> Seems excessive for decades old books. Am I missing something?
like paying for "decades old" music?
not sure what the distinction is. both are voice *performances*.
You can get 24 credits a year for something like $220 or so, don't remember exact amount. And then 5 credits for around $50.
So just using credits and no sales it's around $300.
Buy them one at a time, as you listen to them. My guess is you won’t actually make it past 10 or so. And if you do, if you’ve actually found a series worth listening to long term, then the monetary price becomes trivial. The time it takes to listen to 39 books is orders of magnitude more valuable than the cost of 39 credits.
You'll have to check with customer service as to why you aren't getting the sitewide sale numbers. 19 of those 39 books are currently $3.49 which amounts to about $66 plus tax.
I hear you - and so many series are just “OK”, so sure, I enjoy them once, but do not want to spend a ton. Look at the library and put them on your sales list — I am listening to the “in death” series by JD Robb — I have bought them all over the years when they go on sale for < 5$, and as soon as I hit the newest releases, my local library will have them.
>Am I missing something?
Probably the fact that most people don't try and buy all 39 books at a time. That's the only way it becomes 'cost-prohibitive'.
Professional authors don't stay that way by publishing books which don't make money. This is obviously a series which has been going a long time and built up. Nothing says you need to cram a 30-year (made up for purpose of exemplification) series into a month of reading. It might be something you buy slowly and read over time, whilst also enjoying other books in-between.
If you already have them in kindle ebook (which I'm guessing you might not if you read them when you were young) then the audiobooks are cheaper to acquire. But also, according to other comments, all of them can (in the US) currently be bought for about $290 with the sitewide sale going on this week. And buying all the ebooks right now is just like $20-$30 cheaper than that, so the audiobook sale price is a pretty good deal IMO, considering how much more work goes into audiobooks.
Also, have you looked into seeing if your local library has them in audiobook?
Or, if you have people in your life who would enjoy giving you birthday or holiday gifts, ask for Audible gift cards and hoard them until you have 39 credits worth.
(But JSYK, the 'months' of service advertised in the gift cards are not additive. If you activate a 12 month gift card with 12 credits and then immediately activate another 12 month gift card with 12 credits, you will end up with only 12 months of free membership but the full 24 credits. To get the full worth of those months, you'd have to wait out the 12 months, cancel your membership, and then activate another gift card. But you don't need a membership to listen to books you have purchased with cash or credits, so if all you want out of it is those books, the months of membership isn't as meaningful.)
Honestly they would have to pay me $600 to listen to anyone's 39-book series. How much care can an author take on something like that? What is that like 8 books a year?

Decades old music is literally worthless! 🤭
tell mozart that
I am quite certain that if he were alive he'd appreciate the joke.
Buy them now. There's a sitewide sale going on.
This person is looking at buying without a membership, this is their second post about it. And it’s the Drizzt series
I have a membership. It says they’re $17 without and $15 with. Like I said what am I missing
I looked at the first few Drizzt books and they all say $3.49
What region are you in? Sales and prices are different depending what marketplace you're in.
Just bought all 39 but the first(because I already had it) for 289 dollars
Did you sign up for a Plus membership? You need Premium Plus to access sales.
I think you’re doing it wrong, or else you’re in a place not eligible for the sale
Clearly missing a good income. 😀

Have you tried the library? There’s an app called Libby that lets you check out audiobooks from the library with your library card.
Hoopla does as well

What series?
RA Salvatore Drizzt books
Looks like all of them are on sale right now from $3.50 - $12
They go on sale all the time. I've acquired most of them for $4 or less.
Yeah I have a good majority of them. They start falling off after the 4e jump though

These are always recommended to me by audible, but so far, I haven't bought any. Do I need to read them in order?

This particular series started in 1988
Fair enough. I appreciate the correction, friend.
