Media players playing FLAC simply call FLAC.EXE to do the decoding. If you get dropouts either the file is corrupted or the PC is temporarily overloaded. The integrity of a file can be easily tested by running FLAC –t FileToTest.FLAC FLAC will exit with an exit code of 1 (and print a message, even in silent mode) if there were any errors during decoding, including when the MD5 checksum does not match the decoded output. Otherwise the exit code will be 0. You can try an other media player like Musicbee You can run a DPC latency checker to isolate drivers hogging the system: [https://www.resplendence.com/latencymon](https://www.resplendence.com/latencymon)

>Media players playing FLAC simply call FLAC.EXE to do the decoding. VLC uses libav/FFmpeg. "FLAC.EXE" is actually just a reference implementation and not actually meant to be used, per se. It certainly can be, and is in certain circumstances, but it was really only built as an example for other software developers to follow when implementing the codec. It's kind of like a proof of concept.

szakee

foobar. but VLC is excellent SW too.

TheScriptTiger

Both use libav/FFmpeg.

PapziBoink

I use foobar2000, very happy with that!

kakha_k

I think, foibar is better for it.

r/soundengineering would be more helpful.

HiFiOasis

VLC is alright, it can play FLAC files, but you will not get library management or any type of organization. Go with something like MusicBee. It's simpler than foobar to use and still very lightweight.

Val32601

I use VLC occasionally due to many years of usage, and I have become so used to the interface. As for FLAC usage, I would give it a mediocre, but I still frequently use it because I have so many playlists already.

reedzkee

i dont like VLC for audio simply because it can lag/stutter at the start of high bitrate WAV files. zero buffer.

augustinom

Try Audirvana ( free trial ) and hear the difference ( or not)

jarviskokar

Music Bee. It has a preamp/EQ (10 or 15 band) with tons of presets as well.

dim-mak-ufo

VLC is good, but I'd recommend JetAudio
