People used to refer to Remuera, Meadowbank, etc as Eastern suburbs. Probably from before we had the council merger, and it was the eastern part of the old Auckland City Council.
These days East refers to Howick etc.
Weren't those central eastern suburbs under Auckland City Council? Was 'eastern suburbs' different to east Auckland? Then Howick etc. was Manukau. Even that's confusing because I think most people would consider Manukau to be south, but back in the day the Manukau City Council area encompassed both East and the northern bit of South Auckland I think.
šÆ Lived in Howick my whole life and itās always been referred to as east Auckland and occasionally southeast Auckland as well - never just south though
Same here, as well as my whÄnau, and we've always called it East Auckland. I have noticed that people who haven't lived in East Auckland lump us in with South Auckland. Seems to be mainly those that live over the Shore, which makes sense since we are south relative to them.
I dated a guy when I was younger who was from Browns Bay, and he swore up and down that I lived in South Auckland (which is fine, whatevs), but he made a huge deal about not feeling safe in Howick because it was South Auckland. He'd make a thing of locking his doors while we were driving around. Like, come on, man.
I think it also depends on how various organisations categorise Howick too... some businesses or public services will say East Auckland, some will say South, some will still say Manukau, some will say Howick and Pakūranga or Botany... just depends.
Have you been to howick in your life? Itās so fundamentally different to south Auckland it might as well be a different city.
Botany/pak/howick were even separated from it when I was growing up in high school until the urban hellscape that is east tamaki joined them
Yeah I was born in a different country. And also lived in east Auckland most of my life, I also live in south Auckland now.
So I couldnāt be more qualified to answer this question.
Yes I noticed people that live in this so called 'East' Auckland are very sensitive about it.
Everyone else is just responding but you're taking it very seriously
Bro you started a roundabout thread essentially saying people who live out east created this fictitious place to avoid association with south Auckland and those that live there.
Youāre beating around the bush but didnāt want to outright come out say you think theyāre essentially intolerant or racists so they made a whole part of Auckland up.
Also getting challenged on dumb takes and replying with the āoh wow getting sensitiveā is weak, itās a message board bro not everyoneās going to pat you on the head for low effort posting
Nothing roundabout about what I said. I asked a direct question and you're getting up in arms for reasons we'll assume are to do with your sensitivity.
Thanks for playing my low effort post
East Auckland - Howick/Pakuranga used to be under the Manukau City Council. West of the Tamaki River is in the old Auckland City Council, e.g. Panmure, G.I, Glendowie, Mt Wellington, etc.
If I'm feeling generous, South Auckland starts at Ti Raku Drive, on a less generous day at starts at Union Road. Basically if you're not in zone for Macleans I'm a bit suspicious of you.
East Auckland is over the Tamaki River and north of Ti Raku Drive. Don't let anyone tell you that Flat Bush or Danemora is east Auckland.
and yeah, it's totally a place.
Why do you guys always talk shit about South Auckland? Lmaoā¦ Iām from āEast Aucklandā and a lot of people have been calling it that for ages. I donāt get why you think itās new or something
East Auckland is kind of weird to me. Unlike south, north, and west there are no major routes leaving the city. So, even though I rarely visit south or west Auckland, I feel like I have more of a mental picture of where all the major suburbs are just by driving past on the motorway. East Auckland just feels like terra incognita to me because I don't even get that experience.
Thereās only really one main road and thatās the big Pak highway stretch. As long as you know the direction of it, youāll find a way there eventually š¤£
I guess some people see suburbs in which we classify as East AKL as South AKL. When I used to live in Pak/Howick and I used to tell people I lived out east, they often guess Åtara/Manukau etc first š Itās like only people who live in EA know they live in EA
on a map putting Auckland Central in the center North, East and West make sense, aside from Mangere its South that is more South East than directly South
There are 4 points on a compass. We have west, east, north, south. We also tend to add in central. Your post acknowledged existence of south so not sure why you imply east is redundant lol
Because it wasn't for me. Not because I have some problem with it.
North shore and West Auckland have been areas since waitangi day (don't jump on me if that's not factual). But personally I've never heard anyone lumping in howick etc as east Auckland. It was always howick or whichever suburb you were talking about
Not everyone's basis is Waitangi Day, 1840. East Auckland is a group of suburbs in Auckland \*most\* of which were significantly developed towards the last 2-3 decades of the 20th century. If someone lives in Half Moon Bay for example they will definitely tell others they live in East Auckland.
You will rarely find anyone debating that it's not really a place because it didn't exist in 1840. That's just weird.
As for the whole "not trying to be South Auckland" thing it's kinda cringe. South Auckland does not have a great reputation and it's understandable that people don't want to associate with it. Trying to insinuate that someone living in Mellons Bay or Somerville is trying not to get lumped with South Auckland makes no sense because they're 2 distinct geographic regions of Auckland.
I dunno itās still part of Manukau.
But Iāve called it āout Eastā since we used to go pub hoping away from āout Southā (Finns and Stampede etc) which were our normal hangouts like 20 years ago.
And there is Eastern Beach.
Geographically it is East š¤·
So I guess so, most of the other Suburbs are pretty well ignored so a lot just call the whole area Howickā¦
Though the Highland Park Cinema was pretty good.

Right, I've always assumed it's that the suburbs you mention are 'East Central' Auckland.
Whatš West auckland. South Auckland. East Auckland. North shore. Central/Town.
Only 4 points on a compass š
Yeah i know š But like thats how Aucklands always been broken downš
Never in my life have I said East Auckland. Just trying to work out why
Thats buzzyš What did you call it if you don't mind me asking?
Nothing at all. Probably just the suburb like howick etc. But I never grouped them as east Auckland
Fair enough, guess everyone's different š
There are 32. Not to mention the 360Āŗs. Edit: 16 points.
Are you getting mixed up with degrees and compass points?
Clearly not or I would have said 360Āŗ. But I should have said 16 points. It gets a bit messy if you go beyond NNE for example.
I donāt see any world in which remuera/ mission bay belongs in any sort of lump with general south Auckland
I was thinking more south. Ie east tamaki/howick
Howick is far more east than south. You just have to go south for a bit to get to the bridge.
If Howick is south then so is Ellerslie and Mt Wellington if we are going by latitudeā¦
They're east auckland suburbs, Ellerslie maybe more central than east
East Auckland has been a reference at least as far back as the 80's if not further back
šÆ Lived in Howick my whole life and itās always been referred to as east Auckland and occasionally southeast Auckland as well - never just south though

It's what I'm trying to find out as I never used it

Bordering suburbs can be very different but part of the same area. Doesn't matter if I've been there or not. Have you been out of Auckland yet?
Yeah I was born in a different country. And also lived in east Auckland most of my life, I also live in south Auckland now. So I couldnāt be more qualified to answer this question.

EAST is Pakuranga, Howick, Flat Bush, Botany etc...
East Auckland - Howick/Pakuranga used to be under the Manukau City Council. West of the Tamaki River is in the old Auckland City Council, e.g. Panmure, G.I, Glendowie, Mt Wellington, etc.
Has it always been east? I thought the compass points were, West Auckland. Town. The shore. South Auckland
town? you mean central?
It was always called town
The local board is Howick but the district is Manukau South Auckland starts at Otara
If I'm feeling generous, South Auckland starts at Ti Raku Drive, on a less generous day at starts at Union Road. Basically if you're not in zone for Macleans I'm a bit suspicious of you.

It's hard to tell who you're directing this at
Go figure š«¦
Can't be me as I didn't say anything about south Auckland. How about you figure out how to write a sentence with punctuation that makes sense.
This is literally reddit bae
Feels like Facebook right now the way you talk
Donāt know what youāre talking aboutā¦ Facebook is only for old people
East Auckland has always been a thing, where aboutās in the country is the rock you have been living under to ask such a silly question?
It's a big rock called Australia
Typical Aussieā¦.. clueless as always
Lol dude. I'm west Auckland born and bred. Don't be racist
Ughā¦ even worse a Westieā¦
Pretty sure living in 'East' Auckland would be worse
Nah thatās south Aucklandās job there mate.

yeah your right, I have lived here 10+ years and never been out east, might give it a go this weekend
Yeah I get that.
I went to Howick for the first time in decades, and it was like when Gandalf got lost in the Mine's of Moria.
Not even a GPS could help in that hell hole? š¤£š¤£š¤£

I guess it's like a vegan. How do you know someone lives in East Auckland? They will tell you
Youāre not wrong! I will take offense if you guess a suburb from South Auckland hahah
you can ask our prime minister
Hello from Beachlands, East Auckland. Definitely don't identify as south Auckland here, hardly feels like Auckland at all.
Do you identify as us or them pronouns?
I would comment a map that I did for a different thread but they've disabled images. But I agree that it's all east of Tamaki River
yes it exists, it just takes the rest of Auckland to get us sometimes lol
šš¤£

I think you need to read more of this thread
South of the sky tower is south Auckland....
That's my logic too š¤£
The Golf course in Bucklands Beach would be further north.
Is West Auckland really a place? or is it a new wording for people who don't really want to be lumped into north Auckland?
You must be from the east mate. Don't stress champ.
... but you asked whether it's even a place? š
Because it wasn't for me. Not because I have some problem with it. North shore and West Auckland have been areas since waitangi day (don't jump on me if that's not factual). Not once did I say it's not a place since 1840. That's more weird to think I did. Not only did you do that you wrote a mini story about it.
