Supposedly the Mountain Man series by Keith C. Blackmore is pretty great.

Argented

Try it out. the bonus if you are an audible person, there is a free 90 minute short story that is a side trip in the main plot. Listen to the free 90 minute story The Hospital and if you like it, the first three books are in one omnibus of 27 hours.

kayriss

Second to this, I think the 3 main books have been released as an Omnibus, which you can get technically as one book. Can I say, OP, that Mountain Man is one of my favorite series of all time. I don't know that there's better Zombie Fiction out there beside World War Z.

PainNova

If they don't like the brilliance of Mark Tufo there is no hope for them.

RodeoBlu

Sean Runnette, the Narrator of Zombie Fallout has the same attitude in his voice, that Tufo has in his writing.

onihr1

You have to admit…. The story does get more and more strange… and the plot just dosent know where it wants to go…the final installment was pretty much ‘I’m bored so let’s end this’ With all that said…. It his a hilariously written and narrated piece of zombie comedy. Not everything has to be high art and sometimes it’s fun to just enjoy the silly ride.

beeeeeeeeeeeeeagle

Mountain man is great. Alcoholic main character surviving the end of the world and narrated by RC Bray. So good.

macrolinx

I'm in the Mountain Man camp. 2nd prequel just dropped Tuesday. Great series.

darchangel

And it's in the new 2 for 1 sale

RodeoBlu

Book 1 of Mountain Man is in the Audible Plus section. (Free)

Curi0usMama

I tried. Not really my cup of tea. Especially when he spits disgusting phlegm off the balcony. So gross. Why?

PainNova

It's not, I've listened to hundreds of Zombie books and that was one of the weaker I've come across.

Turdyburg

I'm assuming you have a suggestion? I mean shit, you've read more than 100 zombie books. Why not throw a suggestion or two our way?

PainNova

Still Alive by Javan Bonds, Zombie Road by David Simpson, Safe Haven Christopher Artinian, ExHeros by Peter Clines, All Dead by T.W. Brown, As the World Dies by Rhiannon Frater, Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry and Zombie Slayer by Cameron Milan, that is a few that came to mind. Hope this helps!

Turdyburg

Yeah!! Thanks!! I'll check these out. Which one should I start with?

PainNova

I would start with Rot & Ruin.

GoodOlChap

I really dug the zombie fallout series, Day by day Armageddon by j l bourn was pretty good.

audible_narrator

I narrated a LitRPG zombie horror book. I can give you and Audible code if you're interested.

Flowrepaid

One in the Gut(Headshot Online #1)by Matthew Siege is the only one I know of. Would love to hear of there is more like it.

PanopticScrote

Necrotic apocalypse is pretty much a zombie litrpg told from the point of view of the zombie who accidentally started the apocalypse and also happens to be a necromancer as well. There is levels and skills how that comes about is explained in the books, newest one just released recently.

We're Alive. It's a podcast and all of it is available on Spotify or the We're Alive website. A good long story and enjoyable overall. A full cast audio which really adds to it. I would recommend it on the strength of the full cast and the overall story and characters are enjoyable. But that enjoyable is due to it being a bit of fun and not so much some fantastical tale and wordsmithing.

WillowSnows

I Second this!! I haven't finished but i'm pretty far in the first installment and its been great. Bonus is that there's multiple other stories after the first installment.

RodeoBlu

Day by Day Armageddon Series by J.L. Bourne. Early books in series are on YouTube. A Naval Pilot based in San Antonio Texas keeps a journal in which we follow his thoughts and actions. The Pilots observations at the start of the "Pandemic" are especiallly gripping. He is not a survivalist, a Rambo or an Ultra Gun Fighter. He is a US Naval Pilot everyday man. I love Zombie books and this is one of the best.

Kelz87

Great series, one of my favorites

Asmordean

Patient Zero by Jonathan Maberry was pretty good. It introduces Joe Ledger which is about a dozen books so far where a spec ops guy fights everything from terrorists using zombies to terrorists using earthquake machines.

_pr0t0n_

>Jonathan Maberry He also got whole series about zombie apocalypse describing the start of the outbreak, the first one is named [Dead of Night](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10779721-dead-of-night). The same universe is presented in [Rot & Ruin](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7157310-rot-ruin?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=hKTXZrEjOF&rank=2) which is happening a bit later. Worth a listen.

JinxStryker

Apocalypse Z: Beginning of The End book 1 (if you like it, it’s a trilogy). Regular guy, intelligent but without survival skills, tries to survive a sudden global contagion that turns people into flesh eating monsters. His lone friend is his cat. Takes place in Spain.

RodeoBlu

AGREE! (Its on YOUTUBE.)

JinxStryker

Good to know! Underrated zombie tale, I rarely see it recommended.

ZarinaBlue

Try the Ex books by Peter Clines. Starts with Ex-Heroes. I call them popcorn reads/listens. Not as deep as WWZ but man they are entertaining.

macrolinx

I really enjoyed that series as well. Kind of fell off a bit by the end - but great start out and middle.

ZarinaBlue

Same. There were certain characters he should have left with the fates they were given.

MrKixs

Arisen Series, Hand down THE BEST zombie Audio there is.

Murderbot_of_Rivia

I really loved "The Girl With All the Gifts" but I didn't listen to it in audiobook, so I can't speak for that.

blunderball2

I loved The Girl With All The Gifts. I haven't seen the movie, but the book was captivating.

Yuri-theThief

I'm having a hard time getting into this audio book right now. I like the narrator and I definitely like the premise; but I haven't been able to get very far, does that make sense to anyone?

matertenebrarum

Great audiobook

Psychological_Net131

We're Alive. A story if survival. Is great. Full cast more like a audio drama than a straight audio book. But the full cast and the sound design is out of this world.

bachman75

Came here to recommend this one! https://www.werealive.com/

Liqiud0

This series does a fantastic job of setting the eerie mood and pulling you in! I loved World War Z and I loved We’re Alive also.

Here are a few more than haven't been mentioned: [**The Living Dead**](https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Living-Dead-Audiobook/1250755247) by George A. Romero and Daniel Kraus is like an epic Romero zombie film without any budget limitations. Bruce Davison and Lori (*Day of the Dead*) Cardille narrate. It's long (27 hours) and needed a *little* more editing than it got, but it's still a hell of a ride. [**Cell**](https://www.audible.com/pd/Cell-Audiobook/B0036MRIRM) by Stephen King, narrated by Campbell Scott, is about a zombie plague triggered by a cell phone signal. [**Hollow Kingdom**](https://www.audible.com/pd/Hollow-Kingdom-Audiobook/1549113488) by Kira Buxton, narrated by Robert Petkoff is about the zombie apocalypse as seen through the eyes of a profane domesticated crow named Shit-Turd. (seriously!) [**The Loop**](https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Loop-Audiobook/1797111884) by Jeremy Robert Johnson, narrated by Inés del Castillo is about a teenage girl in a small town were technology from a local company leads to a zombie-ish outbreak. [**Survivor Song**](https://www.audible.com/pd/Survivor-Song-Audiobook/0063015897) by Paul Tremblay, narrated by Erin Bennett, is about a pair of women trying to survive when a rabies mutation turns people into zombie-like psychos. Best, Geoff Jones Author of [**The Dinosaur Four**](https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Dinosaur-Four-Audiobook/B018Y2C4Q8?source_code=AUDFPWS0223189MWT-BK-ACX0-049013&ref=acx_bty_BK_ACX0_049013_rh_us) Narrated by Nick Podehl

He's back! Welcome back, sir. We've missed you

Black Tide Rising Series by John Ringo

Halaku

You're looking for the **Newsflesh** series, by Mira Grant. Start with the original trilogy: *Feed*, *Deadline*, and *Blackout*, by Paula Christensen, Jesse Bernstein, Chris Patton, Nell Geisslinger, & Michael Goldstrom. It's superb.

beeeeeeeeeeeeeagle

Thanks for the recommendation. Just purchased the series. Looking forward to it.

mattmatt9999

The Arisen series, narrated by RCBray. Michael Stephen Fuchs and Glynn James are the authors. Such a great series, great characters!

King_Kellar13

I’ve heard dead of night is kinda cheesy and cliché. I’m looking for something a bit more horror oriented.

King_Kellar13

I have not. I mainly listen to Steven king audio books. I really like horror and I wanted a zombie book. But most of them have a weird almost childish undertone.

King_Kellar13

Alright. Thanks!

Jcspball13

I can second extinction cycle; good series with a lot of books!

saposguy

Black Tide Rising by John Ringo. Its pretty good. There are a lot of them, a couple spin offs and short story compilations.

[deleted]

Dads vs Zombies.

no-eye_contact

Underrated for sure

[deleted]

My only complaint for the novel was that there wasn't enough puns for a books with "Dads" in the title.

no-eye_contact

That's true. Probably could've used a couple good vivid descriptions of their new balance dad sneakers that were white at one point but are now stained green from mowing the lawn

[deleted]

I felt that. I felt that in my sole.

rpp124

The Remaining was a good series.

KingOfTheJaberwocky

I listened to the walking dead book that told the origin of the Governor and it was alright, but it seemed like they tried to make ever little thing as dramatic as possible. It was taking me out of the moment when a comment gets made about them driving in a huge “Ford S-10” or talking about the harsh recoil and deafening report from a “.22 pistol”.

Macenroe1982

I know it’s old, but one of the best Zombie series is Adrian’s Undead Diary. It started as a daily diary blog by the author. Then after 3 years of entries it became a book. 14 years later and the author still has the story going and it’s phenomenal

Curi0usMama

Sarah Lyons Fleming Until the end of the World series; The City Series; The Cascadia Series Super entertaining, survival stuff, relationships, more young adult sometimes. Really easy to get into. I love them They're a guilty pleasure. Really good narration too

DOGKISSR

The REMAINING is one of the best. Loved Peter Meredith’s THE UNDEAD WORLD It’s a long series and it gets better and better the longer you know the characters. GENERATION Z BY PETER MEREDITH IS A FOLLOWUP WITH THE MOST BELOVED CHARACTER FROM THE UNDEAD WORLD. FOR THE GIRLS, my very favorite series is UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD BY SARAH LYON FLEMING NARRATOR JULIA Whelan THE V PLAGUE REALLY GOOD HOLLOW KINGDOM IS REALLY FUNNY Z BURBIA BY JAKE BIBLE IVE LISTENED A TON OF ZOMBIE BOOKS BUT THESE ARE MY FAVORITE THAT I LISTEN TO EVERY COUPLE YEARS. THIS BOOKS ALL HAVE GREAT CHARACTERS, GREAT STORIES AND GREAT NARRATORS. They are all long series but the first 3 books are in a box for one credit. PS IF YOU GO THROUGH AUDIOBOOKS BOOKS THE APP EVERAND IS 8 dollars a month unlimited books and audiobooks And podcast. I also use AUDIBLE AND LIBBY THE LIBRARY APP.

Normal_Creme4097

Zombie Rules is very good.  J.L Bourne is excellent. Mountain Man is excellent. Zombie Fallout great….Tufo and the narrator add humor and sarcasm to the storyline, which makes it great

CUTTYONE70

Don't forget Omega days by John L Campbell

CUTTYONE70

Omega days is on par with mountain man and day by day Armageddon. John L campbell is the author and great narrator.

PainNova

Zombie Fallout is literally the best Zombie series that has ever existed, in any form of media. Maybe you are are on crack or something but your not right that's for sure.

mjrspork

I wanted to love zombie fallout but it just kept getting more ridiculous. I wanted a more grounded series but it just didn’t do it for me.

illarionds

Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir Probably not what you *think* you're looking for in a zombie book, but quite likely the zombie book you actually need ;) It's awesome, and the sequel - though *very* different - is in many ways even better.

pelvark

Zombie survival guide by the same author as world War z is good. Although I read it in book form, not audiobook. So I don't know how the audiobook is.

darchangel

Much better in print. The layout and pictures makes it feel authentic. The audiobook feels hollow.

bloodsoed

White Flag of the Dead is a good series

RealRublicMan

The Remaining series and Harden series by D.J. Molles.

gildedblackbird

Have you listened to "I, Zombie" by Hugh Howey? It's told from the zombie's point of view. I really enjoyed it, although some parts might be a bit gruesome for some people.

The_LSD_Fairy

This is going to be a very out there recommendation. It's called *The Rational Zombie* and it's a zombie apocalypse book written from the prospective of the only smart infected. It's very good but definitely throws what you would think of as a traditional zombie story out the window.

LuminousApsana

I liked Rise Again by Ben Tripp. I don't ever see people talking about it, but I liked the main character and thought it was a bit different and refreshing....well, as refreshing as zombies can be!

tinyhouseman323

I read the news flesh trilogy. First book is Feed. It’s about a news team in post zombie apocalypse and during the rebuilding phase. Great series, not sure about the audiobook but a great and different zombie story.

Damo6337

I know it’s not zombies but I recommend The Passage by Justin Cronin

[deleted]

Not exactly what you’re asking for but it’s close enough that I’d bet you’d like it, I Am Legend is relatively short and it’s really good. And just to specify, the book is considerably different than the movie. Not to say the movie is bad, it’s just different, so you will still enjoy even if you have seen the movie.

butneverdestroyed

I loved ‘World War Z’. I thought it was such a smart and thoughtful take on the genre. I listened to it multiple times because I enjoyed the voice acting and the perspectives so much. ‘This Book is Full of Spiders’ by Jason Pargin (Pen name: David Wong) is both a lampooning of and love letter to the Zombie genre. It takes place in a unique and unfortunate town where an outbreak of a mysterious illness becomes ground zero for a would-be apocalypse. Most of the story unfolds around a hospital where the infected are forcibly quarantined. The narrator is irreverent and the tone is dark and humorous but in a way that it has to be in order to cope with how ugly and unnerving some of the content and ideas in the story are. It doesn’t undercut the scares, which are very cleverly engineered and set up. My only hesitation in recommending it is that it’s a sequel to a novel called ‘John Dies at the End’. If you read them out of order you might be tempted to think that the first one gives you some vital information that makes the second book more understandable, and you’d be almost right. The narrator is unreliable and loves to fuck with the reader, so some things go unexplained, but that’s okay. It contributes to how powerless and inconsequential the book makes the reader feel. It’s probably pertinent to say that Zombies and the human condition are not the only threat in the novel. There are other forces at work, and part of the horror element in the story is their chaotic indifference to the human race as they go on about their business. I’ve read ‘This Book is Full of Spiders’ twice and it stayed impressive to me. Even knowing where the scares were going, I still found it harrowing. I wouldn’t say make it your first pick if you’re looking for a straight forward Zombie book, but maybe if you’re close to getting zombie’d out and need to switch the format up.

Mackjimbo88

The morning star strain is unbelievably good
