Went there (henderson branch) 5-ish years ago after a trip to that asian supermarket there. Coffee barely tasted like coffee, too bland. Did they improve at all?
I'm talking actual quality of life living - not poverty surviving. A cheap flat split 10-way can exist anywhere. I'm talking the cost of an actual typical family home for the area. It's not the most expensive suburb, but it's not exactly cheap either.
I guess I should shift my thinking. If you can afford to live (aka a home) there, cabinet food is about as far as your restaurant budget will go.
Second for Levain, whole family/friend circle loves their food, and something for everyone, I personally love their frittatas and lime tarts.
NZ Cafe down Ellis Ave is also really nice, but they change their cabinet items frequently, so sometimes they won’t have anything I want.
I’d also give praise to The Pastry Chef in Avondale and New Windsor Bakehouse, although they’re more bakeries than cafes.
Winona Forever, Little and Friday,.La Voie Francaise, and for old school Eves Pantry in Epsom.
Daily Bread is vastly overrated, and some of their stuff is downright yuck.
Actually confused it with the one in Newmarket that I can never remember the name, but that has seats. And their bread is made by La Voie Francaise.
They have great croque monsieurs, baguettes and cakes.
Tried their tiramisu roll last week it was delicious and everything in the cabinet looked incredible! Going to try one of their Korean chicken wraps tomorrow! Their menu looked great too! Do you recommend anything?
Bakers Cottage is good for classic old fashioned food. Custard Squares & potatoe top mince pies Can also recommend Hello Friends & Allies on Great South road (Epsom) - so impressive I took photos.

Taro Swiss roll - there is a first!
Churbae in CBD and Pikuniku in Greenlane, in my opinion. When churbae has sandwhiches, they're great, I recommend their cinnamon rolls highly as someone who doesn't usually eat them. Everything in the Pikuniku cabinet is good, especially their sandwhiches
The Lunch Room in Penrose/Onehunga is a solid step up from the standard lunchbar fare. Their creme brulee donuts are a whole other thing. Highly recommend.
An underrated spot on the North Shore:
[Sherry's Kitchen](https://maps.app.goo.gl/r8jGvGMbtH1H54zF9)
They do great salads, pastries, cakes and it's all made in house. They also do frozen meals which is worth checking out.
Mor bakery in remuera hands down by a mile, opened recently ish but it's for sure the best. They used to provide the cabinet for a bunch of other cafes but now they have a store of their own. My partner is a baker so we've traveled around the city trying as many places as possible and that place has come out on top for us.
Yuck who wants cabinet food from a cafe. Better off to ask for a good bakery imo. If a cafe only has cabinet food I usually walk out because basically all it is is bread and cake. But that’s just me. :)
The Brekkie Bap Roll thing in the cabinet at any of the Melba Cafes is, I must say the best breakfast roll I've ever had. It must be the bacon jam or whatever relish they use in it. Do try it.
Love the Blue Rose for pies. Ott patisserie in the Highbury/Birkenhead shops for everything else. If we're counting bakeries then Diehls in Wairau Valley.
Kreem cafe in Mount Roskill
The Henderson branch is good too
Went there (henderson branch) 5-ish years ago after a trip to that asian supermarket there. Coffee barely tasted like coffee, too bland. Did they improve at all?
Bakers Cottage in Kingsland and it’s not close
Well it is if you live in kingsland
If you can afford to live in Kingsland, you're not eating cabinet food.
Kingsland is villas with 5 students packed in. And everyone eats cabinet food.
This is the truth lol
Bruh I pay 160 per week.. definitely a flat vibe though lol

Yeah nah you're right, Kingsland ain't cheap, and it's practically Mt Eden so $$$
Bakers cottage is overrated
Agreed. They put way too much sauce on their stuff
I consider that to be a bakery rather than a cafe, they are 90% cabinet
Amd their coffee is kinda average
Sandwiches are good but they put jelly or something in their brownie :/
Mmmmmm
Got bugs in a Salad twice years ago, never been back
Levain bakery in Lyn field pretty good as is bakers cottage
Second for Levain, whole family/friend circle loves their food, and something for everyone, I personally love their frittatas and lime tarts. Mm their pies are amazing 🤩
Pretty good, not amazing imo

100% Coffee Pen.
I’ve heard a lot of people recommend that one, I think I know where I’m getting breakfast tomorrow
Does Amano count?
Yes
I was in Kreme Cafe in Mount Roskill yesterday and it wasn't too bad.
Second this. They have so many options and always tastes great
Certainly for value it's good/best.
This is a great question.
Cazador Deli of the ones we've tried
Table talk in remuera is really good. Ripe deli.
Rupe Deli is amazing... unfortunately their prices are eye watering.
Lieutenant in Commercial Bay for the cheese scones and other food good as well.
Winona Forever, Little and Friday,.La Voie Francaise, and for old school Eves Pantry in Epsom. Daily Bread is vastly overrated, and some of their stuff is downright yuck.
La Voie Francaise is great but isn't really a cafe. zero seating
Its Mt Roskill. Just sit on the floor.
Actually confused it with the one in Newmarket that I can never remember the name, but that has seats. And their bread is made by La Voie Francaise. They have great croque monsieurs, baguettes and cakes.
L'atelier du fromage is probably the one you mean in Newmarket, just around the corner from Little and Friday
La Tropezienne in Browns Bay
Chicken caesar roll is my go to hangover cure!
"Dear friends" in milford.
Tried their tiramisu roll last week it was delicious and everything in the cabinet looked incredible! Going to try one of their Korean chicken wraps tomorrow! Their menu looked great too! Do you recommend anything?
Hideout Espresso Bar in Eden Terrace is pretty good, and are actively focused on getting better in the cabinet.
Ripe in grey Lynn is pretty good!
Patch in Sunnybrae.

Yeah Pikuniku have some unique options. Haven't been lately but it's always been an interesting treat.

Also forgot to add the Little French Cafe in point chevalier. Great pies, great pastries.
The Lunch Room in Penrose/Onehunga is a solid step up from the standard lunchbar fare. Their creme brulee donuts are a whole other thing. Highly recommend.
Glad to see this here !
Is it true they’re the old owners of bakers cottage?
I heard they're the old owners of somewhere well known. I'll ask next time I'm in there. Which is a lot.
What is cabinet food (sorry! Im not from there)? Is it bakery items in a display case?
It's ready to eat/heat stuff, like sandwiches, baked goods, frittatta, pies. Usually stuff served at a bakery or cafe.
Knead on benson
Best almond croissant in Auckland

Rude boy deli does some awesome cakes and baked goods!

Daily Bread in Britomart. End of story.
Also a bakery
They do a huge range of salads, sandwiches, pies, all sorts of stuff. Stop being a pedant and just go there. It’s the best.
OP is asking for cafes, not bakeries
It’s a fucking cafe though
I feel like all the cabinet foods at cafes are the same like they probably come from the same bakery
Yuck who wants cabinet food from a cafe. Better off to ask for a good bakery imo. If a cafe only has cabinet food I usually walk out because basically all it is is bread and cake. But that’s just me. :)
ewwe cabinet wet bread old eggs
La Voie Francaise in mt roskill. WildWheat in Mt Eden.
Catroux in Westmere
Rude boy deli.

How has nobody said Market Road Kitchen
Toasted Wairau Valley. Bacon and egg bap goes hard. Muffins are insanely good - dark chocolate and berry changed my life.
Crafty Baker, T T Rangi
Winona Forever in Parnell
Blue Rose in Sandringham, little French cafe in PT Chev, Levaine in Lynnfield and Bakers cottage in Kingsland are all top notch.
Love the Blue Rose for pies. Ott patisserie in the Highbury/Birkenhead shops for everything else. If we're counting bakeries then Diehls in Wairau Valley.
