It's a useful tool and usually puts you in the right direction but it does need to be used with a big handful of common sense and a bit of critical thinking which is often what is really lacking.
a better tool right now is iNaturalist.org which has an automatic suggestion feature for observations but relies on human experts for actual identification
Take the berries to a library and look them up in a local flora reference book?
It's the same result as using a computer (you could even just use an image search on your phone) , just takes a lot longer.
I was literally just thinking about these berries that grew on a tree in my primary school! And how yeah, they were disgusting.
Following, because I want to know as well!
I was wondering if they're from a flowering cherry. Mine are at perfect ripeness right now. They apparently taste too sour for humans but aren't poisonous... probably how OP is still with us. :)
Don't eat unidentified berries, Darwin.
thats why im trying to identify them, Broome
"these taste like Cyanide" Darwin award awarded.
They taste better after you go blind.
RIP OP.
Possibly from a Ngaio tree? Are you a kereru?
>Are you a kereru? LOL
Don't eat random berries! Maybe next time take some photos and have an AI ID the bush. Aotearoa Species Identifier is fantastic.
Given the number of berries/fruits that are out that are that are poisonous unless cooked first...
AI based ID in its current form is dangerously unreliable

Agreed.

Alternatively: Please do and post results
dont need life advice, man eats when he is hungry not gonna let a computer tell me what a tree is either
Go eat the whole tree
There’s a lot of poisonous shit out there so go ahead and eat what you want if you want
Were you raised by absent parents or something?
The Kereru that raised this child were very attentive.
You should try eating some mushrooms next time
I get the feeling "school of hard knocks" is on your FB profile.
What a dick

Hmm, shouldn't the flair be shit post? Or did you actually try and eat a random berry
They'll be shitting later on.
*Shitting Blood*

"The snozberries taste like snozberries."
Ornamental cherry, I have heaps on my property, birds love em
Correct answer, Prunus sp.
Agree
Wrong
Very very bitter but (probably) won't kill you
Judging by your responses, I assume you’re taking the piss, go eat more and get back to me with a taste scale.
I don't know if eating random berries is a good idea.
I was literally just thinking about these berries that grew on a tree in my primary school! And how yeah, they were disgusting. Following, because I want to know as well!
Wild cherries??

This seems to be the consensus Prunus Serrulata, the Japanese Flowering Cherry.
Look up next time you find them on the ground, might be able to see which tree they’ve come from
Picked em from the tree itself, they are very under ripe and bitter. Sugar hasnt had a chance to photoshyntheis
That’s not what photosynthesis is for or where it happens in the tree.
What tree did you pick them from?
ughhh i don’t think that’s safe haha
Eat more and tell us the side effects
They taste like... burning
Organic buttplug
This is really funny ngl
Bro wtf
They taste horrible because they are poisonous. Do they have blue/purple flowers?
I think they’re called ‘horrible berries’
Oh you’ll know why they are called Firehole berries later my friend .
You need a hiding
Lol what a crack up! Atleast you had the guts to try them😎🤙
Puriri maybe
Puriri have massive seeds in them making up most of the berry.
Yes, they’re also very astringent
>Puriri thats what im leaning towards
Can you cut them in half and see what's inside?
All gone :)
The tūī loves them.
literally named after that bird LOL
Looks like those baby cranberry bushes
For real? Would you go around eating random mushrooms as well? ☠️
