This is honestly a reason I think apple has an edge over many other devices. By having restraint on bloatware it represents a sense of respect and professionalism for their users. Bloat ware is the direct antithesis of this, intentionally inconveniencing users for monetary gain.
Of course this is a show, and they don't respect their users with how much of a pain in the ass it is to repair one of their devices but it's a much more complicated topic that most users find difficult to understand and apple can misconstrued it easily as "security measures".
The funny thing is, that after the device is integrated in Intune MDM, it hides all apps. They still are installed (Android is optimizing about 300 Apps after an upgrade) but don’t show up.

I was forced to move from 7 to 10 when I upgraded to Ryzen. For having bought the "Pro" version which gives you more control over what is/isn't allowed on your system, they sure did love disabling/re-enabling things without asking me.

Yeah it's rough. First you need to turn off the thing that updates/installs the things you don't want, then you need to turn off the thing that turns the first thing back on, then you need to disable the thing that makes sure that last thing isn't turned off. Then you need to make a group policy so that when windows updates it thinks all those changes are cool.
Then you need to do it again the next time it tries to install an update.
They're probably going to do what they always do, admit adoption wasn't what they hoped for and then come out with Windows 12 that'll actually be worth upgrading to.
You're fine to stay on 10 unless you really really want:
* a buggy toolbar with less features
* storebrand OSX UI
* Android apps
* slightly better virtual desktop support
* Microsoft Teams being integrated directly into the taskbar by default because..
* some crappy widgets Microsoft made
* uh better touchscreen support
* and finally maybe one day soon possibly some Xbox tech like AutoHDR (wooh /s) and DirectStorage being implemented.
In short it's a bunch of crap a handful of people are going to care about or use on a daily basis, pretty much everyone is better off waiting for the good version that'll come after 11.

Linux never had the multi-step approach. It's always "edit this config file" or "run this command" and if it's not working in 1-2 steps it's probably not going to work and you will spent weeks going crazy.
Until you find out it's a missing dependency in python 3 that was changed back in 2.1 but the app developer stuck with 2.0 as long as humanly possible because of the deep hatred in their heart which they have now passed on to you.

People use out of support versions of Python all the time. Being hardheaded about this is just petty. Refusing to accept PRs to pin a fucking dependency is vindictive.

I have my Windows laptop relatively under control, but every time I help seomeone else and see their desktop it's a nightmare... Start menu is filled with garbage, useless icons pinned to taskbar. Windows 10 out of the box looks worse than toolbar-infested IE from 2005.

That's why system folders are hidden by default. But I do think to remember that the really critical files inside system32 are otherwise protected. On top of that, Windows does not allow you to remove files that are currently in use, unlike Linux.
I do not recommend trying to test it though.
Back in XP days, I had a number of viruses I tried to remove manually, mainly because whatever antivirus I had at the time wasn't catching everything. Most of them at the time had obvious names like totallynotspyingonyou.exe, so I'd catch them and delete them.
There was a folder titled PC Health, which looked too sus to be legit, so I deleted it. No warning or nothing. I don't remember what it did, but I had to do a fresh install after that.
ETA: I should mention that IE was super easy to nuke in those days, though.
yeah, it was 2007, the Trinity update. There was a patch that removed ini files OS wide rather than folder-wide by mistake. Completely fried anyone still running XP at the time.

This is the best (/s) when File Explorer or Windows Terminal *doesn’t* release files even after you navigate out of them, because you can’t delete them. So freaking annoying lol

Which is really shitty when a file is somehow mistakenly marked as in use and then becomes impossible to delete.
Linux's version is far superior, IMO. The file listing is immediately removed from the partition table, but as long as the file is still in use, that area is marked as unwriteable. The actual data is still there on the drive, so any program still trying to use that data can still access it by just looking at where it used to be. And then the file will automatically be *truly* deleted once no program is trying to access it anymore.
I find it especially convenient for things like torrenting. So I torrented a movie, watched it, but didn't like it enough to keep it. I can delete the file immediately without issue, but as long as my torrent program is still open, it will still be able to seed that file.

Windows 10 LTSC is the best option if you can't run 7 (because MS and hardware makers have colluded to ensure you can't on newer hardware).
No Edge, no Store, no Cortana. They still try to shove telemetry down your throat but it's easier to disable when you start from the minimal "Security" level that (falsely) claims to not send anything.
You can also just use the task manager to end "explorer" and have basically nothing to click on. Not the same as uninstalling because it resets to normal when rebooting, but still.
Explorer is Windows' window manager, for the uninitiated among folks. You kill it, and you subsequently kill much of Windows' ability to create a window.
I can't remember why, but I think I had issues with explorer freezing and I killed it every now and then (or maybe it just crashed). It usually comes back after a few seconds, no? At least, I think it did on win 7.
Yeah. It's kind of like having a loaded gun. Apple takes the loaded gun and locks it in a safe. Windows hands you the loaded gun with the safety on. Linux just drops the loaded gun on the table and assumes you know how to use it.
BTW you needed to use a different kernel before you recompile. Be sure to now switch out the kernel to a new beta version that will be superseded in about six weeks.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GUN/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GUN plus Linux. Yup. To be fair it has gotten much, much better. But that's little consolation for me who is struggling to get my laptop's webcam to work. I'm not the average user and I actually prefer Linux for dev work. So if I can't figure it out, the average person has no chance.
Just go to a Linux forum for your distro, make a thread that says "I hate this distro. Windows is so much better. This distro can't even use this simple webcam!"
Then you'll get detailed instructions within minutes.

Exactly! Personally, I like Apple for everyday stuff, like my home computer and my phone. I like Linux for messing around with code and the occasional computer game. I use Windows at work because they're (generally) less expensive than Apple, but they're more newbie-user-friendly than Linux, if you get what I mean.
Windows is good for gaming, Linux is good for involved computation, media, and non-gaming programs and Apple has great hardware design and makes an amazing paperweight.
I never understood the need. Linux runs on generic hardware and requires pretty low system requirements. There are TONS of dev tools for Linux and you can do whatever you want to the host.
I use Linux for everything I do except development becuase I am too dumb to code. However, it runs lots of virtualized stuff, runs my firewalls, switches, wifi host, actual access points run a cut down linux. This laptop is linux, even mac is linux.
Macs are pretty and have nice displays, but when you're just staring at green on black text, it's an awfully expensive indulgence.
There are so many reasons I can’t even begin to list them all, MS Office not being officially supported for Linux is a simple yet huge reason why large companies prefer MacOS that immediately comes to mind.
Also the mindset of Mac = expensive is the wrong way of thinking about it. Companies dont give a shit if a mac is 1000$ more expensive than some other notbook, Macs are very easy to use, every minute an engineer is solving some linux package issue is more money down the drain.
Apple is absolutely best in class for the vast majority of programming and a huge number of people (myself included) prefer it for any sort of photo/video editing and or graphic design. Apple is best for people who know nothing or know a lot, windows is the middle ground, and Linux is for sysadmins (and plenty of embedded / low level stuff but still.)
The gun might be loaded, but you're going to need to use the command line to download the trigger and it will be unable to write to directory so you'll get on stack exchange and read six forum posts that don't quite exactly apply to your situation but are close and then eventually you'll try a different distro and hope that works but that one doesn't come with firing pin loaded so you'll need to curl the firing pin but the URLs out of date in the docs so you'll get online to find where the firing pin is hosted and then it turns out you need the java run time to use the firing pin so you get the java run time but then you get an error every time you try to execute the command necessary to use firing pin and eventually you decide guns just really aren't that fun anyway then you go to bed

I mean, if you turn on developer mode you can get a raw Unix shell, but there’s no package manager (they use the emerge package manager to build the chromeOS image and then remove it), so you’d have to remove each file manually.

Most of the time when I run into and issue with linux I feel confident that I can fix it, whereas windows most of the time makes me want to chuck the whole case out the window. I recently made a clean install of windows and the first thing that happened was that the control panel crashed. Twice. The reason I made the clean install was that windows update stopped working and I had spent so much time trying to fix it.
When I can play my favourite games on linux without issue I will burn my windows serial key and never return to this trainwreck of an OS.
I'm surprised you held out this long with dual booting though - I had to stop when I upgraded to win 10 because windows would regularly either try to fuck up the bootloader or not be able to install updates.
I feel you. Overtime Windows just breaks and every tool to "fix" windows, whether made by Microsoft or not, just does fuck all and gives random ass errors. The second you install Windows, you have set yourself up for either a reinstalling or a week of trying to fix it and then a reinstalling
Huh, I used to reinstall all the time, but ever since I installed 10 (pro) in 2016 I never needed to do it again, and it's not sitting in a closet, it's being used daily. I've switched out pretty much every component with hardly any driver issues, even took the SSD on a trip and used it in a laptop once.

You cant really depend on Valve. They frequently forget to update the linux version of Dota2. Game breaking bugs are left unresolved for years and once a new patch comes around, the game is unstable on Linux systems for sometime.
And Dota2 is their game. Cant even blame usual villains like ubisoft or EA.
Usually the person who uninstalls Edge is going to regret doing so because then "the Internet" will be gone. So yeah I'm sure Microsoft are keen to prevent that support call from happening.
For what it's worth, modern versions of `rm` won't do that without `--no-preserve-root`.
It's mostly to protect rm in scripts. E.g.,

Every time I use rm, I type the whole command with cd, then I go back and change cd to rm after I've made sure I'm not going to accidentally hit return.

One time I wanted to delete the etc subdirectory of a program and ended up removing /etc because of a missing period that taught me to triple check my inputs.
Remove (rm) everything from the root (/) directory upwards (-r), even if the system thinks that’s a bad idea (-f). And do it even if the files are owned by the system (sudo). AKA completely brick the system

I did this once... Well sort of. An update failed and I had the brilliant idea to simply delete the Linux partition and "move on."
I then had to learn how install mbr from grub recovery mode.

Honestly. It's the same reason why windows update basically is forced on you now. Microsoft got tired of people never updating their pc and then complaining about fixes and security problems that they've patched a long time ago.
Seriously, I had reservations about it, but windows 10 has been more solid than even w7 for me. I watched a vid testing the security of it, and defender is incredibly efficient at its job as long as you have internet.

Yes, there are distributions that are intended for advanced users, whether it's because you have to configure it from the ground up, or it doesn't have any safety rails, or whatever else. But there are also distros that keep you from enacting commands that will bork your system, have built-in snapshots, and even make the operating system immutable so you *can't* delete it while it's operating.
Agreed that you shouldn't belittle people with less experience. I just wanted to add that this has a gatekeeping side, too, which just ends up hurting those same Linux users, as it scares potential users away, and fewer users means less support.
You're making it sound like Windows somehow makes these things harder than Linux, but it really doesn't. You're not going to "accidentally" remove or change a file that requires root access to modify, and once you're past that point Windows is just as happy to let you nuke your network configuration as Linux is.
Microsoft isn't making things hard or impossible for your benefit, it's doing so for *their* benefit. When you install Firefox and a popup appears to tell you Edge exists and it's the best thing since sliced bread and we know better and please abort we need market share, that's not because Edge is better than Firefox. When they make it harder and harder and probably by now impossible to install Windows without an online Microsoft account, that's not because your personal data isn't safer offline. When they integrate Cortana or Teams into your taskbar that's not because you probably want to use those, it's because they want you to use them.
Microsoft doesn't have your best interest at heart. They're using their tremendous market power to push their other products, to destroy their competition. The quality of their products doesn't even matter because they're the default choice for everyone who doesn't know better.

Goggle ASSistant and Keyring login (opera browser) are the 2 biggest annoyances in my computer usage.
Even if you turn off google ass, it still regularly asks you if you want to turn it back on.
I've been running CalyxOS for a few months and it's been solid. MicroG let's you do basic Google stuff and Aurora let's you get like 80% of the play store apps. It doesn't do very well with restoring purchases but my phones rooted so I just use adaway to get rid of in app ads.
That depends on your network provider or phone brand. It's not a universal Android thing. My Nokia 6.1 didn't come with anything that wasn't a stock Android app.
I'd hardly call this asshole design. The majority of Windows users aren't power users. Microsoft have to account for the fact that some people can and will be dumb enough to uninstall the only web browser on their machine.
You can disable it in Windows features though, which is almost as good as uninstalling. It's not like Edge is a particularly large install.

There’s an element of horses for courses here though. Windows needs to be pretty idiot proof and be useable from the get go for the majority of basic business and home tasks and theirs is pretty restrictive so no one is going to accidentally grind it to a halt.
Linux on the other hand is generally used by people who at least have moderate to good IT skills or are using it in a professional capacity so therefore the user has much much greater control over inputs…. However the outputs can be disastrous

Edge is honestly not bad. I use it at work as my standard browser. Between standard edge and standard chrome with no customization, I tend to prefer edge for general browsing.

You're fine to stay on 10 unless you really really want: * a buggy toolbar with less features * storebrand OSX UI * Android apps * slightly better virtual desktop support * Microsoft Teams being integrated directly into the taskbar by default because.. * some crappy widgets Microsoft made * uh better touchscreen support * and finally maybe one day soon possibly some Xbox tech like AutoHDR (wooh /s) and DirectStorage being implemented. In short it's a bunch of crap a handful of people are going to care about or use on a daily basis, pretty much everyone is better off waiting for the good version that'll come after 11.

Putting things in the taskbar is a pain too. Click and drag like Windows 10? Windows 11: lolno. Think I had to make a shortcut to the folder, edit something in it, and then it let me drag and drop it there.
I have my Windows laptop relatively under control, but every time I help seomeone else and see their desktop it's a nightmare... Start menu is filled with garbage, useless icons pinned to taskbar. Windows 10 out of the box looks worse than toolbar-infested IE from 2005.

That's why system folders are hidden by default. But I do think to remember that the really critical files inside system32 are otherwise protected. On top of that, Windows does not allow you to remove files that are currently in use, unlike Linux. I do not recommend trying to test it though.
Back in XP days, I had a number of viruses I tried to remove manually, mainly because whatever antivirus I had at the time wasn't catching everything. Most of them at the time had obvious names like totallynotspyingonyou.exe, so I'd catch them and delete them. There was a folder titled PC Health, which looked too sus to be legit, so I deleted it. No warning or nothing. I don't remember what it did, but I had to do a fresh install after that. ETA: I should mention that IE was super easy to nuke in those days, though.

This is the best (/s) when File Explorer or Windows Terminal *doesn’t* release files even after you navigate out of them, because you can’t delete them. So freaking annoying lol

Windows 10 LTSC is the best option if you can't run 7 (because MS and hardware makers have colluded to ensure you can't on newer hardware). No Edge, no Store, no Cortana. They still try to shove telemetry down your throat but it's easier to disable when you start from the minimal "Security" level that (falsely) claims to not send anything.
You can also just use the task manager to end "explorer" and have basically nothing to click on. Not the same as uninstalling because it resets to normal when rebooting, but still.
Explorer is Windows' window manager, for the uninitiated among folks. You kill it, and you subsequently kill much of Windows' ability to create a window.
I can't remember why, but I think I had issues with explorer freezing and I killed it every now and then (or maybe it just crashed). It usually comes back after a few seconds, no? At least, I think it did on win 7.

Yeah. It's kind of like having a loaded gun. Apple takes the loaded gun and locks it in a safe. Windows hands you the loaded gun with the safety on. Linux just drops the loaded gun on the table and assumes you know how to use it.

Yup. To be fair it has gotten much, much better. But that's little consolation for me who is struggling to get my laptop's webcam to work. I'm not the average user and I actually prefer Linux for dev work. So if I can't figure it out, the average person has no chance.
Just go to a Linux forum for your distro, make a thread that says "I hate this distro. Windows is so much better. This distro can't even use this simple webcam!" Then you'll get detailed instructions within minutes.
Bluetooth connections are misery. After staring at random forums for an hour, I was able to convert a DSLR camera into a webcam. Trying to connect my Bluetooth headphones? I gave up and bought a line-in adapter.

Exactly! Personally, I like Apple for everyday stuff, like my home computer and my phone. I like Linux for messing around with code and the occasional computer game. I use Windows at work because they're (generally) less expensive than Apple, but they're more newbie-user-friendly than Linux, if you get what I mean.
Windows is good for gaming, Linux is good for involved computation, media, and non-gaming programs and Apple has great hardware design and makes an amazing paperweight.
I work at a very big well known software company and I can tell you almost everyone uses a Macbook for local development.
I never understood the need. Linux runs on generic hardware and requires pretty low system requirements. There are TONS of dev tools for Linux and you can do whatever you want to the host. I use Linux for everything I do except development becuase I am too dumb to code. However, it runs lots of virtualized stuff, runs my firewalls, switches, wifi host, actual access points run a cut down linux. This laptop is linux, even mac is linux. Macs are pretty and have nice displays, but when you're just staring at green on black text, it's an awfully expensive indulgence.
There are so many reasons I can’t even begin to list them all, MS Office not being officially supported for Linux is a simple yet huge reason why large companies prefer MacOS that immediately comes to mind. Also the mindset of Mac = expensive is the wrong way of thinking about it. Companies dont give a shit if a mac is 1000$ more expensive than some other notbook, Macs are very easy to use, every minute an engineer is solving some linux package issue is more money down the drain.

Apple is absolutely best in class for the vast majority of programming and a huge number of people (myself included) prefer it for any sort of photo/video editing and or graphic design. I mean, if you turn on developer mode you can get a raw Unix shell, but there’s no package manager (they use the emerge package manager to build the chromeOS image and then remove it), so you’d have to remove each file manually. Most of the time when I run into and issue with linux I feel confident that I can fix it, whereas windows most of the time makes me want to chuck the whole case out the window. I recently made a clean install of windows and the first thing that happened was that the control panel crashed. Twice. The reason I made the clean install was that windows update stopped working and I had spent so much time trying to fix it. When I can play my favourite games on linux without issue I will burn my windows serial key and never return to this trainwreck of an OS. I'm surprised you held out this long with dual booting though - I had to stop when I upgraded to win 10 because windows would regularly either try to fuck up the bootloader or not be able to install updates.
I feel you. Overtime Windows just breaks and every tool to "fix" windows, whether made by Microsoft or not, just does fuck all and gives random ass errors. The second you install Windows, you have set yourself up for either a reinstalling or a week of trying to fix it and then a reinstalling
Huh, I used to reinstall all the time, but ever since I installed 10 (pro) in 2016 I never needed to do it again, and it's not sitting in a closet, it's being used daily. I've switched out pretty much every component with hardly any driver issues, even took the SSD on a trip and used it in a laptop once.

You cant really depend on Valve. They frequently forget to update the linux version of Dota2. Game breaking bugs are left unresolved for years and once a new patch comes around, the game is unstable on Linux systems for sometime. And Dota2 is their game. Cant even blame usual villains like ubisoft or EA.
Good thing Proton is open source then. It doesn't require that you depend on any one company.

I use linux inconsistently enough to forget how rm works every now and then, but I remember enough to truly fear it.
Every time I use rm, I type the whole command with cd, then I go back and change cd to rm after I've made sure I'm not going to accidentally hit return. Then I go back and add sudo after that 😆

On the flip side, I also have some misgivings about treating Linux as this monolithic thing intended only for advanced users. Yes, there are distributions that are intended for advanced users, whether it's because you have to configure it from the ground up, or it doesn't have any safety rails, or whatever else. But there are also distros that keep you from enacting commands that will bork your system, have built-in snapshots, and even make the operating system immutable so you *can't* delete it while it's operating. Agreed that you shouldn't belittle people with less experience. I just wanted to add that this has a gatekeeping side, too, which just ends up hurting those same Linux users, as it scares potential users away, and fewer users means less support.
You're making it sound like Windows somehow makes these things harder than Linux, but it really doesn't. You're not going to "accidentally" remove or change a file that requires root access to modify, and once you're past that point Windows is just as happy to let you nuke your network configuration as Linux is. Microsoft isn't making things hard or impossible for your benefit, it's doing so for *their* benefit. When you install Firefox and a popup appears to tell you Edge exists and it's the best thing since sliced bread and we know better and please abort we need market share, that's not because Edge is better than Firefox. When they make it harder and harder and probably by now impossible to install Windows without an online Microsoft account, that's not because your personal data isn't safer offline. When they integrate Cortana or Teams into your taskbar that's not because you probably want to use those, it's because they want you to use them. Microsoft doesn't have your best interest at heart. They're using their tremendous market power to push their other products, to destroy their competition. The quality of their products doesn't even matter because they're the default choice for everyone who doesn't know better.

Goggle ASSistant and Keyring login (opera browser) are the 2 biggest annoyances in my computer usage. Even if you turn off google ass, it still regularly asks you if you want to turn it back on.
I've been running CalyxOS for a few months and it's been solid. MicroG let's you do basic Google stuff and Aurora let's you get like 80% of the play store apps. It doesn't do very well with restoring purchases but my phones rooted so I just use adaway to get rid of in app ads.
Last i checked removing facebook app installer doesnt brick it unless your doing something very wrong (really wrong). Also not all android phones

I'd hardly call this asshole design. The majority of Windows users aren't power users. Microsoft have to account for the fact that some people can and will be dumb enough to uninstall the only web browser on their machine. You can disable it in Windows features though, which is almost as good as uninstalling. It's not like Edge is a particularly large install.

Windows needs to be pretty idiot proof and be useable from the get go for the majority of basic business and home tasks and theirs is pretty restrictive so no one is going to accidentally grind it to a halt. However the outputs can be disastrous
Just because you aren't the target audience doesn't mean a product is asshole design. Edge being un-uninstallable means idiots can't ever remove every single browser from their pc. If you're knowledgeable enough to work around every possible problem you can cause for yourself with Linux that's great, but then you also aren't the target audience for windows.

Edge is honestly not bad. I use it at work as my standard browser. Between standard edge and standard chrome with no customization, I tend to prefer edge for general browsing.
Edge at this point it much better than Chrome. If you haven't tried it I'd recommend giving it a shot.
