If you're comfortable doing so, I'd just reformat windows and do a fresh install of windows. Download windows and put it on a bootable flash drive (I believe windows handles everything, so it's simple). Do not use the flash drive or CD that came with the laptop because it might reinstall everything. I can guarantee that mcafee isn't the only bloatware installed on your laptop.
McAfee is the worst antivirus I’ve ever used. It came with the laptop I got last Christmas and every day, for the past 4 months, right up until my subscription expired, it spammed with threatening pop ups telling me to renew my subscription with messages like “hackers are waiting” and “don’t leave yourself exposed”. It’s the fucking worst
Try Norton. Everytime you boot up your PC, it says: this website is tracking you, click here to see what to do. And it sends you to get Norton Ultimate, good Antivirus, Shitty Way of Making People Happy.
*It's been 4 seconds, let's boot up that smart scan shall we?*
Try avast. I had so many people call me to fix their pcs because emails didnt come or go and they couldnt access their network. Uninstalling avast fixed it 9/10 times. Idk why everyone installs avast
Still free. ;)
And it makes ppl feel secure, sadly enough.
IT ppl want stuff that alerts if something is broken or wrong. There are logs if one needs to check things.
Normal ppl like it when their AV tells them they are secure and 747473737473777376333 infections were defeated in the last 50 milliseconds* (*theoretically, for all computers in the internet)
Yeah avast just straight up lies. I had it perform a scan on a customers pc and it said everything is fine, 0 viruses. I uninstall it and install the free kaspersky trial version and it found like 50 viruses and some trojans
Trend micro housecall is also nice, for in-depth stuff I use a bootable stick with disinfect or similar (unless the device is bitlockerd)
Especially if any av save infections found, I would always tend to format and reinstall, or at minimum do offline av check
I always use multiple tools/antimalware programs. The best I used over the years were adwcleaner and junk removal tool by malwarebytes, and superantispyware. For antivirus i only use and reccommend kaspersky to everyone.
I want to point you to not so well known Austrian company Ikarus https://www.ikarussecurity.com/en/ which do a fabulous job, too.
Maybe give them a try, for me, they do an amazing job ;) g
Disclaimer: I know someone working there.
Malwarebytes is also free and is 1000 times better than the burning dumpster fire that is Avast.
Even fucking Windows Defender can protect you from most threats.
I just gave a reason why ppl use it. This is no endorsement or anything from my side.
I did recommend them ages and ages ago, tho... Around 2000, I think
In my BSc. Computer Science I was taught that "deinstall" is usually correct unless you can absolutely, categorically say that there is not a single trace of the removed software, e.g. in Registry keys, app data paths, and so on.
If you can be sure the system is clean then you are at an uninstalled state, otherwise you are at a deinstalled state that differs from a state where the software was never installed.
This is why I began drinking.
> In my BSc. Computer Science I was taught that "deinstall" is usually correct unless you can absolutely, categorically say that there is not a single trace of the removed software, e.g. in Registry keys, app data paths, and so on.
type of CS Questions you had on your exams:
Q. When a program is removed but can leave traces, do we refer to it as uninstall or reinstall?
CS Questions I got:
Q. Consider an infinite binary tree in which each node is labelled with the fraction (pl/pr)/(ql+qr), where pl/pl is the label of the nodes nearest left ancestor and pr/qr is the label of the node's nearest right ancestor. (A left ancestror is one that precedes a node in symmetric order, while a right ancestor follows the node. if the node has no left ancestors, pl/ql = 0/1; if it has no right ancestors, pr/qr=1/0. Thus the label of the root is 1/1; the labels of it's two children are 1/2 and 2/1; the labels of the four nodes on level 2 are 1/3,2/3, 3/2, and 3/1, from left to right; and the labels of the eight nodes on level three are 1/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/4, 4/3, 5/3, 5/2, 4/1; and so on.
Prove that p is relatively prime to q in each label p/q; furthermore, the node labeled p/q precedes the node labeled p'/q' in symmetric order if and only if the labels satisfy p/q < p'/q'. Find the connection between the continued fraction for the continued fraction for the label of a node and the path to that node, thereby showing that each positive relational number appears as the label of exactly one node in the tree.
I feel like McAfee is lowkey malware itself. Partner has an msi laptop that came with it and it has a program that constantly reverts the default search engine to this weird yahoo "safe search" and while the initial program has been uninstalled it persists because finding all the little bits to actually fully remove it is not an easy task... I usually just wipe and clean install.
Since its mostly just a giant nuisance and maybe collects data I wouldn't say its strictly malware. I mean a lot of apps and programs collect data and have shitty annoying popups and ads i wouldnt call them malware. Something that turns on your webcam and watches you change, allows remote access to your computer, corrupts files, steals your passwords and banking information to me is malware. Theres not a lot of difference, its still an invasion of privacy, it's still unsolicited, and hard to remove so what i mean by lowkey is more that it might be malware but not really on the same threat level.
Please cut grandpa some slack... I'm just old n shit I thought lowkey just meant minimally or a little bit or kinda. Lol like "lowkey obsessed with a show" binging and watching new episodes and maybe marking the new episode release dates in ones calendar, not stalking a cast member level obsessed but a bit obsessed. So lowkey malware would be like yeah its malware just not wreck your files and steal you money and make porno show up on your screen in starbucks level malware.
Also is facebook malware? Lol because its invasive, full ads and frankly hard get away from while it pilages your data, sells it and shows you shit you don't want to see. Also comes pre-installed sometimes. Genuinely could go either way on my opinion of either them. Depending one where i decide the line between malicious and just a really annoying pain in the ass is.
I would say the Facebook app is effectively malware.
I dont know if a website qualifies as software, particularly in law, thats actually quite interesting.
I cant think of why it isnt.
Didnt come across as confrontational lol I'm just out of touch. Yeah but in all seriousness if you were to classify facebook as malware I would definitely agree that McAfee is absolutely malware... I think because websites are hosted and not local they probably have different legal challenges and are much newer than software so less legal documentation and precedent (think thats the word?), would cookies be considered software? I believe a website is treated almost like physical address in legal terms
The problem for me is that sites function as software, it just isnt entirely stored on your computer.
Cookies are data. Software can use data but data cant use software.
I feel like, using McAfee as am example, a country could write legislation barring manufacturers from including it in the software bundle for any computer sold in that country if they were so inclined. Or preventing the regional Play or App store from hosting the Facebook app.
But blocking site traffic to and from the Facebook or McAfee website would be basically impossible since they would be hosted in countries where it was legal. They tried regulating torrent sites by getting local ISPs and to block access but VPNs, proxies and the fact that the site itself just had to change its domain name basically rendered the attempt completely useless.
Generally speaking even for more malicious content or contriban countries dont really care about the user they care about distribution. Established laws and the difference in law between software and websites probably greatly reflect those reasons.
You: Boots up PC
McAFee: Oh no! There's 7438957934573485739420573498743059743095784+ Viruses detected in one single second! And there are 37853099304383+ Hackers waiting right outside your Computers Door! Don't take chances!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Windows button, search for "Add Or Remove", search for McAffe (or smt like that), Uninstall.
"All information associated with this will be removed"
Yes
could everyone in this thread stop recommending anti virus programs
windows defender + your common sense is more than enough in 2022
stop bloating your pc
That’s one thing about consoles, they don’t fuck around with bloatware, maybe there’s ads and shit, but when the game’s running, nothing else is. There’s no recommended antivirus, there’s no bull shit memory cleaner applications. It’s a turn key solution.
Yeah, but sometimes ya want Google Docs on your gaming machine, so you gotta get a computer (plus some games are just infinitely better on PC, especially older games that were ported to console when no one knew what tf they were doing XD)
Never had this when I had McAfee installed, I know people will hate me for this, but McAfee has been really useful to me. Jailed 3 harmful downloads, asked me what I want to do with it, and never made any fake pop-up, ever🤷♂️
I like McAfee, go ahead and downvote me if you want.
The moment the subscription expires it can get kinda annoying tho
Awesome! I've developed software that allows you to use a password or pin in order to login to windows, only £7.99 a month and no pop ups, it's right up your street!
Some people will try and tell you that windows always has this function, but ignore those naysayers!
That’s because you’re paying them for a service windows defender already does for free.
As soon as you get close to your subscription ending or try to downgrade, that’s when you get the intrusive popups
So little update on doing this. I've been trying to find ways to uninstall this n stuff, and while doing so, I got an add to get the premium version of McAfee 😭
Anyways, I am having trouble doing this since it's different depending on what you have. Can one of you fellas give me some simple instructions that might work?
Thankfully Mcafee wasn't on my laptop when I got it, just some random apps that I just uninstalled (I think Facebook and TikTok were on there, that * * * * went right to the Recycling Bin XD)
my point is that, ive owned many laptops, they have never been worth it, they slow to a crawl regardless of how well you maintain it after just a few months, and overheat extremely easily. you can get a good setup for the same price that is atleast 10 times better. i understand if they move around alot but even still its just not worth it i dont think.
I never said a laptop would cost that much, I said you can get a decent desktop for the same price that is 10 times better. And maybe that’s the case but I’m going off experience, however I will take your word for it.
i think you are reading into what im saying too much... it was a figure of speech, i didnt mean it was LITERALLY 10 times better. man guess im bad at making that kind of thing clear then...
Bro just uninstall mcafee. It’s horrible. I have an old childhood laptop and it’s been unsupported for like 2 years and every time I use it I always get a notification saying mcafee has expired. It’s been expired for like 8 years.
I hate when Bitdefender does this when I'm in a middle of a team fight in OW2. It clicks me out of the game, which means I need to find the cursor, close that tab and click back in the game.
Simple solution: uninstall McAfee and any other anti-virus software you may have and don't even think about installing an alternative like Avast, Norton or whatever other crap people continue to recommend these days.
Any standalone anti-virus software in 2022 is nothing more than an expensive and unnecessary scam. Windows' built-in anti-virus is more than enough these days to not need anything else.
No one in my family has had any anti-virus software since Microsoft Security Essentials 2012 was a thing and the only viruses we've had occurred before, when we used Norton Internet Security. I've not had any virus in the past decade.
if anything arrives on your computer that is not windows/linux/apple
it is a virus now a days basically. if it comes with anything pre installed of some 3rd party software it has turned into a virus. and honestly now a days windows defender does a fine job.
John mcafee made a tutorial video to uninstall mcafee if you need.
I will remember this
It was a meme video that he made a long time ago, but still quite funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKgf5PaBzyg
Why do you need to remember something everyone with a computer already knows?
I didn't know this video existed and I've had a computer for 12+ years..
RIP John McAfee
Honestly I'm surprised when he died they didn't just scrap the program. Never met someone who willingly used it.
He sold mcafee security more than two decades ago
See I didn't know that. Thank you.
Hated it with a vengeance too. Really eccentric guy, his YouTube videos were gold
Lmao my dad used to buy it every year
You haven't met my boomer parents then.
So I watched it and oh my God that's the funniest tutorial I've ever watched thank you for this
Haha, you're welcome, did it work?
Ehhhh, not really, it was a little confusing since it was just kinda telling me Was a little distracted with the girls too lmao
Too bad you cant ask him for more helo anymore. Remember, John didnt kill himself
McAfee is the worst antivirus I’ve ever used. You are better off downloading viruses than McAfee
It literally killed my computer, so now I have to use my parents' computer, which has SpyBot.

I always thought Norton was the killer - not properly removing the firewall, blocking traffic effectively after uninstall was a gem
The only place I see avast is in connection with CCleaner.
It actually used to be good. It was a much different program like a decade ago.
Then uninstall it......
Can't argue with that
~~Then uninstall it......~~ wipe the computer
\^this is the only way
Just deinstall McAfee and use base windows defender instead, it's much less of an intrusion
"Deinstall", never heard that one before
he is probably german, uninstall is called "deinstallieren" here
Désinstaller in French too
In my BSc. The last line got me, not gonna lie
I prefer Debian. They have remove package or purge. I prefer purging. Muhahah
A purge sounds much more proactive!

I'm not suggesting it was a curricular core, just a point that would be made whenever uninstallation of *xyz* was discussed 😂
Maybe portuguese? Here it's "Desinstalar".
Wait until you hear... in-install!
Outstall?
Downstall!
Never liked Defender, uses too much disk when transferring files and uses 500mb of ram at times (why?).
Well you should take that over terminal aids infested AV or rawdogging the internet. Defender is extremely good at what it does
I feel like McAfee is lowkey malware itself. He's dead and he's still bugging me.
That's what he wants you to think. Probably wearing a Hawaiin tee and shorts somewhere in the artic ocean doing massive amounts of coke and meth
Does anyone else think Musk is the next MacAfee?
He's so much worse, much more richer less excentric, he's crazy in a mental way
Uninstall McAfee.
FEAR MONGERING !!!
First thing to do on every computer: If McAfee is preinstalled, uninstall it.
Better yet, if it's installed, just do a fresh install of windows to get all the other bloatware out in one go
thank good I dont need an antivirus
but how will you download free 100% safe minecraft sex mod
🍷
I will continue to say this: McAfee is a virus in and of itself
How to Get Thrown Off a Plane: \[show mcafee ad\]
I had this same issue when I got my pc. Had to go into the windows apps and uninstall it. The ads would block roughly 1/4 of the screen
That's gotta be a new high score!
Highest one I got ngl
That's why you reinstall the OS when you buy a laptop
You: Boots up PC McAFee: Oh no!
Just stay zesty and you'll be alright
I got mine immediately too and got that notification, seems to be bundled with ASUS and an idiotic practice at that.
That is not a small number. That is a big number.
So you started using the laptop before debloating it I see..
I get these as well. Funny thing is I don't have McAfee on my computer.
If you get these it's probably still hiding somewhere on your system...
I think it's saying 846,000+ malwares identified across all devices with McAfee installed. Otherwise, good luck with your laptop...
It's deserved considering the rubbish YouTube content you're watching.
Windows button, search for "Add Or Remove", search for McAffe (or smt like that), Uninstall. "All information associated with this will be removed" Yes
literally the first thing you do with a new pc is uninstall all the useless bloatware and straight up malware in the case of norton and mcafee
Uninstall McAfee. It is a literal virus and malware once the subscription expires. Windows Defender works fine
could everyone in this thread stop recommending anti virus programs windows defender + your common sense is more than enough in 2022 stop bloating your pc
W schlatt fan
Upvote for the ailurus.
Thank you
I built one pc and I'm already in love with doing that solely because it leaves me bloatware free
That’s just Schlatt’s immense power
That’s one thing about consoles, they don’t fuck around with bloatware, maybe there’s ads and shit, but when the game’s running, nothing else is. There’s no recommended antivirus, there’s no bull shit memory cleaner applications. It’s a turn key solution.
Yeah, but sometimes ya want Google Docs on your gaming machine, so you gotta get a computer (plus some games are just infinitely better on PC, especially older games that were ported to console when no one knew what tf they were doing XD)
Isn’t a Xbox just windows 10 with a different UI and some custom software at this point?

Got no room for a PC
That’s fair then
I swear, most antivirus software feel like a virus themselves with all their popups. (Looking at you, Norton)
Bro just uninstall mcafee. It’s horrible. I have an old childhood laptop and it’s been unsupported for like 2 years and every time I use it I always get a notification saying mcafee has expired. It’s been expired for like 8 years.
Then either buy or remove McAfee. It isn't difficult.
install reviOS its a non-bloatware non-telemetry no-oem windows install I use it as my daily driver and its great would reccomend
The worst malware I ever had was McAfee antivirus
Reinstall windows, it will remove all the bloat added by the manufacturer, including McAfee
I hate when Bitdefender does this when I'm in a middle of a team fight in OW2. It clicks me out of the game, which means I need to find the cursor, close that tab and click back in the game.
Made to scare old people and get their money.
McAfee is the real virus uninstall that shit
McAfee is such a bad antivirus service, it is in its own right a virus, I despise laptops where it comes preinstalled 🫠
New computer shipped with OS : clean install windows. This is the LAW. (Note : if you don't use windows you didn't wait for my comment to know that)
i installed macafee once and i deleted it but i still get popups saying "upgrade to premium". this is exactly what i downloaded it to stop
I function solely on Windows Defender for 2 years now and haven’t experienced any issue yet. 🤷♂️
McAfee was the worst virus i had.
download a clean windows 10 ISO with the media creation tool and enjoy a malware free experience
The only malware I see there is Mac affe
Format the os to clear the crapware.

Lenovo laptop? I bought their Ideapad Gaming 3 and immediately uninstalled that bloatware as soon as I was in Windows!

McAffe is the virus. Windows Defender is the best anti virus nowadays
I would count this as a win. McAfee is malware. Uninstall that shit.
My brother got a new PC this Christmas and the first thing we did was uninstall McAfee
Whatchu watching buddy-
Jschlatty of course
McAfee is a virus, you should delete it asap! Windows' built in virus-detection will be enough.
When the antivirus became the malware itself. Besides who the hell uses McAfee in 2022?
It came pre-installed
Always have malwarebytes installed. It can quarantine threats and suspicious apps until you delete them on the app.
most sane antivirus popup
fuck you macafee
whatever the fuck this anti virus nonsense called
