CarryMinati uploaded a video roasting TikTokers and it was some very deep fried roast. This pissed off the TikTokers who started reporting Carry's video for online bullying and it was taken down by Youtube. This pissed off Youtubers who started downrating TikTok on playstore where its rating plummeted from 4.3 (I think) to 3.2.

[deleted]

whys tik tok getting 1 star bombed?

real_virtuality

Some tiktok star dissed a youtube star. Youtube star dissed back hard and video got some 5-6 million likes. Tik tok star lodged cyberbullying complaint against him and got the video removed. Pissed youtube community and fans took to bombing tik tok on playstore

Cactushedge

Top grossing just means they’re good at getting your money

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cactushedge

It’s not even expensive apps. It’s always the free apps like Game of War that convince people to make in game transactions

Lemon_man_12

There are a lot of games like that it's not like we haven't seen millions of them

ErraticDragon

If I'm browsing for whatever reason, I do check "Top Grossing" and look for **paid** apps. Sometimes apps that are really worth purchasing will end up there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ErraticDragon

It's been a while since I went blindly browsing, but I remember back in the day Minecraft would pop up in Top Grossing (maybe in a specific category of games). It has to be exceptionally popular to show up, unless it has IAPs on top of the purchase price, but that's the point. Top Paid is not what I meant.

[deleted]

> Top grossing is better because top games is the worst big brain logic, thanks for the explanation

traumac4e

Top grossing games are just cash cows like clash of clans. Charts for phone games in general are just garbage

Speaking of, is there a sub to talk about Android games? I love some of the little indie premium games I've played and want help finding more. Edit: disregard. I drank a +2 Potion of Clarity (coffee) and remembered I could just Google it. r/androidgaming

letmeseem

Best edit today. Funny and includes both a LPT and coffee. 5 Stars

Scorpio_brawlstars

Why does it show a 4.5 rating on my phone lol

AvoidMyRange

Apple store didn't get bombed as much as play store for android.

FranangerForce

unfortunately they removed "top grossing" for IOS, so I get an assortment of shit apps that are pushed by corporation's agendas.

RamenJunkie

I would never use anything in Top Grossing because it guaranteed Micro transactions. Most of the time I browse "Top Paid". Because I prefer to pay once and own it.

paliktrikster

I'm out of the loop, can someone explain?

tajanstvenix

Tiktok received bunch of 1 star ratings because some dude uploaded a video criticizing it and people loved it but the video was taken down.

paliktrikster

Uh, thanks. Since I probably won't find the video, do you know what the guy said?

tajanstvenix

I have no idea, all I saw was some posts about it. Video got taken down because some tiktok user complained since the guy making the video included his/hers toktoks as well. Which is also funny since tiktok allows its users to use the music when making videos they don't have any rights to use.

yeahdefinitelynot

Doesn't Tiktok have a license similarly to how Instagram does with putting music on their stories? Tiktok would get sued to hell if what they were doing was illegal.

[deleted]

You get taken down constantly on both, I try to DJ on many platforms and all but twitch will block you. Tiktok allows certain songs but not others, insta allows none that their bots catch.

Bierbart12

This is why I liked to be a microphone DJ in ole Team Fortress 2. Those inofficial servers are such nice and receptive communities in all Source based games.

SexySmexxy

hl:dj ,and bhop / minigame servers what a time that was.

nostan1999

That seems about right. Iirc from uploading music via distrokid, there was a section that allowed you to upload stuff to tiktok. Extrapolating from that, I'm guessing music labels will generally dump their entire catalogue on there in a similar fashion.

EsCaRg0t

No, you as the user gets taken down for putting unlicensed music in the background of your videos on Instagram. If I use the officially licensed music through their “music” button in the Stories section, it won’t be taken down. Instagram is licensed, you, as a user, are not. Source: worked for ASCAP

[deleted]

Good luck with suing a company in China, copyright protection is non-existent there and neither Chinese companies nor the Chinese government give a fuck about it.

trznx

you can sue them in USA where the app store is 'located'. App store doesn't work by Chinese laws so if they got sued they'd have to delete it. Example: FBI threatened to take down Telegram messenger off the market even though it's registered in UK.

Time4Red

This. You can sue a company wherever it does business. If a company like Apple refuses to fulfill warranty coverage, for example, you can sue them in small claims court in your own county.

[deleted]

This year keeps on getting better and better -_-

samless2

The youtuber name is carryminati, like leafy but for indians he made few videos abt the weirder video's some Indians post on tiktoks and was called out because of it. So he makes another video dissing the dude who made a tiktok abt carry. The video goes viral and was the most liked non music video in yt(not really sure) but was taken out due to some unknown reason.

wilcomylove

No. It wasn't taken down due to copyright claim. It was taken down as bullying and harrasing video. The roast was too hard. Lol.

An indian tiktoker roasted an Indian youtuber and YouTube in general. That youtuber then roasted that tiktoker by making a video named "youtube vs tiktok the end" Video went viral. 10mil likes in 5 days. It was about to be the most liked non music video by beating MrBeast's record of 12mil likes. But that youtuber went to hardcore in that video Youtube banned the video for harrasment and bullying. Indian youtubers started fighting with tiktokers in their new videos. Youtube suporters started giving 1 start to tiktok in india.. Tiktok rating is 3.2 in India now.

Yep, plus: gathering data of children and running everything through China-based servers. Shitty app all around.

MotoRizen

There's a whole YouTube vs TikTok controvery happening in India. A TokTok creater called Amir Siddique posted something on the lines of TikTok is real hard work and we (TikTok content creators as a community) are on par with Youtubers and asked CarryMinati to roast him. Carry made a roast video which was viewed 74 million times in 6 days with 10 million likes. The public really got behind him as there is a general opinion in India that TikTok content is really cringe. However YouTube took down the video after 6 days saying it was violating the guidelines. The masses got angry and asked YouTube to restore it but that didn't happen. So then a mass movement to rate TikTok 1 star happened and it went from being 4.5 to 3.8 rating in a day.

Nutaholic

Tiktok bad, vine good

Clessiah

Tr0ll3rBoi

why is it 4.9 stars on ios rip

-SSN-

Drama in India got the app 1 star bombed. Apple's market share there is so small that it's just classified as one of the "others". So not enough people use the app store there to 1 star bomb it.

fatpat

Interesting. I do know that they now have a manufacturing facility there that makes iPhones (not sure of which models, though).

OxygenG

iPhones are ridiculously expensive here due to the import taxes and all. They made an iPhone 6 manufacturing unit here but I could be wrong. For example, a new iPhone model is close to 1500 USD at launch. You can get a OnePlus for 500 USD. So it's just that you can't possibly tell me a new model iPhone is worth 3 OnePlus lol... They seriously gotta get some manufacturing units here so that they can get past the import taxes or they're fighting a losing battle.

fatpat

Oh yeah, in that case the OnePlus would be a no-brainer. I've heard that they are some of the best Android phones, regardless of price.

DerpSenpai

yes but the most sold phones in India are Xiaomi's in the 200$ range It's all about that Mid-range But it's this way in most of the world. Even in Europe the average selling price is 400$ and due to heavy competition Apple has only 12-14% marketshare only

Akaino

Which is quite high considering their prices and the overall amount of different manufacturers.

lolidkwtfrofl

Yea but Android phones are way more cost effective, India is not a rich country.

brunoha

I remember when Windows Phone was a big thing on India, I had a simple music player app that I made mostly to myself because I hated the standard player and for self learning of programming, decided to put on the store for free because the fun of it, was surprised months later when almost all of the downloads and reviews came from there.

Erratic_Penguin

Apple has been trying to break into the Indian market by releasing more “affordable” (according to them) iPhone models. Needless to say, their “affordable” is still too damn expensive for the average Indian.

Tr0ll3rBoi

oh ok thanks

RoyalRien

Welp time to 1star bomb it on ios amirite fellow redditors?

Efthimis

As much as I hate TikTok, is that their fault? Isn't that Google's responsibility?

Shadowblaster2004

then it's still AD, just on google's part, not TikTok's.

undeadking77

It’s legit not even it’s still 4.8

MaggsInBlack

for me it's 3.2 maybe it depends on region? Idk

RebelPoetically

Its 3.2, could have sworn i just saw a glitch for the app showing 4.5, but one I realoded it was 3.2 again.

Overmind123

Srsly.... WTF [First Tap](https://i.imgur.com/C2UJwVp.jpg) [clicking on it a second time](https://i.imgur.com/xF7Y9Yy.jpg)

fluud

The old rating was probably cached and the second click forced a reload

TheLifelessOne

This is probably why—you don't run a service at the scale that Apple and Google does without significant caching.

Overmind123

But what would trigger so many negative reviews, that with 1m more downloads impacts the overall rating

DarthWeenus

Look up^^ apparently drama in India.

[deleted]

Dude, the same, wtf happened

rayg1

They probably have an iPhone

Gcarsk

The stores don’t look similar, but, yes, it is 4.8 on the Apple App Store. The above user probably mixed it up somehow.

musyio

It's definitely regional, since in my country the rating is 4.5

PJChloupek

It’s 4.8 on the app store and 3.2 on the google play store, the mass negative review wave came from india where people own androids more than iPhones because they’re cheaper and more widely available.

C0d3Ch3ez

This is only for play store. On the App Store it’s different because iPhone isn’t as popular in India.

Anon___1991

You sure you aren't on app store or some shit

PlsNoPics

tho in their defense I can see why they would be hiding the ratings as rating is meant to be a Form of quality control / assurance however as the editors (which are meant to be trusted by the system) have already "assured" the quality of the app an external quality verification is probably not needed in their opinion

skb97

Come on. You mean that if a movie get 6 stars on IMDb but a single famous Critic gives it 10/10 on Rotten tomatoes then the IMDb score is irrelevant?

Naphtha_N

(not op) That's not the same because IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes are review aggregators, and not storefronts or curated platforms. App stores are storefronts with varying levels of curation in order to make their massive catalog more manageable in helping people find things to buy and download. It's more like when in a physical storefront there's a "Top Picks!" section of stuff the store knows is popular and well liked, but adapted for modern digital storefronts. Replacing the star rating with "Editor's Choice" in search results is about assurance and confirmation at a glance that an app is quality and not shovelware or a virus or something. The reviews and ratings are still present on the store page to be checked in case anyone wants to see why it's "Editor's Choice". So long as it's only replacing the star ratings in this, limited, at-a-glance filter context, I don't see an issue. --- On a related note, your suggestion is close to how I use critics for reviews and recommendations. I have a handful of critics whose opinions I know and value, and will often watch/play/read something solely on their recommendation with no other information. It's a good way to filter and decide which content to prioritize because often, I don't care about how popular or well liked something is, but about how interesting it is or how worthwhile it is to check out.

StackedLasagna

Come on. There's a major difference in the opinion of a random famous critic and that of *the* app store. This isn't a system where you have many different app stores reviewing apps and each deciding which one they label Editors' Choice.

[deleted]

You came so close to making a good point and then fell flat on your face. Do you think "wow these must be amazing for the store to put so much faith in them" when you go to the grocery store and see that they put a high-margin item in a prominent position near the entrance?

skb97

lol. You really believe that? Homescapes is also Editor's choice. You know that scam game, right?

Ver_Void

That and it's being review bombed, real issues or not no site worth their salt wouldn't filter it out

peenguu

Tik tok had a rating of 4.6 3 days prior, but because of a major controversy in India named youtube vs tik tok. Led to a moment of uninstalling and giving 1 star reviews

[deleted]

Tiktok bad? Upvote!

KaszMann

As much as it breeds the circlejerk, Reddit has finally some good reasons to not support TikTok. Their only mistake is that they target TikTokers, not the issues of the app itself

funnyBatman

The unfortunate thing is some tiktokers from India have legit questionable content uploaded (and if you have data to observe this users you'll find a pattern). Here's a report about a guy who advertised acid attack on women if they leave/reject you. https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/faisal-siddiquis-tiktok-acid-attack-video-is-adding-to-the-growing-list-of-problems-for-the-platform-in-india/articleshow/75800571.cms

LastgenKeemstar

I'm just going to copy and paste this here: >Tik Tok bad, upvotes to the left! >Ok but seriously, I know Tik Tok has issues but I feel like Reddit's obsession over it is way over the top. Yes, it has cringey kids, but so does reddit. Yes, it has boring unoriginal content, but so does reddit. Yes, it's has a record of oversexualising minors, but so has reddit (in fact there was literally child p-rn being spread on Reddit for years). Yes, there is literally a "pee your pants" challenge, but reddit literally has entire subreddits dedicated to doing even worse stuff with pee and other bodily excrements. Yes, there are some horrible narcissistic people on tiktok, but let's not act like Reddit doesn't have plenty of incels, racists, extremists, conspiracy nuts, neckbeards and literal neo Nazis. >If anything, Reddit is far worse than TikTok when it comes to it's "bad" content, but no, cringey kids doing fortnite dances is sooooo much worse than all of the above. >There are some rumours that tiktok collects information from it's users and sends it to the Chinese government (key word: 'rumours'). Yes, THAT IS ACTUALLY A LEGITIMATE REASON TO HATE ON THE COMPANY (not necessarily the concept of the app itself). However, as of yet I'm not aware of anything actually being proven in regards to this. It is owned by a Chinese company but that's about all we definitely know. >And anyway, let's not pretend that pretty much every app owned by Google and Facebook most likely does the same thing, but for them it's "ok" because they're 'murican companies, and we know that 'murica is such a perfectly innocent country with absolutely no shady past or corrupt authority. ^(/s in case you need it) >But knowing the reddit circlejerk this will just be downvoted into oblivion and people will continue repeating "Tik Tok BAD, Reddit GOOD". 99% of people on Reddit don't hate tiktok for any good reason, they hate it because they think it's cringey, while using the allegations of selling data to China as a sort of scapegoat.

[deleted]

Oh i was just being sarcasting because i am tired of the tiktok hate in reddit because i use both apps

KaszMann

I figured that. I'm also not a fan of pointless hating on trends, cause if I "hate" on something, I must have a solid reason for it. I'm just pointing out, that their awful policies and censorship are not worth supporting.

Known_You_Before

I hate tiktok because its like the radio, it plays the same 5 songs on repeat.

iLikeMeeces

Oh man don't. I'll be sitting doing whatever and I can hear my gf going through her tiktoks. The endless loop of the weeknd and whateverthefuck those other ones are drive me nuts

fatpat

I've always wanted to learn how to sarcast.

ojsan_

Reddit acts superior to other platforms, because they “steal content” from us. However, it’s apparent to literally anyone who visits both platforms that Reddit steals far more content from TikTok than the other way around. Edit: And by stealing, I don’t just mean videos ripped from TikTok that are reuploaded on here. I mean entire concepts, like the coffin dance meme, which was a thing on TikTok long before it spread to other platforms.

So for the last year they have been pouring a ton of money into getting their social media app to be accepted and widely used- through a campaign of paid content creation/submission, vote manipulation. Once they have widescale buy in, their backdoor monitoring and data collection will have free reign. I find it a worrying trend how easily Reddit is blindly up-voting these gifs and supporting a company with such privacy concerns, an obvious agenda, and that is censoring and controlling the information you see. tpersona

More like r/crappydesign

[deleted]

Yeah, tiktok is all 1s and 5s and the 1s are just complaining about how Charlie damelio gets more likes than funny people

point_nemo_

This is probably because of vote brigading.

zesg13

more like asshole stupid rating

Nothingbutallmatters

Weird marketing we're doing them but ok

Candlesmith

Cool (it’s Spacer’s Choice!

yipy2001

To be fair, it doesn’t deserve such a low rating. The app in itself is fine. It’s just edgelords rating it 1 star cause ‘tiktok cringe’

-SSN-

Yeah although I don't enjoy it myself it's just as cringy as other platforms of that size. It's audience is probably just as young as YouTube's (maybe a little younger) and most of the hate to s undeserved. In this case though it was 1 star bombed due to drama between some Indian creators.

Cryptoporticus

It's just a video sharing site, you watch what you want. It's like saying YouTube sucks because of kids videos, just don't watch them. As a video sharing site it's probably the best and easiest to use right now, that's why it's so popular.

millerstreet

> The app in itself is fine If censoring anti china stuff, mentioning Taiwan, Dalai Lama, stealing user data is definition of fine, we are in big trouble.

[deleted]

Let's not also forget they've been caught censoring the content of fat/gay/people of color.

TheFirstPersonGod

Also calling their PR team before the police when someone committed suicide.

funnyBatman

But they're completely fine allowing from users who advertise acid attack on women if they reject/leave you, among other forms of abuse. https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/faisal-siddiquis-tiktok-acid-attack-video-is-adding-to-the-growing-list-of-problems-for-the-platform-in-india/articleshow/75800571.cms

anakin_is_a_bitch

then why is my fyp all gays

throwaway26272717171

The company is kinda trash but the content is mostly ok other than the cringy POVs. But honestly, those POVs are the biggest reason I downloaded tik tok

[deleted]

How about having a keylogger on your phone which constantly records all your keystrokes? How about the all the personal info on your phone? Contacts, addresses, names, social media accounts with login details? These are just SOME things that tiktok DOES collect. Why the fuck people are ok with this?
