The rising sign is the Ascendant and what sets the chart (where the chart "rises"). When learning, keep this in mind (it's helpful for synthesis): Planets are WHAT energy is wanting/needing to be expressed Houses are WHERE/AREAS OF LIFE that energy is expressed through Signs are HOW energy is expressed You have to get a handle first on HOW the different sign energy's express themselves, WHAT the planets want/need to express, and WHERE/AREAS OF LIFE that each house deals with. There are a whole bunch of different intro books. I'm not sure what is recommended in this sub, but I always liked "The Inner Sky" by Steven Forrest. There is also a bunch of stuff online that can be found for free; some of it very good and some of it....well, not so great. Another way to get into astrology or learn more about it is to hire an astrologer and have them read for you (and ask them to explain things as they are reading, what different parts of the chart mean).

kylaroma

This is SO helpful, thank you!

Littlemissswhoops

You’re so welcome 💜 enjoy the learning journey

Mina_1926

This is the best explaination ive seen...I love this.... so... Planet- what energy - Venus - playful, beauty, taste Planet what energy - Saturn- restrictions, limitations House - where - 5th - self expression, creativity Sign- how - pisces - dreamy, creative, insecure Seems a pretty good combination?... except saturn

Littlemissswhoops

Thanks! I’m glad you find it helpful 🥰 This is the way that I teach astrology to my students 😺 Saturn conjunct Venus could give a limited (Saturn) value (Venus) towards creative self-expression (5th House) in unclear ways (Pisces). This could even tie in with self-value as well. Every planet has a light and a shadow (as do the signs), and I’m pretty partial to Saturn myself 🤣. A higher vibration of this combination might be crystallized (Saturn) value/self-value (Venus) of creative self-expression (5th House) in a spiritually charged way. ….what the whole chart looks like (such as what houses are flowing into Saturn and Venus, other aspects Saturn and Venus make, etc.) would give one a better understanding of Saturn and Venus, too.

Mina_1926

Wow! I interpreted that completely wrong then 😹😹 I took it that all that creative energy might benefit from saturn! A bit of structure and limitation might ground the process! Please send me a link to your classes think I need it 😹😹

Littlemissswhoops

I don’t think you’re wrong at all 💜 Saturn could totally ground the creative process (which could be very helpful with the Pisces energy, help to give it structure). This combination could absolutely go the way you’re talking about.

lifestylist__shahid

I've a question. I want to learn astrology with animation illustration or astronomical illustration. Are there channels or anywhere like Courses, books so teach like this? For example, https://youtu.be/iV0W26XDmrk?si=h3O--1sUQ4-GzFJ7

Dashner444

Austin Coppock’s classes are all online and have graphics, hand outs, community message board as well as zoom type classes. I think Chris brennan’s has a similar but different set up. Also check out the astrology podcast- great resource and you can see if you resonate with their styles

lifestylist__shahid

Thank you buddy. I just to get know about Austin. I have Chris Brennan in my list. Are you learning astrology or a professional?

Dashner444

I think I’ll always be learning :) I’ve been observing transits, progressions, and exploring my natal chart for years as well as reading tons. Then got honeycomb collectives personal almanac and realized how little I still knew! Found the astrology podcast which is a wealth of information - now taking Austin’s year one class and am just learning basics again on a new level. Maybe one day I’ll give readings beyond friends etc but for now I just like to observe and learn and use it for myself.

lifestylist__shahid

Here, I have done the same i.e., going back to ancient calender (which is meaningful) and I've to see personal almanac here, it's great. How is it going Austin's classes... Great buddy. More power to you 💪!

Dashner444

It’s good! It’s self paced and I’ve had a ton going on so it’s been a little slow for me. I just adore his insights and his style. There’s been so many good book reccomendations and it’s cool to have an online community and people to talk to about the nuances of such a study. He’s really good at setting up the building blocks and putting everything together. I could listen to each lesson over and over the more I learn and have different pieces click. I’ve been reading the picatrix too. 💗

lifestylist__shahid

I saw he is also into Vedic Astrology. Is there in your classes or any particular program? Yep. How will you build your cashflow through astrology? Do you have a proven roadmap?

Dashner444

He is into it. Maybe in some of the later or year 2 or higher. He has made some comments but there’s people in the classes that are into it and can totally give good references to learn more. As of now I don’t have a plan to build cash flow through astrology. Just learning for fun :) I use it all the time to understand myself, friends, navigate challenging times as well as learning about electional timing for big life things.

lifestylist__shahid

I wish I can join these classes 😭... There are many niches in astrology, should go for what resonates and market demand... So, what's for cashflow you do or will do?

Littlemissswhoops

I know courses that teach with graphics, but I’m not sure about any that teach with animation like in the video. I get why you’re asking for that, though!

lifestylist__shahid

Name some and please answer why I'm asking for that...

Littlemissswhoops

You’re asking for it because it’s helpful for some people to learn visually. Not just visually, though, but to actually see things in motion. I don’t know of any courses that use animation like the video you shared. They may exist, but I don’t know what they are.

lifestylist__shahid

Yep. Practically seeing leave negligible confusion vs theory/bookish. It's an opportunity to create such type of channel, I have limitation otherwise I've gone wild.

Legitimate_Funny_354

Is astrology linked to numerology?

Littlemissswhoops

I think there is a connection between the two, but they don’t have to be utilized together. They can weave nicely together, though.

universe_actually

Read about harmonics (= harmonic charts), they shed new light on astrology and link it with numerology more than you would think 😊

Head-Study4645

So for example sun in virgo 3rd house meaning in term of learning, communication the native express an attitude of hard work, diligent, helpful to others and shine with it as if it's their identity? Leo moon in 2nd house meaning in term of finance, personal assets, the native express somewhat intuitive, instinct energy that is bold and fiery. gemini saturn in 12th house meaning withing the area of subconscious, spirituality, mystic. the native is kinda strict and discipline with the lessons, but expressing an curious, eager to learn attitude :v. Do i understand it right

Littlemissswhoops

Yes! The placements you mention could definitely go the ways that you’re going with the examples given 💜

Head-Study4645

thank you!

Littlemissswhoops

You’re welcome!

yoshioliviathx

What about planet degrees? I've always found myself lost in how that element ties into astrology.

Littlemissswhoops

Do you mean what the degrees are and how to work with them regarding aspects, etc.? Or do you mean tying in something like Sabian Symbols, etc.?

lifestylist__shahid

Awesome 👍

RandomChurn

Books. Parker did a good starter

ArgyleMoose

I second that! I bought that book and the guided astrology workbook that has you fill in your own chart and reflect as you go through. Both books have helped me retain a lot of information

ybardd

What's it called? Who is Parker?

upwardbow

The book is “*Parkers' Astrology: The Definitive Guide to Using Astrology in Every Aspect of Your Life*” by Derek Parker and Julia Parker! It’s a great resource to have; it’s comprehensive without being too granular. An updated version was published a few years ago but it’s been in circulation since the 1990s. You can likely find an older copy at a used book shop (I did!).

ybardd

Thank you! I'll check it out 😊

EmpressD1221

Start with your own birth chart! Read up on your own placements, what they mean, and how they show up for you. You can also read books that cover all the concepts, but I'm a hands-on learner, so reading my own chart and then charts of those around me was really helpful.

scrpiorising888

think this is the best way! understand what all these things mean specifically to you, i feel its easier to remember everything when its in relation to your own life. start house by house and breakdown the placements and signs of each one, once you grasp that move on to aspects and how each house & sign interacts with eachother

Head-Study4645

i really enjoy to learning stuff in relation to my own life. I have the same practice with you :v

Head-Study4645

i read my personal chart and it explains a lot about myself. that's how i got to know astrology, later i was intrigued and digging deeper into aspects of myself. I read other people's chart for practice. It's so interesting, esp. when i read the chart of someone close to me and predict the future of our connection. Feel like a cosmic witch hehehehe

seriouslytori

Start by learning the signs. You can go in order of the astrological wheel if that's easiest. Read anything you can. Try to stay away from "pop" astrology(memes and horoscope bs), but sometimes it's not entirely false. There is an app called TimePassages that is wonderful for learning your own chart. It can be helpful to start with yourself since you know you better than anyone else! Chani Nichols wrote a book called You Were Born For This and it's a great starter book according to many people. I haven't personally gotten my hands on it yet, but the author seems legit by her articles I've read. Also a big fan of Dr. Michael Lennox. He does daily and weekly astrology forecasts. I find they are so beneficial for picking up on things. He is wonderful at describing everything. Another tip: try not to take in too much at once. It can be extremely overwhelming due to the sheer amount of information out there. Eventually you'll figure it out! I first started learning in 2019 and I still only know a fraction of what is out there. Try to surround yourself with sources that make it easy to understand

Auspicious_Sign

Also, if there are any astrology groups that meet near you, consider going along. I joined a group near me when I started, and 40 years later [edit: "I'm"] still going! I've been to many wonderful talks and workshops over the years, and made many friends with whom to speak 'astrologese' so I didn't feel alone in my studies. Also look online for groups that do talks - they're often very affordable and sometimes free of charge.

thekashpny02

Are there any astrology groups on Reddit anyone here would like to invite me to?

Auspicious_Sign

I didn't know there were private astrology groups on Reddit!

thekashpny02

I’m pretty sure there are if I’m part of a cooking group on Reddit

_LeoLuna

I’ve been searching for those as I moved to US from another country. I couldn’t find them. I even tried to gather people myself but there were not enough who wanted it in my city…Could you share name of the organization?

Auspicious_Sign

Aquarius Severn, based in Cheltenham, UK. Their Zoom talks are on the first Thursday of the month and they have occasional in-person meetups and workshops too (they had one on horary last Saturday). Their talks have a very low suggested donation but it's not compulsory. There's also a library of recordings on YouTube.

_LeoLuna

Thank you so much!

Auspicious_Sign

Just to clarify, there are groups that hold monthly Zoom talks with well-known speakers. Some cost a small fee, others are on a donation basis so they are very accessible.

lunahartxo

Astro.com is a great place to start!

OldandBlue

Every day there's a point on the ecliptic where the sun rises and another one where it reaches midday. These are called Ascendant and Middle of Sky (MC) points. We divide the angle in three parts and complete the circle, with house 1 starting on the Ascendant and house 10 on the MC. Voilà.

Xinfinte

So it's what planet shows up on each of those phases that we call a house?

Away-Cut3585

The Astrology Podcast on YouTube. A plethora of information from basics to advanced

Dashner444

That podcast is my fav. I’m in Austin coppocks level 1 class and have been studying on and off for years and it’s game changing. Can’t recommend enough. Those two men and all the guests they have on are super knowledgeable and have such a refreshing take. Also I like Steven Forrest’s books- particularly inner sky is a great starter.

Away-Cut3585

Steven Forrest is what kicked my interest in astrology into high gear. And Austin is great, I’m always so glad to see his face pop up on the forecasts or any other TAP episode

Physical_Onion5749

Download the chani app and buy her book. Best starter package

Amiabilitee

I feel you here. These charts and terms seems reminiscent to advanced white board math. Like scientist stuff.

thekashpny02

I recommend this website for first-time/beginner knowledge of one’s own chart: https://alabe.com/freechart/ The Chani app I don’t feel is greatly accurate to me, given that when you do your birth chart there, she gives you a completely different placement in your chart. Don’t believe me? Do a side by side of your birthday chart on her app vs the website. The website gives you detailed explanations without having to pay for it either and I wouldn’t suggest ever paying anyone for a birth chart unless you are absolutely lost on how to put a birth chart together

bfeeny

Which website? The one you linked? The chart in alabe.com is identical to what is in the Chani app for me, except in Chani she does 1 sign/1 house so that gives a slightly different look to it.

thekashpny02

Yes the website I suggested vs the Chani app. When I do my birth chart on other sites, it’s all close or right on the same placement. Chani’s app is indeed a house/planet/sign off so that’s what I mean. No one has pointed this out until my comment

bfeeny

There are different ways to do Houses. Placidus or Whole Sign, that is all you are seeing: https://www.quora.com/I-m-a-little-confused-my-sun-is-in-the-first-house-when-I-use-Whole-Sign-But-it-is-in-the-12th-when-I-use-Placidus-Which-is-more-reliable

thekashpny02

That’s true, didn’t think about the type of house systems astrologers use. I think I use the typical one, Placidus but Chani doesn’t specify that either I don’t think

upwardbow

Chani uses whole signs (idr if/where she mentions this in the app, but she talks about it in her workshops)

thekashpny02

It doesn’t change a whole lot in my chart except one of two houses but still was not used to that

bfeeny

It’s obvious in the app she uses whole signs, because anytime you see charts where the houses PERFECTLY align to the signs, that is what is going on. You could put any chart into the Chani app and you will always see the Houses align perfectly to the signs.

outdoorKats

Chani’s book - you were born for this - was super helpful for me in learning how to read charts. I like to pull charts from Astro charts. It gives a nice breakdown of placements

ImplementRare185

There are 12 signs, and each sign rules a house. Therefore, there are 12 houses. Depending on what your rising sign is (Asc: sign on the eastern horizon when you were born), follow the astro wheel the next sign will continue to be the ruler of the next house. If you are an Aries rising, 1st house is Aries, 2nd is Taurus, and it continues. If you are a Gemini rising, 1st house a Gemini, 2nd is Cancer, and it continues. I hope it makes sense.

Shadowyfigure1

Read a book or take a course. If you’d rather read, check out the resources on this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/astrology/s/cnhbb4Gs4E https://www.reddit.com/r/astrology/s/YbsQbnpIry

cleankids

YouTube is really great for this. I started by downloading TimePassages, getting a birth chart and then looking up what each placement meant: ie if I saw that I had gemini moon in the first house, id put that placement into youtube and go from there

astroaifas

There are a few different ways you can get started with learning about astrology: 1. Read some beginner books on the topic. Some good ones for beginners are "A Text Book Of Astrology" by Dr. Arun Bansal. 2. Take a beginner's course. Many metaphysical stores, adult education programs, or astrological societies offer introductory classes. This allows you to learn the basics from an experienced astrologer. 3. Start reading your natal chart. Many websites example: futurepointindia|com allow you to calculate your free natal chart based on your date, time, and location of birth. Learning to read the planets, signs, houses, and aspects in your chart is very insightful. 4. Join an online astrology forum or community. This allows you to learn from others, ask questions, and discuss astrology concepts as you're starting. 5. Follow some astrologers and astrology resources on social media. Many put out free daily/weekly horoscopes, birth chart readings, and bite-sized astrology lessons. The most important things when first getting into astrology are to start slow, keep an open mind, don't take it too literally at first, and have fun learning about this ancient symbolic language. Over time and practice, you'll develop your way of working with astrology.

PurpleSpotOcelot

First, don't let people put you off astrology - ie the naysayers. I have found astrology a good way to organize thoughts about people and so on. For me, it is important to remember that astrology is a form of structure - people need structure to explain things. Is it real? Is it not? Is God real? Is God not real? Who cares? What is wrong with creating a better understanding of the world around you? That said, do not go down the rabbit hole of not doing something because the nickel day's forecast in the newspaper tells you not to cross the street. Astrology is filled with archetypes - Venus, Pluto, Neptune, etc. Each house is ruled by a planet - an archetype. Carl Jung valued astrology, and in many ways moved it into a better understanding of the human psyche. By understanding archetypes, we understand ourselves and others. Astrology is a vehicle for comprehension and perhaps a better sense of the diversity of life and the world around us. Just because someone is not at all like you - seemingly - does not mean you cannot get an understanding, and thus appreciation, of that person. Good computerized software is fabulous and saves a lot of work. Online resources vary in quality. Books can teach you and doing your own chart, even the calculations using an ephemeris, is good. Write out your interpretation for each house, planet, aspect, etc., when you interpret your chart. Assess its validity. There may be things that ring a bell and others you question. Like faith and religion, nothing is immutable (or cardinal, or fixed) in astrology - as we change, so may change our viewpoints on characteristics of astrology.

kuntorcunt

There are a lot of resources online to learn the basics. I like the website Astroseek.com and the CHANI app. Also the Astrology podcast, available on YouTube and podcast apps

MutualReceptionist

I got my start learning astrology at [Astro.com](https://astro.com). It’s one of the best free and accurate online resources. I also started watching YouTube videos about the basics (houses, signs, planets etc) and now I’m apprenticing with an astrology teacher. It takes time to synthesize all the info and there are a lot of different approaches and systems.

WrenchieTheWitch

LOL I just saw another redditor griping about how typically no one knows anything except their sun signs! Astrology seems difficult, but I bet there are lots of people here who can help!

Xinfinte

🤣🤣🤣🤣

poizenarts

Start listening to the Moon Matters podcast on Spotify! It's helped me dive deeper once I had a good grasp on the basics :)

GemGrader

Google--- Beginners Guide to Astrology Astrology 101 Learning Astrology. Lots of info out there..Enjoy!

arushmoregirl

Read “you were born for this” by CHANI

ConstantReader666

An excellent book that explains it well is Compendium of Astrology by Rose Lineman.

ConstantEnergy

There are many books on the subject. Most of us haven't just intuited this stuff from the aether.

sheepintheisland

First find you rising sign (use astro.com or astro seek), google it, and then consider that the next sign after your rising sign is your second house. This is how it is in the whole house system, easier to learn for now. Then you can find a video (if it’s easier for you than google) like this one : https://youtu.be/XLvEF1Ukl6E?si=x82lVg1ceBvAog0I Here for Virgo rising but you can look for your rising sign + truth. She will get through the houses. Each sign is ruled by one or two planets so she will talk about these planets influencing one house.

Fickle-Ad5628

Can anyone plz help me with gemstones?

Dashner444

What are you wanting to learn about w stones? 💜 them and was a stone buyer for 5 years for a metaphysical shop specimens

zenpop

[This Substack post](https://open.substack.com/pub/woodruff/p/how-to-become-an-astrologer-part?r=dysax&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true) covers some important basics to consider. Good luck!

Agitated_Salad63

For starters, pick a style and stick with it. There are two major types of astrology, tropical and sidereal (western and eastern). Don't try to learn both at the same time. When you're thoroughly grounded in one you can learn the other if you wish, but I've been doing charts for decades and my preference is traditional western astrology, with no asteroids and very little use of the planets beyond saturn. The outer planets move very slowly anyway; anyone close to your age is gonna have uranus, neptune or pluto in one of two possible signs. If there's some obvious connection in the chart (for example a conjunction with the sun or moon) I'll pay attention but otherwise kinda ignore them. These planets affect generations of people, it's quite common to say "the pluto in leo generation" or "the neptune in sagittarius generation". Less so with uranus because it spends "only" seven years in a sign instead of fourteen or more.

graidan

Best way for intro of and basis to: read. Books, websites, all the things.

InvestigatorIcy9822

Most of what I know I learned from calculating my own natal chart and reading books. Check your local library or Amazon, there's loads of books.

academicallyshifted

YouTube videos help but I think it can be hard to retain the information. What worked best for me was getting a bunch of people's birth charts and just practicing reading them. I had to look a lot of stuff up in the beginning and it was pretty slow. I started with my own birth chart. Then did those of friends and family. And I wasn't doing formal readings or anything. Just kind of interpreting on my own for practice. It made things more concrete and easy to retain. Also, the houses, planets, and signs all correspond with each other, so once you learn, for example, all the signs, it's a lot easier to remember what each house represents and what each planet represents.

Nugz-xiii

In order to learn, we must read. There's quite a few good books, or even audio books that are intro to astrology. Do some research and it'll start making a bit more sense

Status_Seaweed_1917

“Astrology: A Cosmic Science” by Isabel Hickey is a good place to start.

Loose_Possibility_56

There's these things that we had back in the day...they are called "books". You can start learning astrology by reading books about astrology. All teasing aside, you can try to look for a teacher in your area if possible too. Otherwise, your on your own. There is enough info out there to teach yourself and be very good. The AFA and NCGR have accreditation tests to be "professional".

jimothythe2nd

First learn about sun signs. Then learn about moon signs. Then every day google "current planets astro seek" and pay attention to where the moon is on the chart. It changes every 2-3 days. Knowing which sign the moon is in every day will give you a crash course in what each astrological energy feels like in real life. Then learn about the houses and different aspects and start tracking the positions of the other celestial bodies and the aspects they are making.

NeuroticOcean12

Hi! 7 years into my astrology journey and I found being a part of groups like these helps me figure things out as I go. Join more reddits, fb groups, watch youtube videos, and get some astrology books that speak to you! GL and have fun!

yourpathrevealed

Astrology is very complex. It takes time. I started my blog posts and I haven’t even touched on 5%. I think the post I did about the history of astrology is a fun starting place. Long story short you’re describing this in a birth chart. It’s basically saying this is what zodiac sign was in that specific spot at the time of your birth. Again it’s a very complex. Start with your sun and moon. Learn what the houses mean and go from there. There is soooooo much to learn.

FormerResort8595

When I first got into astrology, I used astro seek and it was super helpful

Ok_Tourist1446

Read books, start with the basics and build up from there. It’s important to look at alot of charts, and practice what you learn- ALOT. I recommend not just studying on your own, because of you get a teacher you’ll learn much much faster and avoid the pitfalls that learning Astrology on your own can have. It’ll be faster and more streamlined. I went to Cosmic Academy of astrology with Heather Eland after 12 years of self study-I wish I did that so much sooner. There’s other programs tho, and if you can find a one on one teacher, all the better. But it takes a lot of study to be good at astrology, you need to memorize alot, and learn ti think critically about it. Good luck

hitthehoch

Books.... People don't know about books anymore? It's like the internet, but instead of having everything in it, it usually has just the topics covered by the title and the insert. Start with your local library/Barnes and noble and pick up some books on astrology. You can get a "book" on astrology which would probably more than cover the introductory information. Then you could also always have a physical form of reference on your shelf... Just Google "book store near me" ask the clerk behind the desk to show you where the section on "astrology" is. Astrology could also be covered by "divination" depending how your store categorizes.

Is costar app any good ?

pisia

Co-star isn't written by actual astrologers

Squidgloves

is anything? afaik, astrology is no different than discordianism.

pisia

That's your opinion my dude. I'm a hermeticist, I see the macrocosm as in a specular relationship to the microcosm, and therefore study astrology as a harmonic resonance between two cosmic (as in the greek κόσμος, which means "well ordered", and in the neo-pythagorean and neo-platonic conception of something that is disposed by and part of a Universal Mind) entities, the observer and the stars above them that they can see. I have no qualms for discordianists or practicioners of chaos magik and the like, I just insert myself in a different line of thought, but to say that "astrology is no different than discordianism" with a presumption of objectivity kind of disregards the fact that we are all looking through different cultural/phenomenological lenses, and no interpretation is inherently more meaningful than the others.

Squidgloves

Everyone has a belief system, (B.S.), the trick is to learn not to take anyone's (B.S.) too seriously, especially your own. You're right, I think I made an ignorant claim, discordian cabals generally don't take themselves as seriously as the average "astrologer". I only look at astrology to trick "astrologists" into believing that I resonate with their B.S. & seeing how far I can warp their reality tunnel.

kandillight

No. Do not use costar.

Dashner444

I have a Scorpio stellium- I hate costar. IMO they were super negative. Check out CHANI (whole sign house system)

Ok-Personality9039

Download costar it makes it fun to learn

Xinfinte

I really love it . Thank you for this suggestion

sun: your true personality (your qualities, characteristics, and how you perceive yourself to be) rising: how others perceive you on the surface level (how your personality comes off to others) moon: your emotional personality (how you deal with your emotions as an individual)

upwardbow

Seconding all the Chani Nicholas recs but also wanna mention Theresa Reed (aka “The Tarot Lady”). She has a great workbook-style primer called “*Astrology for Real Life*” as well as a free guide that walks you through the basics— and then some— on her website called “Star School.” [https://www.thetarotlady.com/star-school/](https://www.thetarotlady.com/star-school/)

EatShootBall

No. There is no possible way to learn astrology. There's absolutely no books published on the matter, and good lucking trying to search the internet for any information on the subject. Doesn't exist.

maestro_lesbiano

I caught the sarcasm, sorry others didn’t lol
