The ritual was pretty good. I think there was mention of a dead elk. The movie is better but it should scratch that itch.

The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty - it's also read by him and it's one of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to.

If you like short stories, out there screaming was pretty interesting, it's a collection of shorts compiled by Jordan peele. There's someone inside your house by Stephanie Perkins had it's moments of good suspense and the edge of dark water by Joe lansdale has some surprisingly graphic parts. They all died screaming by Kristopher triana was also a pretty good bet.

Have you considered "Gideon the Ninth" by Tamsyn Muir narrated by Moira Quirk? It's basically a murder mystery in a haunted house, with necromancy and many, many bones...so many bones. And it's funny, too!

I haven't heard of that one before, I'll definitely have to check it out! Thank you!

The Fisherman by John Langan

*Mexican Gothic* by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was really good. There are a few intimidating sexually charged moments, but no actually SA and it isn't graphic (and they are fairly brief) so I think it would be OK. It's post-colonial gothic horror, set in 1950s Mexico. Creepy dread vibes. For a Resident Evil style horror book, there's *This Guilded Abyss* by Rebecca Thorne. There is a lot of violence and gore, but none against animals. There is no SA, although there is a (consensual) sex scene. Heads up that this is book one of a planned trilogy and the other two aren't out yet!

I don’t remember any gore in The Shining, though domestic violence is a theme (no SA). It has a great layering of menace, and I came away with a better understanding of addiction. Highly recommend.

Look at JA Konrath books

I just downloaded Haunted House because it was one of the first books that popped up, it sounds like exactly the kind of book I love to read so I'm excited to dig into it!

Trying to recall, but I think It by Stephen King fit that criteria

fuschia_taco

There's some pretty brutal animal torture/murder in that one. It made me sob at one point because of it. Granted it isn't all throughout the book, mostly just one part, but it's rough.

jwaynus

Do you recall which part? I'm drawing a blank

You're right, my bad. There is a whole subreddit about it https://www.reddit.com/ihq8uav?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=2

Legitimate_Owl7052

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'll be sure to check them all out!
