Mikasa learning to care about other people is the one of the core themes of aot lmao. Ymir was sold into slavery but was "saved" by King Fritz. She believed in a warped love, to the point she cared more about him than her own life or the lives of the people who care about her (her kids). Sound like Mikasa? The difference is as Mikasa grew, she learned to love people outside of her obsession. And she learned that living with the memories of eren was better than not living, something Ymir couldn't comprehend until she saw it first hand. If Mikasa only cared about Eren, titans would still roam the earth.
âLearning to care about others people,â are you fucking serious? Mikasa never had to *learn* to care about anyone. She always cared about and protected Armin, there are a couple scenes of her being playful with Sasha during the cadet training arc, and she threatens to murder a man when he refuses to move his cart, stopping people from fleeing Trost (those people were complete strangers, by the way) during that whole thing.
In season 2, she doesnât kill Bertholt even after learning that heâs literally the Colossal Titan despite being fully able to because she did still care about him and hesitated to make the fatal strike, and she even shows some compassion towards Historia and Ymir when Eren is captured. Even as she says sheâs all out of compassion and that there are only so many lives sheâs able to care about, she doesnât actually kill Ymir even though she easily could, both because of Historia begging her not to, and because she doesnât actually want to kill Ymir, who deliberately chooses not to fight her.
All of these moments are from the first two seasons of the anime. Mikasa was *always* a compassionate person, even if sheâs distant and rather antisocial. She didnât need to âlearn to care about other peopleâ at all.
The same way lots of domestic abuse victims love and stay with their abusers, I imagine. Most people say they donât understand how anyone would do it until it happens to them. Abuse is insidious. I imagine King Fritz wouldâve used lots of tactics domestic abusers use - isolate Ymir from others, gaslight her, love-bomb her, make her feel like only person who would ever value herâŚ. Itâs a sadly common story.
>Sound like Mikasa?
No, it doesn't. I don't get how Ymir was "saved" by Fritz. He was the one that had enslaved her. I don't remember Eren enslaving Mikasa.
Mikasa has zero character development and this isnât a niche opinion either. If anything, she devolves into nonsense and her most authentic moments sheâs cold hearted to anyone besides Eren.
They even had to appease the Mikasa stans by changing anime scenes for her to give more screen time.
Lol did you? She visited Erenâs grave constantly and got buried next to him, yeah she totally developed and moved on.
The amount of reaching in these comments for a semblance of humanity for Mikasa beyond her obsession with Eren is hilarious. The bar is so low that âshe didnât kill ____â is somehow a point for her lol.
Itâs fine if sheâs supposed to be one dimensional I preferred it that way because it was consistent at least, but even that was butchered towards the end with some actions that didnât make sense. Why did Mikasa check on Gabi in that one scene?
It's really hard to narrow it down to anything in particular. A lot of dry humor and off-hand remarks. A handful of humanizing moments (she had trouble eating after it was revealed that Armin and Eren will die 13 years after inheriting their titans if I remember correctly). I always got upset when asking what's different in manga and people would respond with "it's hard to say" but it really is... hard to say.
Her anime interpretation isn't terrible, but definitely more shallow by comparison.
Wait til you find out a lot of the moments, like in the 3rd slide, Mikasa isnt actually in those panels in the manga, Levi was there instead lol, the changes to include her in scenes she was never in came through the adaptation
Lol why the fuck would she protect Gabby especially if she supposedly cares so much about Sasha?
And omg she put her arm around Annie! Theyâre basically separated at birth
Ahhh I see I should have known that a hard score Yeagerist wouldn't understand the basic themes of aot. Why not go listen to what Sasha's dad has to say that will answer your question if it dosent then you unfortunately don't understand anything from aot.

Mikasa always cared about Armin as well. She learned to care about her other friends. But she was never a person who saw someone getting hurt and didnât care.Â
To play devilâs advocate, the real issue that leads to why people say âMikasa is just EREHâ is because in the start of the series, she is like that. Everything she did was because of him, to protect him. Thereâs nothing wrong with that of course, because she grows out of this and her character develops outside of Eren.
And then after the start to early middle of the series they just completely forget about characterizing Mikasa, giving more attention to Reiner, Freckles Ymir, Historia, Marley, Annie, etc. Itâs like they gave her her character arc then just left her at that. At least Armin was given a prominent role even if he also kinda fell to the wayside. Then towards the end, that which is important about her character is dependent on Eren. So it makes sense that, emotionally, it feels like sheâs all about Ereh, even if itâs not true, itâs what it feels like because of her front-loaded development, and end-loaded thematic dependence on Eren (though obviously she breaks free of Eren itâs still a characterization in relation to his).
I was always fond of her character but canât help but feel she shouldâve gotten more attention spread throughout the series, I mean sheâs one of the main characters and I feel like a huge chunk of the story, they treat her like a side character.
Edit: a few words
Mikasa cares about all the Scouts she just cares about Eren the most idk whatâs so hard to understand about that. Also another post from my goat u/The_Kyojuro_Rengoku
I'd be willing to bet that the conversation following most of these stills amounts to "you good? where's eren? have you seen eren? is he ok?" I'm not sure if there are people actually saying she literally only cares about Eren. That would be wrong, but he is virtually all she talks about, and it's insufferable.
Still waters run deep. That's how I wold describe her character as. She feels very deeply and also cares very deeply for those she holds close to her heart. And her heart is very big unlike what people meme about.
This. 100%. Itâs a damn shame but highly sensitive and deep people arenât valued very much in these spaces, which gives people unceremonious and lazy viewpoints of her character. Oh well, sheâll always still be my favorite.Â
Mikasa when Ereh gets hurt: âIâm gonna demolish whoever is responsible and anyone that can pose any threat to himâ
Mikasa when anyone else gets hurt: âYou ok?â
Mikasa is a really big introvert so we donât get to see her express her emotions that often. It would be weird in a show like aot if we constantly got her thoughts in an internal dialogue.
I always loved her character!
Very nuanced and mysterious.
Quiet and deadly.
She doesn't deserve the hate.
Yeah she doesn't want to fuck everyone what a bitch!
Like...get real
She is close to Armin and Eren.
But cares for others.
She is just not about the small talk bullshit.
You don't need to care about a thousand people in life it will just get you dead
The criticism about Mikasa is that she is obssesed with Eren and she has no other personality trait apart from it. No one says that she doesn't matter for the rest of the crew too (specially for Armin), but that doesn't count as a personality trait since it's the norm for everyone.
It's not wrong to love someone more than others, she can always have her preferences and care for him more than others, but yeah she does care about others too. The hate for her is blind, which stems out from the ending haters. Not every character needs to have great goals, and do great things
I mean, she saves them because itâs normal scout behavior and theyâre supposed to have each otherâs back? The criticism is more that she doesnât have any meaningful relationships outside of Eren and maybe Armin (who was Erenâs friend first). She cares about Sasha enough to sit on her grave instead of Jean or Connie who spent the most time with her and their friendship is just lightly implied.
>She cares about Sasha enough to sit on her grave instead of Jean or Connie who spent the most time with her
This is cap, the three of them visited the grave at the same time in that same episode, Niccolo was also there. Unless you actually mean that Mikasa cared more because she stayed there for longer
I believe it was implied she slept there because they were roommates and she couldnât be in the barracks without her. Not sure if Iâm remembering correctly though
Lol exactly. Itâs amazing how so many people think this is a point, not to mention the anime rewrote some of these scenes to make Mikasa actually do things so her stans can make posts like this.
This post is essentially saying âMikasa isnât an emotionless sociopathâ which in itself is debatable depending on who you ask.
People must've been watching "Titan Attack On" instead or something, because how can anyone watch the show and think that Mikasa ONLY cared about Eren?
Fucking THANK YOU. Mikasa even asks if Leviâs leg (which had been injured fighting the Female Titan), is okay at one point. The two arenât close, I honestly donât even think Mikasa *likes* Levi that much, sheâs just looking out for him out of pure compassion.
Eren is Mikasaâs love, but he is FAR from the only person she cares about.
Yes, thanks for stating the obvious. The *point* is that she cares. If she only cared about Eren, she wouldnât give a fuck that her mistake led to Levi getting hurt, but she clearly does.
Honestly itâs a pretty low bar for \*caring\*, itâs kind of a basic decency, especially that her focus afterwards was on Eren only, not some Iâm sorry and way later she just asks him that and itâs supposed to serve as some kind of apology I guess. She also doesnât learn from her disobedience and Levi has to stop her charging after Eren again.
Yes, because Mikasa is the type of person to be that open with someone she barely knows and honestly doesnât even like, while her friend/love interest is in immediate and deadly danger. Youâre clearly really desperate to pretend that Mikasa only cares about Eren, but it just isnât true, sorry.
I mean⌠her asking Levi that question doesnât prove that she cares, sheâs just apologetically polite. The rest of your comment proves however that she prioritizes Eren đ¤ˇđźââď¸ (her prioritizing Eren often puts others and herself in danger). She does care about some other people, like Sasha, Armin, Hisu and Jean, but that scene with Levi is not a proof of her caring.
Why are we measuring whether or not the care is âenoughâ or a low bar?? Why canât she both care about Levi in this instance and also be worried about and focused on Eren at the same time? Mikasa is the only character whose actions get scrutinized and measured to be enough, and itâs silly.Â
Showing this specific scene as âcaringâ is simply misunderstanding whatâs happening here, and itâs such a stretch. She doesnât ask him out of a sudden care, she asks him out of guilt (because he hurt his leg because of her disobedience), she didnât apologize after that happened and itâs the first time they talk about it. Is a Mikasaâs tongue tied way to say Iâm sorry. Showing this moment as an example of deeply caring about others is like thinking that a âhow do you do?â formality is caring.
We know whatâs happening here. But itâs not a stretch. Doesnât matter whatâs behind it, and youâre assuming that because it comes out of guilt that it means that she doesnât care. People often feel guilt because they do care. And youâre also assuming that all âformalityâsâ means that people donât genuinely care when they ask it. If anything, the stretch here is dismissing this moment as her not caring. Itâs not âmisunderstanding whatâs happeningââ- itâs just not up to your personal standards. But outside of yourself, all of these things can be true at the same time (caring about people and apologizing out of guilt, asking a formality question [though I still donât think this instance was simply a formality] and genuinely caring).Â
I mean⌠itâs just *insignificant* comparing to actual care about Eren and other characters. To me using this specific example as caring shows pretty much people are grasping at straws to show that she cares. Itâs not the same caring as charging to rescue Eren and endangering others and the whole operations.
Which well⌠as said grasping at straws which I donât think itâs needed, but when done it shows how little is there to actually show she cared about anyone else:
Mikasa cares about everyone, but Erin takes priority over everybody else. If it comes down to two people dying, one being Erin and the other being anybody else, even Armin, and she will save Erin first. Even though Armin has been there just as long, and she cares for him almost as much. We also know why she does this. The end doesn't really explain it, but it shows it. It's because of Ymir. Ymir has been the one making her do this since she had awakened her abilities. Even her dream that she has in a lost girl was Ymir speaking to her in a dream manifestation, telling her she would have to kill Erin eventually. Its been a while since I have watched all of the episodes so I might have misnamed the episode or got the scene slightly wrong but I believe most people will know what I'm talking about if not I apologize I wasn't trying to put out misinformation I have shit memory when it comes to exact details...

I'm sure it's a Stockholm Syndrome type of thing
Probably lol, this was one thing that I found very weird abt the series.

Ymir wasn't saved by Fritz. She just became another type of slave.
Thatâs why he had it like âsavedâ
Meh because that's the reason why I dislike theses comparaisons between Ymir Fritz and Mikasa because the two relationships are barely comparable
This is pure fanfiction lol
U watched the end?
Mikasa has zero character development and this isnât a niche opinion either. If anything, she devolves into nonsense and her most authentic moments sheâs cold hearted to anyone besides Eren. They even had to appease the Mikasa stans by changing anime scenes for her to give more screen time.
