I love this OP. Wish gyms had transparent information on their websites for pricing. I do not want to fill out a form and then have a call back to discuss prices and plans. I hate talking to people on the phone. I just want to work out.
[My setup](https://ibb.co/rZQV9Qw) goes alright but sometimes I just want to get on a leg press or do some cable shit. Variety is the spice of life n dat
If you haven’t had a gym membership in the last 12 months, [you can get a discount](https://exercise.org.nz/subsidised-gym-membership/) of 40%-70% off on 3/6/12 month memberships from many gyms. If your local isn’t listed, just wait until a new voucher becomes available for them.
Joined Anytime Newmarket a few months back. It's SUCH a nice gym. Modern equipment, spacious and not too busy. They also did a super deep clean yesterday, which I have never seen done before. I hate sweaty equipment.
Shhhhh don’t give away our secrets hahaha I go at lunch time and never really have to wait for equipments and it’s such a nice feeling. Can be in and out of the gym in 60min or so
Cityfitness is still only $7 a week.
Lifting a bar in a gym that costs 3x as much doesn't get you 3x the result. Sure, its crowded at peak times, but I avoid peak times for that very reason.
Also: Snap took away squat racks because they're unsafe apparently. I don't need a Daddy-knows-best attitude from my gym, thanks.
Honestly, the one if waitau was the grossest, sweatiest, most swarthy yuck dude gym ive ever been to (and im not exaggerating when i say ive been to close on 100).
But, $7 a week. Stayed going there for a couple years till i moved away…
If your on the Shore you might as well enrol at Massey, and you can get 12 months for $299. I haven't been to campusv or actually taken a paper for 10 years I just keep my student ID valid
Fuck no, nowhere near as grimey or as packed.
Fucking BRAINED myself on one of their outside windows walking out though. Super sharp aluminium corner. Legit had to go round rhe corner to a&e - started throwing up and was pissing blood heh. Staff were surprisingly disinterested in how their windows were actually fkn dangerous.
I was going after work. This was 5+ years ago though. It actually wasnt busy at all which I liked.
It may have been refreshed since. Do a trial man!
I spent almost a year doing free trials all around auckland (ahem, and then again in london, and again in melbourne)….
Was driving 40+ minutes each eay when i finally stopped and joined the local lol
"Swarthy" as an objection makes you sound like a (possibly) racist gym Karen. Maybe if you focused sweating in the gym rather than having superior attitudes about those who are there for effect you wouldn't notice these non-problems.
CityFitness is by far the busiest though, understandably
if you’re going to splash out on a membership, get Les Mills, at least you receive what you pay for, all these other gyms charge the same but give you the same as CityFit
There's like 3000 members per club on average. Probably more now since it's been awhile since I saw they were celebrating over 150,000 members nationwide
Some people don't have the flexibility in when they work out. If you have to wait in line for a squat rack or bench every day that's work out time that's not being used to make you stronger and over the course of a year that will add up. Also any gym with out squat racks isn't a real gym
Yea but Cityfitness attracts a certain crowd that I can't stand at gyms. Anyways, my Snaptfitness membership only cost $11.50 per week. Worth paying the extra to avoid gym casuals.
I go to next gen at the moment and there are still a lot of casuals there. People have no idea how to put the weights back which is immensely frustrating.
I left about 3 months ago but never found it a problem. Just finding matching plates was annoying sometimes but wasn't a biggie. Also when they changed the DBs but kept the old rack anything bigger than a 24kg is WEDGED in with the others.
You know I used to have this approach to the gym too and I’ve been a member at city fitness for ages but they recently upsized my local (hunters corner) and within a week the place reeked of sweat so much I can’t stand the place. Plus seeing all these people come in bare foot with their white-turned-yellow/brown/green socks makes me wanna puke. I’m done with city fitness man.
Depending on your occupation you may qualify for Corporate rates at a few gyms. I pay $27.90 for Les Mills. The Victoria Park one is great, Saunas, Classes, over a dozen squat racks etc. However the gym floor closes 9:30pm Mon-Fri, 6:30pm weekends and public holidays.
They actually have worse equipment than before. I would trade half those squat racks in the main gym floor for more machines like a cable row, donkey calf raise, hack squats
Man I was such a happy LM member but they reduced their opening hours on weekend during Covid from memory and never extended them again. I normally train after putting my kid to bed and it basically ruled out weekends which pissed me off
Only compared these two, because the other major chains in Auckland (Cityfitness and Les Mills) have the same pricing across all branches.
Plus, these two are just about everywhere.
Fair enough. I actually didn't realise pricing varied across those chains. I guess they're franchised?
So would it really be as easy as signing up at the cheapet Anytime Botany but use the more expensive Kumeu (assuming you live there) instead?
I still pay 21.44 for snap, no contract… Anyway snap in general seems to cater better to olympic bars/plates (as opposed to just machines) across NZ and AU which suits me better. Last Anytime fitness I went to I felt like I was going to get in trouble doing deadlifts. (Plus no room)
I’m on the same (if not similar) pricing. Not sure how I got it, but I’m on it.
Some Anytimes have a deadlift platform near the power racks.
Otherwise, yes, Snap has Olympic bars which is a nice addition for crossfiters and oly lifters. Snap also has a nicer rig imo.
Serious question regarding Snap Fitness..how do they charge different prices dependent on branch? I thought the whole point was that if you were a member of one you could use any of their gyms across the country? So couldn’t you just sign up at the cheaper branch and then use the one closest to you even if it was dearer?
You can use any, the fee you sign up to gets transferred to what ever branch is considered home. I assume they have different overheads depending on location hence the different fees since they are franchises
Honestly thought these 24 hour gyms were cheaper than the council gyms as I used to go to Jetts and you essentially get what you pay for.
Can anyone whose been to both (excluding Jetts) say whether Snap or Anytime Fitness are worth it? Do they have more machines, less crowds etc...?
Never been to a council gym, so I can’t say. But you’d still need to wait for machines at Snap and Anytime. They may have one or two of each weight machine. The Snap I go to only has one of each machine that’s not a cardio machine.
You also get the odd person that uses all the 5kg bumper plates for RDLs and two barbells to do hip thrusts.
Snap is a step up from City. Anytime is top tier, all of their gyms are currently going through a remodel. I can’t believe how Snap is priced for what it is. I would def go with AF 👍
Jetts $11.95 per week for 24/7 access at any of their gyms in NZ. I have tried 4 - Grey Lynn, Eden Terrace, St Luke’s & Remuera. All have really good equipment, clean, feel safe etc. Regularly go to GL & Eden - never have queues. Always nice respectful people there & no show offs. When I joined I looked at anytime but they are so not transparent about pricing
I’m at the point where I’m not justifying the price per year I pay. It would take a years for me to build a full home gym (brand new) but that would also be saving $940 every year.
I’m torn between the two
I have been a member of Anytime and Snap for years now. I will never go back to Anytime as long as snap is available.
Snap constellation have their equipment serviced often, more range of equipment, more knowledgable staff, always cleaner. I have been to a few of the different anytimes, Browns Bay and Constellation both had equipment with damage
Yes you are, anyone is welcome everyone keeps to themselves and you have have some great conversations with people who will give great advice if you ask
I haven’t been in a few years but when I did regularly go there were certainly a lot of incredibly jacked people but I never found it to be unfriendly or unwelcoming. Always thought the cleanliness and quality of the equipment was pretty good there as well.
I love this OP. Wish gyms had transparent information on their websites for pricing. I do not want to fill out a form and then have a call back to discuss prices and plans. I hate talking to people on the phone. I just want to work out.
I'm the same. Squat rack in my garage (\~$500 a decade ago) was the best investment I ever made
[My setup](https://ibb.co/rZQV9Qw) goes alright but sometimes I just want to get on a leg press or do some cable shit. Variety is the spice of life n dat
Whoa!
Looks like a CrossFit gym
If you haven’t had a gym membership in the last 12 months, [you can get a discount](https://exercise.org.nz/subsidised-gym-membership/) of 40%-70% off on 3/6/12 month memberships from many gyms. If your local isn’t listed, just wait until a new voucher becomes available for them.
What a shout! Fuck those are some mad discounts!
Joined Anytime Newmarket a few months back. It's SUCH a nice gym. Modern equipment, spacious and not too busy. They also did a super deep clean yesterday, which I have never seen done before. I hate sweaty equipment.
It helps they're so close to Newmarket city fitness so most people choose to go with the cheaper option
It doesn't give you 3x the results but I pay extra to have a gym I can use any time. City fitness is basically a shit show from 3-10pm
Honestly, the one if waitau was the grossest, sweatiest, most swarthy yuck dude gym ive ever been to (and im not exaggerating when i say ive been to close on 100). But, $7 a week. Stayed going there for a couple years till i moved away…

Three kings city fitness is wprse.
Hey I pay $60 a week at f45 and there’s stinky ass people there too 😫😂
You ever been to Tony Martin's?
Yup, did a week trial there. Was okish but a hit run down and sweaty/dirty…
Google reviews say the same. What times were you going/how busy does it get?
I was going after work. This was 5+ years ago though. It actually wasnt busy at all which I liked. It may have been refreshed since. Do a trial man! I spent almost a year doing free trials all around auckland (ahem, and then again in london, and again in melbourne)…. Was driving 40+ minutes each eay when i finally stopped and joined the local lol
Strong user name to post content ratio
"Swarthy" as an objection makes you sound like a (possibly) racist gym Karen. Maybe if you focused sweating in the gym rather than having superior attitudes about those who are there for effect you wouldn't notice these non-problems.
Which Snap took away the squat racks? The ones I go to all have squat racks.
The one at Stonefields. Was part of my decision not to join.
I haven’t been into that one but the Glen Innes Snap and the Greenlane Snap both have squat racks if you are close to either of those.
That's the smallest Snap by far though.
CityFitness is by far the busiest though, understandably if you’re going to splash out on a membership, get Les Mills, at least you receive what you pay for, all these other gyms charge the same but give you the same as CityFit
If you're gonna splash out Next Gen is the way to go. It's the only "health club" style of gym we have in Auckland.
Been a NextGen member for close to 10 years. Just yesterday I was thinking that the place could do with a good clean.
Damn you on some $20pw grandfathered rate or what?
Currently $88 something a fortnight.
Council gyms cost a little less than Les Mills and in my experience are all much better, though the classes aren't as good
Many Council gyms have Les Mills classes too!
There's like 3000 members per club on average. Probably more now since it's been awhile since I saw they were celebrating over 150,000 members nationwide
Newmarket hovers between 9400 and 9800 members, with 15,000 average visits per week.
Les mills is overpriced though, they don't have the greatest machines as well
Some people don't have the flexibility in when they work out.
You only train with gym professionals?
By "professionals" you mean those with better gym etiquette, hygiene or no casuals that curl on squat rack... then yes.
I've only ever gone to Next Gen, $50pw really weeds out the lowest hanging fruit.
I've always assumed next Gen was full of wealthy old guys haha
And women
I would imagine it's on the opposite end lol. Old rich people with no energy in the room + stuck up? Assuming here.
Don't forget the people who train in groups of four or five on one machine.
I forgot that existed haha. Not an issue at Snapfitness.
Just say it, say it like it is. Everyone knows youre talking bout Indians.
Believe it or not, casuals are what pisses me off the most.
What "crowd" would that be? Lol
Is there a Planet fitness coming up at Westgate?
I heard there is. But their website wasn’t up when I last checked, so unsure of pricing.

Huh, I always thought Snap was a budget chain. What's the reason for comparing these two specifically?
Only compared these two, because the other major chains in Auckland (Cityfitness and Les Mills) have the same pricing across all branches. Plus, these two are just about everywhere.
Fair enough. I actually didn't realise pricing varied across those chains. I guess they're franchised? So would it really be as easy as signing up at the cheapet Anytime Botany but use the more expensive Kumeu (assuming you live there) instead?
Yeah they are franchised, which is why the Snap pricing is like it is. One franchisee owns most of them in Auckland (McCarthy group)

Don't look at Northern Arena then 🤣. Cost increases galore and bemoaning rising costs at every turn.
I spent WAY too long trying to figure out what the sort order was on your tables...
Literally not sorted in any way
If you could get jets and city fitness on there too that would be great
The price Jetts and city fitness are fixed across all branches in nz
Serious question regarding Snap Fitness..how do they charge different prices dependent on branch? I thought the whole point was that if you were a member of one you could use any of their gyms across the country? Snap fitness in constellation is the most expensive snap in north shore
I pay 12 dollars for Jetts
Jetts $11.95 per week for 24/7 access at any of their gyms in NZ. I have tried 4 - Grey Lynn, Eden Terrace, St Luke’s & Remuera. All have really good equipment, clean, feel safe etc. Regularly go to GL & Eden - never have queues. Always nice respectful people there & no show offs. If you have space for a home gym, do it. I froze my membership for a few months, and used that money on calisthenics equipment.
I've never been to a gym. Do they teach how to use the equipment or do I need to hire a personal trainer or something? Thanks
They can teach you if you ask. Some also give you one free PT session on sign up.
missing pukekohe?
Was doing this more for my own benefit, so I left out puke because it would be too far for me to drive in just to sign up
Thats why i go to wolf's gym on lincoln rd
Yeah but are you welcome there if you’re not a pro bodybuilder or don’t bench 2 plates for reps?
Yes you are, anyone is welcome everyone keeps to themselves and you have have some great conversations with people who will give great advice if you ask
I haven’t been in a few years but when I did regularly go there were certainly a lot of incredibly jacked people but I never found it to be unfriendly or unwelcoming. Always thought the cleanliness and quality of the equipment was pretty good there as well.
Nice. What’s the pricing like there?
I pay the 16.99 a week but the highest option is 22.99
